Suddenly boot problem - no post - then crashes in windows

hi there! first off, here's my system:
P4 2.80C @ FSB 200 HT enabled
Corsair DDR400 2-2-2-5
865PE Neo2-LE
Sapphire Radeon 9500 no OC
Chieftec 360W
Western Digital 120GB & Seagate 20GB no RAID
BIOS - default settings
WinXP
Alright, my system has always worked fine in the past, but yesterday it started acting up, making more noises than usual, CPU working hard at low workload, and things generally being slow. This morning when i turned my PC on, it showed the first boot page, but wouldnt continue, post or accept any keypresses. I turned it off and tried turning it on later, and it was able to boot completely. So i was in windows, and everything was moving slowly. "My Computer" wouldnt open, my browsers would crash and i wasnt able to launch any games or benchmarks. then - BOOM - the computer turned itself off. so i startet up again, suspecting a virus and whatnot. A friend said it was probably that winBLAST thing that was going around earlier. so i tried to remedy it by doing "shutdown -a", and running a symantec blastfix.exe, which didnt find anything. i started a full virus scan with norton 2003, but didnt make it all the way through, as the computer would crash at some point. not at any special event, just after a random amount of time.
Hope that's enough information, will gladly supply more if needed.
bry - out

Check if your CPU Fan is failing as overheated CPUs will caused smiliar problems. Also check for other hardwares if they are burnt or suspicious of overheating.

  • MBP sudden boot problem, gray screen then black zombie

    Hello all -
I've had leopard installed on my MBP since Oct 27th and it's been running great, although I've noticed several times when I shut down, the machine really hadn't - I'd stick it in my briefcase only to find that the mac was on and the battery was down 50% an hour later. Searching the boards, I'm gonna assume that I have the same problem as those reporting the "screen goes black after a few minutes" problem. That's all weird enough, but last night it shifted into high gear.
I used the machine for a couple hours, nothing special, just some web browsing. I shut it down as normal. Later I came back to it and the power button did not turn it on... I then realized that the HD was still spinning. I touched a bunch of keys, worked the pad, clicked power a couple times thinking it was in some kind of weird sleep, nothing. So I held the power down long enough for a forced "off."
Then I turned it on, it chimes, comes to the gray screen, spinning gear goes for a bit (normal amount of time) then the blue screen flashes for the tiniest fraction of a second and the screen goes black. I waited for a bit and after a little while I noticed the faintest outline of dialog on the screen - I could not read it, but it looked to have four buttons. I pressed the Enter key, the dialog disappeared and the HD spun about for a bit, but the screen never came back. I forced it off again.
Starting it this time I went to Single User start up, then did a fsck -fy and the system reported OK. after Exit I watched closely as the exact same thing happened - it got to the Starting Login Window application line, the screen flashed blue for a fraction of a second and the thing went black again. (I did this cycle a few times, since I read one thread here that mentioned similar circumstances and said it worked againn after the 4th try...)
I tried a Safe Mode start, it took a lot longer to start, but essentially the same thing happened. One additional symptom - once when I was doing the reboot I think I saw a "Parallels Hypervisor" line before the screen blanked out. I was hoping someone here might be able to let me know how to ditch that (there's no /etc/rc3.d and such that I'd recognize, so I'm not sure where the startup items are...) - I'd like to push the possible notion that Parallels has somehow messed with the machine. BTW - I did an upgrade, rather than a clean install on the machine. Parallels has been on the machine the whole time, and no new software has been installed since I installed Leopard.
I am unfortunately about a thousand miles away from my Leopard disk for the next 5 days and was really not expecting to be without my machine... so I hope anyone here might have some more things I can try to get the little bugger back online. Even deep-deep-deep tech options and symptoms might help, I'm unfraid to try most anything.
    TIA,
    /perk
(Please note that my profile machine is my desktop, not my MPB)

No worries mate. Creeped me out pretty big, but when my Leopard DVD did the same thing upon bootup I knew the problem was weirder than what I had thought.
Glad to hear you got it all straight as well.
    /p

  • Boot problems with Satellite Pro M40 running Windows XP SP2

The computer suddenly shut down when I was using it. I switched it back on and all I get now is a screen which apologize for any inconvenience and telling me that Windows did not start successfully, with options to start in their different modes ie.
Safe/normal etc. I have tried them all, without success, if anyone has any ideas I would be most grateful.

