Suddenly extremely slow Time Machine backups on Time Capsule

My Time Machine backups on Time Capsule have been pretty good in the last few months. In the last week or so I am seeing painfully slow backups. It's not the preparing or the finishing phase, it's the backup itself. Data transfer for other apps is fine. The backup transfers about 50 Kb per second. In more than 3 hours it backed up about 600 Mb. Here's what I get from the Console:

Any clue? What happened? (I did an Airport-related upgrade recently)
My set up is a Time Capsule and an Airport Extreme.

Well, this link has a video describing a downgrade:
http://www.mefeedia.com/entry/airport-extreme-and-time-capsule-firmware-downgrad ing/11537477/
It has been mentioned in apple discussions here as well, but with no other information than that it has helped some people.

It must have found the old backup corrupt.. so you will more than likely have little choice. You can archive off the old backup if it is still useful.
You can also verify it. See A5 http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html
He also has some info on this problem. eg C13.

Time Machine backup to Time Capsule stopped ... and seemingly endlessly keeps on preparing for the next backup. Did anyone encounter this problem too? Thanks! Daniel

• Why Migration or Restore Utility doesn't find any Time Machine backups from Time Capsule ?

Hello,
After a big issue on my system (Lion), I had to do a full restore from Time Capsule and my problems started.
Here is my setup:
Time Capsule configured with account-based authentication
MacBook with OS X Lion (x2) (1 needs a restore)
I booted from Lion's restoration partitions, then I selected "Restore from Time Machine backup", my Time Capsule is detected. I hit "Continue", the utility asks my login/password. Then...nothing ! It seems that no backup is detected.
Well, from another computer, I tried to connect with the same login/password and mount the sparsebundle backup...no problems
To go further, I launched Migration utility from the working computer, then tried to restore from Time Machine backups....no backup is detected again !
Solution:
I had, from Lion's restoration partition, to mount the Time Capsule drive, then the sparsebundle image (the backup) from Terminal.
After that, the restoration utility was able to detect the "local" mounted sparsebundle backup image.
Aftermath:
Not a single Apple utility, designed to restore my computer, was able to detect my Time Capsule's backups.
I was able to use the command line utility to be able to restore my computer.
Question:
Did I miss something ? Am I the only one to do that to restore from a Time Capsule configured with account authentication ?

I'm sorry I didn't get your point. I didn't find any answer in this FAQ.
For the record, I checked my backups with Disk Utility, no damages were found, so it should work out of the box.

