Sudden weak wifi in one room

Within the past month or so my wife and I have both noticed that in our bedroom all of our apple products (iPad, mini, and phones) have become very unreliable for things like YouTube or Netflix loading/buffering, and often standard websites don't work at all. We've both tried resetting everything and also reset the router. All other devices in the house, including a blu ray player in the same room, have no issues. The products also show a full strength wifi connection but don't work, though as soon as we leave the bedroom everything does. Any ideas what might have caused this and what the solution might be?

Check your router for these settings: http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4199
That may help, but in the end, the strength that the Apple products are receiving are just not very strong for some reason in your one room only.  DIfferent product use different band like a,b,g,n so one type of device can have a stong signal while another has a weak one if one band is having an issue in the router or otherwise having an issue penetrating walls.
You can also try resetting the router to factory settings and updating the firmware.  I used to have this same issue with a Linksys router, but then I finally replaced with with an Airport Extreme and the beamforming technology eliminated all issues.  I now have 100% strength in 95% of my home and outside to.

  • Sudden Weak WiFi signal on 3Gs

Over the last month or so I've experienced a big drop-off in my 3Gs's ability to latch-on to my local home WiFi signal. I've not recently upgraded, or changed settings on the phone. An example; my BT Home Hub router sits in my office and casts a strong signal throughout my timber-frame house, (and I know the signal's still fine because my 3-yr-old Macbook, which I use anywhere and everywhere, and spanking new iMac display full WiFi bars and the speed is excellent.) I normally access the web via my iPhone from my living-room, which is no more than 20 Yards from the router, and up until a month or so ago, enjoyed a full reception on the iPhone also, but now nothing. Zilch. (There is one small corner where I can sometimes pick up one bar.)
I'm composing this message on the iMac, which displays the full WiFi signal, with my iPhone propped up next to it and displaying zero WiFi reception. We are about eight yards away from the router.
(I realise this topic is closely linked to others already posted, but it's something that Apple should really be responding to; they obviously have people who keep an eye on forums like these to monitor feedback about their products, and connectivity issues seem to be a bit of a hot potato at the moment.)
My hunch is that the iPhone's capability to receive a WiFi signal has somehow become compromised, being as all other devices - and Apple devices at that - work fine.
    Can somebody help.
    Thx.

Weak WiFi reception seems to be a suddenly common problem.  We just traveled to Holland last week, and all three of our iPhones were useless, and unable to pick up wifi signals.  We got back to the states, and the problem continues.
My iPhone must be within a few feet of a wifi router or will see no signals.  I visited an Apple reseller who told me to update my iPhone software to solve the problem.  Now I have NO signal reception unless my phone is at the router... any router.
Today I went to the Genius Bar, where the Genius reset my phone, and told me I have a hardware problem: my wifi card in my phone is no good, and I have to replace my phone.  I thought this was suspicious at best, turned to the forums, and discovered many, many, many people have the same problem!!!
We can't all suddenly have the same hardware problem, but we all can have the same software problem.  This seems to be a well known bug based upon what I've read here.
I am about to do a total RESTORE on my iPhone to see if it solves the problem.
I agree with another's comment: Come on, Apple, fess up and fix it.

  • Wifi home network no longer showing on ipad in one room of house

All of a sudden, ipad first gen won't recognize wifi home network or any network in one room of house while other devices work fine in same room.  I've tried to update firmware for router, reset the ipad to factory defaults and "forget network" but none have solved problem. How can I fix this? Thanks!

Do a Google search using apple airport extreme setup and you'll get links to a User Guide and setup instructions.

WiFi signals get stronger the closer the machine is to the router and the less interference/blocking of the signal like via walls with metal in them or of thick concrete.
Since the signal emanates outwards in a sphere, your supposed to place the wireless router in a central location in the building so it covers all areas.
The power of the router also has a affect, if your router is old or something not that powerful like a Airport Express, it doesn't have the ability to filter out other signals or enough punch to get through walls etc. or cover a large area as effectively.
If you buy/have a powerful router of newer make and have issues where there is metal in the walls or thick concrete, then you can buy something like OpenMesh and by using Ethernet cables from the back of the router, extend the WiFi signal into other rooms and areas past the blockage.

