Suddenly really slow broadband

Hi,
since a couple of days I got really slow broadband and cant figure out why, called support and they said they call back today but noone did so I thought I try here.
I swapped microfilters, double checked pcs for any spyware/virus etc, tried my work laptop, using the mastersocket for 24 hrs as requested by the engineer on the phone which didnt make a difference and screwed the frontplate back on and ran another speed test
below is some infos from my router, just 20 mins connected now but already showing some errors not sure how significant they are as I never checked that when all was working fine.
Thanks for any advise and help you can give

the crc up errors are a bug in the firmware.
you have a good 8mb connection with the correct 7150 profile.  the problem is your throughput/download which is rubbish.

  • Really Slow Broadband Following Return From Holida...

I've just returned from nearly three weeks holiday. Before I went away my broadband was working fine. Not mega fast but to an acceptable level. Whilst away I completely powered off my computer and Home Hub. Since returning my broadband speed has gone really slow. Over the last three evenings I've run the Speed Test and have had the following reults.
    14/5/11 - 18:30 - Download Speed 72kbps, DSL U/S - 256kbps  - D/S 448kbps,  IP Profile 135kbps
    15/5/11 - 18:53 - Download Speed 83kbps, DSL U/S - 256kbps  - D/S 448kbps,  IP Profile 135kbps
    16/5/11 - 19:36 - Download Speed 92kbps, DSL U/S - 1280kbps  - D/S 448kbps,  IP Profile 135kbps
None of my equipment or wiring has changed. It's exactly the same as before I went away. I've also got a BT accelerator fitted to the socket.
Any ideas whats gone wrong and what I can do about it.  I'm sure it was faster than this when I was on Dial-up.

We dont have any extension sockets in the house just the one by the front door. This socket allowed the BT Acceleartor to be fitted.
Just tried the Quiet Line Test. No noise heard
    Hope this is helpful.

  • Really slow broadband all of a sudden.

Chatted to a bloke from BT both through the online chat and again on the phone about this issue and he said he would change some settings his end to try and increase our broadband speed. The broadband used to be fine, could stream videos just fine, browse the internet without any issues then all of a sudden the speed has dropped to below 1mbps (582kbps using the speedtester.bt.com).
The speedtester itself said that an "acceptable" speed should be between 600kb-7.5mbps. Frankly that is a bit of a joke as 600kbps is near enough where it is currently and even the 3G signal my iPhone is getting here loads web pages faster.
Just to reiterate, the speed was fine up until about 4-5 days ago.
Wiring inside house hasn't changed, don't have any extension sockets using homehub 2.0.

    Please Help!!!

After no luck whatsoever with the people on the online chat help system and after 3 calls to the customer help number I have finally been told that there is nothing wrong with my houses wiring, router etc etc. But the problem seems to lie (after the fourth line test in as many days) on the line between my house and the exchange!!!
How is it the other people that conducted line tests couldn't see that or did they not both and just spout some BS at me as they couldn't be bothered to actually get to the bottom of this issue?! Perplexes me how the first 3 line tests I was kept on the line whilst they carried out the test but on the fourth time of asking I was told that whilst a line test was underway I should not use the landline at all...
Pretty shoddy customer service to me from the first bunch of people I spoke to. Not happy.
Now I have been told that I will have to wait another 2-3 days until and engineer examines the line and possibly even longer after that until the problem gets fixed and its been broken for over a week now!! What are we BT customers actually paying for?!

  • MacBook Pro suddenly really slow, hangs often

My MacBook Pro is about 2 years old. It had been slowing down and occasionally running out of memory, which I figured was due to the fact that my hard disk was kind of full (had about 100 Gig of space available, which I thought should be enough, but whatever). But in the past 2 days this has gotten really, really worse. It's almost unusable. It's running Snow Leopard.
It takes a full 5 mibutes to start.
When I open an application it takes really long to open, then evey few things I do it hangs for a couple of minutes with the rainbow wheel spinning. Occasionally an application completely stops responding, and has to be force quit.
This even happens if I have only one app open at a time.
    What has changed recenttly:
    • 2 weeks ago I switched from DSL to cable. I have a new cable modem and wireless router. There is some random software that Comcast sent me but I don't think it's even installed.Things were still running slow and frustrating but pasable after that.
    • 5 days ago I bought a new Droid 3 cell phone, and installed The Missing Sync on my computer to sync music, photos and calendar. It still ran slow after that, but not crazy messed up like now. I don't remember if the speed seemed any worse -- I just know that it didn't hang often the way it does now.
    • 2 days ago I bought a new MacBook Pro with a faster processor, runnign Lion. I started migration assistant, then realized it was going to take 14 hours and I had work to do, so I stopped the assistant. and decided to run it again later. I think it's since then things became a complete mess, and every day that passes seems worse.
    • In the meantime, I may or may not have installed some software updates. I get update notices all the time, and generally install them right away without giving them much thought. In fact, now that I think of it, Firefox startded acting pretty slow after the last update (spinning wheel when opening new tabs, loading information, switching from one tab to the other), which I attributed to a buggy new release but it might be related. I don't know how long ago that was; I think about a week or two. There may have beensome OS udates too, I can't remember.
I did run migration assistant again late last night, after cleaning out my old hard disk (backing things up to DVDs and external drives) so it would have less data to transfer. But it transfered over everything, including old apps thatI don't need and don't know how to uninstall, and I am worried that I might have transeferred over whatever the problem was with the old computer. I can't easily test because the apps that I use every day (Microsoft Office 2008 and the Adobe Creative Suite CS4) don't run on Lion so I will have to buy upgrades for everythign before I can do any work on this computer, which is quite frustrating in itself but a different story. So I haven't been able to test whether my new laptop has the same problem; it does generally seem faster but not as much of a speed increase as I had hoped.
I ran disk utility on the old laptop, and it did find some directory issues, but I can't repair it because I don't have any discs to start up from. Why is it that Apple doesn't ship disks with its software? Granted, my new laptop runs a different operating system from the old one, but I didn't receive any system disks with it so I really don't have anything to start externally from if there ever are any problems.
I want to keep the old mac. I occasionally travel to countries where I don't feel comfortable bringing a new expensive computer, so I intend to use my old computer as a travel laptop and the new one as my primary work laptop in my home office. But that means that I don't want to have to throw out the old one, I need to get it working again.
(also, until I install the Microsoft and Adobe upgrades, I can't do any work on my new laptop and I have deadlines to meet that I will need to continue working on with the old laptop) (which, in fact, makes thisissue rather urgent -- I ned to keep working while it's being resolved)

OK, so someine suggested I run AppleJack -- it did make some repairs and now Disk Utility doesn't see anything wrong with my directory, but still finds some permissions problems. Almost all of them seem to be in System/Library/CoreServices/Front Row.app. Says:
should be -rw-r--r--, they are lrw-r--r--
Do I need to fix these or can I leave as is? What is Front Row? Does it make any difference who has permissions on these if they are for a program I don't use?
    Also:
stalling problems seem to have been resolved for now (I opened 3 different apps and they seemto work OK). But I still have a problem with the Microsoft Office applications -- I can't easily switch to/from Excel or Word from/to any other apps, I can't CTRL-TAB and select the app, I have to go to that app's window (means moving other windows around until I can see it) and click on it to switch to that app. It's doable but a nuisance. Can it be fixed?
    Also - important:
Would the directory problems I had on my old hard disk have affected the information I ported over to the new laptop yesterday? Will I have the same problems on my new laptop? I can't check because I haven't downloaded the upgrades to Microsoft Office and to the Adobe CS Suite, so I pretty much can't open hardly any programs on my new machine right now.  I thought maybe I should run Applejack on that too, just to check, but apparently it doesn't work with OSX 7 Lion.

There's definitely something amiss there Kev as your IP profile matches your sync speed.  Best to do as John has mentioned and e-mail the forum mods to see if they can have some light shed on things and hopefully get this put right for you (& the others in the same boat).

There is no mention of any problem on the service status page, or on the usertools website.  I've e-mailed BT this morning - but I've not heard anything back yet, and it doesn;t appear on the status pages.  Does anyone know how long it takes for a problem to get investigated?

  • Really, really slow broadband

    Hi everyone,
Our broadband speed has, for the last few months, ran abismally slow. I've replaced the plug in filter for a new unit and I've disconnected all other phones in the house.  The broadband speedtester tells me my IP profile is 135kbps but I still can't get much better than 39 kbps download speed. The DSL connection rate being 284kbps upload and 444kbps download. When the wiring was installed to the study/home office some 4 years ago it all worked fine.
I've fitted combined phone/ASDL wall plates which plugs into a Linksys wireless router via. usb with my wifes laptop and my sons desktop using the wireless connection.
Any help, advice that anyone can offer would be appreciated. If I can sort it out without resorting to helpdesks then I'd preffer to do it this way.
    Many thanks in antisipation
    Quincy

    Quincy here again.
It turns out that our line has been "upgraded" to 21CN, something I knew nothing about. The new service can detect when the router is off and because I switch everything off when I'm finished with the computer the exchange thinks there is a fault and tries to throttle back the speed. This isn't mentioned anywhere on the BT web site (To the best of my knowledge) Even the BT engineer who came out wasn't aware of that!! 30 hours after the engineers visit I'm still only getting a download 56KBPS but some of the details on the speedtester have changed, there is no mention of the downstream and upstream DSL connection rates and now it's telling me "The acceptable range of speeds is 50-135KBPS" it was, prior to the visit, "50-250KBPS"
I'm waiting for the exchange to self-correct the speed issue but it may need a lift and shift at the exchange.
So beware, DON'T switch off your hub/router if your on 21CN!!

  • My video is suddenly really slow before flashing a bright green screen.

I started editing on my Macbook Pro with my FCPX free trial, then went back to edit the same project on a school computer. I've done this countless times before with no issue, but the program is suddenly running really slowly. If I try to play, the footage will start fine, but after 2 or 3 seconds it will start lagging until the video goes away entirely and is replaced by a bright green screen. Moving clips around also causes the turning wheel to appear for at least 20 seconds before I can finally continue editing, but even then I can only do that one move before the turning wheel comes back. The footage is only 3.5 minutes long, and I'm not trying to do anything I haven't done before.
What could be causing these issues, and how do I fix them?

    Tony,
The video is from the same camera as all of my other projects (JVC 100), but since it is a partner project, another girl filmed it (she has had no issues). My hard drive crashed on the 6th, and prior to that FCPX would not open while it was connected, but had no problem opening without the drive. I think it's safe to assume that it was my hard drive causing all of the problems, but I'm going to go in and ask an Apple employee if there is anything else that I can do to prevent this from happening in the future.
Thanks for all of your help.

  • Suddenly very slow broadband speed

Hi all, I have been using BT broadband for a while now with now problems at all until now.
I have 8Mb Option 1 with a 10Gb download limit and a black home hub and I should expect to get a speed of about 6Mb. The hub is usually switched of at night but over the last few days we have left it on 24/7.
Early morning at about 0500 I can get speeds of about 5.5Mb which is great, but during the day and evenings it goes down to about 250Kbps and is mostly un-usable for anything except basic browsing and email.
Tonight I connected the hub away from any power leads etc. Directly to the Bt master test socket using a new filter and connected using another wireless device(not the PC) and the speed was only slightly better.
I have spoken to the help desk and they are sending out a new hub and some new filters but I don't think this is the problem.
I don't know how to post the stats from the hub and speed test results yet.
    Any ideas?

Me and my girlfriend took out broadband in her grandad's house and were promised near a 3.5 - 4mb speed, its never been anywhere near that. Speedchecker has it at 0.95mb download throughput and 0.3mb upload. Tried downloading an anti-virus from download.com to get an impartial test, it was going at 80-90 kbps, its a joke. Some help would be good.

    its on the kilsyth exchange:
You are connected to the Kilsyth telephone exchange.
ADSL is available in your area
Your exchange is also enabled for ADSL Max services
Your exchange is not yet enabled for ADSL2+ services
According to BT Wholesale, houses at your postcode should be able to support a 3Mbps or greater ADSL connection via ADSL Max.
    Standard ADSL RAG results
    You cannot receive 2Mbps ADSL
You may be able to receive 1Mbps ADSL
    You can receive 512kbps ADSL
    You can receive 256kbps ADSL
You are approximately 2.22km from the exchange. Note that this is the straight line distance - the actual cable length will be longer!

  • Really slow broadband for 3 years or more

Hi - I have been with BT for 7 months or so. Prior to that with Pipex (albeit on the BT 'network' obviously).
I have had a max speed of 1.8m but this has been rare and maybe only once!
Generally I get 65kbps to 500kbps. sometimes zero.
    It is frustratingly slow.
Eventually I can get the helpdesks to get something done at the exchange and this temporarily gets my speed up again for a couple of weeks.  Maybe as high as 1.2m.   It is always a battle and takes multiple calls to get something done.
I have had engineers out twice and hope to have another next week.
They have replaced my master socket for an ADSL one and have changed some exterior wiring.
It seems like the temporary fix is to cap my speed to somehow get it chugging better as opposed to a perm fix.  My neighbours dont have the same prob.
    Any ideas?
    thanks
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Hi  gazzab,
Looking at your stats (Thanks for these) is would appear that you have a dropping connection.
The speed test results indicate that your throughput is fine, i.e. 451kbps off a Line rate off 500kbps is normal.
However, the connection time is only 1hr 40 mins so this raises a few questions:
    1. Where do you have the Home hub connected?
Ideally the Home Hub should be connected to the Master socket/Test socket, if you have one. See the following link to ensure the internal wiring is not affecting your connection/speed:
    http://bt.custhelp.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/13892/c/346,4740,4740
    2. Do you turn the router off when not in use?
The BT server will take steps to stabilise a connection if it is continuously dropping and will reduce the speed in order maintain a more stable connection.
The best thing you could do is make sure that the router is left on at all times to stop the BT server reducing the speed to stabilise the connection. If you have the Hub connected to an extension socket, move it to the either the Master or Test socket and leave it there for at least 72 hours to see if the speed increases.
Let us know how you get on
    Cheers

  • Slow broadband speed all of a sudden.

A week ago, 28/4, the broadband suddenly stopped working late at night. It was connected but nothing would work. I left it for about half n hour then unplugged the home hub 3 and plugged back in after a minute. It connected OK but it was really slow. It continued to be incredibly slow over the next couple days. I tried resets/unplugs but nothing worked. It went from about 6mb with a couple more other devices connected to 0.5mbps on one.
Ive rang bt three times now and been through the "I'm just making changes to your connection. Done all the speed tests etc and it's still at best 2.5 mbps on one device. The bt vision box runs through the Internet so some channels won't work and having more than 2 devices playing makes quality terrible. We're used to having 3-4 connected and it being fine. Any ideas on what it could be or how best to test/just wait/keep asking bt. It doesn't seem like the hub so I'm lost.

in order for the forum members to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router you may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or if HH4/5 then go to troubleshooting then logs and you are looking for 2 line together when hub last connected to internet and they will show your connection speed and noise margin or if netgear enter 192.168.0.1). Then run  btspeedtester  (MAC users may have problems). when first test completes then run diagnostic test and post the results ( do not reset the router).
are you connected directly via a filter to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Is the master the only phone socket in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

  • My Macbook Pro suddenly became really slow

3 Days ago my Macbook Pro suddenly became really slow. I can't run anything without my computer freezing. I've had my Macbook Pro since mid-2012 (21 months). The first thing i did was check my activity monitor, which said that I was apparently using 4 GB (half) of my Macbook Pro's RAM, even though nothing was running. The process that was using the most RAM was kernal.task, which was only around 600mb of RAM. All the processes RAM amounts only added up to around 1 GB,  not four. I can't even open safari without my computer freezing. The amount of RAM being "used" on my computer slowly started to increase, even though nothing was running, until it got to all 8 GB being used. When i restart my computer, it goes back to 4 GB and starts to rise again. My processor, on the other hand, is doing nothing. Its acting normally. How do i get my computer back to its usual performance?
    Hardware Specifications
    13-inch Mid-2012 Macbook Pro
Processor: 2.9 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory: 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3
Graphics: Intel HD Graphics 4000 1024 MB
    750 GB HDD
    OS X 10.9.2

Since you are using Mavericks OS, the amount of RAM being used is inconsequential but the 'pressure' is.  If green is showing then the RAM usage is normal.  This is a change fro prior OSX's.
The usual problem will lie with the HDD,  It may be too full or needs to be repaired or replaced.  Go into OSX recovery and select from the 4 option menu Disk Utility.  Choose First Aid and run Verify and Repair.
(Start the MBP with the OPTION key down and select the recovery partition)
If that does not solve the problem, try a safe boot:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1564
If the MBP responds 'normally' that usually indicates that there is a third part application that is causing the problem.  They have to bedeleted and reinstalled in a systematic way so that you can identify the culprit.
    Ciao.

  • My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do?

My Macbook pro 2011 suddenly has a really slow bootup. What can I do? I did install a cannon printer upgrade and security upgrade. Not sure if it was something to do with that. Also I tried the disk utility repair and didn't improve anything. I also reset PRAM and SMC.

    1. Try booting in e Verbose mode - press and hold [cmd] + [v] keys just right after the boot chord sounds till you get a black screen and white letters.
if there are some delays in the boot process  -  you should see where the system is stuck.
this mode is not permanent - the next [re-] boot will be normal.
    2. repair permissions. disk utility does fine. Disk Warrior is better.
sometimes after half done updates (it may happen though should not) there are items that are "belonging to someone else"
    3. try  cache cleaner (or there are some other utilities as well - I just like SlCC  more)  http://www.northernsoftworks.com/snowleopardcachecleaner.html - it's shareware though the basic functionality is free for you to use.
Try caches -> deep cleaning (please read the developers site what it does) and select checkmark at all options - reply yes to the requests and after a reboot the next reboot should be as it is intended.
p.s be sure you do have backup
