Suddenly cannot set a Desktop Pattern on PBG4 - 10.5.8

After over 6 years with my PowerBook G4 (which today serves as a great backup Mac that has saved me twice when my MBP-13" (mid-2010) motherboard has gone down and needed replacement!)--- SUDDENLY I cannot set a Desktop Pattern - it is just white.
The patterns / images are there and they show in the System Preferences "Desktop/ScreenSaver" -- and the images in the respective folders are valid ones…
I repaired the HD - it took hours but this morning reported OK - and I will repair permissions (this seems to be running for a long time now…)
Everything else seems to work fine-- and up until a few days ago I could set the "wallpaper" or "Desktop Pattern" of my choice.
A few days ago I did connect my PBG4 to a TV for watching QuickTime movies via an adapter - and used screen mirroring and QT7 pro which all worked great - it seems it might be at that time that I started having the problem setting the Desktop Pattern (i.e. when I could no longer set it!)

More information on this mystery:
1. With an external TV via red-yellow-white cables with external TV adapter -- when set for NOT-mirrored, I can set a desktop pattern on the TV, but not see one on the PBG4.
2. When I hit F9 - the white desktop pattern moves away, revealing the desktop pattern I have set, but somewhat hazy - i.e. not fully clear.
3. When I do a restart --- after everything else is gone, for a few seconds the desktop pattern I set (and this can be any) shows---
Very perplexing-- Again, I did a full REPAIR DISK and REPAIR PERMISSIONS - that has not helped.

Cannot use Remote Desktop host on Windows 8.1 Pro, termsrv corrupted?

Hello,
Few days ago I upgraded my home desktop machine from Windows 8.1 to Windows 8.1 Professional so I can use the Remote Desktop feature.
I enabled everything needed, checked "Allow computers to connect to this computer" from the Remote Settings, forwarded the port 3389 in my rounter and allowed it in my firewall etc...
But I still can't connect to this computer from outside my home network or inside it. The error I get trying to connect is this:

Since it's the first time I use this tool I'm not familiar with this log file, but what I managed to figure out from it is that termsrv.dll is corrupted and windows cannot repair it for some reason.
My question is:
How can I repair this file? Is this even the problem preventing me from connecting to this computer via Remote Desktop?

managed to figure out from it is that termsrv.dll is corrupted and windows cannot repair it for some reason.
So, the next step supposedly is
using DISM.
Coincidentally I reached that page last night from
this one, which I thought gave me a better awareness of how much manual repair might be possible. E.g. maybe the WinSxS isn't quite as fragile as we are being led to believe? (It's making me feel sort of like how I used to feel about the
registry when seeing all the caveats about using RegEdit before I got used to that tool.)

Something else that I became aware of yesterday serendipitously is SxStrace.exe. I have never seen it used but it sounds useful. E.g. perhaps easier to interpret for supplemental clues than the ProcMon trace that I usually advocate.
Or perhaps use both and see in ProcMon when the SxStrace is writing. E.g. filter with Operation Is WriteFile.
However, what I would do first is find out what the state of your system is regarding that module. E.g. try this Powershell pipeline to list what you have.

Note that I am giving you the whole command line, including prompt to show where the command should be started from.
C.f. another thread where doing the same diagnostic procedure seems to be finding more a problem with the Windows Update software than with the user's WinSxS cache.

Yes it sounds like you have a corrupted preference file.
The setting you make in individual programs get saved to a Preference file in your Users/Library/Preferences folder.
All you have to do is drag out the old file to the desktop, reboot and load the program and the preference file gets rebuilt without your preferences which you reset.
For your case I beleive the preference file is
com.apple.desktop.plist

OK, that's pretty plain vanilla. Assuming you've already checked the Adobe
Updates web page to ensure that both applications are fully patched....
The thing that jumps out from your procedure is that you don't seem to have
the Acrobat printer set as the system default because you're selecting it.
So I'd make that change. And you may want to then reboot, to make sure it
sticks.
The second thing I'd do is eliminate your Step 1, because if you don't
select Print To File and do that dance, if the Acrobat Printer is selected
(as it should be if it's the system default), Acrobat will create the PS
file and distill it automatically, then delete the temp files -- that's
what it's designed to do. (This would also make Step 2 and 3 unnecessary,
because Acrobat is your system default printer now.)
Probably no harm in forcing it into manual mode as you're doing, except the
extra time and keystrokes, but I'd try the other path just to see what
happens.

Cannot sync between desktop and Pearl

I have set up the sync between my laptop and phone, but I cannot set it up with my desktop computer at work. Desktop manager won't let me set up sync preferences. thanks

Am useing a PC. Have Photoshop CS5, suddenly cannot move Raw files from bridge (or anywhere else) into photoshop. Jpeg move into photoshop ok, did get error message 1 what do I do to correct this om bridge (or anywhere else for that matter)

Sorry for the late reply. My email firewall has become a little over zealous & sent a lot of my emails straight to my junk email folder, so I have only just now discovered your reply in my junk mail folder.
The only "don't open files exceeding xxx megabytes" instruction I can find in my Prefs, is in the Bridge Prefs for Thumbnails, & mine is set at 1000mb. The biggest files I handle are bigger than 200mb so I should be able to open a few, not just one.
However, this doesn't explain why I can open a psd format file of 180mb, close it, but then can't open a RAW format file of only 26mb immediately after.
I can open the RAW file only if I restart my computer - very annoying!
However, thanks for the advice about the video card & memory.