  • IPhone 5 wifi works in one room but not the other.

I have an iPhone 5 and the wifi is unreliable. It works in the room with the router but when I walk down the hall it doesn't work. I'm talking 20 feet away. So frustrating because the phone is almost worthless. Why would it connect but only in such close range? No other devices have this problem. Yes, I've turned the wifi on and off. Yes, I've restarted the router. Yes, I've checked the WEP. It just makes no sense that it would work in one room but not the next room. Help!

    Hello Gnpco,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Be sure you're in range of your Wi-Fi router (access point).
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and turn Wi-Fi off and on. If your W-Fi setting is dimmed, follow these steps.
    Restart your iOS device.
Tap Settings > Wi-Fi and locate the Wi-Fi network to which you're connected.
    Tap and Forget this Network.
Try to connect to your desired Wi-Fi network.
Note: You may need to enter your Wi-Fi password again if your network requires one.
Turn your Wi-Fi router off and on2. If your ISP also provides cable or phone service, check with them before attempting this step to avoid interruption of service.
Update your device to the latest version of software.
Update your Wi-Fi router to the latest firmware2. For AirPort Base Stations, install updates using the AirPort Utility.

  • WiFi on my MacBook Pro works in one room but not in others

If I bring my MacBook Pro next to an iMac in one room it will connect (albeit slowly) to the internet. When I walk 2 metres into my own bedroom it simply disconnects and stops working, while my phone stays connected and at a similar speed.
The MacBook will recognise my WiFi, and will ask me for the password, even though it's been entered dozens of times. When  I enter this password it says it's incorrect. If I then walk back into the other room WiFi rrconnects.
    What's wrong here?
My MacBook Pro is a late 2011 13" model.

Wireless interference, probably, but Apple's Wireless Diagnostics may supply some additional helpful information.
To use it, hold an option key while you click your Mac's Wi-Fi icon, and choose Open Wireless Diagnostics...
The following authentication dialog will appear:
Authenticate with your Admin password, then click the Continue button in the following:
The network analysis and diagnostic tests will take several minutes to complete:
When it completes, if your wireless network is functioning properly the following will result:
If something is amiss, supposedly the results will be different and you will be presented with helpful information.
Assuming your connection is "working as expected" select Continue to summary and click Continue:
Ignore the pre-populated text field, which is provided as a place for you to type in additional information should Apple ask for it in the course of obtaining technical assistance from them. Apple has no way of knowing where your router is located in your home, and certainly doesn't know if you even have an upstairs bedroom closet.
    Click Continue.
The next step will also take a few minutes:
When it finishes, you will be presented with a summary that may or may not be useful to you:
The above result is uninteresting, but if there are additional actions for you to consider they would be included in the screenshot above.

  • Airport Extreme (5 Gen) suddenly very weak Wifi signal

Hello, everyone.  I have a 5th generation Airport Extreme that was working fine until a few days ago.  My power had gone out, and since then I am getting a very weak Wifi signal.  The network still appears and connects on all of my devices.  However, it is dreadfully slow (0.3 MB/s per Speedtest.net), whereas before it was 50 MB/s.  I have tried resetting to factory settings and opening up the option to 5GHz.  The 5 GHz wireless network works just fine on my iMac.  It doesn't show up as an option on my iPhone, though, and that's what's really bugging me.
I'm wondering if anyone else has had this problem and can help me out.  Of course, my phone support expired a few months ago and now they want $19 for a tech call.  Any help here would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks!

    Reset to factory again.
Setup again using all short names, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. If you were doing this make sure you use different names. Empty all the old names from the clients so they start over with fresh clean setup for wifi.
Use a different name for 5ghz.
Use fixed channels.. try 1, 6, 11 for 2.4ghz and try 36, and 150 for 5ghz.. around about.. exact channel is not such a big thing for 5ghz.
Check the link speed and make sure it is full speed if you are in the same room as the AE.
Test by copying a file on the local lan.. rather than testing to internet which could be a totally unrelated issue.
Test by using ethernet only on a computer plugged into the AE to see if the internet link has gone slow.

  • Weak iphone/android Wifi signal in rooms, APs in hallway

    Hi...
I am struggling with weak signal coverage inside rooms where APs are hung on the outer walls of the rooms i.e. on the hallway, one the sides, not on the cieling. Laptops work fine but mobile devices (iphones, androids, ipads) suffer the most. The hallaway is approximately 30m long, having 4 large rooms, two on either side of the hallway. The walls are made up of cinder blocks with concrete pillars. We have installed 4 2602 APsin the hallway, each with 4 external antennas, in an alternate fashion, i.e. first AP on the left side of the hallway, second on the right, third again on the left, fouth on the right again. The APs are approximately 4m apart.
    We are using
    WLC 5508 7.4.100.0
Cisco 2602 APs with 4 external antennas
I have read the Cisco document of Best practices for Apple devices and enabled all 'n' data rates. That helped a little bit but I know we can get better coverage. I am suspecting that RRM is reducing the Tx power levels since the APs are all in the line of site.
I have to admit that a precise site survey was not performed but I hope to get some advice on tweaking the Tx levels in my scenario.
I am attaching 2 screen shots of the hallway APs (circled) in b/g/n and a/n showing the Transmit levels. I have tweaked one AP tx level only (circled, changed form 4 to 3 under a/n) but didnt get the time to see the results.
    All help is appreciated

    Thanks for the replies,
    Leo,
I have tried to convince our people to place the APs inside, but they rejected this based on health concerns. I tried to dig up something from the internet to alleviate their fears but was not successful. The view of four antennas is what scares them most. Maybe I will remove the antennas and then try to convince them again.
    Scott,
You have mentioned to position the external antennas in a vertical fashion. We have 4 per AP. Shall I point all the four in vertical upward direction or the top two upwards and the bottom two downwards? Just to remind you again that our APs are not mounted on the ceiling but on the side walls of the hallway.
I will force the Tx levels to 2 on all the 4 APs and hope interference will not degrade performance further.
    Thanks again

  • My iPhone 4 after upgrade to iOS 6 become weak signal wife, some one please help me to overcome this problem

My iPhone 4 after upgrade to iOS 6 the wife signal become very weak, please some one can help me to overcome this problem

I had this too when I updated to iOS 6 today.  Solved it by doing a restore to factory conditions followed by a restore to my last backup.  Now its idling around 45% CPU and is back to its snappy performance.

  • Can anyone tell me or give me a link to the latest response from Apple regarding very real weak wifi signal on what seems to be a batch of both the new ipad and the earlier Ipad2. I have just bought a 2nd hand ipad2 and it has a very weak wifi signal

Over the last week or so I have been trawling the internet looking for references to weak wifi signals on the Ipad2 and was staggered by the sheer quantity of people who seem to have identical issues, not just with the ipad2 but also with the new ipad. What annoyed me most from reading the reams upon reams of comments made on the Apple community forum is the fairly large number of people who seemed to believe that 'these' people were either just moaners and wingers or else they must have something wrong with their router set-up rather than a serious fault with their ipad and it seems all because there ipad in question works like a dream.
Obviously I can only speak from my experience, and that is, I have an ipad2 32GB with wifi, purchased about 6 months ago and it works like dream with a good 2-3 bar wifi signal through 2 thick stone walls over 30 feet away. My router is a standard one supplied by my broadband supplier compatible with all 'g','b' and 'n' equipment. However, over a week ago now I bought second hand genuine ipad2 16GB with wifi from a close friend who has just purchased a new ipad3 to replace his old ipad2 (had it for over a year so no longer under warranty). When I started it up downstairs from my router, where I always use my other ipad2 which has a very strong wifi signal, I discovered that the new secondhand ipad2 I had purchased couldnt find a network signal at all. So after doing network resets and all other 'fixes' on the device recommended, I took it upstairs to my office where the router is based and found that the device could now locate the network, but the signal was lost over only 12 feet from the router!
I quizzed my good friend about this issue and he informed me that it has always been like this since he first purchased it and he never thought that it was a fault, it was just the way it was. When he first aquired the device he did think at the time that this distance was poor, but thought nothing of it as he didnt have any other ipad to measur ethe signal strength against, and as his router was in his living room anyway he nothing of it. Fair enough.
So, there we have it. One ipad2 with a very good wifi signal and another ipad2  with a very poor wifi signal running off the same router, both with the same IOS 5.0. ?
As well as all of the other isues that customers have picked up on, such as 'death grip' (which I must say does appear to happen, but personally i dont think that this is a serious issue if you are aware of this issue and have a strong signal anyway), my experience seems to be a good  example of a 'duff' wifi ipad versus a 'great' wifi ipad', an issue confirmed by complaints from a fairly large number of customers who have also reported the same or similar weak wifi signals with both the ipad2 and the ipad3. So, as this shows the weak wifi signal is a very real issue it seems on a batch of ipad2 and 3's, which to my logic is obviously a hardware issue on a batch of early ipad2's and not a software one, otherwise all ipad's would suffer this problem! So, is it a faulty antenna or a faukty network card in an early batch?
So, the bottom line now is, of course, firstly,  how can I get Apple to fix my other ipad2 when the warranty has run out? Any suggestions anyone?
Personally I think good Apple customer service should offer a recall with a replacement on this apparent batch of ipads, dont you?

    Greetings,
I've never seen this issue, and I handle many iPads, of all versions. WiFi issues are generally local to the WiFi router - they are not all of the same quality, range, immunity to interference, etc. You have distance, building construction, and the biggie - interference.
At home, I use Apple routers, and have no issues with any of my WiFi enabled devices, computers, mobile devices, etc - even the lowly PeeCees. I have locations where I have Juniper Networks, as well as Aruba, and a few Netgears - all of them work as they should.
The cheaper routers, Linksys, D-Link, Seimens home units, and many other no name devices have caused issues of various kinds, and even connectivity.
I have no idea what Starbucks uses, but I always have a good connection, and I go there nearly every morning and get some work done, as well as play.
You could try changing channels, 2.4 to 5 Gigs, changing locations of the router. I have had to do all of these at one time or another over the many years that I have been a Network Engineer.
    Good Luck - Cheers,
    M.

  • E90 Very weak WiFi signal

My E90 has a VERY weak WiFi signal, and in places I regularly use a 9500 and my laptop with no problem, my E90 simply will not work e.g. from first floor to ground floor. If I move closer to the Wireless router, then it is fine on both Email and Web.
So it seems purely that the strength on E90 is far weaker than 9500.
    Has anyone else found this?
Is there any way to alter signal strength in the various WiFi settings?
Or is this yet another shortcoming of E90 over 9500?
Message Edited by beaumec on 09-Aug-2008 01:57 PM

    beaumec wrote:
Yes I already altered Tx power settings. Thanks for suggestion. Makes no difference.
It really seems this E90 just has a vastly lower power WiFi rating than my 9500.
It is very tedious to be unable to connect even within one's own home and frankly renders the phone totally useless, quite apart from all the other problems well documented on here.
I think I can see why so many are up for sale on Ebay.
Does anyone at Nokia read these discussion pages and does anyone care that their products seem to fall short in SO MANY aspects?!
That's right, it seems no one reads these discussion.
However, if u have ur problem solved, pls advise

  • Macbook Pro- weak wifi solutions ?

