I suddenly cant highlight or drag things on my desktop. I cant drag things around or out in finder either. How come?

Clear the cache and the cookies from sites that cause problems.

* Tools > Options > Advanced > Network > Offline Storage (Cache): "Clear Now"
"Remove Cookies" from sites causing problems:
* Tools > Options > Privacy > Cookies: "Show Cookies"
Start Firefox in <u>[[Safe Mode]]</u> to check if one of the extensions is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Firefox (Tools) > Add-ons > Appearance/Themes).

Desktop items missing and cannot access Finder after Jan updates

All desktop items disappeared following the restart after updates on 25 Jan to my MacBook. I also cannot click on the desktop to access Finder. I cannot drag anything onto the desktop.
Any ideas how to recover from this? Ta.

Thanks for the feedback. Moving preference files associated with various applications, such as desktop, out of /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, logging out and back in, will cause the application to create a new default version. If that fixes the problem, then the original preference file (e.g., com.apple.desktop.plist) was most likely corrupted. Good computing.

Desktop Dims in and out

Just received my brand new Macbook Pro and got it set up easily. I'm sure this is probably a settings issue but I'm noticing that the screen (desktop) keeps "dimming" in and out. Any suggestions? Thx.

RAID wont work.. meaning i cant drag disks to make a raid

Hey.. is there something i dont know about? I just put 2 400gb drives in bay #3 and bay #4, and went to disk utility.. they show up, but when i click raid, i cant drag them together?

Did you partition and format them?
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Click on the Erase button.
Repeat above for second drive.
Note that if you have already installed OS X on one of the drives you cannot create a RAID. The RAID must be created when both drives are empty.

Okay, that's got one thing ruled out at least.
Can you check something for me, big? I'd like to see if iTunes launches with the Bonjour Service disabled.
In your Start menu, right-click Computer and select "Manage".
Expand "Services & Applications".
Open "Services". (Perhaps maximise the screen to better see what's going on.)
Right-click the Bonjour Service and select "Properties".
In the General tab, set the Startup type to "Disabled":
... and click OK.
Restart the PC and try launching iTunes. Does it open this time?

I have tried direct connecting the iphone 4, via wifi, everything. I hate itunes with a passion, but it seems to be a necessary evil. I dont know why I would have no trouble with my iphone 3. I am using the same technique for both phones. Find the music I want in the library and drag it to the iphone. Works on IOS 6, not IOS 7.
WHat else should I try?

Trackpad will no longer drag things or select text, other operations fine.

all of a sudden i noticed that i cant select (highlight) text and such with the trackpad. I also am unable to drag things like windows and files around. I am talking about physically clicking and dragging, both of the drag options are off in system preferences, but to my understanding those are for touch operations? anyway i enabled them and still nothing (touch or physical). I also tried using an external mouse which performs perfectly... all the outer fuctions of the touchpad are fine (scrolling, tap clicking, regular clicking, 4 finger wipe. etc) what should I do?
oh and its a 17" Macbook pro 2010, all up to date software...
edit: tap to drag is working i rechecked, but physical dragging (which is the only decent way to do things for me, is broken)

just wanted to add that my battery is not swollen at all, as i read that may be the cause. i took off the back panel and the battery was completely flush with the rest of the laptop.

Try restarting or logging out and back in, or both. If that doesn't fix it, create a new admin user in Sys Prefs>Accounts and test for this behavior there.

I deleted my desktop icon - now I can't save things to the desktop!

After a complete meltdown of my computer (and thank GOD I backed everything up!!) ... I'm transferring everything back to my iMac from an external drive ... BUT, I deleted the little "desktop" icon from my finder folder - or more like, I dragged a desktop folder from the external hard drive and "replaced" the desktop icon.
Now I can't save anything to the desktop. When I drag something to the desktop it says "The item cannot be moved because the 'desktop' cannot be modified."
Is there a way to get this back???

Under "Ownership & Permission" is says "You can - Read & Write", so that's not the issue.
What I did was:
When you open the finder window, there are several icons that appear in the window - usually the Desktop icon, the Home icon, the Applications icon, the Documents icon, the Movies icon, the Music icon and the Pictures icon.
What I did was, I dragged a "Desktop FOLDER" over from an external hard drive and it asked me if I wanted to replace the Desktop. I said "Yes" and now I no longer have the DESKTOP ICON on the left side of the finder window and I can no longer drag and drop things to the desktop.
The desktop icon no longer exists, so I can't access my desktop VIA the finder window.
Does this make sense?

This file cant be deleted off my desktop?

hi okay so i have this file on my desktop and it cant be deleted. everytime i try to delete it, it says "the item (its name) cant be moved to the trash because it cant be deleted". theres no .jpeg or anything like that on it but the icon preview shows that Preview picture icon and says jpeg on the picture... i cant get its info either. the image is from tumblr and when i dragged it to photoshop, i guess it went on my desktop to maybe?? so how can i delete it? thanks!!

First try Rebooting your Mac
Now try to delete it, (It might even have disappeared in the reboot !)
If you are comfortable with using Terminal and command line these commands will certainly rid you of this file !
Open Terminal from Utilities folder
paste at prompt cd Desktop/
paste at prompt rm –Rf
Drag file icon from desktop onto Terminal window
Press return
File will be gone.

Cant drag and drop in Mac mail

So in Mac Mail, I used to be able to drag an email address from the to: line to the cc: line. I can no longer do this. Also, I can no longer drag an attachment from the body of an email to the desktop. I can drag from the desktop to an email but not the other way. Any ideas?

Cant Drag Music files into iTunes

Hi there,
I have been using iTunes for ages with out any problems but from yesterday I have found that I cant drag music files from a folder (My Music etc)into iTunes library or straight to my iPod.
I can still use the "add file or folder" to library commands which work fine but I just cant drag files into iTunes like I used to. When I try I just get the circle with a line through it. The music files I am trying to drag are in the right format and I have even tried some files with are already on my iPod.
Also I use winamp as my default player. When I double click on any music files in a folder winamp will open but does not play the file. I can still select "play file" from winamp and browse for the track I want to play. That works fine.
So the same kind of thing is happening for both iTunes and winamp. I have searched for answers but still cant fix it. I have uninstalled and installed both iTunes and winamp. I remember having a problem like this before a long time ago but cant remember how to fix it.
Its driving me insane!

Are you just looking through the main library?
My videos never show up under the main library anymore.
They just show up under the movie or tv show headers.
