Suddenly mail spins forever on send/receive

Hello Community...
I am trying to help my father troubleshoot his Mail program from 5k miles away! Before I lead him into remote desktop, I thought I would try here and see if someone has any ideas of what to do for him. So thanks in advance!
The situation:
He is running a 24" iMac with the 10.5.8 and Mail 3.6, I believe.
He has a .mac email account which is setup in Mail and was working trouble free until a few days ago.
His last message is from Nov. 29 but now the little icon just spins and spins never sending or retrieving anything.
He is able to access the account from his iPhone and also by signing in online at me.com
The internet connection is fine, as we were trying to solve it over skype.
Troubleshooting tried so far:
Check account setup - all OK
use connection doctor - all green
move com.apple.mail.plist to desktop and restart mail - no difference
repair disk permissions/restart - no difference
check for automatic updates that may have affected mail - not sure. There was one on Nov. 28 for HP printer driver and iPhoto. Because he has mail from the 29th it doesn't seem a likely culprit.
If anyone has any ideas of where to look next, I would appreciate it!

I am having the exact problem on my MacBook Pro, but not on my iMac. I tried deleting the cache.db file and it didn't change anything. Any other ideas out there? I am running Leopard 10.5.8 and I have run all the latest software updates.

  • Mail takes forever to send all of a sudden!

    For some reason, my mail app is taking forever to send anything all of a sudden. Even smaller text-only emails take a couple minutes. I've tried ports 25 and 587 - no difference. Any thoughts?
    Also I am upgrading from 1gb to 2gb RAM tomorrow - would that speed things up at all? (I don't imagine that it would...any thoughts?)

    It could be that there is a problem with the particular outgoing server you’re using. Are this mail account and the associated outgoing (SMTP) server provided by your ISP or by someone else?
    It could also be that there is something wrong with your network settings. Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
    Try using a different method to connect to Internet, if possible, or connecting the computer to Internet as directly as possible, i.e. bypassing any routers that might be present, using an ethernet cable instead of wireless, etc and see whether that makes a difference.

  • Mail starts to play send/receive sounds whenever I plug in a audio cable into the macbook pro

    Hi,
    I have this strange bug:
    I have Mail running and I plug in an audio cable into the audio out jack. Then Mail starts to play send and receive sounds endlessly. Then I have to quit Mail and start it again. Then everything is fine. I think I can live with that, but it's also kind of annoying. Any hints?
    Thanks!

  • Mail services refuse to send/receive emails.

    Hi! I think Apple Server update (PPC) 10.4.9 has screwed up my mail settings...and hence i did a clean install of OS 10.4 (Tiger) with stock software and nothing else.
    I added in the same configurations but the mail server just will not receive or send out any mails via smtp.
    Here's the postconf -n output:

  • Mail takes FOREVER to send. Suggestions?

    I had this problem since I got my Mac and 10.5.6. I've been using Thunderbird but would like to be able to use Mail for the integration with the rest of OS X, iLife. Thunderbird works as expected, sending and receiving.
    Receiving is fine, but sending takes about 20 seconds or longer to send just a one word text (test) message. Setting are identical to Thunderbird.
    I was hoping SL would fix this. Any ideas why it takes so long to send?
    Gene

    Gene,
    Try going into your SMTP settings for your mail server (Mail -> Preferences -> Accounts).
    Where it says Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP), drop down that list, then choose "Edit SMTP Server List...".
    Choose the correct outbound mail server, click on "Advanced", then click the radio button for "Use custom port:". Enter 25 in that box. (If that doesn't work, you might call you ISP and ask what port they're using for SMTP).
    Save those changes, then see if you can send any faster. If I understand correctly, Apple implemented some sort of "round robin" type scheme for choosing which mail port to use if you have the default "Use default ports" setting selected.
    Hope this helps.

  • Mail app can't send/receive

    I've tried restarting it and making sure the ports were entered correctly, but it still can't connect to AOL to send or receive anything. Ideas?

    Hi
    I've had just about the exact same fault with my mail program. I get a message saying the server doesn't recognise my password. But once I'd put all the relevant info into Entourage it all worked perfectly.
    I wonder if something's up with the apple mail program.

  • I've just purchased an ipad2 and have synced it with outlook to get all contacts.  I've also set up my earthlink mail account and it sends/receives fine.  IS there a way to sync it so I get all of the legacy emails sitting in the OUtlook inbox?

    I've just purchased an ipad2 and have synced it with Outlook to get all contacts, etc.  I've set up the mail account and it is working just fine.  The sync doesn't pull over legacy emails from Outlook and my Outlook has been set up to remove them from the webmail server therefore they aren't available from webmail anymore.  Is there anyway to pull them over to the iPad?