• Restoring Time Machine backup from Time Capsule.  Very slow times solved

For me at least . .
Like many people it seems, I have had enormous problems trying to restore data using Time Machine on a Time Capsule. The data had been backed up fine. The problem was the time for restore which initially was projected at 125 hours for 235GB. Reality suggested that (after 24 hours) this estimate was going to be about right and clearly unacceptable.
I cancelled the backup and read as much as I could across bulleting boards.
The main impression was of a howl of frustration from the many people who had experienced the same problem.
The collected actions below were assembled from many threads and ultimately ended in success. I hope they help.
My initial setup was as follows:
PowerMac G5 Power PC (2005) with 8GB DDR SDRAM (1000BaseT Ethernet connector). Mac OSX 10.5.8
1TB Time Capsule on Ethernet network via a 100BaseT Hub.
I was restoring to a 1TB USB 2.0 Seagate External Desktop Drive (ST3100005EXD101-RK) attached via a USB Hub to the G5.
Having read some threads, I did all of the following:
• I brought the TC into my home office and connected it directly to the Ethernet Port of the G5 to allow the most direct connection from TC to G5
• As suggested in one thread, I replaced the Cat5 ethernet cable I was using with a Cat5e cable (Cat6 is better) to allow 1000BaseT connection to the G5.
• I turned off Time Machine backups and MobileMe Sync.
• I terminated all unnecessary applications the computer
I restarted the restore and the result was the same.
I read more widely and then did the following:
• I reformatted the Seagate target drive using GUID and Mac OS Extended (Journaled). (Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility>choose top level of target drive>Partition>choose number of partitions under Volume Scheme (1 for me)>Options (button under partition window)>GUID Partition Table>Apply and wait quite a while. I had originally had it as Apple Partition Map and GUID was recommended on one particular thread.
• I plugged the target USB drive directly into the USB port on the front of the G5 to eliminate the hub as a potential cause of the slow data transfer.
• Readings suggested that Spotlight might be trying to index one or both of the TC and the target drive. To prevent this the author suggested adding the TC unit and the target drive to the Privacy tab of Spotlight (System Preferences>Spotlight>Privacy. Click + at bottom of window and navigate to target drive/s to add). Activity monitor showed as much data being sent as received so this seemed a likely contributor to the problem. I added both drives as described.
• Somewhere it was mentioned that IPv6 might be causing the problem. I turned it off (System Settings>Network>Built-In Ethernet>Advanced (bottom right of window)>choose “Off” in Configure IPv6 drop box.
• I unplugged the Internet connection from the TC to ensure no chance of this being a factor.
• My G5 doesn’t have an Airport but if you do you should also turn this off. You want to be quite certain that there are no connections that either the computer or the airport can channel data through other than the Ethernet cable.
• I don’t have anti virus software but this should also be turned off as it seems this was slowing down data transfer for many people.
• I shut down the G5, the USB target drive and the TC and restarted them all. After start up, I once again shut down all unnecessary programmes.
I restarted the Restore and, after the customary long wait as it added up all the files to transfer, it announced that the restore would take 4 hours (as opposed to the five days it had suggested previously).
Activity Monitor now shows data transfer rates of 17mb – 18mb per second and it looks like 4 hours is going to be about right. It also shows large amounts of data being received but now with negligible amounts being sent.
I’m afraid I don’t know which of the above is the bit that solved the problem. It could be a combination but I believe that if you do all the above, your restores / backups will all go at an acceptable speed.
A last note to thank all those individuals whose wise words I scoured for these instructions. I hope their collected suggestions are of some use to others.

The migration assistant or the original backup?
I tried WiFi, Ethernet and on the second attempt with a fresh backup on a USB drive.

• Transfer old time machine backup to time capsule

I've just bought a new Time Capsule.
I have Time Machine backups for two MacBook Pro computers - one on a direct-connected USB drive, and the other on a drive connected to the AirPort Extreme USB port.
What's the best way to transfer these backups to my new Time Capsule?
Walt

The methods are described here.
http://pondini.org/TM/18.html
Pesonally I think it better to start over and retain the old devices for 6months or so as archive.. then if you have never needed them you can scrub and reuse them.

• Initial Time machine backup to Time capsule results in kernel panic

I recently purchased a Retina display MacBook Pro (running Lion at the time) and transferred the data from an external hard drive with my Time Machine backups from my previous MBP. I also bought a new Time Capsule.
The first time I tried to back up to the Time Capsule from the Retina MBP via an ethernet connection it got to 40GB of 140GB before it shut down from a kernel panic. Interestingly, the Time Machine backup was successful when I used the external hard drive I was previously using for my Time Machine backups (connected via USB).
I don't think there is an issue with the Time Capsule because Finder can locate the Time Capsule and I can copy and paste files from the Macintosh HD to the Time Capsule disk.
I've done the following steps in order to try and fix the problem:
1. Repair permissions
2. Verify and Repair Macintosh HD
3. Updated the operating system to Mountain Lion (at which point I successfully completed a Time Machine backup to the external hard drive I was using for Time machine backups but was unable to backup to the Time Capsule without the computer crashing from a kernel panic)
4. Used Airport Utility to erase the sparse disk image bundle that had been created on the Time Capsule then tried to back up via ethernet to the time capsule - kernel panic ensued at 40GB of 140GB
5. Used Disk Utility to erase Macintosh HD and re-installed Mountain Lion. Transferred data from the external hard drive Time Machine backup from step 3.
6. Erased the sparse disk image bundle on the Time Capsule again.
7. Tried to backup to the Time Capsule again via Ethernet - kernel panic.
For each of the attemtps to back up to the Time Capsule I've used a different ethernet cable (Cat 5 and 5e) and plugged it into a different ethernet port on the Time Capsule each time. I've also tried using both Thunderbolt ports on the MBP (with an Ethernet to Thunderbolt adaptor).
I'm out of ideas on how to trouble shoot this problem and would greatly appreciate any ideas!!
If anyone knows how to read error logs, here's the readout from one of the kernic panics:

Any or all of the following third-party system modifications may be contributing to your problem:
LaCie drive software
VirusBarrier
I suggest you uninstall them according to the developers' instructions, reboot, and see whether there's any improvement. If there is, you can experiment with putting them back, one at a time, to identify which one is at fault. "VirusBarrier" is harmful and should not be reinstalled in any case.
If there's no improvement after making the suggested changes, post again.

• Initial Time Machine Backup with Time Capsule

Hello,
I just started to back everything up with Time Capsule and Time Machine. The backup is 45 GB so it's going to take a while. Two questions:
1. There is a Volume created on my Desktop called "Backup of [My Computer Name]". Is this supposed to happen?
2. In the actual drive, there is a Sparse file, not the usual backups.backupdb folder that is created when attaching a drive via USB. Is this supposed to be like that as well?
Thanks!

Thank you for the response. I have a couple more questions.
1. Is there a way to manually go through the files? I used to be able to when it was backing up locally through USB.
2. If I change the folder name of the location of the Time Machine backups, do I have to start my backups all over again?
Thanks!

• Time Machine backup of Time Capsule files

Does anybody know if there is a way to have Time Machine backup files stored on a Time Capsule?
ken

deh2k - thanks very much - I didn't know about this; It would be nice to have Time Machine see TC drives for a more automated solution. But this Archive to USB is something I can use until that time...
Not ideal, but something --- thanks again...

• Time Machine Backup - 1st time very long?

Iv'e finally decided to use this app - bought an external drive, and started time machine backup. I have 3 internal drives with over 400 GB total info to back up and it's been going for almost 24 hours so far, and the file on the drive is 100 GB or so. Is this normal? At this rate the backup could end up taking another 2 days. That seems like an awfully long time! Any comments on this would be helpful.
Thanks!

OK, thanks for the input again. All subsequent backups have been recorded as successful by the way…
Here's the log from the first one that gave the "Unknown" status:

• Moving Time Machine backups from Time Capsule to External USB Drive

Hi all,
hoping someone out there can help I'm trying to move my time machine backups from my old Time Capsule to my external USB drive. I've already used the Airport Utility to "archive" my Time Capsule to a USB connected WD MyBook Elite.
Right now my WD MyBook Elite has both the archive, and recent (roughly 5 backups) of both my MacBook & MacMini. I've tried to follow the seemingly simple steps located in the FAQ's here Copy NETWORK backups to be used LOCALLY , but I cannot past step 1.
Right-click the new volume on your desktop or Finder sidebar and select Get Info. If the Ignore ownership on this volume box is checked, click the padlock at the lower right and enter your Admin password at the prompt. Then remove the check mark from the box and close the window.
There is no option to "Ignore Ownership" in Snow Leopard for the Spars Bundle or when expanding it to see its folders.
Any advice?
I'm basically trying to combine my backups to unit them into one seemless backup each for:
Mac Mini & MacBook.
Thank you in advance.

That's not referring to the sparse bundle you're copying FROM, but the new volume you just formatted on the USB drive you're copying TO.
If you didn't just format the partition, that box may not be shown -- it not, there's no problem and you don't need to do anything in that step.

I'm not sure what you mean by that: you cannot combine the backups of two different Macs. You can put them both on the same hard drive, either in two different partitions, or, if any are going to be backed-up over a network, in a sparse bundle.
If I've misunderstood, please clarify exactly what you're trying to do.

• Moving Time Machine Backup to Time Capsule

I just bought a 1tb refurbished TC and am trying to figure out how to move my backup files from my FireWire TimeMachine drive to my new TimeCapsule drive. I haven't done any backups to the TC yet, and would like to be able to use the FireWire drive for other things, so long as I have the backups on the TC. A Specialist at the Apple Store said he thought I could just drag the files over and it would just work.
The TC shows up as a Shared hard drive but my old FireWire drive is still on the network. And I haven't changed my TimeMachine preferences to use the new drive yet.
Any thoughts?

