Suddenly nothing plays in Premiere Pro

I have been dealing with this since Sunday morning when I allowed Adobe Updater to do its thing.  Ever since then Premiere has been useless.
When I hit the space bar or press the play button nothing happens.  I might hear a nanosecond of audio and the video might advance one frame, but that is all.  I have tried simple projects with one measly dv file in the timeline.  Nothing, no matter how simple, can play in the timeline or anywhere else in Premiere.  BUT the same files run just fine outside of Premiere, even in After Effects.  Also, as others have reported, I can scrub the footage with no problems.
I have already uninstalled and updated my video and audio drivers.  I have also run various Windows updates as suggested.  No dice.
I read carefully and followed the applicable items in the much ballyhooed Kb405478 troubleshooting doc in the knowlege base section.  No joy.
I did install 3ds Max 2010 in the last few days.  However I have had no problems over the last year while Max 2009 was installed.  I can't rule out 2010 as a culprit though because I don't remember if I had run Premiere between then and the Adobe Updater Affair (as it will come to be known).
Yes, I hold a grudge against Adobe Updater.  A few months ago it damaged my registry and as a result, my 64 bit Photoshop is still inoperable.  I can live without that.  I CAN'T live without Premiere.  I have years of work and a lot of money invested in a short film that may never see the light of day if this is not resolved.  Please chime in with any thoughts or similar experiences.
I would like to avoid a complete reinstall for three reasons:
1. Several posters with this and similar problems have reported doing so multiple times with NO sucess.
2. I am worried about what it might do to my premiere and after effects files especially those that are dynamically linked.
3. I believe it is necessary to install the entire CS4 suite.  Once can't simply install Premiere.  Please correct me if I am wrong about this.
very best regards,
Tim
Some details
Creative Suite CS4
Gateway FX6710-01
Intel Core2 Quad Q9400  @2.66GHz
RAM 6.00 GB
ATI Radeon 4800 series
Windows Vista 64bit
Also running Redcode (which had run perfectly for months) but this new problem persists even when it is uninstalled.  So don't go blaming RED

Many of those 16 questions were covered in my post.  Here they are in more detail.
1. Have tried various file types all of which played 2 days ago.  Nothing plays now.
2. Premiere Pro CS4 4.2.1, English, updates up to 4.2.1, but may have skipped 4.2.
3. Vista Home Premium SP1 English 1920x1200 32 bit
4. Intel Core2 Quad Q9400 @ 2.66 GHz
5. 6.00 GB RAM
6. ATI Radeon HD 4800 series Driver Version 10.1  2D Driver Version 8.01.01.994
7. Single monitor
8. Realtek "High Definition Audio Device" Audio Driver version 6.0.1.5688
9. Hard drives OS (C:) 429GB free, (E:) 81.5GB free (I:) 528GB free (J:) 220 GB free (L:) 525GB free (N:) 823GB free
10. No capture device
11. No capture software (besides Premiere of course)
12. My only plugin is ImporterRED
13. I see no error messages.  (Is there a log somewhere?)
14. I want to play media in Premiere.  I am either hitting the space bar or pressing the play button with the mouse.  The result is no playback save the occasional brief burst of audio mentioned earlier.  I am using old files that have always worked, and simple new ones just for troubleshooting.  I have tried Quicktime, AVI, wav, REDcode.  Nothing will play.
15. All of these formats played flawlessly prior to the update.
16. As mentioned in the original post, I have updated video and audio drivers (uninstalled them first), and made sure all important Microsoft updates were performed.  (I think there was just one outstanding, but that is now covered).
OK, there it is.  The two biggest things that have changed since Premiere worked were the Adobe Update, and a few days before that I installed Autodesk 3dsMax 2010.  Max 2009 has been running on this same machine for about a year and never bothered Premiere.

  • Nothing plays in premiere pro cs6

I just started CS6 creative cloud, wanted to transition from FCP.  Second project, running Mac Pro 4,1, OS 10.6.8, 2.66 quad core.  I have an SSD as my system disk, and two 500 Gb HDD striped as my media disk.  Fotage is AVCHD, 1080p 24p from a Canon C100.  (First project was HDV from a Sony Z1U, didn't ave this problem.)  After a few minutes, nothing will play in the timeline or proram or source monitors.  I restarted the program once and it solved the problem, but I can't be restarting every 5 minutes.  This is infuriating.

1st, what is your graphics adapter (usually ATI/AMD or nVidia) and what is your driver version?

  • How do I export on Media Encoder CC and play on Premiere Pro CC without affecting the export?

I can export on media encoder and play on Premiere at the same time if I save my project > Close premiere pro > open Media encoder > import premiere pro sequence > start export > and open my project on premiere again.
But I`m having some issues with the playback quality (sometimes it stop and the audio starts getting out of sync), and the export gets slow.
Is there anything I can do to export and play at the same time?
I need the full quality of preview.
    Working with codecs XDCAM HD 422 and ProRes 422 on Mac Os X 10.7.5 (2 X 2.66 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon) wiht 24GB 1066 DDR3 RAM
    Hope u guys can help.

You can just queue up the export right from PP, start the encode and then go back to PP to continue working.  No need to close anything.
Doing this will slow down the export process, as PP will steal whatever resources it needs to run, often pausing AME to do so.

  • Photoshop Edited Video Not Playing In Premiere Pro

    Hi All
Apologies if this thread has been repeated elsewhere but I am getting pretty deperate in trying to sorth this problem out.
I am creating a remastered project of my Sister's Wedding video and I want to touch up a few frames in the video usinf Photoshop.
Here are the steps I did:
    1) I have created a new Photoshop (PSD) file within Premiere Pro with the same frame size/rate etc.
    2) I then import the wedding video into the PSD doucument in photoshop which creates a video layer.
    3) I search the frames that require repair and edit using the tools in PS.
    4) Then Save the the file in PS.
    5) I move back to PPro and Import the PSD file into the project panel.  As there was only one video layer, I selected 'all layers'.
    6) I move the PSD file to the timeline and press play and the program monitor just shows the last frame I edited in Photoshop even though the sequence is over 90 minutes long!  The playhead moves but just a single frame shown on the monitor.
Am I missing something here?  I know you can have a Photoshop/Premiere Pro workglow and do all the edits or filtering, transitions necessary and it will automatically update in Premiere Pro, but this simply isn't working as I'd expect.
I am an amateur user of these applications and being partially sighted probably doesn't help either, so any help would be gratefully received.
    Thanks in advance
    Dave

    Hi Dave,
Haven't touched up any video in Photoshop in a couple of years, but the last step is definitely to export as VIDEO from PS, which will be an .MOV file. A .PSD file is not video
EDIT: Just Googled "how to edit video in photoshop", tons of tutorial vids come up right away
    Thanks
    Jeff

  • Apple ProRes HQ files (converted from HDV) will not play in Premiere Pro

I was working on a project in premier pro and finished a draft on 12/24 with no issues.  I took these file directy from their coverted state as .mov files into the PP project and edited on the timeline with no issues.  Shut down on 12/24.  Opened project today, none of the files from the HDV converted format will play correctly OR export correctly.  They are all Black video and still contain the right audio.
As a side note here, this is the same for trying to play the file in Quicktime AND in Apple's Final Cut Pro 7.
The only files affected are those that were uploaded and coverted to Apple ProRes HQ from the HDV format.
Again, this was working and functioning fine un Tuesday, now they appear black in the timeline and viewers.
Only change made to ANYTHING on my iMac is: Updated iTunes on Tuesday after I had closed the project from Premiere Pro.
    Please help!!!
    Thankyou,
    Clede

    Sounds like a clue.
Apple / Mac  updates have a history of creating issues and plenty of evidence supports that statement.
My guess its a QT version issue.

I can validate this as well.  I've tested 5.5.24 and 5.5.25 (just released).  Neither seem to allow Premiere Pro to see my Retina MBP's nVidia GPU.
Strangely, it seems to work just fine with my Mac Pro 5,1, with a modified GTX570 card.  My suspicion is that there's an nVidia driver issue at play on the MBPs, though that doesn't explain the OP's issue.  With the Retina MBPs, we can't install the nVidia web drivers; we're forced to rely on the Apple provided ones in OS X.  But the Mac Pros can (and it's highly suggested) run the nVidia web drivers.

  • Sudden playback problems in Premiere Pro CS 5.5.2 Mac - audio but no video

This is happening on my 12-core Xeon Mac Pro with 16gb of RAM (Lion 10.7.3), nVIDIA GeForce GTX 285 card, so it is probably not an insufficient-hardware issue... plus nothing has changed in the system that would explain this issue.
I was working on a file combine several short clips a couple of weeks ago, and all was well, despite the fact that I was using the raw FLV files. They imported, showed up and played back in Source just fine, and when I created my sequences they all worked beautifully in the Program monitor as well. I exported them, they looked great, all was unicorns and rainbows.
Until I came back from a trip today.
I repaired my permissions and restarted my machine (I always do that after a time away), and pulled up my file. Nothing at all in my system configuration has changed in the time I've been away and no one else has used it. But when I bring up any of the files or sequences in the source or program monitors, all I get is black, no matter what magnification or playback resolution I specify. I can play them, everything looks normal, the audio plays as if the file is running normally... but no video. If i stop playback and click on the video in the program monitor, I will see a still from that video. But as soon as I play, black.
The strange part is that this also applies to the play MOV files I brought in, and newer ones as well. I've brought files in that are in QT (Apple Animation Codec). H.264, MTS (AVCHD), etc., all files that have previously worked just fine, and all of them suffer from the same issue.
I will do some more system cleaning and restart everything again, but has anyone hadf a similar experience, have an explanation, a solution, anything? I will be in serious trouble if PPro can suddenly not work for me.
    Thanks,
    Matt

  • Premiere Pro can't play specific WMV files

Just installed Premiere Pro and imported some WMV files.  It plays back the audio but no video.
I know my computer has the correct codec for it because I can watch them in Windows Media Player without any problem.  Other WMV files and Mpeg files play in Premiere Pro just fine, but I can't understand why some WMV files play and some don't.
Is there a specific way to see what codec these files are using, and is there a way to test that Premiere Pro is picking up all of the codecs on my computer?

  • Fonts are degrading in Premiere Pro CC from Photoshop CC

I'm creating some simple text slates for use in a video. I am making them in Photoshop CC as TIF files with a transparent background to overlay onto the video in Premiere Pro CC. In Photoshop they look crisp, and clean around the edges, but when I import the TIF files into Premiere they get pixellated and have jagged edges. The dimensions of the TIF files are 1280x720 which is the same as the video and sequence settings in Premiere Pro.
Are there optimal settings I should be using in Photoshop to ensure best TIF quality in Premiere?
Should I maybe not be using a TIF file at all? PSD?
It is a very clean sans serif font. Nothing crazy. I don't know why this is happening and have tired a lot of things with the render settings etc to try and fix but am getting the same results.
I know in Final Cut the main thing was to ensure RGB color mode VS CMYK but I'm not sure if there are other things at play in Premiere Pro CC.
Any help is much appreciated. Thanks!

How do you typically set your transparency settings? I have them set how I always would.
What I've figured out that this definitely has something to do with the actual TIF file some how. If I use the exact same font at exact same size in Premiere by creating a title it looks crystal clear. This is very strange because I don't think I am doing anything different than usual with the TIF files...

  • Premiere pro cc 7.2.1 stopped reading prores from bmcc under windows 7

    hey there,
    the subject says it all.
i'm on a windows 7 HP Z820 and premiere pro as well as after effects CC stopped reading prores files from my blackmagic cinema camera (2.5k),
but the audio still works (and all other players on the system are playing the files properly).
    - uninstall/reinstall premiere pro CC - didn't work
    - uninstall/reinstall apple codec - didn't work
    - shot different codecs (cinema.dng/prores/DNxHD) - RAW and DNxHD kept working
    - encoded the camera's SSD's HFS+ on windows / oSX journaled on a mac - no difference
    any ideas?
    thankfully.
    sebastian.
ps: updated the blackmagic drivers of my 3D extreme+ card - same issue.

for all interested - i solved the problem.
after a few tryouts the system kept spitting out this error: "Adobe QT32server.exe The program can't start becaue MSVCP80.dll is missing"
this got solved by reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4.
with the error message gone nothing really changed - premiere pro CC insisted on not reading prores files while still reading dnxhd files from the black magic cinema camera.
i reinstalled the whole CC suite - same situation.
last but ot least i tried to uninstall anything with an apple logo on it - just to find out that you can not remove all of the components entirely without using 3rd party tools.
after that i reinstalled the prores decoder 1.0 along with the latest quicktime version (7.7.5).
    voilá.

  • Clips freeze in Premiere Pro but not Premiere Elements

I have downloaded the Creative Cloud trial of Premiere Pro. When I import clips and try to play them within it, the clip plays for the duration of the clip but the picture is frozen. The clips are MP4s and I have tried them in other programs and they work fine so the issue is not with the clips. I have converted them to every format I can think of but nothing works in Premiere Pro. The clips will play in the trial version of Premiere Elements, and Microsoft Movie Maker, just not in the trial version of Premiere Pro. I'm on Windows 8 on a brand new PC with Intel® HD Graphics 4400, 1TB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive, 8GB 2 DIMM (2x4GB) DDR3L 1600Mhz memory. The other weird thing is I put together a couple of the frozen clips and then saved them out as a movie, and in the movie the clips were moving even though in Premiere they were frozen. It's some kind of playback issue in Premiere Pro alone. Any ideas why the videos are frozen and won't play? Thanks!

  • Nothing plays in PP CS4

No video or audio will play in Premiere Pro CS4.  Not AVI's I captured myself using firewire.  Not WMV's.  Not WAV's.  Not MP3's.  The "play" button changes to a "stop" button, but that's all that happens.  The scrub line does not move in the Timeline/Sequence window or in the Source window when I hit "play" or "space bar".  The timecode/counters do not move in any window.  I've tried updating the display drivers, but that doesn't work.  One person suggested changing the Audio Hardware default device from Premiere Pro WDM Sound to something else, but I don't have any options other than WDM.
I can capture audio and video just fine.  I can edit in/out points by scrubbing and see the video move.  (I can't hear the audio while scrubbing even though that option is selected.)  I can even export media in a variety of formats and they play fine in Windows Media Player, but not in Premiere.
I've tried clicking every option "on" and "off" to see if anything works, but nothing changes.
    Do you have any thoughts?
    My version is 4.1.0 (113(MC: 166418))
    Intel Core 2 Duo
    E7500 3.0 GHz
    3 GB Ram
NVidia Quadro FX 1700 with 512MB

Because I do as much print work, as Video editing, I have more programs, than many, who have their workstations totally clean for just NLE work. I also do a great deal of DVD authoring, so I use many other programs for the artwork and also for text management. Still, I was able to clean off much of the detritus.
Now, my workstation does see very limited Internet work. For that, I have several "protection" programs, though behind a hardware firewall.
What I do, when editing is to first manually exit from my AV, pop-up blocker and spysweeper, then run EndItAll2 to eliminate all other unnecessary Processes. During that time, I do NOT have ANY Internet access, because my "guard" is down. During that time, if I need to go on-line, I use another computer in the LAN, and then transfer the material to the "unguarded" workstation.
I'm with Bill on some Processes to eliminate, on a temp basis. First, I went in with MSCONFIG and eliminated much from even loading. This was a custom machine, so I didn't have THAT much "stuff" to begin with. Still, Windows, and a few others, will stuff you in a hurry. After that, I use the above of each editing session, unless it's a Q & D (quick & dirty) little Project. For anything serious, I shut down everything that is unnecessary. Besides EndItAll 2, there are many similar apps. I just use that one, and have for the last 8, or so years. It was freeware back then, and I understand that it is now shareware. I like that I can tailor it, in case it wants to get too aggresive with what it eliminates.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Premiere Pro CS4 - editing video from GoPro video camera

