Suddenly no input

I've a MacPro 2007, a X1900XT and a Dell U2140. All is fine as always, playing Spore...when there is no more video input and the monitor goes to sleep. Reboot, no change. Reboot, at last video signal is back.
What was wrong?

I must say the card works all the time, except when playing Spore. If it's not a bug with Spore and the card working harder than normal, it's time to clean it. Hope it's not frying.

    Every now and then ALL input devices stop working,ths is not temporary - a forced shut down is needed
    What happens is that I am happily working away when suddenly all input devices stop working with no warning, so the light goes off on my Wacom (Intuous 3) tablet, the keyboard and the apple trackpad  are not responded to i.e. the cursor stays where it was on the screen prevously and I am left with the only option to restart by holding down the power button

    If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. This procedure is a diagnostic  test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything suggested in this comment.
    Third-party system modifications are a common cause of usability problems. By a “system modification,” I mean software that affects the operation of other software — potentially for the worse. The procedure will help identify which such modifications you've installed, as well as some other aspects of the configuration that may be related to the problem.
    Don’t be alarmed by the seeming complexity of these instructions — they’re easy to carry out. Here's a brief summary: In each of two steps, you copy a line of text from this web page into a window in another application. You wait about a minute. Then you paste some other text, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page. The sequence is copy; paste; paste again. That's all there is to it. Details follow.
    You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken while booted in “normal” mode. If the system is now running in safe mode and is bootable in normal mode, reboot as usual.
    Below are instructions to enter UNIX shell commands. They do nothing but produce human-readable output. However, you need to think carefully before running any program at the behest of a stranger on a public message board. If you question the safety of the procedure suggested here — which you should — search this site for other discussions in which it’s been followed without any report of ill effects. If you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them.
    The commands will line-wrap or scroll in your browser, but each one is really just a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, and you can then copy it.
    Note: If you have more than one user account, Step 2 must be taken as an administrator. Ordinarily that would be the user created automatically when you booted the system for the first time. Step 1 should be taken as the user who has the problem, if different. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this paragraph doesn’t apply.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    When you launch Terminal, a text window will open with a line already in it, ending either in a dollar sign (“$”) or a percent sign (“%”). If you get the percent sign, enter “sh” and press return. You should then get a new line ending in a dollar sign.
    Step 1
    Triple-click anywhere in the line of text below on this page to select it:
    PB=/usr/libexec/PlistBuddy; PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; PF () { o=$($PB -c Print "$2" | awk -F'= ' \/$3'/{print $2}'); PR "$1"; }; PN () { [[ $o -eq 0 ]] || printf "\n%s: %s\n" "$1" $o; };{ system_profiler SPSoftwareDataType | sed '8!d;s/^ *//'; o=$(system_profiler SPDiagnosticsDataType | sed '5,6!d'); fgrep -q P <<< "$o" && o=; PR "POST"; o=$(( $(vm_stat | awk '/Pageo/{sub("\\.",""); print $2}')/256 )); [[ $o -gt 1024 ]] && printf "\nPageouts: %s MiB\n" $o; o=$(kextstat -kl | grep -v com\\.apple | cut -c53- | cut -d\< -f1); PR "Loaded extrinsic kernel extensions"; o=$(launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.apple|org\.(x|openbsd)|\.[0-9]+$/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic user agents"; o=$(launchctl getenv DYLD_INSERT_LIBRARIES); PR "Inserted libraries"; o=$(crontab -l); PR "User cron tasks"; o=$(cat /e*/lau*); PR "Global launchd configuration"; o=$(cat ~/.lau*); PR "Per-user launchd configuration"; PF "Global login items" /L*/P*/loginw* Path; PF "Per-user login items" L*/P*/*loginit* Name; PF "Safari extensions" L*/Saf*/*/E*.plist Bundle | sed 's/\..*$//;s/-[1-9]$//'; o=$(find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 \) | wc -l); PN "Restricted user files"; cd; o=$(find -L /S*/L*/E* {,/}L*/{A*d,Compon,Ex,In,Keyb,Mail/Bu,P*P,Qu,Scripti,Servi,Spo}* -type d -name Contents -prune | while read d; do ID=$($PB -c 'Print :CFBundleIdentifier' "$d/Info.plist"); ID=${ID:-No bundle ID}; egrep -qv "^com\.apple\.[^x]|Accusys|ArcMSR|ATTO|HDPro|HighPoint|driver\.stex|hp-fax|JMicron|microsoft\.MDI|print|SoftRAID" <<< $ID && printf '%s\n\t(%s)\n' "${d%/Contents}" "$ID"; done); PR "Extrinsic loadable bundles"; o=$(find /u*/{,*/}lib -type f -exec sh -c 'file -b "$1" | grep -qw shared && ! codesign -v "$1"' {} {} \; -print); PR "Unsigned shared libraries"; o=$(system_profiler SPFontsDataType | egrep "Valid: N|Duplicate: Y" | wc -l); PN "Font problems"; for d in {,/}L*/{La,Priv,Sta}*; do o=$(ls -A "$d"); PR "$d"; done; } 2> /dev/null | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 1 done'
    Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Then click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key after pasting.
    The command may take up to a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. Wait for the line "Step 1 done" to appear below what you entered. The output of the command will be automatically copied to the Clipboard. Paste into a reply to this message. No typing is involved in this step.
    Step 2
    Remember that you must be logged in as an administrator for this step. Do as in Step 1 with this line:
    PR () { [[ "$o" ]] && printf '\n%s:\n%s\n' "$1" "$o"; }; { o=$(sudo launchctl list | sed 1d | awk '!/0x|com\.(apple|openssh|vix\.cron)|org\.(amav|apac|calendarse|cups|dove|isc|ntp|post[fg]|x)/{print $3}'); PR "Loaded extrinsic daemons"; o=$(sudo defaults read com.apple.loginwindow LoginHook); PR "Login hook"; o=$(sudo crontab -l); PR "Root cron tasks"; o=$(syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail -n25 | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}'); PR "Log check"; } 2>&- | pbcopy; echo $'\nStep 2 done'
    This time you'll be prompted for your login password, which you do have to type. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. Type it carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. Heed that warning, but don't post it. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
    Note: Step 2 might not produce any output, in which case the Clipboard will be empty.
    You can then quit Terminal.
    To prevent confusion, I'll repeat: When you type your password in the Terminal window, you won't see what you're typing.
    Note: If you don’t have a login password, set one before taking Step 2. If that’s not possible, skip the step.
    Important: If any personal information, such as your name or email address, appears in the output of these commands, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    Remember, Steps 1 and 2 are all copy-and-paste — type only your password. Also remember to post the output.

