Sudden unexplained increase in my broadband useage

For a year my monthly useage has been around 7gb ( my allownce is 10gb ) I have never gone over this amount.
Suddenly last month it jumped to almost 30gb and I  was charged an excess of £20 ( I am a very poor pensioner and cant afford this!!)
This month it was 8gb in the first 3 days. I was away on holiday and the only useage was my via my daughter who came in in to check my emails.
Any tips as to what may be going on ( there is no one else in the house using the system!!) ??
I propose to check and record my useage daily via my account to see if I can determine where this increase has come from. Are there any other ways that I can monitor useage?
Many thanks for any tips.

I use an iMac computer so this may not apply to you but at the beginning of this month I found my usage had jumped up, that was on the first of the month. The next day I found on the BT broadband meter a warning that if I kept on with this usage I would go over my monthly limit, 40G. Good on BT!! I set about trying to find what was going on and eventually discovered a host, I think, web site called s1.yimg.com which Yahoo uses when I go onto the flickr home page and this seems to cause the problem. I have a little program called SurplusMeter which keeps an eye on daily usage and this goes mad when I access flickr. I suspect the problem may lie in the new upgraded Mac OS but for now I'll stay away from flickr and monitor the uage. There will be little programs that monitor your usage if you run Windows and someone else may be able to help there. The problem with the BT Usage Monitor is it's a day late. You need something you can watch. The point I'm making is if I had gone over my usage BT would have been correct to charge me so try and keep an eye on it now.

Hi, does anyone know why the Broadband Useage Monitor functionality is not available on my In-Laws BT.com account?
Where I would see a section for MANAGE YOUR BROADBAND SERVICES, on their account there is no such option.
I am on Infinity Option 3, they are on Total Broadband Option 1 but I though this was available for all accounts.

    Hi.
The monitor is available for all account types, and is actually particularly useful for those on the limited allowance packages.
If your inlaws are unable to see the usage monitor via the typical method, you may like to point them at my shortcuts - options 14d-14g, hopefully one will work for them.

  • Sudden vast increase in broadband speed

Hi, the last couple of days or so I've noticed my internet dropping off and when it happened again tonight, I ran a speed test, both on wholesale tester and speedtest.net, and instead of the usual 5meg that i normally get, im now getting 14megs.
my exchange (ESJED)is currently being converted to 21cn wbc (according to samknows) with an end date of this month.
is this whats caused my sudden increase in speed?

This is what I'm trying to find out though. Ive not been notified that I'm getting moved to anything new since I was moved to adslmax in august. Its only been because my broadband has been dropping maybe 4-5 times in the last week that I was concerned that I might have a slow speed. Sometimes Ive had to reboot the router completely, sometimes its came back on of its own accord.
In any case, I do in fact leave the router on 24/7 anyway. The only time it gets reset is when the connection drops completely and wont return, or if, for some strange reason, my house lights flicker.. then it kills my connection then too.

  • SUDDEN SURGE IN BROADBAND USEAGE ACCORDING TO BT

My average usage is approx 9GB per month but all of a sudden BT reckonS I have used 20GB and 1GB in the last 2 days. The problem is I am doing nothing different this month, have not downloaded anything etc. Does anybody know what may cause this? Also, how can I find out what I have downloaded which = 20GB or indeed how I can challenge what BT reckons I have used.

  • Sudden CPU Increase leading to loud fan noise

I'm noticing that sporadically firefox or mail (or some other program but these are the common ones) will have a sudden increase in CPU usage. It's jumped into the teens and above. Sometimes 50+.
This of course leads to the fan to kick in and start going and it is of course LOUD. So I kill that process and everything is back to normal.
Any ideas why this is happening though? Did something happen can I prevent this?

    Hello,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
I world not worry about this, MacBooks do this, it is just the CPU working harder and that creates more heat. Most of the time it is YouTube or something processor intensive.
    Hope this helps!

  • Check Broadband useage on unlimited

Hi, as above, I have the unlimited broadband deal. I want to check my BB useage but the message I get is that I dont need to check as I am unlimited. I plan to bin BT broadband and fixed line and go to one of the rural braodband providers. The cap is 150Gb. So I want to see how much I am currently using with BT. Could someone let me know how to do that please?
    Thanks

there used to be a link that still allowed you to see the usage but I don't think that works anymore. so there is no other way apart from trying live chat
This is still working for me:
    1. Sign in to MyBT and click "View your latest bill". When the bill appears, highlight the 7-digit number in the URL, right-click it and Copy.
    2. Sign in here. When the maintenance page appears, highlight XXXXXXX in the URL, right-click and Paste.
    3. Click the Go arrow in your browser or hit Enter on your keyboard.

