Suddenly, inadequate bandwidth

Sorry, I'm not very technical...I have used an isight to communicate with my family in Europe for the past 4 years. I live in a rural area of NE and have had verizon dsl the whole time. Since the beginning of this year, I cannot get the video chat to work and am informed that there is insufficent bandwidth. I tried testing my bandwidth on some the sites I found and generally I have a down stream (?) of >1000kbps but my up stream only sometimes gets as high as 50. Apparently the 2 numbers should be close in value? What would cause this change? is it me or the supplier and if it is verizon, what do I do to get this corrected? I would really appreciate some guidance here, my 17mo. granddaughter is growing by the minute and I'm missing it!!!

Hello rtcfrtc
First thing to try is shutting down everything and rebooting the system, including modem and router per their users manuals, before restarting your Mac. That ususally fixes my problems.
If that does not help you, you may have ISP ("the supplier") problems. Contact him to be sure he has not changed anything inadvertently. If that does not help, take a look at the troubleshooting suggestions in How to get iChat AV working again.

  • Apple 23" cinema HD display PSU suddenly inadequate

This has not happened to me, but a friend who is relatively new to apple products. 13 months after she got her 23" cinema display (which means one month out of warranty) the display suddenly would not turn on and was flashing short-long-short, or whatever the broken PSU signal is. Anyway, to verify that her PSU was indeed broken, I borrowed the 150W PSU from my 30", and the display turned on fine.
She went to the store and got a new 90W, but as it turns out the new 90W doesn't work either. It's still flashing the short-long-short code.
What this tells me is that the old power brick may not have been faulty, and that the display instead decided to suddenly require more power. Anyone else with this issue, or any suggestions what to do about it?
As for the old power brick, it's long gone and recycled in case you're wondering.

Similar Problem with our 2 year old Cinema Display in that it shows short-long-short flashing of Power LED and a blank screen. My wife said a thunderstorm was approaching, so she unplugged the computer and display power adapter. Next morning after plugging in the display stayed dead other than the flashing. Tried about everything including:
    1) Connected a VGA montor to the display card using a DVI to VGA adapter - Card X1900XT seemed OK.
    2) Reset PRAM
Like many I suspected Power Brick based on the Info from Apple. If the company is so environmentally friendly as they make out they would not seal their stuff, making it unrepairable - our throwaway society. The sealing only ages the electronics anyway because the heat transfer is restricted by the plastic case. I could not test the brick because it was difficult to get to the contacts in it without another proprietory Apple connector. So I thought what the heck and a sawed the brick open. The brick is outputting 24.7Vdc and also under load of 2.5A (my background is power electronics). The output connector has an identification resistor on one pin to ground that will incur a voltage across it when the display is connected. With the display connected and Brick open I measured 1V. This is how the displays identify the correct brick is attached. With the display connected, the 24Vdc was there and stable. So in my case I do not think it is the brick, but something in the display. One possibility is the Brick is not well designed and under some circumstances produces a surge when plugging the AC side in. A lightening induced surge is very unlikely, as it was very far off at that point and even so, an indirect strike should not get through to the load of a well designed power supply. You can be sure Apple do not design the Power Supplies, the Marketing only say how they should look. Must be a nightmare for the contracted design engineers.
We have no Apple Care, so repair will be likely unjustifiable. My wife has located a supplier with some 20" ACD's still in Stock (the 24" LED ACD has only a miniDVI so we cannot use that). Personally I would rather another brand. Our HP's at work have the same IPS type LCD display in side. They do not look as nice (our display is VESA mounted on the wall), and are bulkier, but at least you get 3 year warranty and they collect it for you on site if you have a problem.
I have used Apple products for 20 years, but this has got to be among the worst of their designed products from a reliabilty viewpoint.
Any one know how to open up a Cinema Display - I would like to look inside?

  • Why do I loss internet connections at frequent intervals while watching netflix moviesx

I have airport express which serves as wireless connection to my tv to watch netflix movies.I have roku xd as a streamer. At almostevery 7-10 minutes, I loss connection to the internet interrupting my movies . This happens at least 9 times thru a period of 1 hr. watch. Any thoght on this.

