Suddenly no .XMP are made when processing RAW photos

Since yesterday, suddenly no .XMP files are being made (or at least I can't see them anymore(!??) when processing RAW (.CR2) photos.
How is this possible?
Is this a real porblem?
How can I solve it?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Erna Koelman

Thanks for your quick reply, Barbara!
I don't see the three-lined square you are referring too. But I suddenly found the solution myself. I realised that I had openen the last pictures holding the 'Alt', which means not opening the original but a copy. Turning back to not using the 'Alt', the . xmp files are coming back.
Next question: in a workshop I followed some time ago, the trainer told us that .xmp have no use at all, and could be deleted immediately after processing the raw picture. Isn't that a strange advice? What would go wrong if you would indeed always delete the .xmp files?

  • White screen when processing RAW

Hi, since installing 10.5, I have a problem when processing RAW files from my Pentax K10d. If I press the 'enhance' button, or attempt to sharpen, the photo disappears. The only way to get it back is to reprocess the RAW file. I have rebuilt the library, thumbnails etc by pressing apple+alt on iPhoto startup. I have also used BatChmod on the iPhoto library.
Could anybody please help me, as I am really cheesed off

I am not sure if this is directly linked to 10.5 because as soon as I installed iLife 08 I had this same issue on Tiger. I have also done a clean install of 10.5 and iLife 08 done all the updates and still have this issue...
None of the fixes has solved this and my pictures are Nikon RAW - very annoying...

When importing raw photos from Nikon D90 aperture seems to automatically adjust exposure darker. why? How can I stop this?

This is typical of the default NEF RAW conversion of Aperture and the best thing you can do is set up a few presets to apply to all of your RAW images to get a tone curve and colors that is pleasing to you as a default. The in camera JPEGs / embedded JPEGs (that you first see during import) are treated to the Nikon "Picture Control" settings that are set on the camera - the RAW's as interpreted by Aperture are not.
I have written extensively and even have a few downloadable presets on my site - look for NEF...

  • Elements 9 does not accept or process RAW photo images taken with a Nikon D7000.

Adobe elements 9 does not accept or process RAW photo images taken with a Nikon D7000. I called support for a download patch and they said I had to purchase a support package or essentially purchase Elements 10. I can't believe that Adobe would not have a download patch for this problem as my elements 9 is not very old. When I try to do the updates Adobe says the serial number of the elements 9 is not accepted for download or support even though I purchased it and registered it with Adobe.
Is there any solution to this?
    Thanks.

Thank you but still having a problem. I go to the edit menu>>help>>update>>check for updates and an update to 9.03 comes up as the only update, no camera raw update. It starts to download and then stops and says to close organizer and/or editor then starts back up and stops again saying "error installing this update. Close and contact customer support". When I called customer support earlier that's when they said they don't support 9 only v. 10 and did I want to buy support or a new program v10 to get camera raw processing for the Nikon D7000 RAW. Apparently I'm doing something wrong in the update procedure but don't know what. The camera raw version is 6.5 in my elements and understand that camera raw v. 6.7 is the update to process the images. Any ideas? If I uninstall and reinstall does the serial number still work on the reinstall?
    Thanks for help.

  • Inaccurate color when processing RAW in Lightroom

When I try to edit photos I took with my Nikon Coolpix P330 in RAW format, I notice that areas that have a reddish color come out over saturated. In the same picture in JPEG format, the reddish colors are displayed correctly. Colors that are purple in real life and in the JPEG file show up as blue. Many of the other colors such as white and green show up correct in the JPEG and the RAW file. I have already calibrated my monitor though Windows 7.
What do I do so that Lightroom renders the colors accurately when I edit RAW files? What are some easy ways to get accurate colors and/or desired colors when I need them? Thank you.

As already pointed out, any rendering of an in-camera JPEG is the choice the manufacturer has made when it is processed by the camera. Some cameras allow these decisions to be influenced with camera menu choices but this is not the forum for that. one option for you if you want to make sure your camera sees color correctly is to build a profile for that specific camera so that when you take a picture of a red apple, the camera sees the proper color red. To do this, you need a tool such as the X-Rite Color Checker Passport and their software. You photograph the target, process the image in the software and you get a profile that you can apply to all images shot with that particular camera. This works best on RAW images. Also, this is only half the story.
Once your camera sees color correctly, your displays need to be able to properly reproduce that color. Have your profiled your display? If not, this is likely where the problem exists. Monitors are set to reproduce color in an sRGB color space. More expensive monitors can reproduce color in a larger color space (Adobe RGB) but over time, the accuracy of the reproduction drifts and often they start life out just a bit off. To know you screen will reproduce color accurately, you need to calibrate it. Once again, this requires a piece of hardware that reads the color patch being displayed on the screen and some software to build a profile that Lightroom and Photoshop can use to display the colors in your RAW and/or JPEG files. Trying to debug any other color issues is impossible if the accuracy of the color reproduction capabilities of the monitor are unknown.
If you have more than one screen, calibrate them both. Once that is done, the color should at least, right or wrong, be the same on both of them. This is especially true if the difference is showing up because you edit on one screen and then later, view them on another. As an example, the monitor you use to edit your images may be off. As you edit, you are compensating for the error. Then, you bring that same image up on another screen that is more accurate, and it looks all wrong. If you have not already, calibrate your scree(s) and then look at the problem image and see if it has changed. There are a number of monitor calibrators out there (X-Rite, Spyder, etc). I like the Color Monki Smile and it can calibrate your screen as well as your iPad/Android tablets.

  • Does anyone know what job(s) is/are called when processing applications ??

I need to find out what job(s) is/are called in BPC 5.1, when I tick the box marked "Process Application" (in Admin Manager) and then hit "Modifiy Application".
Basically, I need to schedule this task, but the AdminTask_Process in SSIS does not do all of the required steps (such as rebuilding dependency tables).
I have asked SAP this question a week ago, but had nothing back, so I'm hoping that someone on here can point me in the right direction.
    Thanks
    Craig

As you probably know, a full optimize of any application(s) deletes the dependencies from the FACT tables of thos app's.
Without the dependencies, a lot of our larger jobs fail, as there are no indexes to refere to, so the entire tables are searched/updated.
To avoid the failures, after running a full optimize, we have to manually process each application that was affected (currently 7 apps) in Admin Manager.
Part of the full process is to rebuild the dependencies (amongst other things)
As you can imagine, this is a time-consuming process, and one of my colleagues is having to dial in to our systems to perform this task each Sunday.  (We have reduced the full optimizes to once a week because of this problem).
We need to get back to daily optimizes, but this is impossible right now, because of this problem.
This is why I need to be able to schedule it - I would schedule the full optimization for, say, 3am, followed by a scheduled task to run the process job at 5am to rebuild the dependencies and re-index before anyone starts work each day.
I know that the problem is fixed in SP11 of 5.1 (and in SP6 of v7), but whilst this is released 18/09/09, it will be months before we are ready to implement it due to testing and deployment windows.
So I need to know what procedure(s) are called when I tick the "Process Application" box in Admin Manager and hit "Modify Application".
As it is a simple tick-box, there has to be a check in the software that says "If this box is ticked then do this, this and this"
I just need to know what "this, this and this" are.
In the meantime, I have come up with a "dirty" way to do it, which is by dropping and recreating the Stored Procedures that depend on the FACT tables.
By doing that, they automatically update the FACT table dependency list and re-index.
However, as I am just imitating the jobs that I can see running through SQL Profiler, I could easily be missing steps.
Therefore, I would like to be able to just call the BPC process that controls the Processing job.
    Hope that helps.
    Any suggestions ???
    Thanks
    Craig

  • HT1923 what hard drive changes are made when downloading i-tunes 10.6 upgrade

what hard drive changes are made to my computer when downloading the i-Tunes 10.6 upgrade / update?
what registry changes does it make, if any?

Ok, so as far as the hard drive goes, go for the biggeset one you can afford/need. 500 gb, should be plenty big for just about anybody. But as for the speed of the drive.... Yes, a 7200 rpm drive will drain the battery life much quicker than a 4200 rpm drive or even a 5400 rpm drive. Apple has been shipping 4200 rpm drives as a standard for ever practically, and recently made the 5400 rpm the new standard with the 7200 as an option. More important than the physical speed is the buffer size. A nice big buffer will provide quicker access to data and not eat into your battery life. Then there is also the option of an SSD (solid state drive), but those are still crazy expensive.
I've read any Serial ATA drive is compatible with the drop sensor. I upgraded my hard drive with a Seagate, and it works great. Apple generally ships Toshiba drives in their laptops.
replacing a hard drive can be a bit of work. First of all it will void your warranty (But your is obviously expired anyways) It is pretty complicated and takes a lot of patience. iFixit has great step by step instructions. here's a link : http://www.ifixit.com/Device/MacBookPro_15%22_Core_2_Duo_Models_A1226_andA1260

  • Network or database calls are made when joining more than one table

    Hi Friends,
could anybody please let me know how may networks are called when joining more than one table.
    Thanks
    Rinky

    Hi Rinky,
Normally when a JOIN between two database tables is made then following steps occur:-
    1) The control goes to database. Based on the JOINING and WHERE condition, an internal table is created in the DATABASE only which is filled. So here the computation is done at DATABASE level.
    2) Once the internal table is filled at database level, it is sent back to the application level.
A Join operation normally minimizes the round trips to the database as most of the computation is done at database level only and results sent back to the Application layer.
<b>Thus for a simple JOIN OPERATION makes a single DATABASE call.</b>
NOTE: If you are satisfied with the explanation, then please reward points
               accordingly :).
    Thanks and regards,
    Ravi .

  • How does Apple process Raw Photo's for Books?

Shooting in Raw I recently made up an 80 page book, all of Raw photo's about 7meg each. However the PDF File that was uploaded to Apple was only 20megs in total. So a massive compression was used. This surely happens every time.
If so is there any point in Shooting Raw, and would Big Jpeg files suffer a simular compression?
As the process is all about up load time for files, surely what ever we shoot will be degraded by the very nature of online ordering? Or will it?
Love to know the best working practice for optimum results. Apple are so secretive no useful information is available.
    Thankk you.

I do not have an answer for you, but I share your pain.
I, too, used raw files to create a book. Some of the pictures in the book appeared soft and in some instances there was noticeable stair-casing.
I recently heard from apple regarding issues I had with the quality of the book printing. Regarding image sharpness, I received this cryptic message from the folks at apple.
"3) We have also examined the PDF file submitted with your order and noticed that a few of the photos were very dark, and the resolution was off which made a few of the photos not sharp"
No explanation was provided as to why the "resolution was off". Since I was working with Raw files, I assume it's aperture's responsibility to set up the resolution properly?
Resolution was there, I know that because I use a 16.7 megapixel camera.
In this forum, one person mentioned that he exported jpegs then imported them back into aperture to create a book. In doing so, he achieved the sharpness he desired. Obviously, though, that isn't an ideal workflow.

  • White Balance Tint Limit When Processing Raw Files

Hi guys, following some recent suggestions I've got hold of some Welding glass to use as an ND filter on my Fuji HS20. It arrived today and works a treat.
I do however now have a new issue that this has caused.  I've set a custom white balance on the camera to counter act the tint from the glass. This now produces the correct colour on my jpg photo's however the RAW files have the wrong colour tint.
When I open them in photoshop elements 11 I get the CAMERA RAW application. The white balance is set to 'AS SHOT' however the Tint is at +150. I'm guessing my problem is that the tint needs to be more than +150 and CAMERA RAW is limiting it.
Does this mean I am now limited to using JPG's when I use this glass as an ND filter, or is there a way I can get rid of this limit to the tint on the white balance

    filippodallosso wrote:
I have exactly the same problem. The reply is to your question is not what you were asking, isnt it?
The point is that we CAN NOT adjust the white balance as suggested, because the sliders are already at their maximum value when we open the photo in camera raw. We'd need to further increase the tint value (as the photo looks green) but it is by default at 150, so we cannot increase it further.
One way to overcome the limitation of the tint/temp sliders is to save an intermediate tiff or psd file. You can open it in ACR and apply the same maximal slider correction.
For the same purpose, instead of saving an intermediate file, I opened the raw file in the editor. From there, I used the Editinacr script in Elements+ to reopen the layer in ACR (shift f3 and script selection). Same corrections and back as a new layer in the editor. I could repeat the process several times to get a very powerful correction without intermediate files.

