SUDDENLY SLEEPING Sudden death.

SUDDENLY SLEEPING. Like, I'd be typing along, with the powercord plugged in and a full battery charge, and the display goes blank and the whole machine sounds like it's going into hibernation. somtimes I have to take the main battery out and press the power key so there is no light coming from the pumping heart light in front of the PB. After that I plug the powercord back in and VOILA it starts up, with a warning that the clock is set to a date before 19 somthing and some apps will behave erraticly. the clock actually set it self to 1970. I have done all the resettings of Prams etc etc, I have even changed the logicboard, but still, ZZZzzzZZ sudden sleep/death. should I change the battery within the machin, could the two batterys within be FLAT/DEAD, is this the problem ?? HELP, sudden sleep.

SUDDENLY SLEEPING. Like, I'd be typing along, with the powercord plugged in and a full battery charge, and the display goes blank and the whole machine sounds like it's going into hibernation. I can always get it back just by pressing a key and waiting a few seconds, but it's very strange and disturbing, and besides, it's totally aggravating! Have anyone found a solution to this bloody problem. please HELP... I am now on 10.4.5

Mac OS X: Why your Mac might not sleep or stay in sleep mode
Learn why your Mac might not go to sleep when you expect it to, or why it might not stay in sleep mode. What's sleep mode? It's a low power, energy-saving feature of that offers both environmental and economic benefits, as well as helping to extend the life of batteries and displays.
On the other hand, you probably don't want the computer to sleep at certain times even if you're not using the keyboard or mouse, such as when you are:
    While watching a DVD movie
Listening to your iTunes music library
    Running an automated backup
Away from your computer while downloading large files
Tip: For troubleshooting tips, go to the "How can I determine what is causing a sleep issue and resolve it?" section at the bottom of this article.
Why doesn't the computer go to sleep at the expected time based on Energy Saver settings?
You can configure Energy Saver preferences to set your computer to automatically sleep after a specified period of time; an internal counter called a "sleep timer" monitors the amount of time your computer has been inactive. When the counter's time matches the amount of time you specified, the computer enters sleep mode and displays a pulsing power light.
Some things reset the sleep timers, preventing the computer from sleeping:
Hard drive access (even if you're not using the computer, a running application might be accessing your drive, such as when downloading a large file or listening to music in iTunes)
Moving the mouse or using a portable Mac's trackpad, pressing a mouse button, or pressing a key on the keyboard
Some System Preferences settings (see below)
    Open applications (see below)
    Input devices (see below)
    Expansion cards (see below)
Additional drives, such as USB, FireWire, DVD, or CD drives (see below)
Some System Preferences settings affect sleep
    Energy Saver
Energy Saver is a System Preference that can help you optimize energy settings as well as sleep times and processor usage. Note that processor controls are not used for Intel-based Macs because they have a built-in power-saving feature. Only PowerPC-based Macs display processor controls.
    Bluetooth
You can allow Bluetooth devices to wake a sleeping computer by enabling "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" in Bluetooth preferences. Simply having a bluetooth device paired does not prevent a system from sleeping.
    Spotlight
Your computer will not sleep if Spotlight is indexing content, because that requires hard disk access. For example, if you just installed or reinstalled Mac OS X, Spotlight may need a while to index content.
    Sharing
Network activity can reset the sleep timer, too. For example, leaving a self-refreshing Web page open in a Web browser.
In these situations, the display will sleep (unless Energy Saver preferences is configured to never let the display sleep) but the processor will continue to be awake and the power light will remain on.
Keyboard, mouse, other input devices can affect sleep
Keyboard presses and mouse button clicks can wake a sleeping computer. Mouse movement alone will only wake a sleeping display. Even though your Mac may be in sleep mode, it remains aware of keyboard presses and mouse clicks. If you move a mouse, press a key, or use a different input device, the sleep timer counter will reset.
    Open applications can affect sleep
Software that accesses the hard drive will delay sleep mode until it is either quit or done accessing the drive, for example:
A self-refreshing Web page open in Safari.
    Songs playing in iTunes.
A movie disc playing in DVD Player.
However, this can also occur in subtle ways you might not expect:
An application window might display text that periodically changes (such as a clock).
If an application uses a custom font to display text but the font resource is marked purgeable, then at some point the memory manager will purge the font from memory. When the application tries to draw text using that font again, it will be loaded from the hard drive, resetting the sleep timer.
Applications can be designed to keep the system awake and prevent idle sleep indefinitely. In developer lingo, an application may explicitly prevent system sleep by calling IORegisterForSystemPower(), and calling IOCancelPowerChange() when it receives a power management kIOMessageCanSystemSleep notification.
    Expansion cards can affect sleep
Some PCI expansion cards can prevent sleep. If a card's Mac OS X device driver is not properly power managed, the computer will be unable to safely remove power from it, preventing the system from entering full sleep. Instead, the system enters a state named "Doze".
Some kinds of PCI cards prevent any kind of sleep mode--your system will not go into low-power mode during long periods of inactivity. The computer fans may run excessively when this is the case.
Other hard drives (USB, FireWire, ATA), optical media drives (DVD, CD) can affect sleep
If there is disk accesses activity at least once a minute on disks such as ATA drives, FireWire drives, and USB drives, the computer will not idle sleep.
How can I determine what is causing a sleep issue and resolve it?
As mentioned above, these are the most likely causes and solutions for sleep issues:
Sharing preferences: Enabling sharing for any connections can potentially disable sleep. Turn off file sharing if it's not being used.
Bluetooth settings: Bluetooth can wake your computer if you set the "Allow Bluetooth devices to wake this computer" checkbox in Bluetooth System Preferences.
Is a keyboard and mouse connected and working correctly?
Do you have any other external USB or FireWire devices connected? Try removing them one by one or disconnect when not in use.
Is Spotlight indexing? This can take anywhere from several minutes to several hours after a new installation. Indexing prevents idle sleep.
Additional Software: Try a Safe Boot to help isolate a software issue.
Sound check: Put your ear near your computer. Do you hear the sounds of hard disk access (a clicking or "clacking")?
Energy Saver settings: If the computer and display sleep timers are set to Never, the computer will not sleep.

