Suddenly unable to play or rip CDs.

Can anyone help? I was able to play audio CD's and rip CD's using iTunes, until today. iTunes detects the CD and will download the tract info from GraceNotes. When I try and play the songs, iTunes quickly scrolls through all the songs, but doesn't play them. I am able to play songs and podcasts from the library. I have no problems playing CD's using Windows Media Player. iTunes is set as my default audio CD player.
Thanks, WCTC

Good luck! :)

  • Hyper-V guest machine unable to play or rip CDs

    Hi,
I have a Windows 7 VM on which I would like to play and rip CDs. I defined the CD/DVD drive to point on the physical CD/DVD drive.
When I insert an audio CD, the VM detects the insertion but it is not able nor to play nor to rip files.
On VM I can correctly play MP3 and other media. Only physical audio CD cannot play.
Any suggestion on how to solve the problem?
    Thank you.

  • G580 not playing or ripping CDs

My G580 Intel Core i3-3110M Laptop has stopped playing or ripping CDs.
Ive tired Microsoft updates and that has not solved the problem,
Media player mostly does not recognise the CD,  few times it has recognised the play list but wont play or rip and an error message shows.
I tried many CDs and download another CD player. one player showed the CD contents but when I tried to rip the CD a pop up message states
         Cant retrieve DVD/CD model.

I have taken 2 screenshots of the same album, the first screen shot is from Lenavo Power player,
the power player takes a a few minutes to load and then a message of not responding after a while.it does show the names on this occasion in power player but took a few minutes to load and still not playing the CD.

  • Can't play or rip CDs with 5.0

Well, I was able to install iTunes 5.0 with no trouble. Lost a couple of songs I downloaded, but not a huge problem. My concern is that I cannot Rip CDs. Can't play them either. This is why I went back to 4.7 after attempting 4.8. I thought maybe 4.9 would have fixed the problem, but no...so I had to uninstall that, too. I keep trying, but keep failing to get the results I need.
Basically, iTunes will only play the first 1-3 seconds of each track on a CD. Same goes for ripping tracks. (Is this Apple's way of saying, "don't use Windows," Or perhaps, "buy music from iTunes store?") Although the first three seconds of the tracks are generally nice...I'd much prefer to hear the whole song. I'm sure you understand. Anyone have any suggestions?

  • Virtual PC suddenly unable to play sounds

    Hi everybody,
Just recently, when I try to start up virtual PC I get a message that says virtual PC was not able to start up the mac audio system, and is therefore unable to play sounds. Up until then, sounds had always played just fine in virtual PC, and I have no idea what could have caused the change, as I don't remember screwing with any sound/virtual pc settings, or installing any updates or anything right before this happened.
Does anybody have any ideas about how I might troubleshoot and/or fix this issue?
I'm running the most recent version of both OS X (10.4.8) and virtual PC (7.0.2).

Since VPC is not an Apple product, you'll get better response if you use a forum dedicated to Microsoft's Mac products such as <http://groups.google.com/groups/dir?sel=33607053> rather than an Apple forum that focuses on using Mac OS X.
Be sure to search the forum first in case someone has already had a similar question answered. You'll get your answer faster this way. Post your question in the forum if you don't find anything that helps you.

  • Rip CDs to a different location than the iTunes music folder?

I just got my first iPod about two weeks ago: a 32 GB Touch. It's awesome. I started ripping a ton of music to my PowerBook G4's 80 GB hard drive. Now it's running out of space. I was thinking of buying a USB external drive to store all the music I want, but I'm afraid the USB speed will cause trouble ripping CDs.
So, I was thinking I could rip the music to my desktop and then just copy it to the external drive. Is there any way to do this in iTunes? Rip here and play from there? Of course, I know I could just change the setting for the music folder in iTunes each time, but that seems a little more tedious than merely copying.

This all hinges on the precise sequence and nature of CD rips in iTunes. If you rip a whole CD, then my assumption is (I don't know 100% about all these steps) :
    1. the read is local, from the CD drive
    2. the conversion of a particular track is done in RAM
    3. once a track is processed (and while the next one is being read and converted) it is written out to your Library.
This means that even with slow USB, iTunes can still read and convert a track, while writing the previous track to disk. But I don't know what happens if iTunes finishes the second track while the first is still being written. I'm guessing that all converted tracks "back up" into a queue waiting to be written (hypothesis only - I have never been faced with this particular problem).

  • Unable to play more than 1 song at a time

I have been using iTunes on my desktop for years without much trouble. I usually place it on shuffle and let it go. Suddenly, today I am unable to play anything more than 1 song at a time. It no longer will go on to the next song either in shuffle or continuous play. Using the forward or backward button does not work, either. I have to select a song one at a time.
I don't know if this thing is really screwed up or if somebody in the house changed a setting that I just can't figure out.

Did you by any chance uncheck the the boxes beside any or all of the songs in the library? Unchecked songs won't play in a playlist or the library unless you select them individually: iTunes: Understanding the Symbols Next to Songs
Holding down the Control key and clicking the checkbox next to a song in the library or a playlist will toggle the marks for all the songs on or off: : iTunes 7 Keyboard Shortcuts for Windows

  • I'm suddenly unable to add downloaded music to my CL players, anyone have an idea w

I've had a Zen Micro?since last year with no problems, and last night I added my wife's Zen Nano plus to our home PC. The Media Organizer does recognize both players, but it only lets me transfer ripped CDs to them and not anything I've downloaded from the internet. Does anyone know how I can fix this? Thanks for any assistance.

Did you add any software for the Nano Plus or just use what you already had?Where are the downloaded songs from? If they are from a Subscription service then they won't play on the Nano Plus. I would re-install the Micro software, or load the latest versions from the website. PB

  • ITunes no longer registers or rips CDs

I've exhausted the information that is provided in the iTunes help area for figuring this out.
iTunes ran the CD/DVD drive diagnostics, where it said everything was fine, and in which it showed that it SEES the drive, but despite that it won't access any CDs IN the drive to play or rip from them.
So I tried the old standby: rebooting.
And after that, the FIRST CD that I entered into the drive resulted in iTunes changing from its default grey to a white skin, then back. So for the very first CD it registers that a CD exists, tho it never shows up in the player window. Then the drive is ignored for anything but diagnostic tests after that (i.e. the skin-color-change doesn't repeat with any newly-inserted CDs).
Here in the forum I found others asking the same thing. One suggestion was to see if the CD would rip in another program, so I tried. It rips just fine in Windows Media Player.
So it is definitely a problem with iTunes.
    Possibly relevant:
I recently had to reformat the iPod ('restore factory settings') since - after I changed computers from one with Win2K on it to Win7 the new install didn't recognize the info properly from the old files. (The iPod was showing the wrong (or no) album art for the tunes I've had for years. I figured it was keeping old reference points from the W2K iTunes install, even though the new one was using new reference codes... so: 'restore factory settings'.)
I know that I ripped a couple CDs in iTunes before that happened with the iPod, and they were OK (i.e. iTunes recognized the drive and ripped from it without effort). So I'm wondering if possibly the iTunes program got corrupted in the process of fixing the iPod? If so, how can I fix that?
Or are there other ideas if that is unlikely/impossible?
    Thank you!

As I stated in my last post, reinstalling the program made no change to its lack of functioning.
Is there anyone who will actually will read what I wrote, and actually try to help me fix this, who can help? Thank you!
    And if ed2345 reads this:
It is a shame people can't lose points for responses given here. ed2345, the response you gave clearly showed you did not read or pay attention to the relevant information given in my first post. The link you supplied only led to information I had already discussed and covered in that original post.
And then you said, "If those suggestions don't help, and you get tired of messing with it, put your WMP Rip setting on MP3, rip the CD, and add the resulting MP3s to your iTunes library." Trying to fix a program that previously worked, and clearly has BECOME dysfunctional, in favor of doing something every few days for the duration of this new computer's lifetime is supposed to be preferable to finding a one-time fix? That is not helpful. Nor is that reasonable to ask for someone to do that with a program that is supposed to be useful, and worked fine up until a week ago.
Adding more frustration to this problem by giving less than useless 'help' makes trying to figure this out even more aggravating.

  • Satellite C50-A-15L: unable to play music or video files via media player

    Hi all
I am having problems with my media player and explorer functions all of a sudden - it seems to have occured after a recent 'important update' (always causes more issues than fixes).
Anyway, since this update, I have been unable to play any music or video files via the media player or cut and paste any items when sorting files out.
All fine previously, but now when I highlight and click 'cut', the timer cuts in and the window goes straight to 'not responding'. Drag and drop works OK, then going back to delete files.
As for media files, double click one and no response, right click and 'open', again, nothing...
    Anyone else experienced similar problems?
Of know of a fix or patch?
    Many thanks
    Matt

From my point of few you have no problems with notebook but with Microsoft system.
    "Hotmail" isnt Toshiba product.
If you have problems login the Hotmail account, you should contact the Microsoft support for help.
By the way: you can always set the system back to early time point before you received any updates.
Windows 8 creates a restore point for you automatically during Windows Updates and other system maintenance events.
Open charm bar (Win key + c), choose Apps and search for Restore Point. Then click on Settings. On the left hand side you will see the option called Create a restore point.
New window would open. Within the System Protection tab choose System restore.
Clicking on Next would lead to next step where you could restore the computer to the sate it was before the selected event (windows update).

  • Unable to play movie in iphoto 08

Ever since installing Snow Leopard (the bane of my life!) I have been unable to play the movies that I have imported to iphoto 08 from my camera. No previous problems.

Start the install process with the Snow Leopard disc and look for a Customize button in one of the first windows, probably right after the language selection window. It will be similar to the Customize button in this screenshot:
Click on it and you will be able to select just what you want to install.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier versions) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. There are versions that are compatible with iPhoto 5, 6, 7 and 8 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
NOTE: The new rebuild option in iPhoto 09 (v. 8.0.2), Rebuild the iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup" makes this tip obsolete.

    Additional info:
Some of the clips that wont play in the preview or full screen window, shows a still picture when setting thetimeline to it AND THE clicking on the preview window. A still shows up, but nothing happens when a hit play. Some of the clips are from my GoPro Hero3 Black, but they seem to pay fine as long as I havn't used zoom on them. Any chance you could be part of a growing crowd of Premiere Elements 10 NVIDIA video card users who have run into the NVIDIA video card driver issue. For the now of this issue, the answer seems to be to roll back the driver version rather than assure that you have the latest version of it.

  • Can't rip CDs reliably in iTunes 10.5

I have been experiencing problems ripping CDs on my iMac. Many CDs appear OK, but some have just absolutely dreadful distortion. I have tried using different Macs, and even switching to Windows. Once I've identified a CD which won't rip, the terrible ripping performance is consistent across machines and operating systems. The one constant factor is iTunes 10.5.
I have successfully ripped one problem CD (Isserlis - see below) in earlier versions of iTunes, on both Mac OS X and Windows XP.
It makes no difference what output format is chosen - AAC, ALAC, AIFF etc. The effect is very different from CDs which have scratches, which may have some tracks which are difficult. This problem afflicts all the tracks on each affected CD
Also iTunes appears to rip the CDs correctly, identifiying the tracks etc. from the Gracenote database, and giving the correct track lengths. There is no way to tell whether a CD is likely to have this problem or not in advance, though mostly CDs from EMI, Universal (Decca, Philips) are UK, but I've had some problems with CDs which originate from BIS (e.g the Brilliant recordings of Martinu symphonies - 2 out of the 3 CDs have problems), and also with some of the CDs from the BBC Music Magazine. My test CD is the latest BBC MM disc, with Steven Isserlis playing cello pieces with Stephen Hough, Joshua Bell and the Bournemouth SO. BBC MM Vol 20 No 2.
This is a problem which should be fixed ASAP. To date I have seen maybe 10 CDs which have this problem, and of course, I can't be sure that all the ones which don't have the very obvious distortion, are OK. I know one problem CD - from the CFM (Classical FM Magazine) last month of Mahler 2 conducted by Horenstein has pre-emphasis, which should be decoded properly with a decent ripper, but whether that is a factor or not I do not know.
I'm not sure whether I need to cross post this on the iTunes Windows site - as the issues are there too.

I think iTunes is mishandling CDs with pre-emphasis. I tried to listen to several Hyperion CDs using the current version of iTunes (10.5.1.42). Those with pre-emphasis were distorted while those without were fine. iTunes seems to be amplifying pre-emphasis CDs instead of attenuating them.

I used my Windows 7 laptop to rip the CD and put the mp3 songs on a shared network drive. From my MBA (mavericks, itunes 11.1.3) I can see the music. I am unable to play these mp3 songs using default iTunes player. When I try to drag the songs plus sign shows up but nothing gets copied. I have tried creating empty playlist but nothing goes in there. I also tried playing the songs using quick time and all play fine.
Is there anything else I am missing?
    Thanks
    Neeraj

If anyone comes across this, I am expericing the same thing on iTunes 11.1.5. If I first copy the mp3 to the my system I can add or play it without issues, but if I try from the NFS volume it silently fails.
If I check the logs I see the following entry, which seems related, but it doesn't happen every time:
5/4/14 01:57:04.999 iTunes[47723]: BUG in libdispatch client: kevent[EVFILT_WRITE] delete: "No such file or directory" - 0x2
