Suddenly never ending pinwheel and slower than usual
My macbook pro suddenly started to get slow and gave me a never ending pinwheel while only having Safari running. The mouse was working but no response when clicking. Only way to restart computer was by holding down the Start button. Restarted and this time the computer hang up when I tried to Log in (while writing Login and password). I mangaged to Log in two more times but I got the pinwheel again when browsing internet. Finally I managed to make it to Support/Community.. any idea what's wrong?

Do a SMC and PRAM reset first, then a Hardware Test

Check the time and date on your computer to make sure it's correct.
If your still having slowdowns, pull the power plug on both the router and the modem, connect the modem and wait a bit then connect the router. Reboot your computer and it should connect automatically to your wifi. See if your slowdowns only occur if connecteted to the WiFI or not, that way it can be determined if it's a internet issue or not.
(If your still having slowdowns, it might be because you have a Open Network on your router and someone is leaching off of it. WPA 2 with AES is the only secure wifi standard))

IF your computer still has issues then:
Fish out the 10.6.x disks that came with your computer (grey) or the 10.6.3 Snow Leopard retail disk, stick it in the computer and reboot holding the c key.
(Make sure the disks are clean on the bottom, wipe with a very soft cloth and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol to clean and don't place the disk on a harsh surface that can damage the bottom.)
Second screen in, under the Utilities menu is Disk Utility, select your drive on the left and click First Aid, Repair Disk (please write down any errors this gives and tell us) and Repair Permissions (the results there you can ignore)
Do not erase or reformat the drive.
Reboot and see if your computer works, if not repeat the c boot off the installer disk again and this time skip Disk Utility and install OS X.
It will install on top of your 10.6.8 installed version (only, not your programs or files), which when finished you reboot and immediately Software Update to 10.6.8
This should take care of anything wrong with OS X itself.
Now to clean the caches of the user and other checks.
Download the free OnyX for 10.6 and run ALL the maintenance and cleaning aspects and reboot at the end of the tasks (you can cancel in between reboots) but reboot at the end of using Onyx)
Do all the checks it asks when it starts up and note any errors here they report.
Also under the Verify Tab is a Preference (plist) check, check the "show only corrupt files" and run that, make a note of all and any corrupt plist files.

Plist files are preference settings files that sometimes get corrupted and may be the cause of your problems.
If you have some, then you can look in your Users/Library/Preferences folder for them and Trash them and reboot the machine and load the program responsible, the plist file gets rebuilt without your preferences which you reset.

Finally install and run ClamXAv on your drive, this will look for known malware that might have gotten accidentally installed.

Since OS X was reinstalled, along with bundled programs like Safari, this should only leave applications and users as a source of any infection.
If your stil having issues, then create a new user and transfer your files over and when up on the new user, delete it.

I am using zcs 8.0.3_GA_5664.FOSS. Few days back i observe that my server working slow than usual. I found that zmconfigd not runnig or sometime running but mail input and output is slow. I google the issue and some people said to change/disable the line /etc/hosts ipv6 line ":: 1 localhost.localdomain........". I did that but still slow.

My mountain lion OS hangs like windows does and sumtimes have visual glitches like the drop down menu's are half visible. Sometimes it slows down at every point. And its just 2 months old. Please help.
Isolating Issues
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try a restart.
Run Disk Utility/Repair Permissions. Run until it reports no errors. If there is a recurring error, see the article on what permission errors can be ignored.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode. Shut down the computer and then power it back up. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

My macbook is much slower than usual
About 2 weeks ago I noticed the MacBook was running slower. Slower starting up, and slower to start applications. The beachball comes up more often & it will temporarily hang up mid-word, while typing an email or a web address sometimes.
2 GB RAM, Still more than 60% harddrive space open, The problem exists even when only one application is open, MacBook is 1 1/2 years old.
So...I'm wondering, could I have applications open in the background upon start-up without knowing it?
Was there a recent update that could have caused this?
And most importantly, is there a cure?

I did as you suggested, and I don't see any program that is using double digit percentages of the processor. The history shows almost nothing and then huge spikes when it does anything (like go to the previous webpage, or scroll down in the document).
When I ask the computer to do pretty much anything (like update a saved a file that has one more word typed in), the spinning beach ball pops up for a minute or two. Then other times, it will act fine for 30 minutes and then very sluggish again.
Start-up times are anywhere from 7 minutes to 30 minutes. It used to be 1-2 minutes. Start up hangs up most on the apple with the little circle below.
I tried rebooting the PRAM (command, option, P, R).

Web sites loading slower than usual, sometimes not loading at all...
Hello everyone!
I´m using Lion on an iMac (mid-2010) and I´m frequently having problems loading some web sites using a wi-fi. They take much more time than usual to load and not all elements of the pages are loaded, like thumbnails and other images for example.
E-mail, torrent and instant-messaging programs work as usual though.
As you guys might guess, I had no problems using Snow Leopard.
I tried many things to solve the problem: resetting the SMC, setting a fixed ip, resetting the iMac and the router, setting other dns addresses.
They seem to work for a while but the problem eventually returns.
Is anybody experiencing something like this?Your above posted system details show outdated plugin(s) with known security and stability risks.

Hello, I've been putting up with this for awhile now (3 months or so) I have a macbook pro, and my hard drive failed the first time, so I replaced it and formatted it, everything was fine. I've been dealing with the rainbow pinwheel and lag for awhile now and I'm sick of it, when opening a webpage it takes like 30-45 seconds, and when I play Diablo 3 and WOW I have about 5 minutes of game time, then it freezes, and then resumes. when ever I try to sync music the sync button doesn't work. This just started happening since I updated to version 5.0. I tried restoring it but that didn't work. It still won't sync anything. what do I do?

Audio out of sync with elemental plugin, and slower than my i7!!!

I just got a PNY nvidia quadro 1800 with elemental accellerator plugin. I just transcoded 2 hours of HDV straight from premiere 4 with Adobe Media Encoder using the Elemental codec and the audio is out of sync. It plays out of sync on the Blu Ray disk, and in Encore4. The audio is perfectly synced in Premiere. I just did another project a week ago without the Elemental, using the default Main Concept encoder and the audio is perfect. I am pretty sure I have the latest version of the Elemental Accellerator because there is a button to check for updates and it says there are no updates available. Does anybody know what is wrong here?.
The transitions are getting messed up. I can see a small section with the audio synced, then the video repeats after a second throwing them out of sync. I also suspect that the Elemental accelerator does not process any faster than the default h.264 for Blu Ray encoder. I hope I did not waste my money on this nvidia quadro 1800..
Whoooaa! I just woke up and checked the transcoding time.. To transcode approximately 2 hours of HDV it took 6:35 (hr:mm) with the elemental accellerator and it took 5:09 with my i7 920 chip!! Was that nvidia card a waste of money, or what?!!! Between the slower speed and the audio out of sync, I'd say I made a BIG misteak.. Does anybody want to buy a PNY nvidia quadro 1800? it'll be on ebay very soon..

I don't think my audio interface has anything to do with it.. I am using Adobe Media Encoder for the export and the Audio interface's latency has nothing to do with it.. I see the source of the problem but not the solution.. The Elemental plugin is not working properly with the transitions in Premiere. The transitions are visibly botched and the sound is in sync for a partial second of each clip, then the video skips backward as the sound keeps playing. This happens on every clip after the transition.
Whatever you were talking about might have to do with some kind of real time export, but to where? I think Premiere might have some auto plugin delay compensation for audio tracks.. I dont think you even read my post.. My MOTU 896 Mk3 audio interface has a 128 sample buffer leaving a few milliseconds of latency, and I can set it as low as 64.. This still has nothing to do with my problem.. Thanks for your input..
I am curious to know what you thought I was capturing elemental streams and audio from my interface in real time to.. I was unaware of anything that works like that in this type of editing..
The bottom line is that my i7 chip gets the job done much faster than the quadro 1800, and that's a shame that I spent the money on the 1800.. On top of that it doesn't even work properly!! -
Machine is slower than usual following update to OS 10.10.1
This is rather inexact but the best I can do. The finder is slower to show the contents of folders, i.e. the Applications folder takes longer to reveal its contents. I just opened the Contacts application (formerly Adddress Book) It takes at least 20 seconds to open. And even quitting it is not swift.

308 MB Page-outsThere is no harm in having multiple A-V software installations as long as only one is running real-time / on-access detection in the background. That will cause you a lot of slowness as they struggle to scan files simultaneously. It's unlikely that any of them will find anything that isn't already detected by OS X as long as you keep it fully up-to-date, don't disable it's protection and pay attention to alerts they give you.
I have at least six A-V products installed at the moment, but only use them for testing and rarely have one of them running background processes other than updates. -
My computer is slower than usual...
My mac G4 has gotten slower...
it takes more time for files to download or programs to open...
(like simple things that used to take no time at all are taking time to load now)
and that "beachball" comes out often...
what can i do to fix this?

Shouldn't be. In theory having to work with a larger drive should take longer but today's drives and computers are so fast I don't think this is the reason, especially since you just started working with it.

I think you mean install the operating systems not the disks. Yes, I have a dual booting machine with OS9 on one drive and OSX on another. You can also have both on the same drive. If you computer is capable of booting into OS9 you can have it do that, or boot into OSX, or use OS9 as Classic, or keep two copies of OS9, one for Classic and the other for native booting (probably really best done on two separate drives in this case though not absolutely essential). Doesn't really matter where they are located (since you're using a G4). -
Never-ending Indexing and backing up...
Here's my situation. I have a Macbook Pro. A few years old. I updated my operating system when the updater popped up. Ever since, Time Machine hasn't been able to do a successful backup. I plug in my backup drive and spotlight starts indexing... forever. It'll say 2 hours for a while, then go up to 4, then 10 minutes later it'll say 5 seconds left, then a half hour later it'll be back up to 2 hours remaining. Time Machine never gets past the "Preparing Backup..." stage. Last night it started backing up, I left the room for a few hours and when I came back, it was still preparing backup. I know this was the same backup session because the last successful backup is still December 16.

Macbook Pro 13" running significantly slower than usual!
I've had my Macbook Pro 13" for around 9 months now and It has been running great up until recently, where it seems to be running really slowly.
It takes quite a while to boot, and it seems that all graphics aren't loading correctly or quickly.
While opening Lunchpad, the icons can take up to 45 seconds to load, and Youtube does not seem to load correctly.
Even repairing disk permissions can take up to 1hr long.
I'm running the latest OS and all software is up to date. Ive only taken up around 30% of my hard drive space some of which has been partitioned for bootcamp.
Any ideas as to why this is happening would be appreciated.There are so many reasons for a Mac starting to slow down that it would take forever to figure it out. Take a look at these articles, it should help (it has for me):

Make sure Flash is up-to-date since it is a horrible drain on system performance. -

Try to start *Windows* in safe mode with networking enabled.
