Suddenly unable to open mail, why?

Having used mail for some time, suddenly no more access to mail, simply no picture on screen, allthough it appears to be open somewhere, but what have I done to hide it? And how do I get it back?
JMA

When you single click via a mouse on an email here: https://mail.verizon.com/webmail/driver?nimlet=showmessages&view=emails do you get any error? Also if you use keyboard only - up/down arror to select any email and press enter will email open?
IF none of this helps, please let us know what version of Windows or Mac OS you are on as well as the browser.

  • Please Help! Suddenly unable to open Mail, Address Book etc

This morning when I woke up my IBook my Mail was still open from yesterday. When I tried to open ICal it kept crashing. So I restarted and then suddenly ITunes, Mail, Address Book and ICal would not open at all!! (However, it seems that iPhoto, Appleworks, Safari etc is fine).
I do have a IPhone, but haven't synced in a week or so. Not sure that that would be relevant at all.
The other weird thing that has happened, is that all the info on the top right hand corner of my menu bar (my airport, date, weather snitch, spotlight etc) disappeared a few weeks ago. It has been blank there ever since. When I just did a check of those applications ( internet connect, weather snitch) they also didn't open now.
Thanks in advance for any advice at all...
BTW, I just ran verify disk, and it stopped with this error message:
" the underlying task reported failure on exit" - The volume needs to be repaired.
Really hoping that someone can help me with this!

Hi ALSVLA, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Tiger Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
The usual reason why updates fail or mess things up, is if Permissions are not fixed before & after every update, with a reboot... you may get a partial update when the installer finds it doesn't have Permissions to change one obscure little part of the OS, leaving you with a mix of OS versions.
Some people get away without Repairing Permissions for years, some for only days.
If Permissions are wrong before applying an update, you could get mixed OS versions, if Directory is the slightest messed up, who knows!

  • I am suddenly unable to open elements 9 in windows 7.

why is this happening and what do I do?

    Thanks -
That's how I've been doing it since installment.  After I wrote  earlier, I
discovered that patience is its own reward in that PE suddenly had  opened.
Probably 5 minutes.  If it persists, may take it out and  reload.

  • I am unable to open Mail since last Yosemite update

I have been unable to open Mail since the last OS X Yosemite update on my iMac
I have tried double clicking on mail in Applications as suggested in Mail Help but to no avail.

Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.
    Alternatively, see:
Reinstall OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Choose the version you have installed now:
OS X Yosemite- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mavericks- Reinstall OS X
OS X Mountain Lion- Reinstall OS X
OS X Lion- Reinstall Mac OS X
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet

  • I have downloaded Adobe Muse to CC, but are unable to open. Why?

I have downloaded Adobe Muse to CC, but are unable to open. Why?

Yes it does, but the only clickable link is tutorial within the CC. I can enter via applications on my computer, but it wants to update and then says I haven't purchased the Adobe Muse program. If I ignore to update I can however open the program. But the program should be opened via CC, am I correct?

  • Unable to open mail

I am unable to open mail.  Up until yesterday, I had no problem whatsoever.  Now when I click on the mail icon on my desktop nothing happens. Is there a way to enable my mail?

    This may work or not:
First, if you're running Lion you need to open Terminal and copy/paste then hit return.
    chflags nohidden ~/Library
This will allow you to see your home folder Library.
Next you have to find this file
    com.apple.mail.plist
in your home folder Library called Preferences and move it to the Trash. Don't empty the Trash yet. If this doesn't help, you can always move it back. I don't run Lion, but there should be a File>Put Back option when it's in the Trash.
But, important, before you do that, you need to make a backup copy of your Mail folder. For directions, see my post in this recent thread. It begins, "just in case."

Do all of the preceding with Mail quit. Next open Mail and you will be asked to set up a new Mail. So, you must remember or write down all your settings in any of your accounts, both for incoming and outgoing.

  • Unable to open mail program as of this morning...Nov 23, 2013

As of this morning, Nov 23, 2013 unable to open Mail program with Maverick. Yesterday lost both Western Digital drives...any chance of recovering data?

Please update Firefox to 3.6.17 a.s.a.p. the reason being that there was a security breach at Comodo which is an SSL certificate provider recently whereby a number of fraudulent certificates were inadvertently issued. These allow a hacker to impersonate any site including online banking and the Firefox version you're running at the moment will not warn you that the site is a fake. The fraudulent certificates were blacklisted in v3.6.17 and beyond.

  • Unable to open Mail.  Home directory is full.

Suddenly I can no longer open my Mail program. The error message I am confronted with is:
"Mail cannot update your mailboxes because your home directory is full.
You must free up space in your home folder before using Mail. Delete unneded documents or move documents to another volume."
I have gone in to my home folder and deleted a ton of stuff. But I am still unable to open my Mail application.
Any assistance would be much appreciated.

What is your hard drive capacity and available free space after deleting a ton of stuff?
    Try the following.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail > Envelope Index.
Move the Envelope Index file to the Desktop.
When re-launching Mail, you will be prompted to import all mailboxes located within the Mail folder at Home > Library > Mail. Select OK and allow the import process to complete.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully imported, you can delete the old Envelope Index file from the Desktop and this should resolve the problem.

  • Unable to Open Mail "index is read only

I am unable to open my mail and receive the following message. Mail can’t open because its index is read-only. The index file is located in /MacBook Pro HR/Users/tommygorse/Library/Mail/Envelope Index.  If this file is on your computer, use the Get Info window in the Finder to change your permissions for this file to “Read & Write.”  I have tied this and I still get the same message.  I also tried permission repair and received the following message: Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired. Please advise.  Thank you.

For whatever reason, I decided to trash the Envelope Index in the Mail Library.  I don"t know why I did this but it worked.   Thank goodness.

  • Receiver unable to open mail

What would prevent a receiver from opening mail? There are times when one person will email me that he was unable to open my email. It doesn't seem to matter whether or not I have attachments or photos attached. At other times he is able to open my email. He uses a PC but others to whom I email also have PCs and haven't had a problem opening my mail. Also, many times he forwards emails that have photos and attachments! Any ideas about what is happening and how it can be solved? Thanks.