I would suspect inadequate bandwidth as the most likely reason ... and potentially Wi-Fi interference as the most likely culprit that is causing it.
Have you done any data transfer rate measurements on your local network or checked for any type of Wi-Fi interference that may be present in the area that may be preventing the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) from providing a clean signal to the Roku & TV?
Is the AXn the only wireless router in your local network?

  • Pausing Video causes audio dropouts in Connect Pro

When playing video (flv clips stored on the Adobe Connect Pro site), normally no buffering occurs:  the video plays back as fast as it loads, and the worst problem that might occur is the occasional freeze-up due to inadequate bandwidth.
If you pause the video during playback for any reason, the video continues to download, and this buffering is visible in the playback bar.  However, when you resume playback, after a few seconds the audio drops out (as video continues to play); the silence typically continues for 15 seconds or more, and then sound resumes.  This is not good.
The problem is highly repeatable, and does not seem to be related to connectivity, bandwidth or other issues.  Tweaking the room settings and personal connection speed have no impact, and the problem has been replicated on several different computers, using different Internet connections, using both Internet Explorer and Firefox as the Web client, and playing several different video files.  In short, it seems to me to be a bug in the Adobe Connect Plug-in client software.
Has anyone else experienced this?   Is there a fix?  (I have some "workaround" suggestions, if anyone wants them.)

Could be a drive problem. You might consider installing a second internal drive and using that for your media. I've got a sata card and a 5 bay enclosure and find them much more stable then firewire drives.
You might "repair" the drive using the disk utility to see if there are any problems. DiskWarrior is a very good investment and will fix many "directory" structure problems that the diskutility won't solve.

  • Powerbook to PC video problems - iSight

My Macbooks (one tiger, one leopard) connect to my PC pal (XP) and videochat no problem.
My Powerbooks (12 & 17", both tiger, iSight) connect and videochat with my Macbooks no problem.
When I attempt to connect to my PC pal with my Powerbooks, the request hangs, then fails with error message. A couple of times I have clicked thru to see a message suggesting inadequate bandwidth. (from the same connection that works with the Macbooks). I have checked my band speed and it appears fine.
I have cable running thru Airport Extreme 11g.
    Any ideas?

I take the ports are allowed in any routing device using UPnP judging by the number of computers.
Is System Preferences > Quicktime > Streaming set at 1.5Bps on all computers.
This is more important for Tiger that it is for Leopard.

  • Netflix app not working

My netflix app used to always work, now when I try to play a movie, it won't load, times out, and gives an error message: try another title.
I have tried reinstalling app, closing it, playing different titles, my wifi can stream things fine not on netflix

Netflix knows their app failure with iOS 6 isn't confined to a "small number" of devices; they know it isn't fixed because they haven't fixed it.  I assume they are buying time, waiting for another iOS upgrade so they can then start the cylce all over blaming Apple instead of their app.
You have to wonder, why? Does it solve any pipeline problems they might have with inadequate bandwidth by randomly denying service to a numer of subscribers at any given time? Or perhaps we should just assume incompetence rather than malice:  they don't want to do bad, they just don't know how to do good. The recent Netflix history would support the latter.
Frankly, I'm pretty sure they just don't care. Their business model seems based on the very worst kind of churn and burn telecom companies of a few years back that relied on bait-and-switch promotions and short-term discounts to sucker enough new customers to replace the disinchanted people leaving.

