Suddenly Can't see any shared computers

I work on a network with all PCs, except me. We have a file storage computer that is a linux based machine. I have had absolutely no problems seeing these computers on my "shared" list and accessing the file sharing machine, printing to network printers, accessing the internet and email. Suddenly, I do not have a "shared" list, the network is empty, but I can still connect to the network, access the internet and email, and print to network printers. We operate on a wireless network.
I did a software update last week:
Installed "AirPort Extreme Update 2008-004" (1.0)
Installed "iTunes" (8.0.2)
Installed "Migration and DVD ⁄ CD Sharing Update" (1.1)
Installed "QuickTime H.264 Compatibility Update" (7.5.5)
Installed "Security Update 2008-007" (1.0)
Our Network admin did a routine vista update as well. I don't know if others can see me or if that changed because I have kept my machine closed to the public.
I've tried command-k and put in the file sharing machine address and it just gives "connection failed" does not exist, etc.
All my Mac friends are mystified, including the tech at the local Mac store.
Any ideas out there?

WELL...I tried all of this stuff to no avail. I also tried checking the WINS stuff you described below. I don't know if you meant that for my problem, but there was no way it was letting me choose my work group, it listed none and wouldn't remain if I typed it in. BUT...I went to the Security>Firewall in system prefs and changed the setting to "Allow allincoming connections" and restarted and what-do-you-know, my shared was back! I don't know that I like having opened that up, and it is the only one that will bring the shared back. I do have "Stealth Mode" on in the advanced tab, but I don't know if I am vulnerable to unwanted advances on my computer now. I wonder if this is an Apple security update bug? Or am I just doing things all wrong? Can I set the network as an "essential service" or "specific service"?
Anyway, original problem solved. Thanks to all who tried to help! By the way, I can see my workgroup on the WINS thing now.

  • After iTunes 10.3.1, my Apple TV 1st gen. can't see any shared iTunes libraries!

Ok, everything was working fine until iTunes 10.3 came into the scene. Post 10.3 / 10.3.1, my Apple TV 1st gen can't see any shared iTunes libraries...

    Hello everyone
I have fixed it! The problem was that Apple TV had tried to connect to the computer so many times the Virus Barrier X6 had decided it was a malicious attack and blocked the IP address.
I fixed the connection by adding the IP address to a trusted list within the FireWall rules.
To do the same follow these instructions
    Go to Virus Barrier X6.
Click the 'Anti-Vandal' Tab at the top of the screen.
Click 'Blocked Addresses'. Select the IP of Apple TV (you can find this IP address through your router software). Click the '-' sign at the bottom of the left hand column. If the Apple TV IP address isn't listed then you have a different problem!
Click 'Trusted Addresses'. Click the '+' sign at the bottom of the left hand column. Add the IP address of Apple TV in the pop up box, select 'permanent', add any notes you want to and then click 'OK'.
Turn on Apple TV and it should all be working fine (assuming that your 'Home Sharing' setting are all on and you are connected the the network!).
    Hope that helps

  • Suddenly can't see any printers!!!

Help!!! I suddenly can't see either of my printers... a very old LaserWriter 5800, and also a Canon color printer. I'm posting this via my Airport network connection, so that obviously works. I'm also seeing one of two other computers on the network under Shared in the Finder window. The other two devices I'm seeing are the Canon printer's Fiery processor and the Airport base station. I upgraded to Leopard almost immediately, and this only happened today. Any ideas? Thanks very much in advance!!!

Updating the situation (still need help!!!)... I restarted everything network-related (cable modem, firewall, switch, and Airport) and now I can see both printers in the Default and AppleTalk windows of the Print & Fax system preference, but ONLY when I'm hardwired into the network. When accessing through Airport instead of ethernet cable, I can only see Bonjour shared printers on a colleague's machine? Any ideas?? Thanks very much in advance!

  • Can't see any shared devices within my network, only devices that aren't in my network.

One of my students updated to Mavericks. Since then she hasn't been able to see shared devices on our network, most importantly, our Mac server that we use for file storage. We're in a protected wireless network that only people from our department can sign in to. She can however see a couple of dozen computers from outside of our network, but nothing from within ours.
I deleted the entry for our wireless network in the Keychain, thinking that maybe a setting within it got corrupted. Didn't resolve the issue.
    Any ideas?

It's worth double checking the device is on the correct network.
See if the IP address is correct for the network range and you see the correct router etc. Bonjour is a broadcast service, so it doesn't usually cross networks and subnets unless that has been configured to do so.
It could be that another remembered network is being used instead of the protected one.
If you can open Terminal you can try flushing the local cache…
    dscacheutil -flushcache
You can also see if she has 'mdns' records for your server (assuming afp is running) via …
    dns-sd -B _afpovertcp
You will need to hit ctrl+c to exit this tool.
Bonjour Browser is easier to use to see records, but it would need installing.

  • Can't see other sharing computers in network

I have this issue with a Macbook Air running Mountain Lion, that it can't show any other sharing computers in the network except another Macbook when using wireless network. I have the following setting:
    Firewall is off
    SMB file sharing is on
Workgroup is set to WORKGROUP in WINS tab
Location has been saved rather than Automatic
Other computers (that are sharing) can be connected using the tool opened using Cmd+K
Seems to be able to see the other computers some times when connecting using Ethernet
I have relaunched Finder and restarted the laptop, nothing is making the sharing computers show up.
The problem occurs to this laptop only. My laptop, a Macbook Pro running Snow Leopard, have no problem finding these computers in the same wireless setup.

I figured it out awhile back. There was a glitch and when I upgraded to the next version (From when I posted this message), my other hard drive reappeared in the network.

  • Suddenly can't connect to shared computers or screen share

For some reason I can no longer connect to my shared computers. I can however connect to MY computer from my shared computers, if that makes sense.
From my own computer, when I go to my shared list in the finder, I click on a computer (normally it all automatically connects because I have the password remembered), I click "connect as" and I never get any response, sometimes a "connection failed" I know file sharing is enabled on all computers.
Is there a way to refresh my list? What can I do to reconnect to my shared computers? This seems to have been happenings since I last updated the OS.
Also, I can no longer do a screen share where I was doing this regularly every day.
    Thanks

  • IMac suddenly can't see any wireless networks!

I have a recurring problem with my iMac 20" Intel Core Duo.
For some reason, it suddenly loses the ability to see wireless networks. The problem is resolved if I restart. I go through this several times each day, and the frequency of the problem is increasing.
Strangely, there is nothing wrong with my Airport Extreme wireless network. My other computers see it just fine.
And when I check the Airport indicator at the upper right-hand side of my iMac's desktop during this problem, it shows NO wireless networks at all! And I have 7 neighbors with wireless networks on 24/7!
As I said above, the solution has been to restart my computer, at which point all the networks appear again.
Can anyone offer a solution/explanation? I have tinkered with my network settings to no avail.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.
MacBook Pro, iMac 20" Intel Core Duo   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It has to be unrelated because I too have been having the same issue for the past 2 weeks. Actually it seems that ever since I reloaded the last iMac intel update (which I had to do to get my iSight to work again)
I've been having this issue multiple times a day. I even moved my iMac thinking I had too much distance and walls between the router and the iMac.
I know it isn't the router because the laptop in the house picks up a very strong signal all the time.
I tried switching channels on the router (a linksys) and it has seemed to help a bit. I am now down to dropped signals only about every other day.

  • One computer can't see any other iPhoto shared libraries

My Powerbook can't see any other computer's shared iPhoto libraries. However, all my other computers can see its iPhoto library.
All computers are running the same version of iPhoto.
I posted this in the iPhoto forum, but I'm reasonably sure this is a networking problem. Why? If I create another user on my Powerbook, it can see all the other shared libraries. So, the problem exists on only one account on one computer. I think there is a corrupt system setting in that account's ~/Library/ somewhere. Any suggestion which file it is? I've already dragged out likely culprits to no avail.
I have no problem sharing iTunes libraries; that works fine. So do file transfers to and from.
    Here's what else I've done:
Verified iPhoto Preferences is set to "Look for shared photos" and "Share my photos" (obviously).
Tried requiring a password, and not requiring a password
Verified System Preferences > Sharing > Firewall has "iPhoto Bonjour Sharing" checked.
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iPhoto.plist
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iApps.plist
    Deleted ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.digihub.plist
    Turned off Little Snitch
Quit / restarted iPhoto a few times
Logged in / out, rebooted a few times
    Researched iPhoto Help
    Researched the discussion boards
Repaired permissions on both (as you can see, I'm resorting to voodoo tactics)
Dragged my iPhoto Library out of ~/Pictures and created a brand new empty library (more voodoo)
    Googled the problem
    Posted this topic
That's all I can think of to do.
    So... what haven't I done?

If iPhoto works for one user on a computer, it ought to work for all users. So the program itself can't possibly be a problem. Right?
Apparently not. I deleted iPhoto, and reinstalled it. That fixed the problem for the one recalcitrant account.
The problem with voodoo is that sometimes, it works.

  • WIFI on 2504. Users can't see any computers in "My network places".

Hello. I'm using 2504 CISCO controller and three AIR-CAP2602I-R-K9 access points. So I organized simple WIFI network with AES encryption. Users can easily connect to the proper SSID and after put a login have Internet access. But they just can't see any computers or shared folders on servers in "My Network Places". If I connect any workstation by wire I haven't this problem. So the issue appears only during WIFI access to the LAN.
Please advise, what can I change in 2504 settings.
    Thank you.

The WLC doesn't block this unless P2P blocking is enabled. The easiest way to test is to create an open SSID and map that WLAN to an existing wired Vlan. Doesn't tweak the WLAN except for making it wide open. Them associate your wireless client to that new SSID and see if they see the resources.
That is the configuration I was telling you about that you had a screen shot of. As long as that is disabled, you should be able to see the resources.

  • Help - Can't See any of my photos

Hoping that someone can help me - I am really at a loss here.
I am using Lightroom 1.3.1 on a Vista 64 system with 8G RAM. Things had been working fine, but suddenly I cannot see any of my picture, either in the Library module or in the Develop module.
In the Library module, I just see gray boxes for the thumbnails. When I originally open the Lightroom, there are no thumbnails, but when I mouse over them, the gray thumbnails appear. They also appear very disorganized - for example the gray thumbnail box for the "2" frame is upside down and the "2" label is reversed (mirror image). The filestrip view is similar.
If I go to the develop module, all I see is a gray box instead of the picture itself.
I've tried a few things - I deleted the preferences file and recreated it. I verified the integrity of the catalog. I tried creating a new catalog and I tried uninstalling and re-installing Lightroom. Nothing that I have done changes what I see.
Help - I am at a loss as to what to try next!
    Thanks,
    Paul

Well it actually uses the Profile which many another app wont bother to do, so if it is a corrupt profile it reacts differently that other apps.

A different approach would be to:
    1.  Delete the contents of the library on the desktop Window 7 computer;
    2.  Turn off iTunes Match;
    3.  Copy the contents of the Music folder from the working Windows 7 computer to the desktop Music folder;
    4.  Import the new contents of the Desktop music folder into the library;
    5.  Close / restart the iTunes client and confirm that the library has all the Songs as anticipated;
    6.  Turn on the iTunes Match service and allow it to run to completion.