    Hi
    > Safe/normal etc. I have tried them all, without success,
Because of your statement in the first post I assume the notebook does not boot successfully and you cannot access the Windows.
In such case I would recommend the simplest OS reinstallation from the Recovery CD.
If this procedure fails, the hardware malfunction is possible In such cases its not easy to say what could be wrong.
But we should focus on the memory and HDD
However, if you dont have own resources for troubleshooting I would recommend contacting a technician for an additional help.
    Good luck

  • P965 Boot problems - not POSTing

Just recently built the following system:
    MSI P965 Neo Motherboard
    E6300 Core 2 Duo CPU
    2 x 512mb DDR2 800 (Corsair XMS2 TWIN2X1024A-6400 C5)
    Sapphire ATI x1900gt Graphics
    2 x Samsung Spinpoint P120 Sata 250gb HDD
    1 x LG H10A DL DVD-RW drive
I originally installed into a Arctic Cooling Silentium T2 case but the system wouldnt boot.  All fans spun up, hdd spun up, two LEDs briefly lit ont he graphics card (supposed to happen) but then nothing.  No bios/POST.  I did have the extra cable supplying the 6 pin PCIe attached.  Memory was located in the the correct slots etc.
I figured that the graphics card required more power than the PSU could supply (only a 350w supply so cutting very fine).  So I tried with a 420w PSU I had to hand but same result - no post.  Still figured this PSU may be a bit weak so I used the trick to start a PSU while disconnected from a motherboard to enable one PSU to supply the system while the second provided the additional 12v for the Graphics.  Still no post.  I even went out and bought a decent 500w supply (~400w on 12v rails) but still exactly the same result so figure power is NOT the problem.
I decided to strip out each of the components one by one (one stick of memory cycled between all slots), Graphics removed and reseated, CPU removed and reseated.  HDD's disconnected, DVD disconnected.  My monitors are analogue - so using teh DVI-VGA adaptors and have tested both ports (and SVHS just fro luck).  I have used the jumper to clear the CMOS.  Don't know what the MB bios version is as I have never managed to post.
Everything is new - and this is first trip into PCIe territory so I haven't got any other systems to swap out and test components into.  So far I figure either MB or Graphics - usually find problems with any of the other components will still allow bios.  Can't be HDD's as I can test these on older system.  Unless there is an incompatibility with the Corsair memory I can't see that I would recieve two dead sticks.  That leaves CPU, GPU and MB - but currently have no way to test independently.
ATI have suggested an RMA but I want to avoid sending of until I can be pretty certain that graphics is the problem - I don't really fancy waiting 2-3 weeks for them to turn round and tell me card is fine and charge me postage.
Appreciate any thoughts you may have on further testing...
    B.

babbaloerie - I hope to get a PCIe card to test tomorrow so hopefully I can rule the Graphics out as the problem.
Having already tried a silentium PSU (T2 in my case) and a number of higher power PSU's (and combination of higher power PSU's (one powering board, one supplying the additional +12v to the graphics) I have come to the conclusion that it isn't a power problem.  Once I have resolved the problem I may even rebuild (yet again) back into the Silentium case - it was wonderfully quiet.  You do literally have to stick you head about 5 cm from the case to hear it - and I can honestly say that is the first time I can actually say this.  Normally 'silent' or 'whisper quiet' is considerably louder (the 17dBA Igreen PSU I have is significantly louder).   I plan have a Zalman reserator ready to go (externally powered so will actually reduce PSU loads slightly) - the result will be pure silence!  In fact I may actually take 10 minutes to take some proper noise measurements.
It could be a memory problem - but I would expect the bios to post with none present...
It could be the CPU - but without another MB it is difficult to tell.  Haven't tried to boot without CPU - would I expect to get a bios post?  If so I could probably do that tomorrow.
I have tried pretty much everything I have come across over the last 10 years of putting these things together... maybe I have finally received a DOA part.
NovJoe - while a number of MSI motherboards do come with and support the d-bracket for diagnosing problems the P965 doesn't.  I actually have one on my older K7N2 ILSR - but there isn't anywhere to attach it to on the P975.
I would happily let Sapphire/MSI/ATI etc test components but it takes forever - and one of them is likely to turn out fine so I will end up paying heavily for the privelidge.  At least with buying new parts on the web it will either solve my problem or I can use the distance sellings regulations in the UK to return.
    Bob.
A quick update - just stripped down the system and rebuilt without the case (just in case there was a chance of a short).  Also tried booting without the CPU installed (although I am not sure if I expected bios to post without a cpu).

