Suddenly have a lot of free space?

I just synced my iphone to itunes, and all of the sudden I have nearly 5gb of free space!   Up until recently, my phone was always on the verge of being full and the bar at the bottom of itunes confirmed that it was all music, photos, etc. only the tiniest bit was marked "other". I have only deleted just a few things recently, but definitely not 5gb worth!  I would know. that's a lot of stuff-- I'd really have to work at it to find 5gb worth of music, etc, that I'd be willing to delete from itunes.
Also, I have synced my phone many times in the past year, and itunes always indicated that my phone was nearly full. The only thing I did differently with today's sync was to tell it to manually backup my phone onto my computer. Then I backed up my downloaded podcasts.
At a glance, it seems like all photos, podcasts, videos, music, etc are still on my phone. so why is so much space freed up all of the sudden?   is it possible my phone full of corrupted data and this particular backup and sync suddenly cleared it?

I haven't recently deleted any apps. In fact, this sync accidentally restored a couple of apps that I had deleted from my iphone.  They were really small.
I guess it's just a glitch! I wanted to see if this had happened to anyone else. it makes me angry because:
A: now I'm nervous that something is missing and I'll figure it out way later when it's too late.
B: for the last few months, I slaved over deleting things in order to keep my phone freed up. I thought I was putting too much music, etc on it and it turns out I might have had tons of free space and didn't know it.

  • I have a lot of free space on my HD, but Disk utility won't let me add the free space to Macintosh HD

I recently deleted a few partitions (Linux) after removing them, I was left with a lot of freespace. Everytime I try to add it to Macintosh HD, it gives me a prompt saying it can't. Is there anything I can do?

This wouldbe my approach (above).  Cor clarity:
    1. make a full, bootable clone on an external drive
    2. boot from external drive, partition and format internal HD
    3. clone back

  • Sudden loss of hard drive free space

Within a day I suddenly lost about 18GB of free space on my hard drive.  About a week ago I noticed that I had only 5% free space on my 90+GB hard drive.  I deleted, moved programs and files and finally got it up to 22%.  Then a day or so later it was down to 3%, without my doing anything unusual. I then removed more files and got it up to 6%.  But something is wrong.  I've run the degragmenter, disk cleanup, removed temp files by running %temp% and deleting the files that came up.  I have searched for all files larger than 1GB, but found nothing.  My ZoneAlarm AV and spyware scans have turned up nothing.  I haven't searched system files as I don't know how to do that.  I ran RegCure--no new space from that operation.  I'm running out of things to do short of restoring back to an earlier time using a Ghost backup on an external drive--and that's not a guaranteed cure because I am not sure when this problem started.
I am running Windows XP Pro.  BTW, when I reboot, the free space remains about the same.

    Mainefrye, welcome to the forum,
this / similar has been experienced by several members, searching for "drive space" without the "" should bring results. Here's an example with a possible solution.
    Hope this helps

  • I have 150 gb of free space on HD, yet says no space available. Help?

I was downloading music recently and triedto import it into ITunes when a message popped up stating something like, "will copy as much as possible. No more space on ------ HD available".
At the same time, Dropbox was not letting me upload music to it even though I had over 50% of space available.
And when I tried to unzip a file, it was cancelled due to "no more space for extraction".
This is all happening even though I have 151 GB of free space!
I am not sure why this is happening and would appreciate any input.
    Thanks

    dave0915,
iTunes stores your iPhone backups in the Library folder in your Home folder.
iTunes places the backup files in these places:
    Mac: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup/

  • I am trying to purchase os x lion from app store. Getting a response saying I need 2GB memory available but I have at least 40GB free space??

I am trying to purchase os x lion from app store. Getting a response saying I need 2GB memory available but I have at least 40GB free space??

Memory = Ram, the 40G free space you are referring to is hard drive storage space available, 2 very different things.
In order to run Lion you MUST have at least a Core 2 Duo processor and 2G of Ram, to find out whether you qualify (and it seems as though you don't) go to
Apple>About this Mac: you will be able to see the processor type and Ram installed thus
If you have less than 2G of Ram you can install more, if however you have a Core Duo (instead of Core 2 Duo) you can not run Lion.

How much space is used by your Other? You may be able to reduce.
How Do I Get Rid Of The “Other” Data Stored On My iPad Or iPhone?
    http://tinyurl.com/85w6xwn
With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

  • Large, sudden loss of a lot of free space

Last night I got a warning that my start-up memory was under 1 gig. I looked at my available free space on my Macbook and saw that it had gone from near 30 gigs to about 770 megs. I've looked everywhere I can think of and can't find any new folders or anything that has transfered to it to cause such a change. Any ideas?

I would start checking around my hdd trying to figure out what is taking up so much space. Start with your hdd folder, checking the size on each internal file, trickling down to find what really big on your hdd. if you get into a folder that says it contains a large amount of data, but you don't see anything big in there, it may be hidden stuff, i've had that before. in that case, try this out: http://guides.macrumors.com/Viewinghidden_files_on_aMac

  • I am getting a Photoshop CC "scratch disk full" error, but my scratch disk is C:/ and I have 40 gigs of free space - help!?!

