Suddenly blue links in Mail message no longer open

Assisting an elderly relative. He has a six year old iMac running Tiger. Uses Apple Mail
He has two mail accounts. One from his ISP (POP) and an IMAP account for his AOL mail. The latter is the account into which most of his messages come.
Suddenly last week he finds that hyperlinks in any mail message no longer open. Formerly he clicked on the blue link and the link opened in Safari.
Now nothing happens when he clicks on a blue link which has been included in a mail message. Control clicking on the link also does not work.
What might have gone wrong and how do we fix this?
(His browser is working perfectly ; links on a web page open)

Hi Barbara,
Could be many things, we should start with this...
"Try Disk Utility
1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
3. Click the First Aid tab.
4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.
Also, Very Important, how much Free Space is on your Hard Drive first of all? Click on the Macintosh HD on the Desktop, then do a Get Info on it.

  • Links in Mail (Mac) no longer open a new window in Firefox.

When I click on a link in a Mail (Version 4.4 (1082)) message, it simply defaults to the existing open tab in Firefox, rather than opening a new tab and the page indicated by the link. This just started today and I don't know of anything I changed, other than upgrading to Snow Leopard (Version 10.6.6) a few weeks ago. I searched preferences in Mail and Firefox but did not see options.

  • Firefox is my default browser but when I click on a link in mail it no longer will open.

Firefox is my default browser. It always opened links from email in Firefox. Now, suddenly, when I click on a link in email, it no longer opens. If I make Chrome default, it will open in that browser. I've tried switching back a couple of times after reboot, but links no longer open in firefox. I don't know what happened to change it.

This problem just arose for me today. Very frustrating. Tried all of the suggestions here without success. Then a very simple solution came to me:
UNINSTALL CHROME. I haven't used Chrome for a long while anyway since it seems to have chronic problems of one sort or another. Firefox does 95% of what I need, and Internet Explorer can handle the other 5%.
After uninstalling Chrome I clicked a mailto link. It asked me what program to use and did not list Firefox as an option for some reason. In the Tools menu, I chose "Options" and went to the "Applications" tab. Searched for "mailto". There was a single entry - when Chrome was installed it gave me no options to switch. After uninstalling Chrome I was able to change that. It still did not list Firefox, but it did list "Gmail". Selecting that causes my Gmail to open in Firefox.
I have no idea whether Google or Microsoft is responsible for this, but I'm inclined to give the hairy eyeball to Google for this one. It's the sort of stunt they'd pull on Microsoft, then pretend it was just a mistake. Just one guy's opinion, of course.

  • Mail will no longer open links

Normally, clicking on links in mail automatically opens them in Safari, but now I am getting the error message:
"Mail was unable to open the URL “****”. No associated application could be found."
Safari seems to be functioning normally, otherwise. I can still paste those links into the browser to open them.

    Hi,
In Safari preferences > General, select a different application (anything) as the default internet browser, close the preferences then go back to the preferences and change it back to Safari again. Quit Mail, then restart it and cross your fingers

    Hi.
Do you mean SAP mails or internet mails?
If they are internet mails, maybe you must configure the job for sending this emails to run more times. It's the task on SCOT transaction.
If you mean the SAP mails maybe you can try to send the mails with the "urgent" option.
    thanks and regards

  • MAIL ICON NO LONGER OPENS MAIL

I can no longer open up my mail.  When I select the icon it will activate for a few seconds then goes off.  No error message given just won't open.  I also noticed I can not move any of the items in the dock.  Can't rearrainge them or move them to trash.  All icons are frozen where they are.  All programs except for mail will open.  Have tried closing all programs and restarting but that does not fix the problem.  Any suggestions?