    But is there a way (simple or not-so-simple) to find
    out EVERY SINGLE FILE that's referenced on a
    timeline? (I have lots of stuff imported into the
    project that I know isn't used on any timeline, but
    I'm afraid of moving or deleting things for fear of
    never finding it again.)
    I'd love to get some sort of "printout" (a list or
    something) of every single file.
    There is, go to browser and cntrl click on any one of the columns,
    and select - show/source. A new column named "source" will pop up and will show where everything "lives". Click on the header at the top and it will justify the column as well. You'll notice this won't show anything for your seq.'s. of course, but will show stills/audio/motion files...
    Once you have the new column, you can drag it next to the "name" column and get a grab of it and print it if you like, or whatever.
    If you want to do this for just 1 seq., then can create a new bin and double click it to open it. Cntrl-A (select all) in your main seq. and just drag all into the new bin. You will see only what's in that seq. with the "source" column right next to it.
    From what I've read, you seem to get the MM thing and it's obviously what you'll need to do to archive as the guys said. But what your missing is a file path system to where everything resides.
    Hope this helps and that I've read you properly,
    Peace

  • How can I use authentication type in sending/receiving a message

    Dear all,
    I am building a mail client program. I have a problem: I don't know use javamail to authenticate to mail server in while send/receive messages. I know some authentication types as PLAIN, LOGIN, CRAM-MD5, DIGIT-MD5, NTLM and GSSAPI. and I tried use "mail.imap.sasl.mechanisms" property, but it do not work. Any suggestion is helpful for me. Thanks!

    Thank for quick your reply,
    I checked with Imap protocol to receive message. The mail server supported authentication type: Plain and Login. Below is code:
          Properties props = System.getProperties();
          String socketFactoryClass = "javax.net.SocketFactory";
          String host = account.getIncomingHost();
          int port = Integer.valueOf(account.getIncomingPort());
          String fallback = "mail.imap.socketFactory.fallback";
          String imapSocketFactoryClass = "mail.imap.socketFactory.class";
          String emailAddress = account.getIncomingUser();
          props.put("mail.mime.base64.ignoreerrors", "true");
          if (account.isIncomingSsl()) {
            MailSSLSocketFactory socketFactory = this.getSSLSocketFactory(host);
            if (account.getSecureAuthsIncoming().equalsIgnoreCase("starttls"))
              props.put("mail.imap.starttls.enable", true);
            else
              props.put("mail.imap.ssl.enable", "true");
            props.put("mail.imap.ssl.socketFactory", socketFactory);
            props.put("mail.imap.sasl.mechanisms", account.getAuthMechsIncoming());
          props.put(fallback, "false");
          props.put(imapSocketFactoryClass, socketFactoryClass);
          Session session = Session.getInstance(props, null);
          String protocolName = "imap";
          if (Utils.isGmailAccount(emailAddress))
            protocolName = imaps;
          IMAPStore imapStore = (IMAPStore) session.getStore(protocolName);
          try {
            imapStore.connect(host, port, emailAddress, account.getIncomingPassword());
          } catch (Exception e) {.....}account.getAuthMechsIncoming() return authentication types, this instance is Login or Plain(as I tested). By the way, I have a problem how to check authentication types supported by server(as Evolution Mail on Ubuntu has)?. sorry for my English. Thank for your consider time.

  • I suddenly can't send or fetch .mac messages through mail - spinning wheel

    Hi all, first post!
    I can't seem to receive any mail from my .mac (mobileme) account through my mail app. other (pop) accounts seem fine and i can access mobile me online. It's giving me a constant fetching mail spinning wheel, for 4 days now. won't show me any account info when i ctrl click either. any ideas would be gratefully received

    exact same issue here. I live in Adelaide, South Australia. My iPad, iPhone an Mac all won't send but will receive emails happily. Sending via Bigpond works fine so I am certain that the apple server itself is the problem.
    Am waiting patiently for Apple to get it up and running again.
    Despite this I can send emails for iCloud on the webpage.

  • TS3274 how come all of a sudden, I cannot send/receive messages, but I can receive e-mails in my Ipad?

    HOW COME I CANNOT /SEND RECEIVE MESSAGES, BUT I CAN RECEIVE EMAIL?

    Sending and receiving messages has absolutely no relation at all to sending and receiving email.
    Your iPad is not a cellular telephone.  It cannot send or receive SMS text messages.  It can only send or receive iMessages, which are messages to/from other Apple devices (only) on a WiFi or a cellular network that supports iMessage.