Cannot set up my email accounts, keep saying "username or password" is not correct, please help!!!!!!!!

I have been using THUNDERBIRD for more than 10 years, changed and installed into many desktops and laptops. But this time, after I installed in my new desktop WIN8, I cannot set up any of my IMAP accounts. They are not gmail/yahoo. They are my business emails. But the settings I have been using is the same and not changed, tried uninstall, reinstall, I'm copying the exact settings that I have on my laptop (which is working perfectly fine). It kept saying "username or password is wrong"!!! My username is the full email address which I put it correctly. The port is the same port I used on the other computers. I just don't understand why is this happening...my laptop is using WIN8 as well...
I can install and use with MAILBIRD, so the setting are all correct. But I just can't set any of my 5 accounts (same domain) up on this THUNDERBIRD this time...it's really frustrating.

I interesting note:
MAILBIRD uses port 993 for incoming mail but THUNDERBIRD uses port 143
When uses 143, it kept " checking capabilities...."
then I changed to port 993 (like in MAILBIRD), it said "connected to.....mail," but then "timed out"

im in Indoenesia, using Telkomsel service provider and using wifi (5mb connection with 400 kbps pure download speed) while trying to restore this boody BBM contacts

I had this problem. I checked all settings and they were correct. Purely by chance I changed the setting to recieve emails from manually to every fifteen minutes. This generated a request for my apple ID and I began to receive my emails again. Hope this helps.

Wrt54g v3 network suddenly cannot ping/traceroute

I have a wireless network set up that has been up and running w/out problems for several years. After installing skype on a new machine (but one that had been successfully using my wireless network for 1+ week), I suddenly cannot resolve hosts.
Here are the details:
1) wrt54g v3 w/ latest firmware
2) secure network, non-broadcasting
3) been working for years
4) 2 different laptops on the network: both running windows XP & successfully using the network for some time
5) I just installed skype on the newer laptop & suddenly lost internet access
6) I can connect to the router and ping & traceroute successfully using the diagnostics tools on the router.
7) When trying to ping/traceroute the same addresses from the laptop, I cannot find the hosts.
8) The other laptop that I have not touched is experiencing the same problems.
9) I have power cycled everything (modem, router, laptops) multiple times to no avail.
Any help would be appreciated.

Well , you can try to reset the router and reconfigure it ..
1. Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds.
2. Then, unplug the power keep holding down the reset button for
another 30 Seconds.
3. Plug back the power back in, and keep holding down the reset button
for 30 Seconds.
4. Release the reset button.

In linux, saving a background image (set as Desktop)feature doesnt download my image to wallpaper folder..or even to standard "Save download" feature. Can I tell firefox where (what folder) to save my "Set as Desktop" picture?

When I find a suitable picture to use as wallpaper" I often right click and use the menu item "Set as Desktop Background". The file ""example.jpg" is saved in directory\folder "/home/user" rather than for example "/home/user/my wallpaper" or in the directory
"/home/user/Downloads". The latter as being set under the "Downloads" section on the "General" tab in the "Preferences" dialog box.
Is there a configuration file where I can change the default location to save my "Set as Desktop Background" images. Or better still can the menu be customized to launch the application that allows me to set my desktop wallpapers?
I am using the "PCLinuxOS" Linux OS but I have encountered this issue in many if not all the Linux distributions I have sampled.

Don't use "Set as Desktop". Use ''' "Save Image As..." ''' instead, and file it with your other "wallpaper" images so the operating system has access to those images.
IIRC, Firefox saves a "desktop image" to the Profile folder, and it will only save one image, at that. Change the image and the previous one is gone.

1. In Paragraph Designer, for Tab Stops, click Edit. Edit Tab Stop dialog box opens, and the Paragraph Designer dialog box closes.
2. Type value in New Position box.
3. Click Continue. The Edit Tab Stop box closes.
4. Open Paragraph Designer. No tabs are recorded.
Discussion of a similar problem occured on this forum in June 2010. At that time, the resolution seemed to be to upgrade to 9.0.3. Has anyone else encountered this problem with these versions?

How do I set the desktop wallpaper with an image in aperture 3?

Sorry for the silly question, but I can't find how to set my desktop wallpaper with an image in aperture 3. It was simple when using Iphoto, but I can't find the method in aperture.

Command(⌘)-9 is no longer listed in the list of default keyword shortcuts, and it has no effect.
I wrote a little Automator service to bring the Command(⌘)-9 back.
A copy of this service is here for download:

This service uses three actions:
Aperture: Get selected images
Export Masters
Finder: Set the Desktop Picture
To install it, open the workflow in Automator and save it as service.
To use it, select any image in Aperture, then activate the service from the Aperture menu -> Services, and it will set the master of the selected image as Desktop picture.
If you like, you can assign the Command(⌘)-9 key to the service (in the System Preferences -> Keyboard -> Keyboard Shortcuts Panel) and then turn any image you selected into Desktop wallpaper by simply pressing (⌘)-9.
@Frank Caggiano, if you are still following this thread: for some reason this workflow succeeds with exporting the master, but I could not get it to work with the versions instead. Any ideas?
Caution: this service will clutter the Desktop with the exported images. If you want to avoid that, change the export action to export the image to a different folder.