Why is Photoshop giving me this error when I'm not working on files that are that big given the amount of free space on my computer? They're around 1.5 megs each, .jpeg files (not even PSD files) and I'm only trying to resize them to smaller, nothing fancy at all. Can't even open and do one without getting the scratch disk full error - but it's not full when I look at my C:/ drive (even in PS when I check the scratch disks under Preferences you can see the multiple gigs free).
    Help anyone?
    Thanks!
    C

The rule of thumb I follow to figure out scratch space says to figure on 50 to 100 times the size of your largest file ever multiplied by the number of files you have open.  I have seen the scratch file exceed 800 GB once, an admittedly rare occurrence, but it often exceeds 200 GB when stitching large panoramas and the like.
As an example—and stressing that I'm aware that others have even more scratch space than I do—I keep two dedicated, physically separate hard drives as my primary and secondary Photoshop scratch disks and a lot of GB free on my boot drive for the OS.  I also have 16 GB of RAM installed.
Additionally, if you only have a single HD, i.e. your boot drive, you'd need it to be large enough to accommodate both the swap files of the OS as well as Photoshop's scratch.

  • Lots of free space that I cant use 5c

    Hi,
I have a iphone 5c, and I can only put a small amount of music on it. There is months of music on my computer, but when I 'autofill' it only puts about a hundred songs on. Afterwards there is about 5gB of free space on my phone. I also cant update apps etc as it thinks there is no free space left. I have checked I am not resrving this space for free space in the settings and I have done a software update to 8.2 and also a restore, but no joy. Why is it doing this?

You need an external disk that is formated as HFS+ with a GUID partition map.
You can use either Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to create the clone.
Once ypu have the clone you can boot from my holding down the option key ater power on.
Once booted from the clone open Disk Utility.
    Select the internal drive.
    Click partition.
    Select single partition.
Once drive has bee formated, restore the clone nack with the application used to make the original clone.
    Boot from internal drive.

  • I was trying to resize my bootcamp partition and it got deleted now I have 217 GB of free space that I cant use and I want to rejoin it with my macbook partiton.

So I was trying to resize my bootcamp partition with Paragon and it was taking forever so I decided to use iPartition the Paragon started doing something and it was almost done when my macbook began to shut down. It was shutting down becuase I though the paragon wouldnt work. Anyway it shut down and I wasnt able to boot to the iPartition CD, so I decided to just screw it and just stick with Mac osx. Then while in the iPartition app once I booted up back into OSX it said I had 217 gigs of free space and my hardrive/mac os partition can only use like 270 gigs. But I desparetely need these 215 gigs back becuase I do things that require alot of memory. Does anybody have any idea how I can rejoin this free space with my mac partition. I already tried it in disk utility and it kept failing with a couldnt unmount disk error everytime I tried to resize back to its full size! PLEASE HELP! Heres a pic of what iPartiton shows me.

  • Disk Utility says I have only 115kb of free space left, but Finder says 1TB is this why my computer is slow?

I want to instal the beta version of Yosemite on a partition, but when I open Disk Utility to do so, it won't allow me. After pressing the plus sign at the bottom of the screen I can not enter a value for the size. When I look down at the very bottom I read the following:
    Capacity: 3.12TB
    Available: 115KB
    Used: 3.12TB
My trash is empty and Finder says I have 1TB in free space available, so what's going on?
Perhaps related, my computer has been unreasonably slow (which is why I want to take the Beta for spin). I'm thinking there might be a connection. Is there a way to clear the detailed space so that Disk Utility will recognize it? In an attempt to speed things up I just reinstalled Maverick but nothing happened. I still can't partition and my computer is still slow.
    Everything is up to date.

  • Updated iPod software, and noe I have a "not enough free space" warning...

    Sooooooo...
Last night iTunes prompted me that I needed to updated my 4gb nano (2nd G), and after the software loaded, i got an error message about the file being corrupt. After that point, I can load playlists onto it, but it will not load songs checked in "My Library" that are not on playlists. I even went so far to uncheck everything but one song, and it still says "not enough free space"...I tried 4 restores, went through windows explorer and deleted to update file so it could be reinstalled, and still I got nothing...what am i missing??? I also need to mention that I did not add any music before or after the software update, and I was just a little over half full on the meter..I have pooped around with this for 5 hours, and I am utterly stumpped. My iPod is starting to look like a football on a tee if you know what I mean...

Has anyone recieved erroneous notifications to upgrade your icloud account? I got an email today which said my account was full but I actually have lot's of free storage.  The thing that worry me the most is that the email said my devices could not be backup anymore unless I free or purchase more space.  I wanted to contact support to get an explanation of why I got this email.  I try to contact support via email for about 15 minutes till I finally gave up because I could not find a link to send an email to Apple support.  Does anyone have this link? I am realy dissapointed.