New Macbook Pro weak wifi ??
I am also experiencing weak & varied signal strength on my Macbook Pro. I recently switched from a Macbook & have noticed side by side that the macbook has better internet connectivity & signal strength. I have thought about buying the Apple Time Capsule Router ( & back-up) or Airport Extreme. I am curious if I can expect better signal strength & distance.... This is really annoying as I loved my Macbook for many reasons & have handed it off to one of my sons.. Any info about the signal strength & distance I may expect to get ??

    Hi
I've had a similar problem - see http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=7278377#7278377 . Things continued to get worse, so that sometimes I was losing the signal for several hours at a time: meanwhile my nearby G4 iMac continued to connect with never a hiccup.
In the end replacing the original airport card with a Sonnet Aria Extreme N Mini PCIe 802.11n card has (touching wood, crossing fingers and taking all similar necessary precautions) completely sorted it. No other changes - I'm still using the 11g base station. However, mine was a first revision MBP with an 802.11g card: I guess yours has an 11n card already.

  • Weak wifi internet signal while on battery

Hi everyone, I bought a DV6 in 2011. I got a weird issue a few days ago. I usually browsed on Internet normally on my laptop and everything was fine. But one day, I unplugged the AC adapter from my laptop and I started to experience a very weak wifi internet connection. At this moment I thought something's wrong with my ISP so I called them. After troubleshooting, they stated that the problem comes from my laptop. Randomly, I just plugged the AC adapter from laptop and everything was fine, I mean worked normally . But I unplugged the AC adapter the problem came back. So I wanted to know if there is a relation between the wifi connection strenght and the AC adapter/battery. Please help me

    Hi,
"But it didn't work it's just turning them to black gray scale colors not what i was thinking about."
If you want it to be colored, you'll need to create a color-palette for the 8bppIndexed bitmaps. The keyword for this process is "Color-Quantization".
The whole yellow-green pie you get is from the wrong format. If you convert the 32bpp bitmaps to 24 bpp bitmaps, you loose the alpha channel ("transparency"). You can manually set one color to "transparent" with the mMakeTransparent-method
of the Bitmap class, or simply use gif-images (they are 8bpp with a transparent "key"-color)

  • Weak wifi affects music play

I got into a situation where my music was playing properly. A song would play and then instead of playing the next song, it would just stop. It got worse over time. Eventually I would play a song and it would start for a few seconds and then stop. I would have to go back to the main menu, start music and start the song again. But then it would stop again.
I think that when this happens, if I go to settings and reset network connections the problem goes away. It seems to occur when I have been connected to an extremely weak wifi signal. My impression is that the Touch is trying to connect to the wifi and then losing it and then trying to again, and so on.. Somehow the problem with the wifi spills over and causes it to interrupt music play.
Anyone else notice anything like this?

I think I understand what happened to me, and it has nothing to do with wifi.
The problem is that I went to a workshop and connected my Touch to my laptop to charge it. Normally I syn to a desktop iMac at home. When I connected to the laptop it started to sync to an old copy of my iTunes library so I cancelled the sync and may have disconnected the Touch. Various things got removed. I think that's when my problem started. It turns out that there were songs on my Touch that seemed to be OK and present, but weren't really. When shuffle landed me on one of those songs it would either not play at all or it would play for a while and then stopped. I later checked and realized that one could see the progress bar moving through the song, but no music came out. This problem persisted even after I returned to my home iMac and synced with my full library. I imagine that the sync process also thought the songs were present even though they were not.
The solution was basically to do a sync where I asked not to have any music on my Touch (by deselecting a bunch of playlists) and then reselecting those playlists and syncing again. I'm sure a full restore would have worked as well, but I didn't want to screw around with setting up my photos and a few other things. In retrospect, I probably should have just done a restore.
So I think that the problem is that the sync process didn't cope well with an interruption of a sync with a foreign copy of iTunes. Wifi was not the culprit.
On the other hand, I've already been fooled once by the variability of this problem so I may be wrong this time as well and maybe tomorrow I'll once again have problems playing music.