  • POP email account spins forever, never retrieves mail - how to cure?

    I've made no changes to my OS Lion mail settings, but suddenly (yesterday) my main POP account just spins forever and never retrieves mail nor gives an error.  Also now sometimes I have to force quit the client because mail never completely quits the normal way.  I've installed all the OS updates, and my iphone and ipad can retrieve the mail from that account with the same settings just fine.
    Help?

    This has just started for me in exactly the same way after I updated my wifes comp to 10.7.5. The iphones and ipads all send and retrieve mail with the same settings with no problems at all.
    Did you finally solve this problem?

  • Can not send e-mails from account but can receive

    I have my e-mail account with ATT Yahoo.
    I received an account verification notice yesterday from ATT and I responded and they said I was verified.
    However after I did that I could not send e-mails from my Imac desktop but I am receiving them.
    I spend 4 and a half hours, yes 41/2 hours with both Apple Care and ATT and they could not correct the problem. Both discussions were with upper tier support personnel.
    Here are some facts that make this an odd issue:
    (1)
    I have other e-mail boxes from ATT and they can send and receive e-mails.
    (2)
    MY laptop can still send and receive e-mails from the e-mail account that is only receiving with my Imac.
    (3)
    All the settings are exactly the same and both Apple Care and ATT checked them.
    Is there anybody out there that may have an answer ?
    Both Apple Care and ATT blamed each other.
    My concern is that today I received another e-mail trying to verify my e-mail address for another e-mail address from ATT.
    I called ATT and they did not know why, I DID NOT open it up and trashed it.
    ATT has put a filter on my other e-mail accounts and hopefully that will end any problems with them.
    The account that has the issue is my main account and I cannot trust leaving it and am trying to avoid having to change it.
    Greg

    Hi Rachel, For what it will be worth, I was like a dog with a bone about this, so I decided to give it another go. I have success on both boxes. Here is what I did, I warn you now it was a lengthy process. Before you begin download all the upgrade steps from X.5.0 to X.5.6 as single stages ( for me the combo's did not work) and have them ready to use.
    1st Backup all your mail to CD/DVD not on the box. Check for any unsent mails anywhere in the box and then throw out all of the mail bits that are anywhere on the system in any folder. 2nd Install & Archive, 3rd Start up from Install DVD and check/set permissions, reboot. Enter all your ISP details to mail, see if you can send a mail to yourself. If not dump all the mail you tried and the .plists, reboot and install next update in the series, enter all details as before, try and send etc. If this fails dump again and reboot install next update etc.
    I started at X.5.1 and got to vX.5.4 before I got a result in that sys asked me if this server will do, I said yes and I got mail out. The server name was different that was offered but when all was over it showed as the correct one that it should be on port 995. I must add that I had the spinning cog wheel for quite some minutes before anything happened. I continued on this way for the rest of the updates. 1x1 until v.6 was reached. That was only on the G4, I now had to do it all again on the MacPro. This one was not so co-operative in that I had to do it twice, but now it also has Mail running. It is funny though that I had to reach X.5.4 on both machines before it came right. On the G4 I was using a retail disc and on the Intel the supplied for discs.
    Others on here may have a better and quicker way, but for me this did work. I am sure that there is a problem in either the mail app itself or the production of the Master DVD's.
    Whatever, good luck.

I wait until about 60meg, but no new mail. Using Gmail. Connectivity Doctor says connected fine. No probs there. And weirdly, when I want to send an email. I write it, it takes absolutely ages to try to send but as soon as I click disconnect it sends the email. Very odd. I would just love to be able to write all my emails offline and save to drafts/Outbox and then just connect to send and check emails then disconnect again.

  • Mail (5.3) OS X 10.7.5 mail program crashing when opening an email with attachment. Any suggestions out there? I can open the mail program...send and receive emails...click on emails without attachments with no problem.

    I am having a problem successfully opening an email containing attachment. I can open the mail program...send and receive emails...and view emails that do not contain attachments. But whenever I click on an email containing an attachment, I get the spinning beach ball for a few seconds and then the entire program closes. Any suggestions before I make a one hour trip to the Apple store for help?

    I don't think an interactive portion of a PDF is an obscure problem (lots of designers I know use rollable PDF files for emailing 3D models) and while I understand that it's in a legacy program, there is no guarantee if I purchase Acrobat X, that the same problem won't exist. It's no an issue in Reader 10 but then again, it wasn't an issue in Reader 9 either. Since Adobe doesn't give trial versions for Mac (stupid), I have no way of checking this. The problem doesn't annoy me as much as being an Adobe product user who upgraded only to not have functionality and not have a way to have it resolved.