  • 970A-G46 will not POST

I'm trying to put a (new to me) system together using some parts that my son has upgraded from.  The used parts are the processor and cooling fan, the memory, and the PSU.  I also have his old graphics card, but a new one as well  Here is the list:
    Mobo: 970A-G46
    Processor: Athlon II x4635
Graphic card:  Saphirre HD5450 (also have son's ASUS EN9500GT)
    Memory: 2 x 4 GB Corsair CMV4GX3M1A1333C9
    PSU: Orion HP585D  (3.3 V: 36 A, 5V: 36A, +12V1: 19 A, +12V2: 20 A, -12V: 1A +5sb:2A)
    Drives: 120gb Kensington SSD

I expect you are right about the PSU quality, but up until Friday evening it has been in service running a 6-core AMD and the same video card, along with an 8-disk HD array (son is doing PHD in computational physics, and works his stuff pretty hard).  Voltages when checked w multi-meter are fine.  I find it hard to believe that it is suddenly inadequate to my far less demanding application.
When we assembled it last night, the only anomaly I noticed was that the PSU connector for JPWR2 was only four pins.  We used pins 1, 2, 5, and 6, and all four blue LEDs were illuminated indicating that all cores were getting power.
This afternoon I have removed the mobo and all connections and cleared the CMOS, trying to follow the cannot-boot-up-properly MSI page.  Also, based on another post on this forum, I tried each individual RAM stick in slots one and two.  I have re-seated the CPU and video card. So far, I have not seen or heard anything that would indicate that this mobo is working.
Any further ideas, or is replacing PSU the only game in town?
(Sorry about lack of story in first post – somehow it was posted WAY before I was done with my saga)

  • IChat suddenly has insuffient bandwidth?

I've been using iChat for a month with my TiPB 867. No problems until recently.
I use a Verizon Wireless aircard (Kyocera). My surfing speed runs at least 256 and as high as 1gig. But when iChat kicks in (as of a week ago), it drops below 20. Obviously, I get an error -22.
Today, this was the error message:
2007-06-23 16:41:58 -0700: There is insufficient bandwidth to maintain the conference.
Detected 36 kbps upstream and 36 kbps downstream bandwidth; 50 kbps required.
    Chat ended with error -22
    Chat ended with error -22
I am most confused. No problems with Yahoo Messenger. Only with iChat.
    What should I do?
    Thanks!
    Michele

There must be something more going on here, as (see my prior post) I have been having the same issue all day long as have the "buddies" I have chatted with. Whenever either side tries to initiate a video conference, we get the same error.
The only thing I can think of that is different from the last time I used iChat is that I downloaded the latest Safari 3 beta update last night (3.0.2)and also have downloaded Mac OSX update (10.4.10) I have no third party programs for Safari or iChat running.
How many others are having this issue???
Does anyone from Apple have a solution for us?

  • Suddenly getting "insufficient bandwidth"

I do apologize if this topic has been beaten to death. iChat has been working wonderfully well for me and my friend, for a couple of weeks. Now, with no particular changes on either end, we are getting "insufficient bandwidth to connect".
Any help is very appreciated. Thank you. Darcy

  • Why would my late 2012 MacBook Air suddenly tell me "This movie can be played only on displays that support HDCP (High-bandwidth Digital Content Protection)" every time I try to play a film, or TV file?

8GB late 2012 MacBook Air 512GB SSD with iTunes for Mac 12.1.0.50. Yosomite 10.10.2
This happens on movies and TV titles that have happily run before.

    It is everything.
Downloading again doesn't seem to work. I deleted all my films and then just re-downloaded Pixar's 5 minute short film Boundin', but the error message popped up as soon as I pressed play.
The only thing I can think of is that last couple of times I ran Disk Utility a new error appeared that I haven't seen before. I have added a link to a screenshot of the Disk Utility report and it refers to "displaypolicyd should be should be 0, group is 244". It says it has been fixed, but the error still persists each time. This may be a red herring, but I can't help thinking that it is something to do with the problem.

  • SMTP chewing up bandwidth like crazy! Please help!

