Suddenly reduced BB download speed - again!

Many months ago, I suffered a drastic reduction in BB speed.  Please can you help?  According to BT website, I should get BB download speed of 12.0 to 14.5 Mb/s but since September this has been around 9 Mb/s.  On 19 December 2012, the speed suddenly dropped to 6655/828 and here is my current data from the Hub 2.0:

As you can see, the noise ratio which is usually in the 14-15 dB area has jumped to over 20 dB!
Please don't tell me that this is due to the Hub being reset too often.  Only time I switched off the Hub was to move it to the BT box in the hallway.  It resets itself frequently enough with no help from me.  Today it has reset itself three times in 8 minutes during the past hour!!
I have moved my Hub from upstairs at the end of a 15-metre extension to the BT box in our hallway where it enters the house.  No improvement whatever.  I have an I-Plate fitted.
I connected my laptop to the Hub by ethernet and got the results:
Max possible speed 7.15Mb/s; actual speed 5.87 Mb/s download.  Sorry I can't show the image but the desktop I am using is connected by wireless and the BT Speedtester doesn't want me to connect wirelessly - why not?
Can someone please reset the noise margin to something like the 6.0 dB that is the BT standard as that will undoubtedly speed up my connection?  And should I just dump the Hub 2.0 and buy a router which delivers?  And when will this lonely bit of Birmingham be getting Infinity?  Every other exchange around me has Infinity buty good old Acocks Green still operates steam-powered Broadband!!
Help, please!

  • Suddenly reduced BB download speed

I rang 0800 111 4567 on Sunday night (19 Feb 2012) after losing broadband completely and was told the problem would be resolved within 24/48 hours.  Monday morning, I was connected at 08:11 and got 11984/828.  The Home Hub 2.0A then restarted a dozen times and I ended up at 09:07 with 12108/828.  I am supposed to be getting 17MB but.....
All seemed to be well until Tuesday morning when I started my PC and found the speeds were now 7127/790 and the download speed remains stubbornly at 7127 while the upload speed bounces around between 828 and 756.  Found out about the forum this afternoon!

I am less half a mile from the exchange and very disappointed with BB speed.
    What do I do now?

I do not know.  It reset yesterday at 16:37 (7127/708), 16:44 (7127/756), at 18:24 (7127/828) and this morning, soon after I started up my PC, it restarted again (7127/828).  This morning, it took three minutes to reset.  I suddenly noticed that only two lights were on - power light and wireless light were both blue.  I then sat and waited for at least two minutes before the Broadband light started to flash orange and eventually went blue and then the Phone light flashed half a dozen times and went blue.
Usually, when the Hub restarts, it takes under a minute.

Why is my Max achievable speed 7.15Mbps when I am on "up to 20MB" service and should be getting 17MB?

  • E4200 - Router reduces the download speed

I've had this router for about over 6 months. First, the wireless connection has been pretty rock solid. No random disconnects, and the range is great too. Here's my issue so far...
I've recently upped my internet speed with my provider to the 110 Mbps level. In preparation for this new high end speed, I decided it was time for me to upgrade all my computer gear to the latest and greatest hardware.
Anyway, my new setup should more than handle a "measely" 110 Mbps internet connection.
After I got my new system up and running, I called my internet service provider and upped my service to the new highest speed tier. I then ran a speed test and the fastest download I could achieve was 99.87 Mb/s. At first at thought maybe my integrated ethernet jack on my motherboard was only 10/100 (which I was pretty sure was a gigabet network adapter). Anyway, I disconnected my computer from the router and plugged my cable modem into the computer directly. Ran a speed test and boom... I was able to get 115 Mb/s on download! Woo Hoo!! Ran the speedtest a few more times to make sure, and got the 115 Mb/s each and everytime I ran the test.
So, I hooked my router back up and my speed tests were back down to 99 Mb/s. It looks as though the bottle neck is my router even though the this router is advertised as a gigabit router. The web interface for the router shows that the port I have my computer plugged into, is registering Gbps (marked by a blue square). I've tried every setting in the router to achieve my 110 Mb/s speed with no luck. I've tried firmware upgrades, turning off wireless, turning off firewal, etc... to no avail. About the only thing I haven't tried is a third party firmware. Oh by the way, I was able to achieve a speed of 107 Mb/s (once) with my router in the loop, but not the 115 Mb/s I was getting with my computer connected directly to the modem.
I guess my next choice is to try different brands of routers and see what happens.