  • Audtion CC hangs, then crashes on Windows 7 Ultimate x64

I'm not sure what's going on as it has launched previously.  It hangs on the splash screen while displaying, "initializing required application components... (DLMS)" then eventually stops responding and crashes.  I've cleared preferences, in additio to re-installing completely (while deleting preferences).  I've logged out, then back into creative cloud.
I haven't tried to launch all of my Adobe CC programs, but Illustrator CC works fine, as does 32-bit Photoshop CC; however, 64-bit Photoshop CC also hangs and crashes upon opening.
Thanks in advance for any help on this!

  • NF980-G65 Must press reset button to get post boot problem.

I've seen other posts here & on New Egg where I ordered the MSI 980-G65 Mobo, about when booting for the first time you may find you need to press the reset button to post boot. It seems this is not an isolated problem.
I read the mobo book while building & read the first thing to do is get into the Bios & load optimized defaults on page En-32. I did that & I always have to press the reset button to post boot every time I start up for the first time. Any self restarts after that are ok. I installed Gskill Ripjaw series DDR3 1600Mhz ram & set the voltage for 1.5v. It booted with ram default @ 1333Mhz. I set the NB freq to 1:4 to set it to 16oo Mhz, I thought it was cuz you have  to OC the settings to get the ram to run @ 1600Mhz. I still had to press reset to get it to post. I know that making any changes other then keeping default settings may cause these problems. I also read here someone else stated to clear the CMOS, move the ram around & it worked for him. I didn't do that.  I decided to load the failsafe defaults, save it, & restart. It booted ok at cold boot. So, back into the Bios I reset all my settings all over again, saved it, rebooted ok from cold start.
One thing to know, The setting for ganged ram @ 128bit is duel channel mode. The unganged setting puts you in single channel mode @ 64bit.  Useing 2 sticks, 2X2GB in Dimms 1&2 as per the mobo book duel channel mode arrangement. CPUZ will verify that your in duel channel mode.
My thanks to the person who also posted about this problem.

    Hi
I hope you don't mind me replying to this thread but it hasa a lot of my problems in it.
I have just bought an NF980-G65 mob., with an AMD Phenom II X4 955 (Deneb 4c)
3.2 GHz, DDR3-1333, 2 MB L2, 6 MB. I also bought the G-skill 1600 ram, I was a bit put of when it came as it was for an Intel pro, as stated previous.
I have it set up with two Nvidia 7800gt G.cards.
I installed a new hard drive W.Dig. 650gb black. when I tried loading win7 64 i kept getting a blue screen with various faults on it.
It would work as far as the grey line "loading windows" and even the logo but would then crash.
The amazing thing is that i put my old hardrive back in and it booted up as 32bit win7 and loaded the drivers.
this seemed to work until i tried to install a game and it crashed again all i saw was a quick message about "memory"
needles to say i have returned the g-skill ram as that was the only thing not in the mob recommended ram.
I am with any ram now and I'm having difficulty finding somewhere that has a stock of recommended ram i.e.
Patriot PGS34G1600LLKA, GeIL GV34GB1600C8DC, or lots of very expensive Kingston. £100 is about my limit.
Any way that said, as you are running G-Skill ram do you think i had another problem?
    the one i bought was GSKill 4GB DDR3 Dual Channel Memory Kit (2x2GB) PC3-12800 1600MHz (7-8-7-24)
    Model Number: F3-12800CL7D-4GBRM
could you confirm the model number of the g-skill in case mine was a differant type.
    thank you

  • Multiple sudden booting and other problems:  Help!

