  • Safari 6.1 Suddenly Slowing MacBook Pro to a Crawl

I know that it's risky to blame system problems on particular programs, but here I really fee like it's Safari.
In the past month or so I've been getting the spinning beach ball more and more often, and I can't tell you how many times I've had to Force Quit Safari.
Very rarely, it hangs the computer completely and won't even let me Force Quit anything.
I've repaired Permissions several time and verified my HD -- no problems.
Is there some particularly evil combination of some program interacting with Safari that's causing this? I really have not installed anything weird in the past few months but that spinning ball has become my nemesis!
Oh for the days of DiskWarrior or even good old Norton Utilities . . . I used to be able to defragment my drive with Classic but now it seems that you can't defragment your drive.
Here is a typical list of programs that will all be opened at the same time -- worst case scenario -- as Safari 6.1:
    Photoshop CS 3
    Mail
    SpamSieve
    Sometimes Preview
    Some times TexEdit Pro
    Sometimes iTunes
I'm running OS 10.8.5 on a standard Mid-2012 MacBook Pro bought refurbished from the Apple Store Canada.
    Any ideas greatly appreciated!
    Nick

Whatever you do, don't waste money on "Disk Warrior." It's completely useless if you have adequate backups, which you must have. If you don't have a current backup, back up immediately, before you do anything else. Ask if you need guidance.
When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of it useless for solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • Slow Macbook Pro- please help, I don't understand previous advice.

    Hello all,
I have a very slow Macbook Pro running on Lion 10.7.3.
I looked up this problem on the forums before I sent this message but I didn't quite understand the advice. I have been on something called Disk Utility and Activity Monitor but don't really understand what I'm looking for. It seems a large percentage of my mac is 'idle' if that makes sense. Someone said to look at Page Out but I really don't understand what that means and what sort of numbers are normal.
I do have some storage left so I don't think it could be that. A lot of my gigabytes seem to be taken up by movies and 'other'. I've tried deleted a load of videos but it hardly made a difference. I have Mac Mail and it seems very slow on my Macbook compared to on my Ipad and iphone. iCal is also very slow on here and it always takes a while to load internet pages. It isnt the wifi connection.
Please help and bear in mind I am by no means a Mac whizz so you might have to talk in layman's terms!
    Thanks,
    Amy

If you have more than ten or so files or folders on your Desktop, move them, temporarily at least, somewhere else in your home folder.
If iCloud is enabled, disable it.
Disconnect all wired peripherals. Launch the usual set of applications you use when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ If you’re running Mac OS X 10.7 or later, open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the page that opens.
    Select the CPU tab.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
    Step 2
Launch the Console application in the same way as above, and select “kernel.log” from the file list. Post the dozen or so most recent messages in the log — the text, please, not a screenshot.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Do not post many repetitions of the same message.

You have only about 10 percent free drive space left. 50gB is enough to run the computer but, if it gets much smaller, that can slow how Virtual Memory (VM) works as the system has to more carefully search the remaining space for qualified blocks to which to write data.
Adding RAM will reduce the writes-to-disk by VM but you should probably consider a little holiday disk cleaning of stuff you no longer use.
    This concerns me:

That is a LOT of log-in items for a compute with 4GB RAM. Some are hard to avoid but Excel is a big program that can be easily launched from the Dock. I don't know what "Inspiration 8" is but likely the same advice will apply.

  • Yet again slow MacBook Pro

    Hey guys,
so I basically fixed my slow MacBook Pro about 2 weeks ago and it worked fine, but as of a about a week ago its just back to being just as bad as it was before and I can't seem to find any solutions.
    I'm using a MacBook Pro 4GB DDR and 2.53GHz 2 Duo running on Mac OS X 10.5.8.
I've already looked for spikes in console and Activity Monitor and nothing to be found there other than a rather slow Firefox and generally slow Browsers.
I've deinstalled Akamai but it's apparently still on here and still running Errors but I can't erase it with just the console erase commands.
    Heeeelp please

Especially Firefox and Safari but Pages and iTunes are starting to run slow too, and by running slow I mean the applications are starting up way slower than before and aren't running as smoothly anymore (kinda choppy page opening, recent crashing and non-responsivenes).
Nope I tried it on 3 different internet connections and two of them were the highest connection rates available here in Germany so not the connection.

slow macbook pro.  everything works, just slower than christmas 1985…slow.
I've looked through several posts searching for my solution, not sure how to test my memory - may be my problem - that and i'm only running 2GB RAM.  I'd go upgrade that tomorrow if that would fix my issue.
also, battery seems to not last like it should, even after replacing the battery.
Any solutions or options for me?
    Thanks crew -

Hi Gary, I may have a simple solution for you, and hope it's not too late.
    Try to uninstall AppTrap !
I have a MacBook Pro 15" with 16GB RAM and two SSD in it. So it can't be slow But recently I saw that my CPU was hot (70-75°C) and fans were spinning even with all apps closed. Same problem with the battery shorter than ever. In Activity Monitor I saw that AppTrap (that you have too) was taking 2,88GB of my RAM… So I disabled it on the pref panel and uncheck launch at start, and I quitted it in the activity monitor. My CPU becomes cool again (40°C) and fans stopped instantly.
I really hope this will help you !

  • Extremely slow macbook pro performance

I have a 4GB Macbook Pro 13 inch, less than 1/2 the memory is in use.  Computer startup can take up to 10 minutes, and opening any app can take 1-2 minutes.  Apps are constantly stalling, and Safari is constantly showing the spinning wheel of doom.  It's running OS X 10.9.5.  It's at the point where my iPhone is a much better option that using my Mac.  Any suggestions on speeding it up?  I used to have MacKeeper on it, but the Genius Bar at the Apple store told me the uninstall it, as it often can cause a slow performance.

  • Suddenly my macbook pro got slow

Recently, my macbook pro got extremely slow and it's not charging it stays on 0%.
Plus, when i take out my charger laptop shuts off automatically.
    This happened all of sudden.

Take it into your nearest Apple Store for diagnosis/repair.

  • All of a sudden, my MacBook Pro is running very slow?!?

I have had my MacBook Pro for a about a year and a half and have had NO problems with it. A few weeks ago, my MacBook has become very slow, to the point where I have to restart the computer. Most of the time the dreaded beach ball appears and my MacBook just freezes. This occurs with the simpilest tasks such as opening Safari.
This is becoming very frustrating and I am losing my patience, I am hoping it is something that I can fix on my own to avoid going into Apple.
    PLEASE HELP!

Since someone suggested it, I ran Etre Check  Results below

  • Slow Macbook Pro with frequent spinning rainbow wheel!

My Macbook Pro suddenly is very slow especially when using Google Chrome. I usually get the spinning rainbow wheel for most tasks and on chrome it often says "waiting on cache" or "waiting on app cache". I don't think it's just chrome because I have had problems with other applications as well. I've tried repairing disk permissions multiple times as well as deleting browsing history and nothing has solved the problem so far. I had a similar problem earlier in the year when I had to go to a store to get theBRACKET,HDD,FRONT,WITHIR/SLEEP/HDCABLE fixed. Any tips or suggestions would help! Don't really want to have to go back to a store to get this fixed again. etrecheck is below

  • Red CPU and Slow Macbook Pro

My macbook pro has been running super slow for the past 4 months . Whenever I go to the activity monitor I find the CPU screen full of red lines, I have many applications that I don't know know running and I try to quit or force quit them but it doesn't work with all of them (I choose the ones under my username).
Then the CPU screen suddenly gets black and my computer gets fast again for a while (like an hour or less) then gets slow again. Is my macbook infected with a trojan or what could be really going on ?

Open Activity Monitor in the Utilities folder.  Select All Processes from the Processes dropdown menu.  Click twice on the CPU% column header to display in descending order.  If you find a process using a large amount of CPU time, then select the process and click on the Quit icon in the toolbar.  Click on the Force Quit button to kill the process.  See if that helps.  Be sure to note the name of the runaway process so you can track down the cause of the problem.
Monitor the activity so you might note what is hogging CPU time when the computer becomes sluggish.
