Suddenly no sound coming from my iMac.

I was listening to iTunes and all of a sudden the sound stopped. I have external speakers hooked up. I restarted, still no sound from external speakers, although startup chime sounds through internal speaker. I know my external speakers are working, as I tried using Magic Jack and got full sound. Please help.

Take a look at your sound preferences in your system preferences.  Click on the output tab and make sure you have your external speakers selected.

  • Suddenly no sound coming from HP Pavilion 500-339 Desktop

I've had this computer less than a month without any issues. From a couple days ago there is no sound coming from any source (various speakers, headphone jack directly into computer).
I have checked everything, i.e., checked all the external cables, used the Windows diagnostics and checked all sound devices, volume settings, checked for mute etc. No issues have been detected with the audio hardware and drivers.
I've also done a system restore, removed recent Windows updates (within the week), uninstalled and reinstalled the IDT high-def audio drivers and still nothing.  Every time I do a diagnostic it says the audio is working properly yet no sound comes out for anything.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hello @Brian13,
Welcome to the HP Forums, I hope you enjoy your experience! To help you get the most out of the HP Forums I would like to direct your attention to the HP Forums Guide First Time Here? Learn How to Post and More.
I understand that your audio on your HP Pavilion 500-339 Desktop PC is not working. I am providing you with an HP Support document: Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 8), which you can use to restore your computer back to a point in time where your sound worked correctly.
If the Microsoft System Restore does not resolve your sound issue I would like you to use the HP Support document: Using Recovery Manager to Restore Software and Drivers (Windows 8) to put the original audio driver back in your computer. As this is the driver that came with your computer it should work correctly.
If the above steps do not fix your sound issue I think we should try a backup and recovery of your computer. To backup your personal information and ensure that it is not lost I would like you to review and follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Backing Up Your Files (Windows 8), which will ensure your personal files are up to date.
***WARNING!! If you want to keep any emails or bookmarks/favorites you will want to back those up as well as I do not believe they are backed up in the HP Backup process.
Next, I would like you to review and follow the steps set out in the HP Support document: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8), which will you through recovering your computer back to factory settings.
*** IMPORTANT - Your personal files such as libraries, personalization settings, user accounts, and desktop themes are permanently removed. As well the computer settings are returned to the defaults (the way it was when it came from the factory). All apps and software that were installed on the computer when it came from the factory are reinstalled, and their settings are reset to the defaults. Additionally, software, apps, programs, and everything that you have installed or saved on the computer are permanently removed.

  • No sound coming from my iMac, can't play music in iTunes and can't watch videos.

Im going to explain everthing from the beginning so people bear with me. Last night i turned on my computer to watch some old footage i have.It wouldnt play, then when i tried to open the file this message poped up ( documents could not open unknown error -101). Then i went to play some audio tracks i create, they also wouldnt play for some reason. When i tried to open that file the same message popped up.So then i went into itunes to play the same track it still no sound. Not only was there no sound in itunes, but it wouldnt play at all. So im thinking maybe i need some updates, so i checked for that. I had two up dates, i installed them. Then i restarted my computer everything was working fine now. Now this mourning i turned on my computer again, the samething is happening all over again. I went into system preference to check my sounds everything seems to be in order, except the mute box is checked and it wont let me uncheck it. Also when i hit the sound key on the keyboard, the sound is all the way up but there is a circle with a line going threw the middle of it.I cant adjust the sound at all. I also tried to go into disk utility to see if i needed some kind of repairs that didnt work. I would appreciate it if someone can give me some advice to correct my problem, i am in desperate need. Thankyou in advance.

    Hi,
I just updated to version 7, and many of the songs I downloaded previously now have an exclamation point next to the checkbox. What does this mean? When I click on one of the songs to play it, it states the song cannot be used because the original file cannot be found. Would you like to locate it? When I type in the name of the song, I don't get anything. Can you please help?

  • My sound coming from the internet on my MacBook Air is not working!

I bought this MacBook Air a month ago is the new one, everything was working well but suddenly the sound coming from the internet stop working.
My computer sound is working perfectly is just when I want to watch a video or listed a song from youtube talk on skype isnt working at all.
When I press the volume button i can hear it.
Can someone tell me what can it be?

Hopefully one of these steps should solve the problem.
    1. System Preference > Sound > Output > Internal Speakers
        Highlight  Internal Speakers / Headphones
Make sure Mute is not enabled.
    2. Remove the headphone.
If you see red light in the headphone port, plug the headphone
in and out of the port 5 or 6 times to flip the microswitch inside.
Sound output may be stuck in the digital mode.
    3. Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
        Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
    4. Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup
        Audio Devices window
        Side Bar
        Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so, uncheck it.

  • Sound coming from iMac

I bought my iMac 27" this past December.  Recently I started hearing a stuttering sound coming from the unit.  It sounds like a fan, but I'm not sure.  This happens sporadically, in sleep mode, or while in use.  Its not an audible sound, put the sound of a part moving or struggling to move. Has anyone experienced this?

    cujaflow wrote:
What i meant is that it is not a system sound or alert or sound coming from the speakers.  I apologize, that is confusing.  In sleep it just sounds like a moving piece sputters, then it stops moving and is silent.
Still confusing me.  Can you hear it during sleep (which I doubt) or just at the time of going to sleep?
If the latter and while awake it could be a fan or the drive.  iStat Pro will give you some fan speeds and temperatures.  But unless the fan is running at a high speed due to some higher temperature (which would both be indicated by iStat Pro) it doesn't sound like what you are describing.  Of course iStat Pro is a good thing for you to have anyhow.
The fan bearing may be starting to go, or fan blade sligtly rubbing on it's housing.  These can happen and by your description don't sound too serious (...yet).  Similarly for the hard drive's bearing.

  • Loud Grumbling (Stomach Rumbling-Like) Sounds coming from iMac?

    Hello,
I bought a 27 inch iMac around the beginning of June and have been impressed with it ever since. As a frequent customer of Apple's I have purchased alot of Apple's products over the years including 'The New Ipad', 2 iPhone 5, Apple TV and some older generation iPhones.
When I first purchased this iMac i noticed a small sound comming from my iMac. I ignored the sound as I am a previous PC user and was used to the loud Computer sounds. The sound exculated more and more until nowit is easily heard and I can even hear it a couple of feet away from my computer. I can also hear it even if my display is off (I can even hear it now). Its very iritating and can only be closely descirbed as a Stomach-Like rumbling noise. I began to worry that this may become a bigger problem like Hard Drive failure or some other types of problem as these sounds do tend to warn me and so took the precuation of taking my iMac into the Apple Store, White City, Westfields in London. The technician there ran some quick tests and tried to find the sound however above the music in the store and the hastle of people going forth and back, was unable to hear it. We asked her if she could take it inside at the back of the store which she did. She ran a few test (Note that we werent with her when she went to the back of the store) and ran a few tests one where she maxed out the CPU and tried to see if any fault was visible or heard. She was unable to locate the sound and therefore had no choice but to return it to us. (Also note that we have an extended 3 year Apple Care Agrement).
I was dissapointed and hoped maybe it may stop when i set it up again at home but was unhappy when the sound began to reoccur. This happens often however once it begans its a while until it stops and can be very iritating especialy when working infront of it or trying to focus on some work on screen. I just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions or any other solutions experiences like me with this peculiar sounds because as far as I can rememebr paying over £1,600 and paying around £135 for an extended waurentee and being a loyal customer who has purchased alot of apples products I would like my product to be as described on the website. Noiseless (Or Silent). I hope that theres a simple explanation maybe a hard drive fault (As it happend in 2009) and if so i hope Apple has the decency to recall its products or hard drives for new ones (faultless i hope) otherwise i think that this could trigger some legal matter into the description of the supposingly 'noisless iMac'.
Also I noticed that many others have this problem and hope that maybe even an apple techinicain can help because this does effect my thoguhts about Apple and i hope that sometime, somehow someone will help.
    Thank You
I have not tampered with anything on the system by neither opening it or tryign to fix it myself and therfore not liable.

I went to Apple told them there was a problem. They said it was the fan after we heard the noise. So they took it in and said taht they would replae all fans. After 3 days they call to say the iMac is ready. So i go in and they tell me that the problem was with the optical drive and the optical drive fan so they replaced all the fans and the optical hard drive.
Took it home and......problem started all over again. So far they've replaced the Hard Drive (2TB), all 4 fans and the optical drive and the issue is still not solved.... This is becomign really annoying and I'm fed up because ifits taking so much of my time, money and my work because I dont have to the iMac to use and im using a Sony Laptop instead. Any Suggestions please??
    Thank you

  • Duck like sounds coming from PB

has anybody experienced a duck like sound coming from the front of there PB? I dont know if it's my HD or superdrive.
And now my PB is freezing on me every 15min. I did a clean install, and it's still crashing.
G4, Powerbook and iMac Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Hi, zeronine, and welcome to Apple Discussions. Your OS does contain an indignant "quack!!" sound file, but choosing to have that used as one of the standard system sounds (as in "Stop! You don't want to do that!") is the only way I know of to get a duck inside a Tibook.
I would guess that you're hearing your hard drive, but I've sure never heard any hard drive noise described as "duck like" before.

  • Sound coming from both speakers and headphones at the same time in probook 4440s

I have a Probook 4440s with windows 8 pro(64 bit) with IDT high definition codec installed. Yesterday when i was playing some songs i noticed that the sound was coming from both headphones and speakers even when my headphones are plugeed in and my lappy was having no such problems a few hours earliers while i was watching a movie. Please help..

It may be because you have both the internal speakers and headphones enabled at the sametime on your laptop. This might just happen automatically when you plug your headphones in. You need to manage your audio devices on your laptop.
Go to Control Panel> Hardware and Sounds> Manage Audio Devices> Playback Tab (which should already be selected)
In the playback tab there should be a list of all the audio devices you are using on your computer. Right click on the one you don't want to use and click disable. This should stop the sound coming from that audio device.
Remember: You will need to enable that audio device if you want to listen to sound through it again. Your internal speakers won't work once you enable them again. This might also be the case with your headphones. You may also have to do this every time your plug in a device or once you restart your computer.
Another note: Sometimes disabled devices will not show up on the audio device list so once you disable a device it will dissappear. This is an easy fix too. Just right click on an audio device and make sure show disabled devices and show disconnected devices is checked.
    I hope this helps.
(I was using a computer with Windows XP to explain the instructions but it should be similar with your Windows Operating System. You may however have to play around a little on your computer because it may be slightly different)

  • I put a case on my iPod touch 5 and now there is no sound coming from the speaker.  The head phones work though.  I called Apple Support and the 2 people I spoke with seemed baffled.  Has this happened to anyone and how do I resolve this?

I put a Griffin case on my daughter's iPod Touch 5 and now there is no sound coming from the speaker.  There is sound when we use the headphones.  Is there a mute function that I may have switched on and if so how do I turn it off?
It was a gift bought by her Godparents in January and I live in the islands so I can't just drive it back to the store to have them look @ it!
Called Apple Support and spoke to 2 people who seemed baffled and who could only suggest I reset the device.  Who h has not helped.
    HELP!!!!!!!

    - Try cleaning out/blowing out the headphone jack. Try inserting/removing the plug a dozen times or so.
Try the following to rule out a software problem
    - Reset the iPod. Nothing will be lost
Reset iPod touch: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Reset all settings
Go to Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset All Settings.
All your preferences and settings are reset. Information (such as contacts and calendars) and media (such as songs and videos) aren’t affected.
    - Restore from backup
    - Restore to factory settings/new iPod.
    - Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store. Seems you have a bad headphone jack.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
Apple will exchange your iPod for a refurbished one for this price. They do not fix yours.
    Apple - iPod Repair price
A third-party place like the following will replace the jack for less. Google for more.

  • Has anyone had this issue? There is a fine white powder (no coke jokes) covering anything plastic in my apartment. It's coming from my iMac, I discovered yesterday. For 6 months this mysterious powder has been in my abode, probably in my lungs, too.

Has anyone had this issue? There is a strange fine white powder covering anything plastic in my apartment. It's coming from my iMac. It's a year and a half old (out of warranty). After 6 months of trying to figure this out, I found out yesterday when my local Apple Sore offered to fix it for $700. I want to know how toxic this powder is, since I've been breathing it for 6 months. A carcinogen I'll bet.

If an Apple employee (repair tech) doesn't know what it is.............
Suggest that you do a Google search for the "guts" of your model/generation iMac.  See what the "guts" are made of and post back your findings.
We are just ordinary users like yourself that help out here.  I for one, would be very interested to know if your iMac has a "monkey on it's back."
    Sorry, I couldn't resist.

It's likely your fan,  It always runs on a MBA.  Mine is very quiet, others report some noise - here is one link.  There are lots of others.

Hi, and welcome to Apple Discussions.
Have you tried resetting the PMU?
I'm not optimistic that this will help any more than the procedures you've already tried, but it won't hurt to try.
Do you still have your OS 9 installation? If so, try booting into OS 9 and see if the problems with the audio are happening there, too. If so, you can bet it's a hardware problem.
How big is your hard drive and how much space remains available on it? If you don't have your OS 9 installation in order to check out whether it's a hardware problem and you have enough available hard drive space, you may want to try an Archive and Install of the OS in order to make sure it isn't an OS X system-wide problem. If that doesn't do it, you could back up your hard drive and restore your software.
All of this may just be spinning your wheels, but it's all stuff you can try before shelling out a lot of money for repairs.

  • Every time I scroll, there's a clicking sound coming from the top left corner of my macbook

Similar to the clicking sound of my hard drive, every time I scroll, or whenever there is any sort of animation on my screen, there's a similar clicking sound coming from the top left corner on my , around the area where the microphone is. I know the hard drive is at the bottom right corner, so is this a graphics card issue or am I overlooking the issue?

It is better to take the MBP to the Apple store for evaluation.
They have the diagnostic tools to make sure that there is no problem with the computer.

  • Whenever I use the trackpad on my 17" Macbook Pro (2010 model) there is a small, trebly processor sound coming from within the enclosure.

Whenever I use my trackpad, there is a whirring, trebly sound coming from within the computer itself. It happens also when webpages are loaded or programs are compiled, but not when I use the keyboard or when the computer is in disuse. It has become louder over time, and it is obvious that when the computer senses input from the trackpad and must translate it, the sound is produced. Is there any way to reset the firmware or an option on the Settings menu that could perhaps help? I am concerned that it is a symptom of a larger problem. Thanks.

The question mark means the computer cannot find a bootable volumes so can;t do anything, That, combined with annoying sounds, strongly suggests a failed hard drive.
You can ask a "genius" at an Apple Rtail Store to test it but I'm pretty sure the drive is kaput. I'm hoping you had your data backed up.