  • Paypal confusion

    I've been pasting Paypal buttons into my web pages from
    snippets for years, and everything has worked great. I simply
    pasted the snippet in, selected the various input fields, and
    changed what was necessary. All of a sudden, my input fields are
    being inserted with additional numbers in them, and when the
    finished button is clicked on (in a trial buy) the customer is sent
    to the main Paypal page rather than the cart.
    I just download new paypal ecommerce stuff, and the webassist
    extensions, but that only seemed to complicate things. Now I have
    more that I don't understand.
    Can anyone tell me how to get these buttons, including form
    fields and selection menus, to work correctly again?
    Other strange things are happening also, but this would be a
    start.

    Try getting your PayPal buttons NOT ENCODED and see if that
    helps.

  • Tooltip note window showing even when shortDesc is not set?

    We've recently upgraded our WebCenter Portal to 11.1.1.6.3 using the latest bundle patch. I'm assuming it includes a newer ADF build as well.
    Suddenly on input components where shortDesc is not set, empty note windows started appearing.
    I've now added shortDesc attributes to all of them so the note window is no longer empty, but is there a way to stop the note windows from appearing at all?

    Funny you should say that. I finally figure out what the problem was. In our page we had included one of those JavaScript libraries (mootools in our case) to accomplish some tasks that aren't possible in ADF. This library was interfering somehow with ADF causing the empty tooltip. We have changed our JavaScript to use jQuery instead and the problem has stopped. In any case simply including the latest full mootools JavaScript makes the problem appear instantly.