I have experienced a sudden problem that makes me afraid to shut down my iMac until I sort it out. I have had it for five wonderful, flawless years.
When I tried to boot today, four times it would not. I got to the grey Apple screen and a processing "clock," but it would not go beyond that in any reasonable time. I finally left it running trying to boot. It did eventually, but glacially slow. Then, there was a message that: "!You have inserted a disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read. To continue with the disk inserted, click ignore." However, I had NO "disk inserted."
    More wierdness followed.
I tried to insert a memory stick to backup my hard drive, and got the same "disk containing no volumes that Mac OSX can read" message. This is the same stick onto which I have previously backed up with no problem.
I then tried to run my McAfee virus scan, but wanetd to update it first. It does not appear to update, even though it says that it is doing so. The starting message continues to say that I last updated months ago. The Virus scan did, however, apparently run using whatever version it actually had in it, and reported only 2 noncritical errors.
I then tried to run Disk Utility, and it won't launch. I "bounces" up an down in the Dock, but then just closes.
I then opened iMail, and all the previous messages showed as unread, even though they actually all were read.
So, I almost could not boot, get a weird "unreadable disk" message, can't get the drive to recognize a memory stick in order to back up to it, can't update my Virus protection, can't run Disk Utility and am getting weird iMail .
Other things seem to be working okay, although sometimes very slowly.
What's going on, and what do I do?
Separate question: I want to insert a disk into my CD tray to use as a startup disk if I encounter another booting problem. Which CD do I use? Mac OSX Install Disk 1? Mac OSX Install Disk 2? (I think all the Software Restore disks include applications other than the OSX.
Final question: how do I get the CD tray to open on the front my iMac (the "tongue" type tray out of the round base) if I have another booting problem, so that I can insert a disk to use for startup?
    HELP! (thanks)

    Ali,
Sorry for being slow to respond. I have been trying to get things fixed with Repair Disk.
To answer your question first, my hard drive is 74.52 GB, with 55.59GB available, so I don't think that's the problem.
Quite a few things (but not everything) work once the hard drive boots, which is VERY VERY slow. However, any other media I try to use to backup (Memory sticks, CDs) can't be recognized. I get the "disk containing no volumes that Mac OS X can read" messae. The CD's also produced a message when I tried to name them of an "unexpected error."
I followed your repair instructions, but it did not solve the problem. The Repair Disk effort produced an error message under "Checking catalog file" of "Keys out of order." I ran Repair Disk multiple times (at least 10x), but the same message kept coming up. I also tried running Repair Permissions, which took about four hours to run. Repair Disk produced the same error message.
I also found an older Discussion string of messages about application Chess (installed with the basic Mac install disks) being corrupted. I trashed it. No difference.
That message string also talked about some people having problems after installing iTunes 6.0.2, but I am running 7.0.2, and it has been on the computer about two weeks beforre any of this started.
I will try Sherry Johnson's suggestions next.
    thanks for your help.

    Erase and Install
    1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Quit DU after formatting completes and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
    5. After restart into Snow Leopard download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

  • Boot problems - can I "Archive and Install" to back-up and then reformat?

    Hi all!
I'm having booting problems with my PowerBook 15".
I've ran the hardware/disk utility tests and everything seems fine. The problem is, I get a blue-screen with the spinning sun-dial or sthing. It keeps spinning and spinning! I tried going into safe-mode, but it doesn't work!
My question is, can I do an "Archive and Install"... load a fresh copy of OS X on my PowerBook so that I can back-up my data? Would this work?
    Please help, thanks!