You don't say what OS you're running but you are in the Mountain Lion section.
I would start by opening terminal (applications/utility) and type the following
    rm ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.dock.plist
    rm ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/Envelope\ Index
I would then shutdown and reboot into recovery (command-R at the boot chime) and select my boot drive, then select repair.
After repair comes back clean, you can reboot normally.

    however, it also says

  • After updating to 3.6.10 links in Outlook 2007 no longer open - "An error occurred in sending the command to the application"

After updating to Firefox 3.6.10 this morning, Outlook 2007 can no longer open up links embedded in emails. Normally when you clicked a link it would open up Firefox and send you to the website, but when you click on any link it now says:
General failure. The URL was: [url here]
An error occurred in sending the command to the application.
I don't know what happened. I didn't change any other settings on the computer.
I am running Windows 7 64 Professional, MS Outlook 2007 with latest updates, and Firefox 3.6.10

  • Mail program no longer opens

I have two problems that simulatenously appeared on one of my co-worker's eMac. She complained that she could no longer open her mail program or safari. I was able to set up firefox on her computer and it works fine. Both mail and safari will appear to open; and if you go to force quit, I can see both application in there.
So I have a couple of questions:
    1) Are these problems related - is it as easy as reinstalling the applications?
    2) How can I back up the emails that she has stored on her computer?
    Thanks

Re-installing Apple applications rarely resolves such a problem or any problems.
This is usually caused by a required font problem.
Check Multiple applications quit unexpectedly or fail to launch for troubleshooting steps.
How can I back up the emails that she has
    stored on her computer?
To backup all Mail.app data including account information, do the following.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on an external hard drive used for backup purposes only or burn it to CD media.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. The com.apple.mail.plist file stores all account information and general Mail.app preferences. Do the same with this file.
    Done.

  • 7.1.2 update affects links in mail.  Will not open to web

After latest update I cannot follow links in mail to the web.  They stopped working.  Any fixes yet?

Try a reset and see if that fixes it. No data will be lost.
Reset the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider if it appears on the screen - let go of the buttons. Let the iPad start up.

  • Mail crashes, no longer opens -- your thoughts?

After only a few days of use, my iPhone's Mail app refused to open. I tapped the Mail icon, and it would open for an instant (without displaying my Inbox's contents), and then disappear, leaving me back at the Home screen.
I tried deactivating the one account I had set up (in Settings > Mail), and that fixed it. So, Mail would open, but of course, it just prompted me to configure an account, since I had deactivated the sole account (which was IMAP, BTW).
I just did a full System Restore, and thankfully that fixed the issue, but at the expense of losing my custom settings and Maps bookmarks. (I didn't want to restore from the backup, because I thought the backup would have the same crashing issue.)
Has anyone else experienced this issue? I couldn't find anything like it in the tech docs or on these forums. Just wanted to share my story in case it's useful to others.

That sounds like some major corruption of the mail account files.
You could have tried deleteting just the mail account, and recreating it to see if the problem was related to just the mail account files. Restoring is more of a "last" resort, which resets EVERYTHING to ground zero. Glad it works, though.

  • Deleting Mail Messages Before They Open

Is there a way to delete an email message BEFORE it opens (to avoid potential viruses)?

This help doc http://support.apple.com/kb/ta21164?viewlocale=en_us explains that there is a difference between looking at a message in the preview pane and actually opening it. If you're only using the preview pane and delete it, it was never actually opened.

  • Links within Mail messages

Any inbox message which contains a link displays a ghost over the top of the link address .  It's a tiny, shimmering picture of the web page that it links to.  It's just big enough to cover the link, but not big enough to be able to read anything on the little web page that is displayed.

Mail 6.0 has been acting weird on me as well.  Whenever I have a message from something with a link involved, it gets somewhat distorted. I posted a similar discussion as well.  The Apple genius told me it has to do something with the software.  When I had Lion, I never had any problems.  He sent my photo to the engineers so I'm waiting on them.

  • TS3276 I suddenly cannot send e-mail messages. It takes hours to send. I haven't changed any settings.

My mail does not let me send messages. It can take hours for it to be sent. I have not changed any settings, it just suddenly started yesterday.

    Hi there Bahtat67,
If I understand correctly you can send mail without issue, but you cannot receive new email. I would recommend you use these steps specifically from the following article, named:
Get help with Mail on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch
    Restart your iOS device.
Delete the affected email account from your device.
Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Tap the affected email account.
    Tap Delete Account.
    Add your account again.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling
