I've been using WMP fine (Intel Imac) until today. Now it won't play files...I'm either told it's the wrong format or it just hangs there, says it's connecting. I've deleted it, restarted the Imac, and reinstalled, and it's still not working. Thoughts on what I should do??? Thanks.

I have never purchased or been a "licensed user of Popwire" at all. I just downloaded the .dmg file, unpacked it and followed the installation instructions. Popwire could not compete with Flip4Mac if the player components cost money - so they don't cost a dime. Bottom line, Popwire beat Flip4Mac to the punch in releasing a universal version of the WMV player component for Quicktime - trust me, I know - I'm a beta tester for F4M. Granted, the Popwire solution doesn't have browser support yet, but it runs native on downloaded files - and F4M doesn't.
Here's what I do:
Default open WMV files using Quicktime (w/the free Popwire import/export components installed in my QT library). Works fine for playing.
If I want to export WMV encoded projects, I have QTPro, so I simply select "save as" from the QT menu and save them to an output format Quicktime can read and therefor edit or whatever to my heart's desire. Or you can simply edit directly from the QTPro player without any initial saving to an alternative format.
If I'm lazy, I just drop smaller WMVs into iSquint, convert the thing to an Mp4 and go that route.

ITunes Seem to Have Suddenly Stopped Communicating With the CD/DVD Burner

Hello, I wonder if anybody can help - my itunes application seems to have suddenly stopped communicating with my laptop's cd/dvd burner
(Generic Name (E: H - T-S D D A S - 20N ATA Device)).
About 2 years ago, I have experienced a similar problem, but was able to resolve it by downloading 64-bit compatible GEAR drivers to my system. However, the problem has re-appeared when I have updated to iTunes Version 10.1. Funny enough, the cd/dvd burner started getting recognized again when I updated to iTunes Version 10.2, but halfway through me burning a large playlist to multiple cds has suddenly stopped recognizing the cd/dvd burner again, and has never "resolved itself" ever since.
I have tried multiple approaches to solving this issue, including completely re-installing itunes software and completely re-installing GEAR drivers, but nothing works. I have even tried uninstalling GEAR drivers completely, as I read that it worked for someone on one of the similar forums, but that didn't work either.
My itunes diagnostics runs all the points of the cd/dvd drive check successfully, except for the last point (Can Not Read Audio CD). Here's what the diagnostics summary looks like:

I have noticed that the diagnostics summary containes a suggestion to update firmware of my laptop's cd/dvd drive, but currently there are no such firmware updates available.
Another frustrating issue that I ran into was trying to convey this issue to Apple Technical Support via e-mail using the Express Lane for the troubleshooting issues. I really fail to understand why I am being asked for the "hardware serial number" when I'm clearly choosing the categories for "iTunes/CD-DVD Import Issues" which are software, not hardware, categories! This prevents me from being able to simply send the description of my problem to the correct Apple Support department, and does not let me do that even when I enter my itunes' Serial Number, which can be found in the diagnostics summary provided above.
Much Thanks to anyone who can provide any kind of helpful advice, even if it's just on how to be able to convey this problem to Apple Support via e-mail!

Is that true? Or do you in fact have a Windows user account with full administrative rights?
(It's possible that a permission may have gone astray in your usual user account, which might be causing the burning issues.)

Or you moved one of the sliders with shift key pressed.

ITunes + Quicktime refuses to let my Vista run mfpmp.exe with WMP

After I upgraded my iTunes + Quicktime, I can no longer play like half of my mp3s in Windows Media Player (11.0.6001.7008). Like half of my mp3s in WMP have the x inside red circle error next to the mp3 name & when I click on it, it says ""Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."

I know the files are not corrupt because they play fine on my Compaq computer which has the same exact music files, only difference is the WMP version on my Compaq computer is like 11.0.8 I think.
I already tried the Basic & Full versions of K-lite Codec package & my WMP still only plays about half of my library.
I uninstalled everything Apple related on my Vaio. Then tried to play my unplayable mp3s, & they all play with no errors! I reinstalled iTunes & Quicktime & the whole Apple package thing on their site, & WMP refuses to play like half my mp3 library again =(
Something about iTunes, Bonjour, Apple Software Update, Apple Mobile Device Support, Apple Application Support, or Quicktime makes Windows Media Player not play right or utilize codecs right even though I have WMP as the default player. Only when I uninstall everything Apple related, then WMP plays correctly again.
I noticed that when I have nothing Apple related installed, then when WMP plays the affected mp3s, the application Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE runs from the C:\Windows\System32 folder. But when I have anything Apple installed, then WMP refuses to run that Media Foundation Protected Pipeline EXE (mfpmp.exe)!!!!! Is there a fix to this?? Something within the Apple files is preventing mfpmp.exe to run which results in the codec error.