    No, you're not.
Bridge is just a file browser, it doesn't open, edit or save any files at all.  It just hands the file(s) to the appropriate application, whether that be Adobe Camera Raw (ACR), Photoshop, Illustrator, Acrobat, or even MS Word.
Check your Thumbnail preferences in Bridge Preferences.

  • Processing raw photo's

I am new to aperture and recently shot my nieces wedding in raw. I have edited the photo's but cant figure out how to convert the edited raw versions to jpeg for further use. Can I do them all as a batch or do they have to be done individually?
I recently tried uploading them to site to make a book but very small versions uploaded (100-300kb) are these the tumbnails/ previews that uploaded? If so, what do I have to do. I would like to get rid of the masters and only keep the edited and converted photos but I cannot seem to find information on how to do this in the manual. Any Help would be GREATLY appreciated!!
FYI, I shot them in Raw + Jpeg.

    Dr Doodle wrote:
That makes sense. I will store the pix on another hard drive.
There is no need to do this. The goal is to leave all of your images in the Aperture Library. (Which you want, by the way, on your fastest drive, typically your internal drive.) If your fastest disk gets too full, over say 75%, then you can relocate the master images to another hard drive as referenced masters. This drive does not have to be fast at all. (All of the terms here are taken within their specific Aperture context.) You will still be able to see high quality previews of all of your images, but you will only be able to edit referenced images when the master is physically connected.
I am still having a problem with the export though...perhaps I am still just misunderstanding what I need to do. When I export the raw image to a folder on my desktop I am only getting approx. a 100kb image. I need to make a photo book but am thinking that i need an image in MB rather then kb to print. I also want to print a very large photo but I dont' seem to be able to get a larger picture. Am I going about this wrong? I tried to do it as a Tiff and it was 2.7mb ...can I make that larger and can most photo processing Co's use Tiff? Sorry for all the questions...I am very new to raw and love what I can do with raw when needed but am very confused with what to do to make the photos usable and printable after editing.
Is there a book that you would recommend on Aperture that would be helpful?
Apple sells an excellent tutorial book/DVD. Complete that and you will be able to spend hours on this forum wowing everybody with your knowledge.
The online "Help" of Aperture 3 is simply outstanding and includes the full user manual on line and hyperlinked.
As for exporting, here is a quick cut and paste from said manual:
    ======
    *An Overview of Exporting Images*
Using Aperture, you can export copies of masters, as well as versions that you’ve created. When you export image versions, you can export them in JPEG, TIFF, PNG, and PSD file formats.
At export, you can rename files, resize and adjust images, and include metadata such as EXIF information, IPTC information, and keywords. You can also apply ColorSync profiles and watermarks to the versions you’re exporting. You can export separate lists of metadata for selected images as a file. You can also export masters with IPTC data stored in XMP sidecar files that can be used in other applications, such as Adobe Photoshop.
Before exporting your images to another application, a printing service, a client, or a website, you need to know what file types the recipient can use. You should also check with the recipient about other important information, including file size limitations, required image dimensions, and naming conventions. The key to a successful file transfer is anticipating—and avoiding—anything that can prevent the recipient from opening your files.
Aperture allows you to perform multiple export operations concurrently. However, it’s extremely important that you avoid making changes to the images you are exporting until the operation is complete to prevent unintended behavior.
The easiest way to export images is to use one of the Aperture export presets. Presets, or groups of export settings, allow you to efficiently export your images. If the presets included with Aperture don’t meet your needs, you can create your own. For example, if you regularly send groups of photos to a stock photography house and a printer, you can create an export preset for each destination. Give the presets a name you’ll remember, and the next time you need to send images to either destination, simply select the correct export preset.
You can also modify existing export presets and delete export presets you no longer use.
    ======
This page then links down through all of the myriad variations, masters, versions, etc.
HINT: What you want to do is:
-- Import RAW from your camera. Adjust as needed. Consider using an import preset to get a more JPEG like starting point. If you need to keep "copies" of different crops, adjustments, etc., make new "versions" they are only 40kb each.
-- Export an image as needed for printing/emailing/posting. Select file format/color space/compression/etc. to meet your needs.
-- Once you have used the exported image, delete it. It serves no further purpose. Your master image and any alternative versions are safe in your Aperture Library.
Assure you have a good backup scheme and go shoot more pictures.
    Hope this is helpful.
