Suddenly, TC won't unmount

Time Machine has been working flawlessly since I got my TC, but now all of a sudden, the drive will not unmount after finishing a backup like it always has. Any reason why?

As they age they become less reliable..
What kind of modem and broadband are you using??
If it is gen 3 I suspect your TC is suffering from onset of board capacitor issues..
Please give me the A1xxx model number from the rubber mat on the bottom.
Do the setup that you know is correct.
Leave the TC off overnight to completely cool down.. start it up again the next day.. see if it will work.
If you get it working but it fails after a few minutes.. you are suffering A1355 early board failure.
If it doesnt work at all, try to use just wireless.
Set the wan ethernet speed down to 10mbit.
You will not be able to do that using the v6 airport toyland utility.. you need to use 5.6 which can be tricked into working on Mountain Lion.
Simply download the utility.. and unpkg..
http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1482
http://www.timdoug.com/unpkg/
Run unpkg.. click the dmg airport utility and drag the pkg file over unpkg.. it will load it to a new directory on the desktop.. drill down to applications, utilities.. drag it to your utilites directory.. or just run it. Do not run both utilities.. stick to the tool and leave the toys behind.

  • External hard drive won't unmount for disk utility.

Im not sure if this is the right topic area but I have a white macbook and my external hard drive won't unmount. I want to erase it via disk utility but it keeps telling me other programs are using it.

    Drive Preparation
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.

  • Private Photos App - pictures not displaying This app was working fine, then suddenly it won`t display any of the photos.

This app was working fine, then suddenly it won't display any of the photos. One day the photos were there, gone the next. It still shows how many photos are there but just shows a white screen. I can't export anything to the photo album. Adding photos to existing folders yields the same result, only white screen displayed. However, I can create new albums and add photos to those without issue. Does anybody know how to recover the "missing" photo"  I was going to try reinstalling the app but it's no longer available in the iTunes App Store. Thanks, Tracy

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • Lacie won't unmount

    Greetings Gurus,
I took part of my system home to do some work over the holidays and am now having trouble unmounting my Lacie BigDiskExtremeTriple. This drive has always been connected to my Dual G5 desktop (profile listed below), but I'd hoped to get some work done on the MBPro 17.
Here's what info I have so far:
I believe the problem started from having several external FW drives looped through a Belkin FW hub (sorry, no specs on it right now other than 3 FW 6pin ports on each side of the hub) - computer froze and I had to reboot.
I believe this caused some possible directory damage to the Lacie since I had been unable to 'unmount' the drive properly.
Support and Google searches have offered several things to try, but none have resolved the issue yet. Most suggest a 'directory issue with the drive' that Disk Warrior may fix. I have DW3.0, but also read that it's not going to work if the drive won't unmount in Disk Utility (which it wont')
Here is what I've tried so far.
any usage of Finder/Spotlight locks up the system.
Drive seems to work, though I've delayed pushing it with apps (mostly FCStudio), until I can resolve the issue.
Force Quit Finder - have been able to then unmount the drive once or twice, but usually not.
Restart Mac - can usually then unmount the drive, but not always
Check Activity monitor - this shows a Process ID/Name 'mds' at Root level running 99% (any ideas there?)
Run Terminal commmand 'sudo lsof | grep "The-Volume-Name"
    - This gives me 4 items (one at Finder and 3 at mds) - Here is what it listed...
    Finder 98 kevandholdsworth 19r VDIR 14,11 68 10944 /Volumes/MEDIA/.Trashes/501
    mds 186 root 22u VREG 14,11 1069056 4392 /Volumes/MEDIA/.Spotlight-V100/store.db
    mds 186 root 23u VREG 14,11 1069056 4393 /Volumes/MEDIA/.Spotlight-V100/.store.db
    mds 186 root 24u VREG 14,11 0 4395 /Volumes/MEDIA/.Spotlight-V100/.journalHistoryLog
Is it possible to just locate these files and delete them? or will DW need to do it's own thing?
I'm ready to try Disk Warrior, but would appreciate any feedback regarding the issue before I attempt it.
(sadly, I broke the cardinal rule of not double posting [initially in the 'Finder, Dock & Dashboard Forum], but feel much more confident of getting strong advice here...my apolgies to any I've upset by doing so)
    Thanks,
    Kevan
PS - just checked my profile and it does not yet list the MBP...It's a 17" w/2GB Ram, same OS and Software as on the G5

It's not backed up yet...I'll do that before running DiskWarrior
I'm not convinced what the issue is. I now am unable to unmount any external HDs (all FW) from my G5.
Jim, Disk Utility is not giving me the option to 'disable journaling'.
Spotlight prefs won't let me add(+) either volume to 'privacy'...that's my understanding on how to remove it from being indexed. However, when I tried 'dragging' one of the volumes into the 'privacy' area, it went 'Poof'...now showing up on desktop, but no longer in finder...is this what you are referring to?
Kenneth, I'm the only user/admin...not seeing an issue there. Maybe I'm missing something from your suggestion. I simply boot up as I always do.
    UPDATE...
FYI, here is the original prompt I get when trying to unmount any external hard drives: "The disk "DISK NAME" is in use and could not be ejected. Try quitting applications and try again"
There are no visible applications open...I notice now after dragging a volume to spotlight privacy that one of the text lines from the Terminal sudo command no longer shows up.
I have been able to unmount all drives after starting up from a backup drive (Panther). However, restarting from Tiger does not allow this. I'm also a bit concerned about doing restarts without properly unmounting any of these drives.
Here are a couple of links I've been trying to apply, but it's looking like a backup and DiskWarrior are next steps. A show deadline is preventing me from doing so at this time.

  • After using Firefox for years, suddenly it won't click on. How can I get it to work ?

Suddenly Firefox won't click open. I tried to uninstall it(Windows 7, 64-bit and try to download the newest version from the Mozilla website, but each time it starts to uninstall and/or install the message appears: you must close all versions of Firefox. All versions ARE closed, but it makes no difference; the operation just stops.
I have no trouble with my Google Chrome and IE browsers, just with Firefox.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox and any leftover program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps one by one:
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu) and confirm all upcoming messages.
#Now, uninstall Firefox by following the steps mentioned in the [[Uninstall Firefox from your computer#w_uninstall-firefox|Uninstall Firefox]] article.
'''IMPORTANT:''' On Windows, the uninstaller has the option to remove your personal data and settings. Make sure that you do '''not''' check this option; otherwise all of your bookmarks, passwords, extensions, user customizations and other Firefox [[Profiles|user profile data]] will be removed from your computer.
After uninstalling Firefox on Windows, delete the "Mozilla Firefox" program folder, located by default in one of these locations:
    * '''(On 32-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox''
    * '''(On 64-bit Windows)''' ''C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox''
#Go to the Windows Start menu and click on "Computer".
#In the Explorer window that opens, double click Local Disk (C:) to open the C:\ drive.
#Find the "Program Files (x86)" folder or "Program Files" folder.
#* On 32-bit Windows, double-click the '''Program Files''' folder to open it.
#* On 64-bit Windows, you will see a "Program Files (x86)" folder AND a "Program Files" folder. Open the '''Program Files (x86)''' folder.
#Look for a '''Mozilla Firefox''' folder. If you find one, right-click it and select ''Delete'' and confirm that you want to move the folder to the Recycle Bin.
Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
#Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
#Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • RAID won't unmount...can't repair

Problem: after fixed failed RAID (lost in poweroutage), RAID'd drive won't mount. If I drop to single user mode and fsck the boot volume (no errors listed), after reboot it's the RAID volume is back. I loose it after a restart without fsck (boot volume loads but RAID is "unrecognizeable").
When it mounts everything functions as it should (users get home folders and have read/wrote access, etc.). However if I try to repair it in disk utility (per Apple phone support), i get an error message saying that the disk can't unmount so therefore can't check it.
Any suggestions (besides clean install) that you have to keep the RAID volume intact? I refuse to believe that it's toast as i am able to have it function. I guess I wouldn't be opposed to a wipe if I could get a good backup of it, but I can't even do that since it won't unmount.
Can't wait to hear what you come up with!
    Thanks in advance.

Really, how toasted can it be when it all works flawlessly
until reboot? THis really bothers me....
Don't get me started about the Apple Hardware RAID card. I hope you have the write caches turned off for all LUNs because they don't always fully flush on graceful power down (the drives are disconnected from the bus before caches are flushed) - I've had a RADAR bug report turned in for almost 2 years on that, it was very hard to track down and create a reproducible test case. LSI Logic fixed the bug in their microcode after Apple split its version from the LSI Logic code tree to modify for use in the Xserve; don't expect this bug to ever be fixed because the product is EOL, only known workaround is to turn off the write caches.
That said, the disks are big. You think it's working flawlessly, but it may not be. Mystery garbage blocks from space, especially on a RAID, can be hard to track down. For example, on a RAID 1, the read data might not always come from the same disk of the mirror.
If you really think that the mirror is good, I'd suggest cloning it off while booted from another disk (perhaps split the mirror, clone - not image - to one of the split disks, then recreate the mirror from the good copy).
Yea, your DiskWarrior issue is because the disk can't be unmounted.

  • IMac shut down suddenly and won't boot back up

This morning my iMac shut down suddenly.  All I had open was Google Chrome and I was just on Facebook and that's it.  When I tried to boot it back up, it wouldn't load past the startup sound, wherein it would appear to shut back down,or at the very least the screen would go black (my mouse has lights that stay on when the computer is on, and the light kept going on and off while the screen remained black).  This was the case for at least a half hour until it suddenly booted itself back up all on its own.  I had it on throughout the day, just browsing the internet and watching Youtube. It shut itself down twice during the day, and both times it restarted on its own right away after showing me a grey screen with the Apple logo and a progress bar.  Now it just shut itself down again and it won't make it past the progress bar screen - if it even makes it that far, sometimes it shuts off right after it makes the startup sound.  It keeps trying to boot up on its own over and over again, but it keeps shutting down right away.  All the fixes I've searched for so far require a computer that actually boots up all the way so I don't think I could run any reports if I tried!
I'm running the latest version of Yosemite (10.10.2?).
    Model number A1311
Not entirely sure what specs are useful to know so I'm just gonna write some of what's on the box it came in:
    3.2 GHz Intel i3 processor, 4MBshared level 3 cache
    4GB of 1333MHz DDR SDRAM
    1TB serial ATA hard drive
ATI Radeon HD 5670 graphics processor with 512 MB of GDDR3 memory
Bought it around fall of 2010.  Not sure if it's worth trying to get it fixed (I live nowhere near an Apple store) or if I should just get a new computer, but I would like to know what's wrong, if possible.

Try to boot into the Recover Partition by holding down the Command + R keys on startup. If it still won't boot then the HD has probably crashed. The is likely a AASP in your area, you can locate one by clicking AASP Locator, take it to one to be professional diagnosed. If it's only the HD, assuming you have been backing up, restoring to a new HD is pretty simple.

  • Disk images won't unmount/eject for admin user, DVDs & iDisk also affected

This problem started when I was on Tiger, and seemed to follow me onto Leopard.
It only affects me, the primary user on my Mac. *One other user on the computer; she also has admin level access and does not have any of these problems.*
    Here's the deal:
*Once mounted, disk images won't eject/unmount.*
    - Dragging to the trash can doesn't work. The eject icon appears, but nothing happens.
    - Ctrl-click does not show Eject as an option when highlighting the mounted image.
    - CMD-E doesn't work
    - EJect doesn't appear as an option in the finder menu
    - Clicking on the Eject button in the sidebar of the Finder window doesn't work.
    - I've logged out, rebooted, repaired permission, and installed a new OS (clean install of 10.5, then did the import of my old user settings. Since I had the problem in Tiger, it's clear the problem followed me, but what the heck causes it?)
*The only way to unmount/eject a disk image is to use the Disk Utility Program.*
*DVDs also can only be ejected via Disk Utility*
The iDisk connection can only be killed by opening Activity Monitor and killing the webdavfs_agent process.
Would love some help. I've searched a lot and have a fair amount of folks with this problem, but no real solution.

That'll work; however, then the OP has to reset all of his preferences. Easier would be to log into the newly created admin account, backup the bad account's folder, delete the bad account, selecting the save data option (which is stored in /Users/Deleted Users/ as a disk image), recreate the bad account using the same username/password combo, log out and back into the recreated original account. Mount the saved data dmg file in /Users/Deleted Users/, open the /Library/Preferences/ folder from the saved data, open the current /Users/restored account/Library/Preferences/ folder, and slowly copy plist files from the saved data folder to the current one. Log out and back in to ensure there's no conflict and things still work correctly. Resolving these kinds of conflicts is a laborious process, but not as laborious as resetting preferences or even remembering what you set weeks, months, or years ago.

  • Mail suddenly just won't open

All of a sudden the Mail program just won't open.
I click on the logo in the dock, the icon briefly flashes, then nothing.
I've tried double clicking the program through the Finder but still no response.
I've tried to find a way to re-install the Mail program without having to re-install a whole bunch of other programs but so far can't find away to do it.
Any ideas what the best option would be?
And... which came first: The chicken or the egg?
    Peace to all!

Mail dumps a whole lot of files in several places in your user library folder which it needs to run. If these get corrupted then Mail might get confused and simply not open, which is what i'm guessing and hoping your problem is. Before you go messing around with such files, run a permissions check from disk uility and if you really want repair the disk. Please read the whole post then act accordingly.
The first file you want to look at is from your home folder (the house with your user account written under it) library>caches and the folder mail. just move it to your desktop and see if mail launches.
If no go up to the library again and open preferences folder and move the mail preference file (com.apple.mail.plist) to your desktop and again see if mail launches.
If this doesn't work then move the mail folder inside the library folder to your desktop and again see if mail works. This should in effect wipe mail and give it a clean slate, it will prompt you like the first time you ever set up mail for user account details, etc.
If this doesn't work, please tell me anything else you can that might help. If you have valuable data (attachments, certain content in e-mails) then i can try and help you retrieve them from the files you moved to your desktop, so don't delete them until you are 120% sure you don't need them.
    hope that helps

  • All of a sudden Photoshop won't start [on a Macbook Air]

    Dear all,
I'm on a MacBook Air with OS X 10.10.2, and I use Photoshop about once a month, but now I really need it, and it won't start:
    - Immediately after I click on the Photoshop icon I get "Adobe Photoshop CS5.1 cannot be opened because of a problem." And when I click on the "Report..." button I get a very technical message (see below).
    - I've used Photoshop on this machine for about a year with no problem, but recently I had a problem and needed to restore from my TimeMachine backup.
    - I don't know if the problem occurred immediately after the restore or not.
    - I've read innumerable threads on various forums, but nothing describes my problem exactly. I suspect a problem with my paths and permissions (since I read a report that restoring from a TimeMachine causes such problems occasionally), but I don't know which path is corrupted/missing/unreadable.
    - I've tried creating a new admin account and starting Photoshop from there. It didn't work.
    - I don't mind reinstalling, but I don't have an installer image. I started with Photoshop 6, then updated to CS2, CS4 and eventually CS5. I do have all the serial numbers but not all update-images.
I would appreciate any hints on how to further diagnose and some the problem.
    Thanks a lot in advance!

    Restore preference files to default
In this video, learn the two methods of resetting your preference files back to default: Manual preference file removal and Keyboard Shortcut method (starts at 5:05)
    by Julieanne Kost
To restore preferences quickly using a keyboard short cut:
Press and hold Alt+Control+Shift (Windows) or Option+Command+Shift (Mac OS) as you start Photoshop. You are prompted to delete the current settings. The new preferences files are created the next time you start Photoshop.
Note: Using the keyboard shortcut, preference files for custom shortcuts, workspaces, and color setings will also be reset to default.

  • My iPod was working just fine but all of a sudden it won't connect to iTunes?

I've done everything I can think of! I system restored my computer, I reinstalled iTunes and even repaired it like two times, I've even installed an older version of iTunes. In the older version of iTunes it at least registers that I've connected my iPod to it... except it says "songs cannot be added to the iPod "%1$S" because all of its space has been reserved for data." And something about a FireWire and "You must connect using FireWire to restore the iPod ~^FILENAME"."
I've even ran multiple diagnostics scans through iTunes on the connectivity issue and this is what I've gotten each time:

Can anyone help me out? I'm so frustrated with my iPod.
To make it even better, my iPad won't even connect either.
However my friend has the same computer and it will connect to hers just fine. (The iPad will at least)
    Thank you in advance for any and all help you can give me. ;~;