There is no such issue with the router E4200 which creates such kind of problem. Just it requires proper settings on the router’s web interface. So before upgrading the third party firmware you should have done the following troubleshooting steps:
A] With the help of Cisco Connect Software (if at all you have installed the router with the help of this software)
1] Open the software and go to the option which says "Router Settings"
2] Then click on the option which says "Advanced Settings" which will take you to the router's configuration page.
3] On that same setup page reduce the MTU value to 1400 from Auto
B] If you haven't installed Cisco Connect then you can log on to the router's user interface using it's default IP address in the browser which is 192.168.1.1 and type in 'admin' as the password leaving the username field blank. This will take you to the router's web interface and then follow steps as mentioned above to make the changes.
If still you are getting same IP address then try to reduce the LAN card speed. Here is the step:
START--> right-click My Network Places and click Properties
right-click on the device and click properties
    Click on the CONFIGURE button
Select the ADVANCED tab and the settings you can alter are listed on the left.

  • Sudden drop in download speed and increase in uplo...

I have seen a number of discussions on this on the forum but they all seem to just fade with no resolution.
I have HH3 with Infinity and up to about 4 weeks ago I was delighted with it.  Consistent 21Mbps download and 6Mbps upload.  Then one afternoon the speeds just went sillly - download went down to about 6Mbps and upload to about 10Mbps.  It's been more or less like that ever since.
It's wireless so thought there must be some interference somewhere.  I've installed inSSIDer 3 to check for other router interference and there isn't any (I'm the only one on channel 6).  I've restarted everything a number of times and given it weeks to pace. I've switched off everything that uses the router and even sat right next to it but all to no avail.  The speeds just won't budge from these new low speeds.  I've ethernet attached and run tests and it looks fine - 53.5Mbps upload which is great.   So the problem is somewhere between coming into the house and my laptop.   I thought it might be a problem with my wireless adapter but the problem is the same on another couple of laptops and a desktop.  Even the iPod has slowed down.
I have found an uknown device on the wireless and every time I delete it it just comes back but I did manage to remove it for a few minutes - enough time to run the test - and the speed problem was stilll there.  I've looked at entries for this strange uknown device but as I said above, the discussion just dwindled into nothing without resolution.  I tried the sugggestion to limit access to the internet for this device but it didn't seem to help.  It may be a red herring anyway although the mac address doesn't seem to match anything in my house. An internal device to the router maybe?
Anyway - I'm getting more and more frustrated as I've seen what speed is possible and I want it back !!!
So - any help would be hugely appreciated

Sorry - yep I meant download.  I was in a bit of a hurry and went off piste.
I have been so close to the router with my laptop that I could have rested it on the router.  However, I will go round one more time to see if there is something that we started when it all went wrong such as a new device of some kind.  Clutching at straws but worth a try. It might be that an old device has gone bad so I'll do what I can with those (switching things off).
yep rebooted router a couple of times and allowed a few weeks for it to settle.
inSSIDer shows strength fluctuating between -48 and 50 although I dimly recall that it was -42 when I was getting the good speeds.  Hub claims 130Mbps and device claims 54Mbps.
If all of that fails to work I'lll try resetting to factory settings.  It just seems odd that one minute it's fine then the next it just goes into  snail mode.
Thanks for the sugggestions - very welcome ...