I've got a crazy problem with a client's server. First, it's an xServe running 10.4.11 with all software updates. It's been in service as a WWW, Mail, FileMaker, FTP, AFP & Windows file server for several years now. Up until the other day, the machine ran without too many glitches.
The other day, users started complaining that the Internet was really slow. After looking into it, I was able to conclude that SMTP was bogging down the connection. With SMTP off, repeated speed test resulted in about 6 Mbps consistently. When SMTP was fired back up, our speed test results would drop to 300 Kbps or less!!! If my math is correct, that means that SMTP alone was using more than 95% of our 6 Mbps of bandwidth!!!
I found that if I stopped Mail service using Server Admin -- or if I issue "sudo killall smtp", the connection speed would go back up. Then over the course of an hour or so, enough SMTP daemons launch and eventually bog down the connection again.
SMTP relay is OFF and I've confirmed that the server cannot be used as a relay. I've also confirmed it's not another machine on the network -- I literally unplugged the rest of the network so it was just me, my server, my router and my cable modem.
I booted the server from my service drive and examined the hard disks with Disk Utility and then DiskWarrior. I found and repaired only a couple of very minor problems. I also ran repair permissions on the boot volume. I have tried turning off mail service and creating a new, fresh IMAP database and mail store just to eliminate those as a cause. I tried removing the blacklist servers from the config, but that had no effect either.
When I look at the logs, nothing jumps out at me. Maybe because I'm not accustomed to looking at mail logs. Again, this problem is "all-of-the-sudden". Over the past several years, I would regularly connect to this server over the Internet for screen control with Remote Desktop and would get reasonably smooth performance. Now, SMTP has the Internet connection so jammed that I can barely connect with Remote Desktop (unless I kill off the SMTP processes first).
Below, I've included the postfix config files (/etc/postfix/main.cf & /etc/postfix/master.cf) AND the last 50 entries in the mail.log file. Hopefully I've answered most questions and made it clear that this problem is extreme and all-of-the-sudden. NOTE: I've changed my client's domain to 'mydomain.com' to protect their privacy -- But i've altered no other information.
Any suggestions??? I am at a total loss! If I install Mac OS X server, I create a lot of work for myself and the only reason I'm thinking of reinstalling is because I DON'T KNOW WHAT ELSE TO DO!!!

Further investigation shows that after killing all the smtp (or otherwise restarting it) it works fine for a while then goes nuts launching SMTP and SMTPD processes.
So if the connection is bogged down and SMTP is out of control, I issue:
    sudo killall "smtp"
and the connection speed goes back to normal for a while and the output of
    ps -aux | grep "smtp"
    is as follows:

  • WiFi clients suddenly can no longer connect to WRT320N router

I have a WRT320N router that I have been using for about 3 months now.  I have a mixture of B, G & N clients using Win 2000, Win XP, Win 7, Mac OS X and Linux OSs.  This is my home network.  Everything worked fine until yesterday when, suddenly, none of my wireless clients could connect to the router.  Wired clients were fine.  I tried rebooting machines, resetting the router etc... without success.  I called Linksys tech support and had the tech troubleshoot it.  He got it working again by changing the Wireless Channel Width setting from "Auto (20Mhz or 40Mhz)" to "20Mhz only".  He also changed the channel setting from "Auto" to "9".  This works fine except for my N client where before I was connecting to the router at 240-300Mbps, I am now connecting at 78-117Mbps, less then 1/2 the speed I was connecting at previously.  I called tech support again today and discussed it with a diffrerent tech.  He told me that if my N client was getting over 100Mbps that I was within the specs of the router and that no Linksys router could connect faster than 200Mbps.  Huh?
My N adapter is a Netgear USB WN111.  The Linksys tech says that maybe that adapter can "suck" (his technical term) more bandwidth from the router than the router should be capable of and suggested I call Netgear to verify that.
My point is that everything worked fine for the past 3 months at 240+Mbps and now suddenly it doesn't work.  The tech says there must be some sort of interference which seems like a possibility but I live out in the country with no close neighbors and I haven't brought in anything new recently that would explain the sudden problem.
I think the router developed a hardware problem which is causing it to not perform as well as it did.  Anybody got ant other ideas?

I would suggest you to reflash/upgrade the router's firmware, reset the router after that and reconfigure it from the scratch..You can download the firmware from www.linksysbycisco.com/downloads.On the linksys setup page, click on the Administration tab to upgrade the firmware.

  • Internet sharing suddenly stopped working - please help!

I have been sharing my internet for weeks from my computer but this morning it suddenly stopped working. I've tried changing the password, changing the channel number, and changing the Network name to a simple one, but it is all not working Apparently the authentication server is not responding? How can I fix that?