  • Have you tried to see your broadband useage monito...

I wonder how many of you good folks out there have tried to have a peek at how many Gbs youve
used, by accessing the Useage Monitor via 'My Services' on MyBt.  If you have like me - youll sadly discover
it just aint there.   If -like me you got on the dog and bone and spoke to someone in the technical dept.
then without doubt-as always - youll find a most helpful and apologetic advisor.
However, not only-as in my case- did i feel sorry for my advisor because he tried in vain (not
knowing that Bt had removed this option) - but I felt sorry for all those customers like myself who had to
go through all the hassle of 'ringing in' -waiting while the apologetic advisor did a remote check of my computer
only to find- as I already had- that this option no longer existed.   My question is this- and maybe someone out
there in the ether can answer this.   Why, when having provided such a fantastic Broadband access, do Bt find
it beyond themselves to amend the website when they remove something as important as the usage monitor.
What I want from ANY website is to do what it says ' on the tin' -  Sadly My Bt doesn't at the
moment.    Come on guys and gals - get your act together.  This sort of thing detracts from an otherwise
    splendid service.    Cheers   Roy Henry

    Hi.
The usage meter is certainly working for me, and I expect most other people.
There does seem to be a problem for some at present, as there are quite a few posts on this topic. However my set of links (my shortcuts options 14d-14f) one of which tends to work.
It's not clear at present what the actual problem may be. Have you tried more than one browser to access the usage meter ?

  • Sudden unexplainable wi-fi connectivity issue on 2011 Macbook Pro 13"

    Hi All,
I've moved to a new apartment, and am having significant issues with my late-2011 Macbook Pro 13". Even in my old place, it wasn't ideal. My old 2005 iBook 12" would work perfectly well coping with wi-fi. As soon as I bought my new machine, I found I couldn't use a torrent client AND browse at the same time.
Since moving, I can barely connect to my wi-fi. The connection usually shows up on the wi-fi network list, showing full signal strength. On trying to connect it either says "connection time-out" or does connect (usually after deleting the connection, and creating a new location). When it does connect, it is so incredibly slow, and frequently can't even load gmail. I thought it was just an ISP/ router problem. I then couldn't connect to anyone elses wi-fi in the building (including a fairly well used pay-per-Mb network the building has).
After resetting the thing numerous times, I pulled out my infrequently used Windows 7 work laptop, old iBook AND a Blackberry, and all three connect and work beautifully everytime!
    What could be the issue?

  • Sudden x10 increase in iPhone data use

I’ve got an iPhone 4, with O2 in the UK.  I normally use about 300MB per month.  That’s suddenly gone through the roof; this month I’ve used 950MB in 2 ½ weeks, including 450 MB in 3 days.  That’s a rise from about 10MB a day to about 120MB.  My phone has received 10MB of data in the last 2 hours while apparently doing nothing.
There’s no obvious reason for this.  I’ve closed down all my apps,  deleted an app I’d recently downloaded (flightrader24), reset my network settings, turned-off most location services, don’t use facebook, don’t send diagnostics info, have deleted my iCloud account and upgraded to iOS 6.  It’s a bit better, but still at least double what it was before.
    Any suggestions?
    Jedzi

Something sending 4.1GB of data would do this.
I know that sounds sarcastic, but it's true. The phone itself won't decide to randomly send data for no reason at all.
You said you sent photos. Any chance you send a video? That would do it. Any chance something got stuck in your outbox and was resent many times? That might do it.
Basically, you'll have to try and figure out what you did. Most likely it was uploading or emailing a large file, and the most likely large file would have been a video.

  • Best way to increase network or broadband coverage...

Hi, hoping someone can help me out with a networking question.
I have BT infinity coming into a bungalow, the hub is centrally located in the house and we get good wireless signal in all rooms.
I have an external garage with back office adjacent to the house at the end of the property. My computer would physically be approx 25mts away from the infinity hub, but due to a number of walls, no signal can be reached. I do not have phone lines sockets coming into this building either.
What is the best way for me to get wireless (or any broadband signal) into the office. I tried the adaptors that you put into the power supply and they do work, but broadband signal is not very strong.
Is it possible to use another router as a repeater, or to spread my network (I have a spare Netgear DGN2000 router that we had before infinity), or any other ideas?
Many thanks for any advice here. Regards, John.