  • Logic Pro X all of a sudden can't detect input from M-Audio Mobile Pre

    I was recording guitars when I had to step away for a while. I closed the lid on my MBP and left. When I came back, all of a sudden, Logic can't detect any inputs coming from my USB interface. I have tried everything from rebooting, switching to the other input on my interface, updating drivers, but nothing seems to work. What's worse is whenever I start Logic with my interface plugged in, Logic gets stuck at Checking MIDI Drivers. If I unplug my interface, Logic would start fine, but if I plug my interface back, Logic won't detect it.
    I am using the M-Audio's input while I am using the Built-In Output on the MBP (I don't have monitor speakers). It was working fine before.
    I am using a Mid-2012 MBP 15" on OSX Mountain Lion and an M-Audio MobilePre MKII USB interface.

    In this exact order
    1) Unplug MobilePre
    2) Remove it's drivers using the uninstall routine that is in the Driver DMG image ...
    Note: If you get a message about it cannot uninstall.. Restart your Mac and then try to uninstall again...
    3) Restart your Mac after you have uninstalled the drivers..
    4) Reinstall latest drivers......
    5) Restart Mac..
    6) Wait until Mac has restarted and then plug in MobilePre...
    It should then be correctly recognized and work....

  • I have to input a password in order to log in each time I turn on my Macbook Pro Santa Rosa under Mountain Lion. Now my built-in keyboard suddenly doesn't respons at all. And the bluetooth function seems to activate automatically even though I turn it off

    I have to input a password to log in to my Macbook Pro Santa Rosa under Mountain Lion. Now suddenly the built-in keyboard doesn't work at all so I cannot use my computer. I also notice that the bluetooth function is activated automatically even though I turn it off. It looks for an external keyboard. Please help me out. Many thanks!

    I have the exact same problem trying to use the Remote app on both my iPhone 3gs and iPad 2 with either my Mac or ATV2.  My Remote app used to work on my phone - I can't recall if I ever actually used it with my iPad, but when I tried today, I got all the same results as you did (on both iPad, and then iPhone).  I  was using my ATV2 to play music from iTunes on my Mac and wanted to use the Remote app, but it would not connect to either device no matter what I did.

  • Firefox and Thunderbird are suddenly not accepting keyboard input

    The problem suddenly arose while I was browsing.
    I have the same issue on all program's based on the Gecko engine and I confirmed them so far in Firefox, waterfox, instantbird, thunderbird and fossamail. However chromium / windows / basically everythign n
    To fix it I tried the following:
    Restarting firefox
    Restarting firefox in savemode
    Rebooting
    Changing the keyboard layout in windows
    Using a different keyboard
    Again rebooting
    Pressing F7 to check for caret mode which was disabled
    pressing winkey + F9 (Whatever that does)
    I am running windows 8.1(x64)

    Solved, Changing the keyboard layout again and rebooting fixed it. I tried using the on screen keyboard which worked so I changed the keyboard layout again and rebooted and now it works just fine. I still wonder what caused a Gecko wide issue like this?

  • Suddenly no mic input level thru mbox

    I have been recording vocals successfully in GB 2.0.1 through an mbox. All of a sudden, with seemingly no change in anything, I'm getting no level when I sing into the mic and record (I just get a "chunk" with a straight line as opposed to the wavy audio line, if you know what i mean). The mbox is still offered as an input choice in GB preferences, the digidesign manager program seems to be working. I've tried opening various songs in GB and recording to vocal tracks where previously i've had no problem - no levels.
    And, when I record through my iMic it works (but at a lower quality)
    why would the mbox all of a sudden stop working? any ideas? all is the same as far as I can tell, phantom power's on, levels same, on "mic" setting, correct channel. I've tried quitting, restarting the computer etc
    any insights would be greatly appreciated!
    D

    Hi Gerald and Scott,
    I"m sorry for the delay - I've been out of town. Thank you both for your replies. As it turns out i think my mbox actually died. Its in for repair now...so we'll see.
    I am interested in the driver you mentioned, Gerald. You use this instead of the Core audio driver? I was wondering what is it that you like about this driver in particular? Also, do you pro tools by chance?
    thanks

  • Firefox (v. 25.0.1) suddenly won't let me input in Japanese. How do I fix this?

    For some reason, Firefox suddenly won't let me input in Japanese. (I am using version 25.0.1.) Why has this happened and what can I do to fix it?

    I think this problem relates to an issue that I have raised here:
    https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/978034
    If so, it is to do with the limiting of input sources to your default device in Firefox 25.0.1. Are you using OSX, and do you have multiple keyboard layouts in your language toolbar drop down?