Your problem is likely to be with Vista / WMP not so much Apple's iTunes/QuickTime...
1. When you install iTunes (or any other media player for that matter) it will associate the .mp3 mime type to play in that media player. (Why would you want to use WiMP instead of iTunes anyway?)
2. I'm guessing WMP can't launch the executable for some reason if the mime type is not set in Windows for WMP to handle the file type (it should not be dependent on this, but dependencies run deep in Windows, hence the many headaches for users).
3. You should be able to set the mime type for .mp3 files to be associated with WMP in the preferences/properties of either WMP or QuickTime.

5. iTunes should still be able to play .mp3 files even if you associate the .mp3 mime type with WMP, cause it rightly doesn't care about the dependency, although it just won't find the .mp3 files automatically - you'll have to manually add the .mp3 files to your iTunes library if you've associated them with WMP.
6. Upgrade to Win7 or better yet, switch to MacOS and you won't have the problem to begin with.

Try booting to the Recovery drive, running Disk Utility and Repair disk and Repair Permissions.
1. Reboot and immediately hold down command and R (two keys).
2. When you see the screen shown on this page, select Disk Utility and continue.
3. When DU is running, select the hard drove on the left, First Aid and Repair Disk.
4. After Repair Disk, click Repair Permissions.
Quit DU and restart.

Just responded to this in another thread (note we used Captivate 7 so it might be a different error).
We found that when we created files with embedded swf files that existed ABOVE widgets in the timeline, when someone else tried to open our file it broke/we got the runtime error. The original person could still open it for a time, but eventually the cache would clear and they couldn't.
However, if we ensured swf files are BELOW widgets in the source files, it didn't break. In fact, if we found one that was breaking and got the author to move the swf file on the timeline, it would start working for others.

Time Machine may be using the disk space - if you have Time Machine enabled and not the backup drive connected, TM will make local snapshots, if you have free disk space. See Pondini's webpage for more information: Time Machine - Questions 30. What are Local Snapshots?
I disable these local snapshots on my portable macs, to be sure, how much space really is free.

Problems syncing n96 with wmp vista home

i'm using usb cable to sync n96 with my musiuc library in wmp. ivew tried using the nokia software but this doesnt do the random sync format i like. occasionally it works but more often than not wmp doesnt show the device? nokia ovi doesnt help too and my previous nokia disc has gone walkies whivh had an option of "sync with wmp" on the pc suite. im using vista home premuium on laptop btw.

Step by step then
1) When you plug your phone into the cable a message should appear on the phone listing 4 modes, select media transfer
2) Windows should recognise that a new device has been plugged in and display a message as such
3) When you open Media Player and select the sinc thab you should have a choice of 2 (3 if a memory card is inserted) n96 devices to choose from

Another user just has a similar issue tonight and I advised him to go to the below Apple support link to see if the password was recognized there, which eventually resolved his username/passowrd issue. Give it a try and see if it works.

You can disable the Adobe Reader plugin in Firefox (Tools > Add-ons > Plugins) and use the external Adobe Reader application or Preview application instead.

Mac suddenly stopped communicating with LAN devices, but internet access still OK.

My iMac has suddenly stopped communicating with my wireless printer and my blu-ray player (DLNA). Both have worked well for the past 3-4 weeks since I set up a new wireless router (Cisco EA4500).
Troubleshooting so far:
Printer Function: My wife's MacAir and my iPhone both print wirelessly to the printer. [OK]
2nd Printer connected to Mac via USB. [OK]
Blu-Ray Player Function: System is able to reach the internet (YouTube) via the wireless router. [OK]
Mac Function:
Internet access. [OK]
PRAM and SMC resets: [nothing]
Restarted "Playback" media server software for blu-ray (DLNA) server. [nothing]
Printer Setup: I have deleted and re-added the wireless printer and reset printer system. Mac will "see" the printer on the network, but cannot communicate with it. [nothing]
Attempts to use Epson Utility: Connection Error
Router Function:
Checked Firmware. Most recent version prior to the "Cisco Cloud" fiasco - my router did not auto-upgrade and was not involved in the most recent firmware upgrade.
I just cannot get the Mac to see any other hardware on the local wifi network, but the mac has no problem connecting to the internet.
Any ideas?

Happened to me.Drove me crazy. Turns out, iMac can fix itself.
Go to system preferences then network and select the connection (wireless or ethernet) that you want to use.At the bottom of the box you'll find "Assist me". click that and follow the prompts. it will likely telly you that your settings are screwed up (surprise) and ask if you want to fix them or let DHCP do it. Just let DHCP do it.

I use USB portable speakers from Trust, but they don't work with iTunes, but they do with wmp... any tips?