I am having a problem trying to edit video from the GoPro camera in Premiere Pro CS4 (PP). Have not been able to get much help from GoPro - they just tell me to speak with Adobe. I think the video codec used by the camera is MJPEG (?). It won't play at all on the timeline. Interestingly it will in After Effects (AE) CS4 and if I export it out of AE as a Microsoft AVI file I can then play it in PP. However if I go straight to Media Encoder and import the clip and then try export the clip via ME as a Microsoft AVI the exported clip from ME won't play in Premiere Pro. I am confused. Does anyone know this camera, it's codec and why it just won't work when directly imported into Premiere Pro but it will when imported directly into After Effects. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.

I just purchase Adobe Premiere Pro a few days ago - and subsequently updated it to Ver 4.2.1.  A started a new project - I tried to import some video footage I just shot with a GOPro Hemet Cam while skiing at our local mountain.  I can easlily see the clip using Real Media Player - or the Quick Time player.  It is a 10.9 MB ... 7 second MPEG-4 movie clip.  File name is "gopro0030.mp4"
I created a "bin" called video .... then right clicked to import the file.  You can see the file name in the media browser.  But the file would not import.  I received this error message:  "109C ImporterProcessServer.exe  Application Error.  The instruction at "0x05efcac" referenced memory at "0x00000014".  The memory could not be read. CLick OK to terminate."
This is very frustrating - I just purchased the software - and it won't import a 7 second video clip!  It did import still fotos with no problem.  What can I do?
thank you for your attention to this.

  • Premiere Pro CC has no audio on imported MPEG2

So I just recently upgraded to the Creative Cloud, running Premire Pro CC about half of my workflow consists of editing Mpeg2 transport stream files.
After pushing a few projects through using other formats, I decided to drop one of my run of the mill mpeg2 files on a timeline. however the audio tracks show a straight line - no visible waveform.
I have pushed these same type of files (as well as some of the exact same files) through premiere pro CS5.5 and Premiere Pro CS4 with no issues at all.
I have dropped multiple other file types on the same sequence to double check that my project settings are not the issue, avchd, prores, vob, mp4, mp3, all play fine.
premiere pro CC DOES, however, see audio from an Mpeg 2 file created in media encoder, ( for this test I exported from a sequence comprised of prores and avchd files)
Also, the Mpeg 2 files which do not have audio on my premiere pro CC sequence can be played back WITH audio through vlc media player.
Thank you for any help with this problem!

it happened to me with mp4 clips. if you mean like this one
it is a an Adobe problem it even happened to media encoder. the clip is playable with any player app even I've tested it with other video production app & it works fine. so if you want to fix it temporary & fast without converting, get QuickTime pro to open the wanted clip then save the clip by QuickTime (save as) in another folder (don't change settings). in premiere pro just right click on the not working clip then choose (replace footage) with one you saved by QuickTime, voila!. if it doesn't work the clip might be broken or it need to be converted.
by the way I'm a windows 8.1 user

  • Premiere Pro Update 7.2.1 has lost Video Codec

When I'm Exporting a video the option for Video Codec Tap under the Export Settings has been removed with the new Update, on the 19th December 2013. Can anyone help tell me how I can export my video as a 1080p ProRes 422 (HQ).
    Thanks

for all interested - i solved the problem.
after a few tryouts the system kept spitting out this error: "Adobe QT32server.exe The program can't start becaue MSVCP80.dll is missing"
this got solved by reinstalling the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2012 Update 4.
with the error message gone nothing really changed - premiere pro CC insisted on not reading prores files while still reading dnxhd files from the black magic cinema camera.
i reinstalled the whole CC suite - same situation.
last but ot least i tried to uninstall anything with an apple logo on it - just to find out that you can not remove all of the components entirely without using 3rd party tools.
after that i reinstalled the prores decoder 1.0 along with the latest quicktime version (7.7.5).
    voilá.