I'm having the same problem. I had internet sharing set up on my iMac from Ethernet via AirPort, and received quite well on my MacBook and iPod Touch, and then one day, it just stopped working. I'm assuming that some update or other caused this problem, but I have no idea which (I mostly use the internet on my desktop machine, so it may have been several days before I noticed the problem). I've tried with-and-without a password, and also tried sharing from my MacBook to the iMac and iPod Touch, and I can't get any bandwidth (I can connect to the 802.11 network that I create, but I can't get any internet through it).

  • Sudden Shutdown of iMacs with 16GB of RAM

An ongoing discussion of iMac shutdowns over at Apple Discussion has prompted me to try to get some answers to this issue that we too are seeing in one of our i5 iMacs with 16GB of 3rd Party RAM.
    http://discussions.apple.com/messageview.jspa?messageID=13311466&stqc=true
Recently we found that the issue could be repeated when transforming a layer in Photoshop CS5. Dragging the image around, resizing it a few times will consistently cause a sudden shutdown of the machine. Not a standard shutdown or kernel panic, but an instant off to black screen. The machine will boot right back up with no problem.
Further, we also found that this would occur when the Photoshop tile cache size was set to 128k. Setting it up to 1024k seemed to get rid of the issue and we were never able to recreate the issue when set to 1024k tile cache.
Now I would think to blame Photoshop, but it happened in CS4 and CS5. It also has happened in other apps as well. It just so happens that Photoshop
is doing something that exacerbates the issue and triggers it.
Now, my question is this. And it is rather technical in nature, so if any Adobe techs are reading this, I would love your take on it.
I'd like to know what is going on in terms of data exchange between, RAM, video card or swap space when an image is being transformed.
Does the change in the tile cache size change how large the chunks of data are that are cached to the video card as well?
I'm wondering what the change in tile cache size could possibly be changing that could alleviate this issue.
There are also a number of reports that say removing 4 or 8 GB to leave 12GB or 8GB configs alleviates this issue as well. Do machines with smaller RAM configs exchange data in different size blocks?
I hope this all makes sense. Any info would be appreciated.
    Scott

Not a standard shutdown or kernel panic, but an instant off to black screen.
That means that you have a hardware problem, probably in the RAM, but possibly in the motherboard.  (having inadequate power supply to the RAM is a common problem that causes this - could be a bad capacitor, or a bad design)
An Apple technician should be able to put a scope on the power and signal pins of the RAM and see the problem happen (looking for a capacitive discharge pattern in the signals, dropping below signal threshold).
Changing the tile and cache size just changes the RAM access pattern slightly, but doesn't affect GPU usage much.
Yes, Photoshop moves a lot of data in and out of RAM with highly optimized code - which tends to expose problems with the hardware sooner than other applications.

  • Sudden Jump in Broadband usage

This month I have experienced a sudden jump in my usage. My average daily usage has approximately doubled.
Yesterday usage was 2.1GB .... Have data traffic monitors running on my iPads and PC's and I have an enormous discrepancy.
My Internet WiFi is shutdown between 22:30 and 7:30 every day.
Usual average monthly usage is 30.04GB ..... so far this month I am at 22.5GB as of the 12/6/15.
Clearly, my worry is that my 40GB will be exceed and subsequently be charged for what I perceive to be bandwidth I have not used.
Where can I find out WHEN my Internet (as in time of day) is being used and ideally how much traffic has been generated during that period (on an hourly basis would suffice)

Unless I can resolve this, I guess the only answer is to cancel my BT Broadband and move to an unlimited package with another provider.
All I ask is for some basic information, breakdown of usage during 24 hours, how difficult can this be ! Any breakdown !
Call me cynical, but what better way to force users onto the more expensive unlimited packages in order the save going over their monthly limit. Had BT broadband for I think 3 years now and never once gone over my monthly limit.
Something is wrong and all I want is the answer to a simple request from BT.
Like I mentioned before, I know that their recording of user data is flawed.