  • Experiencing Extremely Slow Upload / Download Speeds AGAIN - Bradenton, FL

Experiencing very slow internet speeds for the last few days in Bradenton, FL area (4 Mbps / 4 Mbps). The exact same issue occurred approximately 2 months ago and took over two weeks to resolve. Turns out it was an area wide equipment problem that Verizon wouldn't address until they received a sufficient number of customer complaints. Very frustrating. Paying for sub-standard service. Looking to switch to Brighthouse in the New Year as this appears to be a never ending problem.

Here we are, 9 months later and I am AGAIN experiencing slow internet speeds. I am paying for fios speeds of up to 50/35 but am seeing 5/15 instead. This problem keeps recurring time and time again. Tech support refuses to do anything because I can get normal speeds to my nearest hub, but ANY hub beyond that is useless. When I do speed tests using other methods, I show slow speeds. I was on the phone with tech support for 2 hours only to be told that all the network technicians and gone home.
This problem crops up every so often. Tech support will not address the issue until a sufficient number of customers call in to complain. Each time the problem is finally solved weeks later and was due to some sort of equipment failure on Verizon's end.
Speedtest.net testing out of Ft. Myers is giving me 5.84 Mbps down and 14.87 Mbps up.
Speakeasy.net testing out of Atlanta is giving me 11.45 Mbps down and 23.54 Mbps up.
In the past I my router has been replaced and I have been told that the problem is with all of my computers. Hmmmm... I pay over $200 per month for fios service which includes tv and digital phone. I recently renewed my contract for 2 years thinking that this problem would not come back but it has for the THIRD time in one year. I have a 30 day money back guarantee with no penalty if I cancel my contract. At this point, I am so frustrated that I will be calling Verizon to cancel my service effective the end of the month.

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Airport express reduces download speed by over 50%, any ideas on how to improve

My ISP provides 15MBPS download speed, which when I hook my PC direct to the modem, I get about 14-15 MBPS download speed.  When I run the speed test again using the airport wireless network, the download speed drops to between 3-5MBPS.  Any ideas on what I could do to improve the speed with my wireless

I actually have two Airports, one  is located in our bedroom which is hooked to my modem and the other is an extention which is located in our family room.  The total distance between the modem and our family room is no more than about 60 feet and there are a couple of walls between the two.
If the main AirPort is located in the bedroom and family room is approximately 60 feet away...then the "extending" AirPort should be located at an approximate mid point between the two rooms.
The way that you have things configured now, the signal from the "main" AirPort must travel all the way to the family room. It has lost a great deal of strength and speed by that point.
The AirPort in the family room can only "extend" the speed that it receives. It can make the signal go further, but it cannot make the speed go faster. Think of it as a repeater, not a booster. As it stands now, you are receiving little to no benefit from the extending AirPort in the family room.
Experiment with the location of the extending AirPort at maybe 1/2 to 2/3 the distance from the bedroom to the family room. Minimize any obstructions in the signal path as much as possible. A typical sheetrock wall will absorb 10-15% of the signal (and speed), just to give you a quick example.
Get the AirPorts up as high as possible. They should not be down low on the wall or behind anything. They need a free look into the room.
There may likely be other things that we need to do to help things along, but locating the extending device correctly will be a start. Give that a try and report on your results.

  • Why the sudden download speed increase?

BT Infinity was installed on the 1st February and although my upload speed doubled to 1.62Mbps my download speed was the same as my standard BT Broadband was at 5Mbps or just below. I was on the point of ringing a BT 'Techie' as late yesterday afternoon my Internet access had become painfully slow. In despair I turned everything off at the mains and when I switched on again the following day my download speed had increased to 32Mbps!
Could anybody explain why leaving everything off overnight would result in such a dramatic increase please? I'm certainly not complaining...just curious. The speed increase is reasonably constant on two wired PC's and one wireless Laptop.

    Hi,
Did the OR Eng leave you with only 5Mb D/L for infinity????????. He should not have done that, any way as your profile would have been set at say 3500kbps and for some reason DLM never picked up the speed for you, Now when you rebooted your system the HH3 picked up your profile to what it should have been. Basically that's it some can go into more detail if you want.

sky twitter account a customer ask why sky go streams are worst then sd and yet bt and eurosports apps stream in hd. Reply from mod, oh thats easy the files for hd are some huge that sky go can't play them and no app can stream hd due to this and so when they say they are they're really sd streams, if there was any way around this we would have done it now.

  • Download speeds suddenly dropped

Over the past year and a half i havent had any problems with my service up until 2 days ago. Our download speeds went from 350KB to 28kb - 50kb... (we have the 3Mbps plan) the modem is set to bridge and connected to a linksys router. I've tried power cycling the modem and router without any luck. I've also tried resetting the modem back to the default settings and plugging the modem directly to 3 different pcs with the same results
    Modem: Westell 6100F

#1 Margin (dB) - Signal to noise margin. 6 is pretty bad possibly unusable at times, 20 is very good. You normally want 12dB or better IIRC from back in my DSL days. The higher the number, the better to a point.
Line Attenuation - Measure the amount the signal has degraded. Below 20dB is excellent, above 50 is poor, fill in the dots for anything in between.
#2  Did you try connecting your modem directly to the NID?
    Points to: http://www.dslreports.com/faq/1317
#3 If not, please do and retest those margins and Line Attenuation.

  • Download speed will slow to nothing. Must continually manually pause and resume to force the connection to the download to complete. How to fix?

Have recently tried to download multiple files from multiple locations. These files will show up as downloading in the download manager. After 5-10 seconds, the download will slow to a crawl. In the window for the download manager, it will state that the download still has a download speed. When reviewing the time and progress, as well as monitoring my actual inbound/outbound internet traffic, I can conclude the download does not have any actual download speed remaining (that is, 0 kilobytes/sec).
To complete the download, I must manually click on the file being downloaded, force it to pause and then force it to resume. This will cause the download to actually download again for about 5-10 seconds before the download manager states that the download speed is slowing down (when in fact it goes back to 0 kilobytes/sec). This process must be repeated until the file is fully downloaded.
Also observed is that there will suddenly be more of a connection, downloading just a bit of the file, before going back to 0 kbps. This will happen every so often and is much slower than manually pausing/resuming. If left to its own devices for long, it also has a chance that it will decide that the file is complete and report that it has the full file size of the download. Review of the actual downloaded file shows that the file is incomplete for the supposed size of the download.
This should not be an issue with internet usage. There is no inbound/outbound traffic for my connection when the download speeds hit 0kbps. Loading webpages during this time load fine, only the download is unstable.

Problem Solved!!! :) No need Of Any AntiVirus !
Got back into '''Firefox 5.0.1''' !!
    Its Working Great!

Have been running this configuration for over a year and download speeds @ 50Mbs for the iMac that is wired to the time capsule and an iMac that is wirelessly connected to time capsule.  AppeTV is hardwired to 10/100 ethernet switch as well, and has never had a problem before download / streaming movies.
In the past week, the wired download speed of the iMac has crawled down to 5-6 Mbs.  Wireless connections are .5-1 Mbs.
I have unplugged all devices, waited 10 mins, plugged in router/modem, waited 5 mins, plugged in switch, waited 1 min, plugged in TC, waited 5 mins, ran a test on Speedtest.net - still getting 5 Mbs wired and slower on wifi.  If I unplug the ethernet cable from the TC (WAN) and plug it into the iMac directly, I get 57 Mbs download speed on Speedtest.net.  Why would the TC suddenly be slowing down download speeds.  In all configurations, the upload speed is still 10-11 Mbs.  It appears that only download speeds are affected.  Any suggestions?

