Suddenly can't send mail, can't receive.
Hi, recently I'm suddenly unable to receive email. I'm able to send however.
I set up the mail account 3 months ago and it's been working fine up until now, and I haven't changed any of the Mail Preference settings.
I keep getting this error message:
"The server refused to allow a connection on port 143"
I'm able to check mail directly on the mail server on Firefox,so it's not a server issue-the Mail application just doesn't work.
I am also having the same problem as of 1 day ago. I can send but not receive mail, but I can retrieve my mail through the Apple server site. I recently installed Leopard. Any thoughts?

How can I receive Mai ?
Your are asking two different and opposite the questions.
If you can't send mail .... Check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional. -
Can not send mail, but do receive mail at a different location
I am on my way to college now and while staying at a hotel I can connect to the internet using the hotel high speed wired connection at the room. When I try sending mail using my MacBookPro mail application, I can not send any mail, but can however receive email. It keeps giving me error messages regarding the server for outgoing mail.
Mail Help has some articles devoted to sending problems, e.g. I can't send email or I can't send email because the connection to the server on port 25 timed out. You may want to take a look at them in case there is something there that applies to you.

Can't send mail, *can* receive
I've set up my email account on my brand-new Touch (3.1.1) so many times now that I'm going crazy. I can successfully receive mail, but no matter what I try, I can't send. The message I get is, :Cannot Send Mail. The sender address was invalid." I'm setting up a POP account and am at my wits' end.
Does anyone have any hints? Thanks!Look at THIS DEMO and see if you can find something that might help.
I have no way to test this as it's not something I have, but it should point you to being able to setting up an iPod/iPhone.
Sorry I can't offer more, but I bet it's pretty simple - just a matter of putting in the right info.
Compare with what you have in Mail.
Good luck,

Can't send mail, but still receive it, why?
I can no longer send mail from my computer, but I can still receive it. What is going on? This happened to my laptop first, but then seemed to just cure itself. with np intervention. Is this possibly the result of iCloud being hacked as reported in the papers? I would most appreciate any help in correcting this situation. (I've already run Disk Utility, repaired permissions and rebuilt the directory with DiskWarrior - - but these did not fix the problem.

Hi there tamarafromdarien,
You may find the troubleshooting steps for iCloud Mail in the article below helpful.
iCloud: Troubleshooting iCloud Mail
If you can't send mail in OS X Mail
If you receive this alert or a similar alert when sending a message from your iCloud email address in OS X Mail:
“This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The reason for the failure is: An error occurred while delivering this message via the smtp server: server name.”
In OS X Mail, choose Preferences from the Mail menu.
Click Accounts in the Preferences window.
Select your iCloud account from the list of accounts.
Click the Account Information tab.
Choose your iCloud account from the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) pop-up menu. Example: “Derrick Parker (iCloud)”.
Note: The Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) menu also includes an Edit SMTP Server List command. If you choose this command, be aware that the iCloud SMTP server won't be among the servers that can be edited. This is normal.
If you're attaching a large file
Message attachments can't exceed the maximum size allowed by your email service provider or the recipient's email service provider. The maximum size varies by service provider. Try compressing the filebefore sending it, or send your message without the attachment to verify that there are no issues with sending.

I have often received the alert box that the selected server can not send the mail and I have to change the server,or wait, or restart mail to get it to work. This is annoying, but I have dealt with it (although I'd like to know what's going on). But, now, it seems I can't send mail at all, from any server, with a restart or otherwise. It's been happening for the last day.
Can anyone lend a hand? Is it a problem with Apple? I've chosen a variety of different servers (I have many e-mail accounts set up). I've relaunched. Tried to send from various e-mail addresses (although my .mac is my default). No luck.
Thanks for the help,
J.We have the same problem here and for a few weeks we've resorted to signing in to a browser email program as mac mail's password isn't recognized by the server.

I can receive mail on my mac account, but I can't send mail. What should I do?
I can receive mail on my mac account, but I can't send mail. What should I do?
Hello, sounds like you haven't switched to iCloud yet, the old dot Mac & MobileMe servers are going away or gone for most already.
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
• Server name: imap.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 993
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password
SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
• Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
• SSL Required: Yes
• Port: 587
• SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
• Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
• Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria: 8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers. If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message. Go to http://appleid.apple.com then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
Thanks to dpepper...

I can't send mails from my outlook 2010 but can receive, please help.
Thank you so much for your time and help Csound1 I really appreciate it.
Mac mail works perfectly fine so I don't want to screw it up by altering anything there.
However, I've checked to make sure I didn't miss anything on Outlook, but it still won't send messages. I don't know if I need to fill the "Unqualified domain" field? -
Receiving mail fine, but can't send mail
For some reason, my outgoing mail servers are all showing offline. I can receive mail fine. I have my own domain names, and they are all housed on the same host. My boss has one of the same domains and he can send and receive mail fine. I can receive mail, but can't send mail out unless I use my gmail server to send. All my other domains are showing offline on the outgoing. How do I get them back online, and is this a Macmail problem (my boss uses Entourage), or is it a problem with my Qwest DSL? I don't know where to start.
I did call the place where our domains are hosted and all is OK there.
Thanks,
CaroleProblem - Cannot send eMail - pop up box says smtp server needs password - if password used this is not recognised.
Solution - Go to Mail>preferences choose Accounts, select one of the accounts.
Look at 'outgoing mail' server, shows ' smtp.(name of server.com) (offline)' then click on it and choose 'edit smtp server list' - the box will show description - '(name of server)', server name - 'smtpmail.(server name.com)' and in use by account - '(account name)'
press the '-' button and the above details will disappear.
Press '+' button and type in 'smtpmail.(server name).com' in the server name box - if you are prompted to save changes, click 'OK' - this may only happen when changing the first account ..
All should now be OK and you can now check if eMail can be sent..
Open an 'unsent eMail' in the Outbox by double clicking on it and clicking 'send' it should be sent.

Suddenly can't send mail with Comcast.
Just thought I'd add my experience to the chorus. Use Mail on a G4 PB running latest version of Tiger with Comcast as ISP. Few days ago kept getting the message that port 25 timed out. I questioned Comcast, and got a standard reply to try port 587, which I did, and which works. I can now send mail through port 587.
Question though: Is this a Comcast problem, or an Apple Mail problem. It seems like it cannot be a coincidence that "can't send mail" seems to be a hot topic all of a sudden, and that it involves various ISP's and platforms. I haven't heard the word "virus" mentioned. In my mind, it's a silly attempt by ISPs to limit/cut off SPAM, not that that is a silly idea in and of itself, but changing the Port number isn't going to last very long, add to that not notifying Users/Paying customers before hand is negligent if not criminal!
The Spammers probably knew and adjusted to the change before the first Customer figured it out. -

Receiving mail, but can't send mail with attachments?
Hello,
I can't send mails anymore, I have been able to send some without any attachments (i.e. reply doesn't work as it automatically attaches the original text). This started 3 days ago. Also, my mail doesn't seem to recognize powerpoint and word docs., but I a know the people who have send me such files do not have VISTA. When I choose "open with" then it works. So I have 2 problems, one being moe urgent then the other.
1) can't send mail with attachments
2) .doc (word), .pps (powerpoint)attachments are not always recognized.
thank you all!!!Try going into Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars > select the account > account name , tap on SMTP (under the 'Outgoing Mail Server' heading) and then tap on your Primary Server and try entering your email account and password and see if it then works

I am suddenly having trouble sending mail. I've checked my settings through ATT, they are correct and used their connection assistant which comes up as a green light. I'm receiving mail but just can't send it. They suggest delting the account online, but then I would lose everything.
I have one main account and 3 sub-accounts, same problem with all of them. I have also run disc repair and the iMail troubleshooter and tried re-installing mail, but my iMac won't let me.
I have an iMac bought in 2007 with intel, running Snow Leopard and 3 Gigs RAM.I have an error that says it can't connect to port 537 TSL because it's an ssl. I have ssl selected. It happens with replyies as well as new messages.
This is a copy of the connection doctor detail:
