Suddenly strange symptoms

Mail (on a POP account) has lost its mind. When I highlight an inbox email and click reply, the frame around the window changes its shade of grey, but a reply window never comes up.
When I quit mail, each click of the reply button results in the draft count increasing in the left panel.
I relaunch and go to the list of drafts, and I have one unstarted draft for each click.
I delete those drafts, but they come back as I'm quitting the program...ie, the count returns to what it was before, and I see the list of multiple drafts in the list.
Just to make it even more difficult, I can't launch preferences. When I choose it, no window pops up.
I have tried deleting the envelope index, trashing the plist file, and running Disk First Aid. Will probably try DiskWarrior next unless there's a more specific fix for this.
Any suggestions? Thanks.

HI,
DiskWarrior isn't for repairing problems with the Mail application.
In Mac Mail, from the Menu Bar, click Mailbox/Rebuild and see if that helps.
Try pressing Command , (comma) to open Mail/Preferences.
If nothing helps, reinstall the Mail application from your install disk.
Insert the install disk. Open the Optional Installs folder, then open Optional Installs.mpkg
An Installer will start... click Continue. When you get to the Installation Type in the window on the right you will see: Applications. Click the Disclosure triangle so it faces down. Selec the Mail app and click Continue.
Then repair disk permissions...
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.
I'm trouble shooting for Leopard since you posted in the Leopard forum. Could you please click My Settings on the right side of this window and tell us which Mac you have and which Mac OS X verion 10.5.x ?? you are running... thanks!

  • Sudden Strange Decrease in Sync Speed

On the afternoon of Thursday 4/3/2010 I had a strange change in my sync speed.
For about the past year I have enjoyed a solid 3.1 meg sync and same IP Profile. Sometimes its goes up to 3.5, but never below 3 meg. I know my neighbours get around 2 meg, but working in IT I invested the time in getting decent kit and improving the connection, despite the line length being approx 4km.
However, on thursday afternoon I noticed the PPP link was down, but the sync was still at 3.1 meg.
So I rebooted the router (D-Link DSL-2740B)and it came back as 1.6 meg sync and 1 meg IP Profile! (Attenuation and SNR stayed the same at 63.5 and 6.5 respectively)
Obviously I did the usual checks and unplugged everything, with the modem directly in the master socket, changed the cables, changed the filters, tried a second modem, checked line for audible noise, etc and over 24 hours got the sync back up to 1.8 meg with a 1.5 meg IP Profile, but I cannot seem to get it any faster!
Now I know a direct neighbour (downstream) has had lots of problems with his line recently and keeping synced, but it seems odd that suddenly my connection quality has dropped by 50%.
Could someone have done something at the Exchange (Braintree) that could have affected me so badly?
    Any help appreciated.
    Adam

see if leaving everything alone improves the problem, its possible that someone was in the exchange and caused the problem, more likley is that someone was using a none compliantdevice in the area and caused the problem, have any of the locals recently received/used something like a shiney remote control vehicle or helicopter?
if the problem persists then request help via the forum mods, or ring india for it

  • Multiple & Strange Symptoms

Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 on iMac.
    Symptoms:
    1. Both itunes media downloads and general software updates are being reversed - happens only sometimes. Example: Daily Show almost completely finished downloading, but I come back to the computer later and not only is it not downloaded, but iTunes store says 'Download' as if I had never pressed it in the first place.
    2. Partial Safari history suddenly disappears at the same time as #1, ie websites I know I visited are no longer listed in history.
    3. Finder is opening on its own.
I do not have Time Machine set up so my original hypothesis that the computer is somehow resetting itself to a previous time seems false.
    Any clue?
I'm concerned that my computer has a bug of some kind.

You need a backup, either Time Machine or a clone. I'll ask the hosts to relocate your post to the iiTunes for Mac community.

  • Sudden strangeness with mouse and keyboard

I know this is a commonly talked about topic but I feel my case may be a bit different. I have the same jittery mouse problem as well as the display not turning on like everybody. Strangely though, I've had no problems at all since I went to 10.5.2. I think I went two weeks without restarting. All of a sudden though, it went haywire. I've had to restart three times today, after a clean streak of two weeks. If it keeps up I'm going to go crazy. Anybody know any newer fixes or details on this?
For the record I tried the whole turning the AirPort off trick and the mouse jumping was even worse than normal, so it's not that.

Having issues as well with the pointer. It jumps, stutters, jitters. Whatever you want to call it. I have tried a wired Mighty Mouse and just bought a wireless Mighty Mouse this weekend. Still having issues. I have even tried to use just the trackpad with no mouse, same problem. Tried repairing disk permissions with disk utility. The only thing that seems to work is a restart...for a while. I was having wake-from-sleep issues before 10.5.2, then everything seemed to work fine for a few weeks. Now the jitters.
    Any ideas?

  • Sudden strange message

I'm running Photoshop CS3 on a 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Imac with 4GB of memory.
I am suddenly getting this message every time I try to save a change to an image: "Could not save (image name) because the file is already in use or was left open."
I have tried restarting, but that doesn't help.
I have tried quitting the program the image is being used in (Quark and InDesign), which doesn't help either.
    Any ideas?

Well that works. It seems it was Xpress that was doing it. It's a bit of a drag for the work flow though - you don't want to have to keep quitting a program to tweak an image. I wonder if there's something that can be done in Quark...

  • Sudden strange LR3 behavior

    Greetings -
I've suddenly started having odd things happening when importing in LR 3.4.1. This started after updating to OS 10.6.7, and had been getting wierder after updating to 10.6.8. Ran the usual permission repairs before and after each update(combo). Same with each LR update. I also use Cocktail for periodic maitenance.
A few weeks ago I noticed that the names of files were from a previous import while doing some printing. The image was correct, but the name was wrong. After performing a recent import, I noticed that the backup import hadn't takem place(or went to somewhere other than wanted). I also noticed that instead of a single folder with the name, there were two unamed folders, broken down by day. If I checked "Into Subfolder", then the named folder would appear, but with the two subfolders still there. There are no subfolders in the original folder. I checked the previous three imports, and they too had subfolders according to date(different folder for each days images). All other previous imports are still as originally imported.
I use the Seth Resnick method, including keeping all image files on a seperate drive, with a corresponding backup drive, in a Macpro 3.0 Quad with 4 drives installed. I also download from cards to the desktop and import from there, rather than import strait from the card.
I went back to my Library drive, and in the next to last imported folder, there were images with file names from the import before that. There were also image files with the correct name for that folder, but the images were from a folder that I hadn't even imported yet. However, I had checked them out in Bridge(CS4).
Hopefully someone here can make some sense of this, and figure out what's going on. The more I try, the more confused I get. And as it's recommended to do everything through LR, what would be the best way to get everything back in order?
    Thanks

    Hi Geoff -
Sorry for the delay, and thanks for responding.
I'll attach a sceenshot showing the worst of it. The files labeled caplescreek that are in the jamestown_rail folder were placed there by LR, not by me(at least as far as I know). I always import the folders as-is. The jamestown images were imported after the caplescreek folder, with a week inbetween. When viewing the jamestown files in the Develop module, the files labeled caplescreek do not show up at the front, despite being listed in the same folder as the ones that do. When going through the files in the jamestown folder in the Develop module, files no. 0017 and 0019 show up fine, but what should be 0018 is labeled caplescreek(this is the caplescreek_001 file on the library drive). This is a two star filtered file, and this has happened to all two star files, and only two star files. All the files labeled caplescreek in the jamestown folder are two star rated jamestoen images.
Durring a recent import I noticed that in the 'To' column, the folder I was going to import was placed in the previous import's folder, when 'into subfolder' is checked. If I uncheck that, the new import moves to the top of the master folder for that year. This folder is a genaric folder with the date. If I input the folder name for the subfolder, LR generates the subfolder with the file folder under that. Seems that is OK, but wondering why LR doesn't just import the folder name and all. One more thing to double check.
    Thanks again.
    Cheers

  • Suddenly strange new folder in Mailserver

    Hello everybody,
I'm having a problem with my mailserver.
Until a couple of days, the structure of my mailserver-folder looked like this:
    MAILSERVER/imap/stage.
    MAILSERVER/imap/sync.
    MAILSERVER/imap/user
Then suddenly, a new folder appeared:
    MAILSERVER/imap/^_-john^doe
    with those 3 files:
    MAILSERVER/imap/^_-john^doe/cyrus.cache
    MAILSERVER/imap/^_-john^doe/cyrus.header
    MAILSERVER/imap/^_-john^doe/cyrus.index
I checked the dated and it seems like the folder was created at 3:23 am on a friday night, when I wasn't arround. Apart from me, nobody has access to the server (at least I hope not
Does anybody have a clue how that could have happened? Can I just delete this folder?

This is due to an error in /etc/postfix/main.cf
    Make sure that
    localrecipientmaps =
is not empty. If it is empty, either remove it altogether (this will set it to default values) or change it to:
    localrecipientmaps = proxy:unix:passwd.byname $alias_maps
This will make sure the problem does not repeat.
To get rid of the existing folders, use SirAdmin. Do not simply delete them as it will break your IMAP database.
    HTH,
    Alex

  • Strange symptoms.

I was using our computer when all of a sudden I heard speech witch isn't that abnormal but it was talking about everything like, "Open menu, Close menu,"
even saying the keys I was typing! Plus little Black boxes around every thing I clicked I ignored it at first then it got really annoying. If anyone has any suggestions it would be appreciated.

It's probably VoiceOver ("Seeing" pane "Universal Access" system preference).
Command-F5 will turn it on or off.

  • Strange symptoms on OSC-CSM

    Hi!
I notice something strange with OSC-CSM card on ONS 15454 MSTP. It showed as red in CTC with APS state is disable. Alarm indicate equipemtn failure. But when I view at card level all ports are green and optical power is good. However on the network and circuit (OCHNC) view one of the line is grey while the other is green and the state is partial. Traffic from the client however is passing through. This is strange. The manual says that I can soft reset the card from CTC or reseat/replace it but I dont want to do this now as this will interrupt operation. What's the best course to take? Apreciate your expert advice. Thanks.

When you went back to Snow Leopard, did you erase the ENTIRE drive with the 10.6 disk first?
Lion alters the partition map of the boot drive, if you didn't erase and format the entire drive with the 10.6 version of the GUID parititon map, Snow Leopard might be having a problem with the 10.7 version of the GUID.
Clone the 10.6 OS X partiton off to a external drive with Carbon Copy Cloner,  check that your files are there.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk and erase the entire drive (select the makers name and size on the far left) use the Zero Erase option, that will map off any bad sectors you might be having. Install 10.6 fresh, same log in name, Software Updater till clear.
Reinstall your 10.6 programs from fresh sources and finally hook up the clone and transfer just the users file folders (music, pictures etc., not Library) into the same ones on the internal.
This is know as a "Fresh Install" combined with the Zero Erase of the internal boot drive, should map off bad sectors and cure all your problems.
    https://discussions.apple.com/community/notebooks/macbook_pro?view=documents
People don't know that Lion alters the GUID and creates a hidden Lion Recovery partition at the bottom of the drive, thus can cause issues as Snow Leopard doesn't know what the heck is going on.

  • Suddenly strange French characters appearing instead of what the keyboard shows

I have a brand new HP Touchless 520-1050 with a wireless keyboard.  I have the language set to Canadian English (and I double checked that by checking via the control panel).  There is a button on the keyboard (2nd from the left bottom row) that says Fn which I assume has something to do with French.  I have touched some combination of keys on the keyboard and now I am getting characters that differ from what appears on the keyboard.  For example, instead of getting a question mark when I hit that key, I get this: É. or this é depending whether or not I hit the shift key.  How to I undo what I have unwittingly doneÉ
    This question was solved.

    Hello MarmMM:
Welcome to HP's forum. Canadian language uses both English and French. Goto your Control Panel and on top right you will see View BY. Change it to veiw Large Icons. Now look for Region and Language click on it. It should open Formats screen. Now click on Keyboard and Languages (Tab on top) You will see Choose a display language . It is the bottom one if it is written in French. Select your language you like to use. If you whant to check your keyboard lay out. Click on top one Change Keyboard and switch it back to the right language settings if changes were made there also. Please click on Kudos if this has resolved your issue. Thank you frrw.

  • Strange symptom since uninstall of Norton Antivirus 11.0

    Hello
Since the uninstall of Norton my Macbook doesn't boot anymore (circle with a line through it)
Safeboot is working well and after the safeboot - if I do a restart - the restart works normal (macbook is in normal operation). If I do restart from "normal-mode" the macbook hangs again with the circle with a line through it sign and I have to do a safeboot again.
    sorry for my bad english
    thomas

In another document on the support homepage it is told that version 11.0 shoul be uninstalled with the integrated uninstaller - this is what i did

  • IPod seems to be dead, strange symptoms

Saturday I'm driving around and I hit the play button on my iPod (an older one, probably 5 years old, 20 gig Classic-style). No music. I look down, and it's flipping through the songs: the song title/band/etc will be on the screen for 1-2 seconds, then off to another in a random order.
I do a reset, I do every reset I can, I do the "flip into disk mode" reset. In iTunes I tell it to reset to default. Now it won't power on, it's showing the icon to plug the AC adapter into the wall. Sadly, I don't have an AC adapter, so I can't do that. I seem to recall there were specific instructions to get past that icon, but I can't find them. I briefly got it into menus and all the music seemed to be gone, which is OK, I can load it easily enough.
So now I've got a spiffy-looking paperweight (my wife bought me the Flying Spaghetti Monster skin for Xmas!). Any suggestions? I'm going to go by Best Buy over lunch and buy an AC adapter, I'm also going to try plugging it into a speaker cradle.

Yeah, you'd think a car charger would work too...
have an URL for a program that would read/write the play lists on my iPod
Are you trying to put playlists on the iPod? That's a function of iTunes, if you use sync instead of manual loading of songs.
If you are trying to take playlists off the iPod onto the computer, I have used a program that can do so
    http://www.zeleksoftware.com/liberator.htm
but it is not free ($25).

  • Call Manager 7.1. Strange symptoms

I  have been getting reports of...   " when I put someone on hold It hangs up on them. "  When I transfer calls it hangs up on them."  " Calls are going straight to voice mall".   I can not re-create any of these claims but we are reciveing more and more reports of this.
I have NO clue on where to begin to trouble shoot this issue.  I need any help that you can give.

The network directory needs to be an SFTP site that the system can access with the proper settings (directory, username, password) or the configuration will not be saved.