  • Logic Pro X with ZoomH4 all of the sudden input -db's?

    Hi,
    I've been using my ZoomH4 rather effortlessly as a external microphone with logic via USB,  but recently I plugged it in, selecting "USB Audio I/F" as usual, starting up logic and creating a new track with H4 as input. I noticed when trying to first record that the metronome was playing via the Zoom instead of via my computer (I normally have my headphones plugged into my laptop to hear the metronome and any audio). this isn't normal but then i noticed that i could barely hear any audio because my input automatically recorded at negative db's (as high as 50 or 60) so i could barely hear the recording or play back. this had nothing to do with my mic level on the zoom, it just showed up like this in logic suddenly:
    notice how the input is at -28 db's. i tried to adjust it manually but it wouldn't budge and there must be an issue because i am unable to hear the audio with my headphones pluged into laptop now...is this a user error? i did the same steps i always do when starting up logic and using zoomH4. does anybody know what's going on, did i switch a setting accidentally or something? i'm not the most computer saavy so if this is an obvious fix, apologies for my ineptitude. any help is appreciated. thx.
    -maggie

    Have you gone into Logic's Preferences/Audio and set your Input and Output device.
    Input should be the Zoom and Output should be Built-in Audio.
    The Mac's System Settings have little to do with Logic, Logic has it's own set of audio preferences that are independent of the Mac's settings.
    Also, you may want to look at these to forum posts I started.. the las Logic update, 10.0.5 does some "funny" things with quite a number of USB devices.

  • Audigy SE - mic input suddenly stopped working

    .Audigy SE - mic input suddenly stopped working6 I use a Creative Audigy SE sound card and it has worked fine since the day I bought it until recently the mic input stopped working.
    Fair enough, I tested with spare headset in case headset was faulty. No workie. I tested headset in laptop - workie.
    So I bought a replacement card, no workie. I get sound out, but cannot get a signal on my mic when connected.
    I have troubleshooted this extensi'vely (checking the settings in the creative panel, windows control panel, the mics mute switch is not on) and have run out of leads.
    edit: i have also updated drivers and tried a different pci slot.
    Message Edited by rdegan on 07-4-2009 0:47 [email protected]

    So after my mic input stopped working on my Soundblaster Audigy, I have done the following troubleshooting:
    - checked headset works in another computer;
    - bought a brand new sound card;
    - checked all driver settings for an accidental mute;
    - updated sound card drivers;
    - ensured on-board audio is disabled;
    - formatted windows XP;
    - Run XP control pan audio diagnostics.
    Still I cannot get sound on my Mic input. My sound output to headphoes is fine. Can anyone offer any other trouble shooting?

  • After closing a VI, and analog input suddenly turns a device on.

    Background:
    I have a LabVIEW 7.1, a Real-Time controller and FPGA card. The FPGA vi that I have is mostly IO. One of the IO's on the FPGA is the Analog output that would be controlled by my Real-Time controller that would send 0-10V to a fan motor.
    Problem:
    While running a test Real-Time VI that opens and controls my FPGA VI through a Read/Write, whatever I'm controlling works fine and in this VI I am not sending any IO to the fan motor. After I close that VI, suddenly, my fan motor gets turned on. Why would this input suddenly send a signal, become active, whatever you want to call it?
    Thank you in advance for any assistance.
    - Con

    Hi Con,
    Even if you are using a simple RT VI which is only doing reads/writes to digital lines the FPGA code still has a control or constant wired into the analog output node. So, even if you are not explicitly controlling the analog output line through the RT VI it will still write a value based on the control/indicator wired into that analog output node in the FPGA VI. What is the value of that control/constant for the analog output node (on the FPGA VI)? You will want to set that value to 0 (on the FPGA VI) to make sure that there is no voltage written out unless you control it via the RT VI.
    The strange part about this issue is that the fan comes on after the FPGA VI has been closed via the RT VI. Right now I don't have an explanation for that. Sometimes there is a floating voltage on the analog output line when no VI is controlling it. However, this should be floating and should taper off after a while. Is this what's happening or is it a repeatable voltage value every time? I have tried to reproduce this issue but I don't see the same behavior.
    Try these things that I have discussed above and let me know what you find out.

    Brooks W.