Yes, I've tried moving the ethernet cable from the iMac to a different LAN port on the TC.  Same slow speed.  The wireless download speeds are slow too, seems like the WAN connection is "throttling" download speeds no matter if it's wired or wireless.
I have pressed the reset button on the back of the TC until the front light blinks amber.  Then I went thru the setup to have it connected Ethernet, Bridge mode, create a wireless network, and DHCP from the router.  I got 12 Mbs download speed for the wired connection after doing this the first time.  Fifteen minutes later I tested it again using Speedtest.net and the download speed for the wired connection had fallen to 5 Mbs.  I unplugged the TC, waited a half hour, held the reset button down while I plugged it in, went thru the setup again, and still had a download speed of only 4 Mbs when I was done.
I assumed if the switch on the TC went bad that it wouldn't work at all, not just be slow.
    Any other suggestions?

  • WRT310N Playstation 3 Slow Download speed and general lag

Hey guys, I just recently bought the WRT310N and got both of my computers working with it. One is wired directly into the router, while the other is running off wireless. My Playstation 3 is able to connect to the router but I am getting an extremely slow connection speed.
Right now, both PC's get about 6.4-6.5 Mbps download speed while my Playstation is anywhere from 600 Kbs to 1.2 Mbps. I have plugged in my Playstation 3 directly into the modem and got a speed of 3.2 Mbps and was downloaded a demo very fast, but I do not recieve anywhere near those results when using it wireless.
Any advice? I have tried opening the ports, but that only seemed to slow it down. A couple of days ago I opened the ports specific to the game NHL 10 and for two days I was getting such a good speed in the game that it felt like I was playing offline, which was great! Then this morning, it just seemed do a complete 180. Now when I play the game I get an extreme amount of lag, and my other games like CoD4 get random lag spikes. Like, I'll be running and I get a lag spike which seems to happen fairly consistently every minute or so.
Any advice? Should I try opening the ports again or what?

I think you need to adjust the wireless settings of your Router, The wireless settings on your Router must have been setup to its default that's the reason you are receiving low signal strength on your PS3.
Open an Internet Explorer browser page on your wired computer(desktop). In the address bar type - 192.168.1.1 and press Enter...Leave Username blank & in Password use admin in lower case...
For Wireless Settings, please do the following : -
    Click on the Wireless tab
    - Here select manual configuration...Wireless Network mode should be mixed...
    - Provide a unique name in the Wireless Network Name (SSID) box in order to differentiate your network from your neighbours network...
    - Set the Radio Band to Standard-20MHz and change the Standard channel to 11-2.462GHz...Wireless SSID broadcast should be Enabled and then click on Save Settings...
Please make a note of Wireless Network Name (SSID) as this is the Network Identifier...
    For Wireless Security : -
Click on the Sub tab under Wireless > Wireless Security...
Change the Wireless security mode to WPA, For Encryption, select TKIP...For Passphrase input your desired WPA Key. For example , MySecretKey , This will serve as your network key whenever you connect to your wireless network. Do NOT give this key to anyone and remember the key.
NOTE : Passphrase should be more that 8 characters...
    Click on Advanced Wireless Settings
Change the Beacon Interval to 75 >>Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304, Change the RTS Threshold to 2304 >>Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • Loss of download speed using airport extreme and express.

I have Wifi using an Airport extreme base station and an airport express extender.  However, the download speed drops from 21 Mbps to 8 Mbps. Any suggestions to boost the express other than an ethernet connection which would be difficult.

Temporarily, power down the AirPort Express and take speed measurement at that exact location.
Whatever that is.....likely in the 8-10 Mpbs range......is what the Express will try to "extend".
In other words, the Express can only extend the bandwidth or speed that it receives. It cannot make the connection that it receives go any faster. In that regard, the term "repeater" is probably a more accurate description of what the Express is trying to accomplish.
If you want the Express to extend faster speeds, then it must be located closer to the AirPort Extreme. In addition, anything that you can do to reduce any obstructions in the signal path between the AirPorts will help.
Ideally, you want a line-of-sight relationship between the AirPorts to help reduce the amount of speed loss that occurs with any wireless connection.