Welcome to the discussions, JohnKerr48!
A Specialist at the Apple Store said he thought I could just drag the files over and it would just work.
A Specialist really should know better. Instead of an honest, "I don't know", he guessed, and guessed wrong. You might want to ask for a different Specialist on your next visit to the Apple store.
Actually, you could just drag the files over....but it would not just work. Time Machine stores files differently on a drive that is directly attached to a Mac compared to the way it stores files on a shared network drive. The formats are not compatible.
If you move the files from the Firewire drive to the Time Capsule, you won't be able to access them using Time Machine. If you need them, you'll have to move them back to an external drive and attach that drive directly to your computer if you want to access the Time Machine backup files. Doesn't make much sense.
When you activate Time Machine backups to the Time Capsule, Time Machine is going to make a backup of everything on your Mac on the first pass and then do incremental backups from that point forward.
My suggestion would be to leave your current Time Machine backup files exactly where they are...on your Firewire drive. Once you get 3-6 months worth of fresh backups on the Time Capsule, you may likely decide that you really don't need all the old backups on the Firewire drive. At that point, you could delete them to free up space on the FireWire drive.

• Time Machine backup to Time Capsule clobbers wireless network

Dear All,
When TimeMachine starts a backup to my new Time Capsule, the wireless network gets clobbered. Other computers on the network's throughput to external sites goes to basically zero (slow ping times, dropped packets- basically unusable.) Is this the expected behavior?
The configuration I have for my home network is
cable modem -> time capsule serving wireless network -> "g" network with 2-3 laptops (macbook pro and dell windows laptops.) The dells can't do anything when Time Machine runs, and since it runs hourly it is a bit irritating. I'm considering getting another Mac and then the downtime of my network would increase even more....
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers
Peter

My old G5 has 802.11b, and back ups to TC are SLOW. But then the "wire speed" of g is 11M bits/s or ~1 MB/s, but in the real world if you got 100KB/s that's probably good. 100KB/s is only 6 MB/min or .36 GB/hr.
So 2GB/.36GB which is 5.6 hrs.
Or to put it another way that's about 3 GB/hr at very best.
And that's ignoring stuff like compression!
in short: not usable with 802.11g
===
On my Mac Pro with 802.11n (54 Mbs) I get about 8x that because "n" is about 5x faster wire speed and seems to have better "software".
e.g. I get about about 25 GB/hr on my ".11n" system
Still way slow but at least useable.
===
Moral of the story don't bother which TC if you don't have "n"

• Time to create initial time machine backup on time capsule

I am using a Time Capsule for my wifi service. Am attempting to use it for Time Machine for an iMac that has (with attached hard drives) ~ 268GB of stuff to back up. Time Machine says it will take 5 days. It never makes it past two before the computer crashes. Any ideas?

Things will go much much faster if you connect the iMac directly to the TIme Capsule using an Ethernet connection.
Connect from the iMac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the Time Capsule. Turn off wireless to insure that the wired connection will be used.
On average, about 30 GB per hour will transfer using Ethernet, so this should take about 9-10 hours or so.
Once the first backup is done, you can switch back to wireless since the incremental backups should only take a few minutes each hour.

• Time Machine backup on Time Capsule - lost

Hi,
I changed the password on my 1 TB Time Capsule, as well as the WPA personal password. I then realized later on that Time Machine no longer connected to the MacBook Pro backup on my TC. I saw a support article about changing the password in Keychain Access so that TM would be able to access the backup on TC. I made the necessary changes (I think). I tried to set up TM to connect back to the already 2+ year old backup, but I am not able to. What can be done?
Thanks

Did anything on your Mac change recently, such as the main logic board or disk drive?  In either of these cases Time Machine will want to start backups over again.
If Time Machine didn't offer to let you use the old backup set, I'm not sure there's much you can do.  It's possible there's help in either of these, but I'm not optimistic:
