Sudden x10 increase in iPhone data use

I’ve got an iPhone 4, with O2 in the UK.  I normally use about 300MB per month.  That’s suddenly gone through the roof; this month I’ve used 950MB in 2 ½ weeks, including 450 MB in 3 days.  That’s a rise from about 10MB a day to about 120MB.  My phone has received 10MB of data in the last 2 hours while apparently doing nothing.
There’s no obvious reason for this.  I’ve closed down all my apps,  deleted an app I’d recently downloaded (flightrader24), reset my network settings, turned-off most location services, don’t use facebook, don’t send diagnostics info, have deleted my iCloud account and upgraded to iOS 6.  It’s a bit better, but still at least double what it was before.
Any suggestions?
Jedzi

Something sending 4.1GB of data would do this.
I know that sounds sarcastic, but it's true. The phone itself won't decide to randomly send data for no reason at all.
You said you sent photos. Any chance you send a video? That would do it. Any chance something got stuck in your outbox and was resent many times? That might do it.
Basically, you'll have to try and figure out what you did. Most likely it was uploading or emailing a large file, and the most likely large file would have been a video.

  • Iphone/data use and wi-fi

I have an Iphone 3 and find I am suddenly using over 400mb according to At&t site, though I am home with a wifi...Any thoughts?

You may want to verify that your home wifi is still working with the iPhone. If you're actually on wifi, you won't use data.
An easy test is to put your phone in airplane mode and turn wifi on.

  • SUDDEN SPIKE IN DATA USE?  ACCURACY OF DATA OVERAGE ALERTS?

Our data usage over the past 6 months averaged 2.25 GB  Top usage during that period was 2.99 GB in May
Since I had been paying for 6 GB and never using it, I switched to 4 GB in May and signed up for Data Usage Overage Alerts.
Then...all "heck" seemed to break loose???
May 23 Received data alert via text: Have Used 75% of 3 GB--Added 1 GB
May 27 Received data alert via text: Have Used 90% of 4 GB
May 29 Received data alert via text: Have Used 100% of 4 GB-Added 2 GB
June 1  Received data alert via text: Have Used 75% of 6 GB
June 7  Received data alert via text: Have Used 90% of 6 GB
OUR BILLING CYCLE ENDED JUNE 9
June 11 Received data alert via text: Have Used 100% of 6 GB (???)
Stunned that between the May 10 - June 9 billing cycle my reported data usage suddenly went over 6 GB for the first time ever, and not doing anything differently at all, I called Verizon Customer Service...
The rep asked if I had been doing something differently with my phone (apps, photos, etc)
I replied that my usage had not changed in any way...
To which she responded that she was unable to track where/why my data use was suddenly so high...???  She had "No way of knowing"
NEED HELP FROM VERIZON AND/OR COMMUNITY:
    1.     ARE VERIZON DATA ALERTS UNRELIABLE?
    2.     HOW/WHY WOULD DATA USAGE INCREASE SO DRAMATICALLY WITH NO WAY FOR CUSTOMER TO CHECK/VERIFY?
    MANY THANKS...

Like radar guns used by local police departments, I firmly believe that without some sort of independent oversight like cable companies use to check the meters Verizon wireless can tell you anything and you the consumer gets hit with high data use.
My best solution for you is to reset the data counter on the phone starting with the first day of your billing cycle. Then check your online data used and see if they match.
I also recommend you contact the FCC or even keep taking them to small claims or a superior court to have them produce records of data meter accuracy. At present no known outside concern can monitor what Verizon is claiming you are using.
Get a good lawyer and take them to court.
    Good Luck

  • HT1689 How can I play podcasts on my iphone without using data?

How can I play podcasts on my iphone without using data?

I used to sync my podcasts to my phone individually, but found out that the Podcast app works better for me.  It continously downloads the podcasts (not really sure when, that's the only thing, when its downloading it may use data depending on where you are) and also deletes the ones i have listened to.  Hopefully that will help you out!

  • Iphone 5 - "use cellular data for" option only shows Facetime and Passbook

I have an iphone 5 and I am trying to manage my cellular data usage,
When I go into Settings - Cellular and I look at the "use cellular data for" option, there are only 2 apps on the list Facetime and Passbook.
I have seen other posts online that show a long list of apps that you can toggle Cellular data on and off.
How can I see a longer list of apps.

In Settings/General/Restrictions if you tap on Cellular Data Use there should be 2 options: Allow Changes or Don't Allow Changes. If you don't see these options is that where you see "Cellular data is turned off for 'Setting'?
Do you have a corporate MS Exchange email account on your phone? If so your administrator may have added an override on this setting.

  • Why is my iphone 5 using so much data, way more than I ever used before.  How do I fix it?

I am using waaaaay more data than ever before since switching to an iphone 5.  I have gone over my data plan in just a few days.  I used 10g in 2 weeks and I hardly had it on.  Help.

If you go to Settings > Cellular and look at "Use Cellular data for" each app will display the amount of cellular data used since you last did "Reset Statistics" on that screen. Also if you tap "System Services" at the bottom of that list of apps it will give details on system usage of cellular data. That may help you identify the culprit.

  • A relative synced my iphone with his laptop without me knowing. It had a passcode on the phone but the sync still worked. I have since found out he is quite IT knowledgeable and has been known to track other peoples phones.  How is this data useful to him

A relative synced my iphone with his laptop without me knowing. It had a passcode on the phone but the sync still worked. I have since found out he is quite IT knowledgeable and has been known to track other peoples phones that he wants to know information about.  How is my data useful to him and can he restore this data on another iPhone and run it parallel to mine? I have had people send me messages which I have not received. These have been screen shot to me later including time and I have just not got them. I had 4 weeks worth of messages go missing from my phone..I know that he synced my phone because his work laptops I'd came up in my settings. Also if the above can be done can he change the settings on my actual phone and access my location without placing tracking software on my phone.  Can someone please help here as I can't restore a backup to my phone for obvious reasons and refuse to change my number because of this loser.

Connect the device to the computer.
In iTunes, select the content desired to sync.
    Sync.
This is all described in the User's Guide, reading it may be a good place to start.

You will Not be able to get rid of it entirely...
Other is usually around 1 GB...
A  ' Large Other ' usually indicates Corrupt Data...
First Try a Restore from Backup...
But... if the Large Other Persists, that is an Indicator of Corrupt Data in the Backup...
Then a Restore as New is the way to go...

Does tethering my iPad to my iPhone 4s use more data than using an iPad that has it's own data plan?

No, it won't work.. the Airports are not media devices.. they have no brains .. no media extensions.. and itunes must be running on a computer.
You can however watch movies from storage but not with itunes..
See how people use tools like VLC to get around Apple's built in iTunes limitations.

Why is the iPhone 5 using so much data I have read a lot of complaints and I have went over on my plan and never have?
I have even turned off LTE. Cut off my cellular data off of apps. Still uses data I switched back to my iPhone 4 cause I had used my
    Data in 2 weeks!

I have the same problem on my 4S 64G: I updated to 7.1.1 and burned through my cellular data allowance without running anything that ought to be using it. I incurred an overage charge on Thursday, my new billing cycle started on Friday, and I immediately had used 3/4 of my allowance for the new cycle. I typically do not use my allowance in an entire month so burning through it in a day or two twice in one week is very much not right.
Possibly unrelated or not: last night I was out, did NOT use any apps that should use cellular data, and came home and my phone refused to connect to my home wifi despite turning this and that on and off. I burned cellular allowance while wifi was available.
It seems like someting on my phone, whether an app or the iOS itself, is using cellular data even while my phone is not in use. All I could do is turn off Cellular Data in Settings but that very much diminishes the usefulness of a phone that has served me well -- without data overages! -- for several years.
    Please fix this, Apple!

  • Canada iPhone 3G, accessing data using WIFI

I am with Rogers (Canadian wireless provider). I was in the US this past week. I left the DATA ROAMING switch to OFF so I would not incur data roaming charges. Instead I wanted to access data using WIFI instead. I found free WIFI hotspots, was able to connect, however whenever I tried to access data it did not work. I went to an Apple Store in the States and they said the Data Roaming overrides all data access regardless if you trying to access data using WIFI or Cell towers. Can someone confirm this is true?

this same problem keeps happening to me.. im with telcel in mexico and everytime I go to the US I cannot access free wifi hotspots, it says something about enabling international data roaming. could it be a bug on the iphone set-up? how come not everyone has this problem?
im going to Europe soon and I would like to be able to check my emails at free hotspots, how can I fix this? my only thought is that with data roaming off the phone automatically doesnt let you join the wifi network or doesnt let u use it.
    any thoughts?

  • IPhone 4S uses 3G data even with WiFi network available

I've been trying to figure out why the iPhone still uses 3G data even when it has a WiFi network available. It's usually just a few MBs per day, and as such - I attributed to niotifications, location services, etc.
But today, I got a really nasty surprise...
As I woke up, my iPhone showed the WiFi indicator as usual, but internet was slow... as if it was using cellular data. Something i quickly confirmed by trying to access  stuff on my internal LAN and not being able to.
Worst of all, my iPhone went through over 600MB of cellular data overnight - that's my entire data limit for a month! - meaning I'll have to pay for neary 400MB of excess data usage paid at overly inflated prices (I'll be paying nearly 3x my monthly bill just for the excess data!!!)
As if all the bugs I've been facing weren't enough: Invalid SIM, showing full strength 3G signal when it's actually "offline"... Now I have to face stupidly wasted mobile data when I'm at home within WiFi range?
I've been an iPhone use for years, and have upgraded every year to the new models... but this iPhone 4S has been my worst experience ever with a mobile device, and ruined all the trust I had in Apple devices...
I sincerely don't know what to do next... if I'll still wait for a 5.1 update that may/may not fix all the issues I (and thousands others, as seen by the discussions here) have been having... or if I cut my losses and try my luck elsewhere...
Tired of serving as a guinea pig and doing all this debug work for Apple...

The WiFi data is recorded separately - and the mobile data use was verified using the operator "reporting" service (and later sending me the warning SMS of the data use).
The iPhone was in the home screen, locked, and "sleeping" when the data was used, so the only option would be the iCloud backup - which, in any case, should never ever use the 3G data (and never has until today).
If the WiFi was not working, then it should either: not have internet access; not show the WiFi connected signal in the status bar. As it was, it was showing WiFi access, but using the mobile data just the same.
Which, from what I understand, could have "tricked" iCloud into doing its regular backup thinking it was over WiFi... but in reality doing it over cellular data.