I took the risk and managed to install Tiger over my previous OS successfully! Afterwards, I backed up everything as fast as I could, and then did a Clean Install. Worked like a charm! haha..
However... after doing the Clean Install, I realised that I am UNABLE to install "Windows Media Player for Mac OX X" on to my machine!?!?! I downloaded "WindowsMediaInstaller.bin", and opened it with StuffIt Expander. StuffIt Expander just hung at the "Preparing" mode and says "Preparing..."
Anyone else has/had the same problem? Please help, as a number of online radio sites require Windows Media Player to run, and now I can't access them!! =(

  • Problems backing up then booting from a firewire drive on Intel Macs

    Hi
I wanted to help a friend back up his Macbook and then install Bootcamp.
I took over my trusty external firewire drive (Makeytec MHD-25 Combo enclosure + Samsung 80Gb HDD).
    So... I ran Disk Utility
Highlighted the firewire drive, clicked Partitions, named it "Backup". Clicked Options -> GUID -> Partition
I backed up his computer with SuperDuper onto Backup. SuperDuper automatically makes the drive bootable. At the end Backup was mounted on the desktop and all files are there.
But Backup wouldn't boot the computer. Instead I got a grey screen for a long time, then the Apple logo with the spinning cog, then after a few more minutes a circle with a bar through it (like a no smoking sign minus the cigarette)
    Things I tried after this....
Partitioned the drive again, double checking that I had selected GUID
Erased the drive zeroing out all the data
Backing up using CCC (with make drive bootable option checked) instead of SuperDuper
Could not get this drive to boot his computer.
Then took the drive back home. Tried doing it with my MacMini (same problem)
Then plugged it into my Powerbook, Partitioned it as Apple Partition Map, ran SuperDuper, rebooted from it fine.
My conclusion: The drive will boot a G4 just fine, but not an Intel based Mac.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    A workaround:
The drive enclosure also has support for USB "1.1/2.0", including the ever important cable.
I reconnected it to the Macbook, partitioned the drive back to GUID, then I used super duper to back the Macbook drive (again!). I used firewire (only because it was much quicker - 6Mb/s vs 2.8Mb/s)
Once I did the backup, I ejected the external drive, disconnected it, then plugged it back in with USB, then selected it as the start up disk, then hit restart. Machine rebooted just fine although very slowly.
Still doesn't answer the question of why booting via the firewire port works fine with a G4 mac but not Intel.

  • I'm getting popup notices that Firefox has a problem, and Windows is looking for a solution; then it closes Firefox and says Windows will let me know if it finds a solution. No crash report window comes up.

Firefox is my default browser on my new laptop, with OS Windows 7. I've now had several instances where a Windows popup comes up saying Firefox has developed a problem and may have to close. It also indicates Windows "is looking for a solution to the problem." No solution is found, however, and Firefox is forced to close, with the happy notice that Windows will let me know if it finds a solution to the problem. If there is any tech data on the crash, I'm not sure where to find it, and no Firefox crash report window comes up. I thought it was an anomaly the first time, but this has now occurred at least 4 times in the past several days.

  • Boot Camp 2.1 Crashed My Windows

I did a disk backup of the windows image after the crash.
    Then i deleted the partition.
Now i can't re-partition the disk b/c some files cannot be moved.
I'm not paying $99 for a defrag program that windows provides for free on their side.
Somebody at Apple needs to address this quick. If boot camp 2.1 is crashing computers all over the place (another poster mentioned Norton as a possible conflicting program), they need to provide proper support.

My problem with Boot Camp is a little more complex. I am running a Mac Pro 1st generation. I have four Sea Gate 750 gig 32 megs cache per disc. I have ten gigs off certified 667 megahertz ram installed. I DID NOT PARTITION MY MAIN DRIVE! I dedicated hard drive bay four, meaning I gave windows it's own disc. I don't want windows anywhere near my main OS X system besides partitioning your hard drive makes you loose performance. Anyway I have had windows installed for a week now, as off two days ago on boot up almost everything boots up and I get a message stating that "Boot Camp has encountered a problem and needs to close" and thats it (Taking all my OS X driver with it every time). It does it every time. I have uninstalled the drivers from the Leopard disk and reinstalled then got the 2.1 update and still have the same problem. I am stumped on this one. Why did I ever put windows on my Mac anyway. Any Idea's anyone? I know this is a Apple driver problem not windows, windows otherwise is running like a champ on this monster for me.