Hi Dave, thanks for the link, Im a bit clearer now on difference between wireless repeater and access point.
@Alan, yes thick walls, 4 of the buggers.
I am using Netgear XAV101 power socket thingamajiggies. They are working, just do not seem to be getting as fast a speed reading as I do when in the house on the wireless so Im wondering about interferrance on the cables.
Perhaps there are some newer ones available with improved speed.
I have this NETGEAR DGN2000 here which is what we used before the HH3. Do you think if I ran an ethernet cable from the HH3 out to the garage, that it would be possible to set the router up as an Access Point? Just had a measure-up, I would need approx 32mtre ethernet cable, is this just a baby or considered long?

  • Sudden unexplained "artifacts" surrounding cursor and icons on PowerMac G5

Two days ago this weird grid of dots and bars suddenly appeared on my cursor and surrounded all the icons on my desktop. Most fonts such as in Word don't seem to be affected, byt most non-letter graphics are. Games have patches of this grid in some areas. It follows my cursor around; it IS my cursor. This never happened to my older G4, which I still use. I've tried the settings and rebooting, but nothing works. What is this? Help!

One possibility is an overheating graphics card, check that its fan is running and the heat sink is stable and in proper contact with the core chip.

  • Broadband useage

I have this month suddeny been informed of a big increase in my Internet usage but cannot understand why, unless it is because I have a new iPad. I've heard about peer to peer increasing usage - does anyone know how I can find out if this is the cause and how I get rid of it? I cannot recognise any unusual programmes on my pc. Thanks

Peer-to-peer (P2P) isn't any one program, it's a way of sharing files between users on the internet. There are several P2P networks, each using their own software.
You would have known if you installed one of these programs.
There are many things that can increase data usage. Apart from P2P, the big ones are on-line gaming, and streaming video.
Mobile devices can eat up quite a bit of bandwidth, depending on their settings. Some are just very chatty for no particularly good reason.
Another culprit could be a virus stealing your bandwidth for nefarious purposes.  Check that your virus scanner is up-to-date and is actually working properly.

  • Sudden, unexplainable lag and performance problems making gaming impossible

Last week I was happily gaming with all the settings on high.  I went away for the weekend and when I came back, it is absolutely impossible to play because of lag.  When I put all the settings at their very lowest, it is almost possible to play but, of course, the images look terrible.  What happened?!
I have a dv7t-6000 pavilion.  I tried installing the latest drivers for my graphics card, but when I did that the game was simply a black screen and wouldn't pull up at all, so I uninstalled them.  Now it runs, but only just.  I have all updates for Windows 7 64-bit.
I'm still under warranty, do I need to ask for a new video card, or what?

Give me your graphics card specifications and name.  Most likelyl it's the switchable graphics issue, like in many of the other HP laptops out there.  What you can do, if you are still under the 21 day return period, is that you can return you laptop and exchange it for another laptop, or gert a full refund altogether.  I would recommend this since HP is not a great gaming notebook brand.

  • Sudden huge increase in project size

So I've got this problem with projects where when I go in and maybe tweak an automation parameter and save, the project size shoots thru the roof, and for instance after doing this a few times with one of my projects, it has gone from 33 MB to - I kid you not - 297 MB.
Scared to make any more changes to it now, it will be at 1GB in no time.
This is not including audio files or anything - just the project (song) file itself.
    Anyone else encountering this?

Are you maybe recording your Automation in "write" mode? Try latch/touch mode instead where only the automation is written which you are actually using on your tracks. Check your Automation event lists for redundant automation data.

  • Sudden Volume Increase. Only On SOME Songs?

Well, I usually just tick the "Shuffle Songs" and go about my work...but I come across a song once in a while i will come across a song that will blow my ear drums out, even if the volume is way below half, lol.
I figured this has to be something to do with the bitrate, correct?
It only happens on SOME of my songs. Never happened with a vid.
    Anyone ever had this issue???

    I have experienced the same.
However when I tried SoundCheck all my songs became too quiet, even when the volume was turned up high.
A couple of things that I don't understand (OK a load of things, 'coz I'm stupid
How does SoundCheck determine its baseline volume?
Why do some tracks sound so much louder? e.g. I have some tracks that due to the EU limit will not go louder than a set point, however other songs DO go much louder?!
Do I have to further adjust the quiet ones in iTunes by turning up the Volume Adjustment setting?
In my experience that means that the iPod just caps the volume earlier in the dial when I turn the volume up!