  • Mac Pro 1,1 goes to sleep suddenly. Replace nVidia 7300?

Over the last couple days, my Mac Pro 1,1 has been going to sleep suddenly and only a hard restart can recover it. When I restart I get the following panic report. Does this imply a bad video card? Or is my Mac Pro dying a slow death. Interestingly enough, I haven't had the problem today at all. Anyone know what's going on?

  • Sudden Sleep and restart

    hi,
i installed the new security updates apple released (april-20-2007) ever since my imac G5 has been acting up. it has gone to sleep suddenly 5 times since then and suddenly restarted twice since then. it doesn't warn before doing any.
and the systems speed appears to have slowed down.
    what i have tried.
checked to energy setting (system preferences)
    restarted the computer myself
    it still does the same.
    i need help

If you only have 6 GB of free space, that's far too little and is probably causing your problem. Try transferring your video and/or music and any other large files to an external drive or a DVD and see if that helps,

  • Macbook suddenly sleeps after 10.9.2

    Hi.
Roughly after 10 days of upgrading to 10.9.2, my air has been very annoying. It abruptly sleeps particularly when I move it or receive a Skype call. And I hear scratching noises a lot. Could this be a hardware issue rather than an upgrade problem? Because it happens frequently whne i lift it or turn it, I feel it might be a hardware problem, but I never had problems before the upgrade.
Has anybody experienced this sudden sleep thing?

I don't have an external monitor connected to test this, but trying rebooting your Mac without the external display connected, then plug it back in.

  • "Sleep of death" question and some observations

I just recently upgraded to an S3 from a Fascinate, and I've been impressed so far.  The only thing I really didn't like about my Fascinate was that it would suddenly freeze or crash one every week or two, and the only thing I could do was open the case, remove the battery, and then put the battery back in.  Then I could reboot the phone and all was well.  Well, after not using my S3 for an hour or so, I tried to wake it up and nothing happened.  I couldn't turn it off (or on) either.  Sleep of death.  I had to open the case, remove and re-insert the battery to use the phone again.  Is this a common problem?  What could be causing it?  Is there any other way to fix it?
Overall, I really like the S3.  It's a significant upgrade from the Fascinate.  Screen quality and size (larger but not too big), processor speed, and 4G LTE are great.  I have a seven year old iPod that is still hanging in there, but I hope to use my S3 in my car (2012 Prius II, no Nav or Entunes) to listen to my music if and when my iPod dies.  I can't get music to play on my car stereo when I plug my S3 into my car's USB port (I'm told its because the S3 doesn't support mass storage mode).  But, after uploading some iTunes music to Google Play, I can play it with my S3 over Bluetooth audio.  The sound quality is good, but not quite as good as a USB connection is.  I'm experimenting with various audio settings in Google Play Music to see if I can enhance the sound quality.  If anyone knows how to play audio with an S3 over a USB connection, I'd be interested in finding out.
I haven't used the camera very much yet (I have had the S3 only two days) but the few photos I have taken look good.  Battery life seems to be improved over the Fascinate.  Call quality also seems up a notch.  I haven't yet tried some other features, and still others i have yet to discover!  This phone comes with very good reviews, and I can see why.
I can also say that I was very pleased with the service I was given at the VZW store in Augusta, Maine, when I went to upgrade my phone.  So far, other than the sleep of death issue, I'm a happy camper.

Stop using the stock browser and use Chrome instead.  See if the "sleep of death" goes away.

When the slate fells in sleep, it is never able to wake up by press the power button, or the screen may response, but immediately turn off the screen. Only way to revive the slate by pull off the power and power back again.
There was another thread reported the similar issue, but 7 months no update/response from HP employee

  • Mac Mini 2011 Sleep of Death

I have a Mac Mini 2011 with Lion factory installed configured with an original Apple Keyboard and a LG - HDMI monitor.
If the Mini goes to sleep either manually using the Apple Menu or based on Settings , it does not wake up !
Any  subsequent attempt to wake the mac by moving the mouse results in either nothing happening  / a system power down.
Restarting the Mac  is then  impossible. The Mini just makes JET engine level fan noise and does not boot.
Only after PMU/SMC resets and starting in Safe Mode ( Command +S when powering ) does the Mini come alive again.  What a nightmare !
My only  solution till now is to put the Sleep settings to "NEVER"
Surely there is a way around this .... sleep of death ???

I have tried to eliminate all issues related to connected periphals first as Apple is really not going to find a solution if it relates to these. I changed the HDMI cable to abrand new expensive cable as a first step. Then I connected only one USB Time Machine Hard Disk 1TB. The PC is now waking out of manually induced sleep. I am not brave enough to remove the "Never Sleep " automatically settings as yet.  Also downloaded a free utility named ONYX to do a system clean. They have a version for both Lion and Snow Leopard - just Google ONYX to see what it does. For now, at least the Mac Mini is working . Hope it lasts.

  • Sleep of death problem Tablet S r5

My Tablet S suffers sleep of death problem after upgrading to ICS r5.
I did factory reset several days ago and it seemed the problem has gone.
But from yesterday it has begun again and happened twice today.
Overall I am satisfied with the upgrade, better wifi and less flickering.
Hope that problem won't get worse.

    Hello,
    Thank you for your post
We are currently investigating why the power button intermittently will not wake the S1 Tablet from sleep.
Do you see a Green Blinking Indicator each time this occurs?
for the time being, performing a [ [url=http://www.kb.sony.com/selfservice/microsites/search.do?cmd=displayKC&docType=kc&externalId=C1023464&sliceId=1&docTypeID=DT_KNOWLEDGEARTICLES_1_1&dialogID=203829332&stateId=0%200%20203827592:2fneqb0t]Soft Reset[/url:2fneqb0t] ] will allow a power on.

  • Mac pro maverick suddenly sleep whilst in use

    Hi
I have a Mac Pro currently using Maverick software OS X 10.9.4.
Two days ago I took it in to the apple store to get the hard drive replaced and now my laptop suddenly goes to sleep whilst in use.
I tried clicking the track pad and the keyboard to wake it up as usual but it remains on sleep mode.
Eventually after a good 15 minutes the display will come back on itself.
    Can someone suggest a solution?
    Thanks

    Reset SMC.     http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3964
    Choose the method for:
"Resetting SMC on portables with a battery you should not remove on your own".
If this does not help, you have to take the computer to the Apple store to have it checked again.
    Best.

  • Wallstreet suddenly sleeps during boot

I was recently given a 266mhz Wallstreet with a cracked screen and broken solder joint on the power socket. I successfully re-soldered the power socket, and was able to install an early version of OSX, upgrade the hard drive, go back to OS9.22 (so I could try installing 10.3 using XPostFacto). The problem started after installing my new screen. Booting into OS9.22, everything looks great until the desktop is displayed. I see the menu bar along the top, and suddenly it goes to sleep with a flashing green light. I tried booting to my OS9 and my OSX CDs to try reinstalling, and it does the same thing. As soon as it displays the desktop on the boot disk, my Wallstreet enters sleep mode. Most of the time it won't wake up regardless of what I try. A couple times I noticed that it tried to wake up (showed desktop for a second before sleeping again) - possibly on the bootdisk attempts.
I tried re-seating everything inside, including pressing hard on the processor board. Removed the keyboard, CD & floppy drives (I have no working batteries). Removed the top memory module. Still no improvement.
    What could cause this?

    Mana,
I would try this test: Remove the HD, then boot to a CD. If the Wallstreet finally stays awake, your HD is probably affecting the magnetic sleep switch. Read this reply I made to a user with a similar problem:

  • Sudden sleep problem

My Desktop G4 has started to suddenly and unexpectedly go into sleep mode. The screen goes black and the CPU stops humming but the machine can then be revived in the normal way by pressing the on/off button at the bottom of the LCD screen. The finder then reappears with no loss of data. I have confirmed that this is indeed sleep mode and not the much posted SPOS problem (see other posts) by checking the console log.
What is odd about all this is that I never let teh CPU go to sleep by having the 'inactive' slider in the Energy Saver control panel all the way over to 'never' and not toggling the 'put hard disks to sleep when possible' toggle.
This has happened three or four times in a two hour working session today so a fix would be appreciated.

Here's a more complete help sheet for your issue (Mac sleeps when it should not, am I right?)
If your Mac happily goes to sleep but won't wake up--Hold down the power switch to force-reboot your machine and get it running again.
Don't worry-your Mac isn't narcoleptic. Its Open Firmware system or NVRAM (nonvolatile RAM) is likely corrupt, and your Mac can't remember how to wake up.
Restart your Mac and immediately hold down the Command-Option-O-F key combo until you see a somewhat intimidating command-line display that ends with the Open Fimware prompt. Type the following line:
    reset-nvram
press the return key on your keyboard
    set-defaults
    press return
    reset-all
    press return
Your Mac will reboot. Once it's running, put it back to sleep to test. If the problem recurs your Energy Saver preferences may be the culprit. Delete the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file (go to Finder/Hard drive/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration)--don't worry, your Mac will regenerate a new one--and then restart to see if that rights the wrong.
    Still did'nt work? Try deleting;
-/Users/username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systemuiserver.plist--(username is your name or System Administrators name)
    And;
    -/Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.AutoWake.plist
A restart is very important after deleting these plists.
Some, in these forums, have had luck fixing sleep issues downloading the Combo update from this site (yours may be corrupt), not Software Update, disconnect all firewire + USB devices except keyboard + mouse, Repair Permissions, re-install update, Repair Permissions again + try.
Yours would be the 10.4.7 Combo update. Others reading, download the combo update that applies to you!
I would also try using Disk Utility to repair your startup disk (hard drive) as shown in Dr.Smokes Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption.
    Cheers!

  • Sudden Sleep When Encoding H.264

    Hi All,
When encoding H.264 video on my dual 2GHz G5, the computer suddenly goes into sleep mode.
When I try to wake it up, it goes into sleep mode again after a couple of seconds and this continues!
It only occurs with the H.264 codec, not regular MPEG4.
I have tried using various applications, same result.
(QuickTime, ffmpegX, Handbrake & MPEG Streamclip)
Appreciate any help you can give...
    Kind regards,
    Flemming Bengtsson
    PowerMac G5 Dual 2GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

    OK. Gaining.
It may be a hardware issue. You could run the Hardware test (on the Tiger DVD) and maybe it will point out some issues.
I would try your powerful Mac with a different monitor and different cable connections.
The "external" drive test you've already done. And this was done via an "update" to Tiger or a "fresh" install?
What third party hardware could be causing an issue? The monitor? The video card? A bad cable connection?
Last would be the destination location of the save. Have you tried "local" saves and exports?

  • 4sns/1/40000000: tlop-69.187 error, fans and sudden sleep

Changed out hard drive on Intel iMac 20" mid-2007 iMac7,1. Fans spin louder than normal, but not at full blast. After 30 minutes or so of use, the iMac will suddenly go to sleep. I'll wake it back up and it will go to sleep within minutes again. I'l let it cool down for an hour or so and it will work fine for a while then do it again.
Apple Hardware Test, version 3A141, reports the following error: 4sns/1/40000000: tlop-69.187. From what I can gather this error indicates a temp sensor or logic board failure. I suspect a possible hard drive sensor or fan/sensor failure. This model also has an LCD temp sensor that you must unplug and plug back in when removing the display to replace a hard drive.
Does anyone have any way of know what this code means exaclty? Specifically the 69.187 part. Thanks in advance.
I have reset SMC multiple times and reset PRAM multiple times. No affect. I am also running HDD Fan Control, but it strangley has little control over the fans - if any. Before when I've used it you could make a change and the fans would respond within seconds. Temperature Monitor, smc Fan Control and HDD Fan control do not show any 0 sensors and all are at or less than 40 degrees celcius or so - with the exception of the Display Screen Proximity sensor that runs around 60-68 degress celcius. I've also installed a clean install of Lion on an external drive and it did the same thing. Even does it booted into Windows 7 on bootcamp, so I know it is not a mac OS X system problem. And I've been resetting SMC and PRAM on almost every reboot just to rule that out.
It was working fine before the hard drive upgrade, so I hope it is only a loose sensor wire, or a bad fan, or anything other than the logic board.
    Thanks so much.

The plot thickens. I procured a copy of Apple Service Diagnostics 3S116 for my iMac, and it reports the following errors:
Temp Sensor - Ambient air test 1 - Sensor reads within operating range.
-Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - The SMC could not initialize this sensor
    - T E S T  F A I L E D -
Temp Sensor - GPU 0 Die Temp test 1 - Sensor reads within operating range.
-Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - The SMC could not initialize this sensor
    - T E S T  F A I L E D -
Temp Sensor - GPU 0 Proximity Test 1 - Sensor reads within operating range.
-Check to ensure that sensor reads within operating range.
ERROR - The SMC could not initialize this sensor

Temp Sensor - LCD Proximity Test 1 - Sensor reads within operating range.

ERROR - The SMC could not initialize this sensor

Hard Drive test 6 - New Drive SMART Data Test
-Check the SMART data on a new drive.
ERROR - No SMART attributes to check
    - T E S T  F A I L E D -
So, I'm at a loss now. That's a lot of errors. Either one sensor is throwing everything off, or I have more of a problem than I thought. I think I'll go ahead and replace the LCD temp sensor and cable and go from there.
This would have to happen my last semester of grad achool when stress and assignments are at a fever pitch. lol

  • Macbook Aluminum falls a sleep suddenly

    Hi,
since yesterday my Macbook falls suddenly asleep. It is plugged into the charger and I don't close the monitor. Just very suddenly it falls asleep. Could somebody explain me why is this happen? I checked the energy saving options and if the computer is working with the charger it shouldn't fall asleep.
    Thank you very much