  • Vcore + Booting problem

    Hi,
I have posted previously (and thanks to all for responses).
I now have the following problems:
    1.  Computer will not boot from cold, or from a normal windows reboot.  I am required first to remove the power cable, then plug it back in and hit the power-up button.
    2.  Through trial and error with my previous problem I discovered that the only way I can keep my computer stable is to use the nvsystem utility to reduce the vcore voltage to 1.5.  At default (1.65) the computer will hang after prolonged use - with no extreme temperatures being reported.
This wouldn`t be so bad, but the nvsystem util is buggy as hell and crashes my comp completely 4-5 times before finally working.
I have tried the stickied method of setting vcore voltage in bios with no luck.
If you have no advice, some sympathy will be most welcome anyway.
    Specs:
    XP 2800+ (TB core) @ 2.25Ghz w/default fan + arctic silver 3
    MSI K7N2 Delta
    2x512 Kingston Value Ram  (I know, I know....)  (1:1 w/fsb)
    Terratec EWS 88MT
    ATI Radeon 9800 pro
    No-name 350W PSU
    Thx

Thanks for the feedback - and how I long to whistle a happy tune.
Given the nature of my problem, how confident are you that a pair of good quality 512Mb sticks will be the answer?
I`m not questioning your advice - I`m just not entirely convinced I won`t end up going out and buying a new mobo, then a new cpu as well if the new memory doesn`t clear up the problem.
It just seems strange that a voltage reduction in the core would *increase* stability - pointing to a heat issue in the cpu - but all temps are well within normal thresholds.  Also, it would seem strange, given that I now own a quality psu that any core voltage setting would interfere with the supply to the ram.
As you can tell, I`m at my wits end, and also on the verge of replacing all components other than my gfx card. :D

  • P965 Platinum booting problems

    Hi all,
I have a serious problems with stability of my system. It seems to behave pretty randomly. Every now and then when the power button is pressed the system seems to start booting up for 2-3 seconds, then suddenly turns off and re-boots again. If everything goes ok windows is loaded and sysem is pretty much stable. However every one in five booting attempts ends up with system trying to boot a couple of times, getting on and off constantly so there is not even a chance o get to BIOS. After some time the POST screen shows up saying that an overclocking attempt has failed and system will be restored to te defaults. The story is that there has never been an overclocking attempt whatsoever since I can not get he system running stable at stock settings!!! Anyway, I get finally to BIOS but sometimes next restart of the system occurs and the story is all over again. When I finally get to the settings and restore the defaults the system will reboot alright and for the next couple of times it will turn on normally untill the next doggy start forces me to get to the BIOS and start al over again. Initially I thought that this is due to the fact that the memory runs at 667MHz(2x333MHz) when the FSB is set to 266MHz - FSB:DRAM 4:5. I changed it manually to 533MHz (FSB:DRAM 1:1) but the problem did no vanish. I also tried different memory timings set manualy and by SPD but it also failed. At this stage I used up all my ideas and really do not know what to do know. The memory I have is pluged in in slots 1 and 3 for dual channel operation.
I bought this motheroard to get fast and stable system that will not failed during week-long simulations and I'm very dissapointed with what I got so far. Below are my system specs:
    Intel E6300
    MSI P965 Platinum
    Corsair 2x1024 PC 5300 matched
    NorthQ 4001 400W PSU
    Gainward GeForce 7300GT
    WD SATA 250 GB
    NEC DVD-RW AD 7173
    Windows XP Pro SP2
I hope somebody can help me or at least give me a hint where to look for solution.
    Thanks

    Hi all,

the only way I have no problem with this mobo is putting ddr moules in slot 3 and 4 (no dual channel)
