Suddenly unable to save changes to shared document (10.6.4 server & client)

Hi,
a client of mine has a network with a 10.6.4 server and mixed clients (10.6.4 and 10.5.8). People edit documents within shared folders (mainly using Word and Pages) and all works as expected until, sometimes, some of them suddenly can't save changes to the file they were working on, so they have to save it locally (BTW, the mounted disks are still accessible)
The strange thing is that the above does usually happen around 7 PM: I've tried to find out if there are periodic maintenance tasks on the server, other than "daily" (scheduled at 3 AM), but I found none.
The server is running Time Machine, but I've disabled backup of either OpenDirectory and SharePoints data to temporarily avoid a known problem related to it (spontaneous unmount of network volumes and so on).
Thanks for your help!

It sounds like a permissions error within her Home folder. Repair Permissions doesn't touch anything within the Home folder. Use this procedure for that...
1. Start up from your Install Disk.
2. Choose your language.
3. Choose "Reset Password" from the "Utilities" Menu.
(Don't worry we are not going to do that.)
4. Choose the option at the bottom to Repair Permissions and ACLs on your Home Folder.
5. When finished restart from HDD.
Terminal would be quicker,,,
sudo chown -R $USER ~press enter
You'll be prompted for your password, when you enter it, it will be invisible. Next enter this command…
chmod -R u+rwX ~press enter
-mj

• I am puzzled by iMac(Intel ?). I am running an iMac 24 and use Mac:Office 2008. After having downloaded my Os X LION upgrade, I am suddenly unable to SAVE (and thus alter) my Excel quotations. This is a major issue for a salesman. Can anybody help me

I am puzzled by the meaning of iMac (Intel) as I use an iMac 2 period. I am running Mac : Office 2004 and do all my quotations in Excel. After upgrading to OS X LION, I am suddenly unable to SAVE my spreadsheets. As a salesman whose quotations need frequent updating, my situation is perilous to say the least. Can anyone help me ?

Office for Mac 2004 is NOT compatible with Lion. It must be upgraded to Office for Mac 2008 or 2011, once you have upgraded the files will be accessable. Office for Mac 2004 is written for old PPC (Power PC) based machines. Beginning with Lion support for PPC based apps has been dropped.

• Unable to save changes to Interactive form

Hi All
I am designing an Interactive form in the WD Java application. This form is in DC which belongs to TRACK1.
After making changes to the form I try to save the changes by clicking "Save All Metadata" but that has no effect. when i close the form and reopen it, the all changes made are gone.
From some threads i got that Interactive form should not be kept blank. But even after assigning all the attributes to Form I am unable to save the changes to PDF.
While as changes made to PDF in another DC belonging to TRACK2 are getting saved.
Does that mean the track in perticular has to be given some perticular authorization? or does that depend on authoriztions of userid which created the track?
Please help me in resolving this issue

Hi Amita
actually when i tried to modify the XDP file, i found that for all DCs in that particular track no XDP file has been generated. also that the templateSource property of the InteractiveForm UI Element is blank while as it should point to the template on file system.
i checked the SAPNote 822198 as suggested on this thread Link: [Adobe Document Server issues - cannot save metadata of interactive form UI; but it has not solved my issue.
can you please suggest wat the issue might be??

• How do I save changes to a document using VPN, Safari and Excel Mac?

Hi. I'm using VPN to reach documents on a server. I want to make changes to an excel document and save the changes back to the server. I'm using Safari and Excel Mac. When I'm finish making changes I tried to save the document back to the server. The changes was not saved? When I tried it on a PC it works well. Why can't I save the changes? Hope somebody can help me :-) Thanks a lot. Åke from Norway.

I did this after I wrote this. I have looked at the documentation but I can't find what I am looking for. Is there another way to open a file for viewing that has the full capabilities or using the normal program...one that uses something besides AxAcroPDFLib.AxAcroPDF. The sample that did have a view used AxAcroPDFLib.AxAcroPDF so it wasn't helpful. All I need is normal program functionality of adobe standard or profession within the application. The users have a full version installed on their PC.
Thanks again.

• After updating, I'm unable to save changes in InCopy.

I just updated my InDesign and InCopy to the latest versions. Both my client and I are unable to save in InCopy because that command is now grayed out. Saving works in InDesign. When the client checks in the content, I can see his changes even though he isn't able to save them. Any ideas on how to get the save command to work again?

I'm going back to Internet Explorer

• [CS5] Unable to save or close a document

I'm working on porting a plugin from CS4 to CS5. One of its functions is to save each page of a document as a separate file. It does this by saving a copy of the main document, opening it, removing the unwanted pages, and finally saving it. This worked fine in all previous InDesign versions, but in CS5 IDocFileHander is returning false for CanSave() and CanClose(). Ignoring that, or processing a save or close command directly, causes ID to enter protective shutdown.
There was another message posted recently with a similar problem ( http://forums.adobe.com/thread/647045?tstart=0 ), but I'm not performing my actions as part of a command or a command sequence. Is there another reason why InDesign wouldn't allow me to save or close a document?

Hello Andrew,
here is Adam from the thread you already read. I might some more hints for you. First, when I was saving my document, I needed to add a textframe, then export the document *with* the textframe to XML and after that I deleted the textframe so the user doest see anything. So it looked like:
SaveMyDoc(docref)
1. add a textframe
2. export my XML file
3. delete my textframe
4. call IDocFileHandler to save it <- here CanSaveAs Asserted
When I changed to following style, I got what I needed without the Assert
SaveMyDoc(docref)
1. call IDocFileHandler to save it
2. add a textframe
3. export my XML file
4. delete the textframe
I got no assert, but the document was dirty and the user had to do Save again which was not nice.
I added line 5:
call IDocFileHandler to revert to the saved file.
Now it feels OK.
More notes: my methods are in a facade in the model plugin and are called via Utils<IIMyUtils>(). I double checked my commands which set the persistent data in my document.
Lets hope what is written here is useful.

• Unable to save changes to embedded PDF inside Excel 2007

I'm using Excel 2007 & opening a document (in xls format). I embed an Acrobat 9 Pro PDF file into it. I right-click on the embedded PDF & choose Open, then make changes to it & try to save but I get "The document could not be saved. Cannot write to this file. Please save the document with a different name or in a different folder" error. How do you edit embedded PDF documents inside Excel 2007? Note: I can save the PDF externally, then edit it and put it back inside the Excel workbook. Thanks in advance for any help.

• Unable to save changes in web browser.

We have a PDF form that has been created to allow users to fill it out and save the changes made. The PDF was created with Adobe Acrobat 9 and our users are using Adobe Reader X. When they open the document inside a web browser (both FireFox and IE), the form can be edited, but says only a blank copy can be saved locally. However, if they first save the PDF locally without opening it in a browser, then make changes, they can save the whole thing. Is there a setting in the web browsers that needs to be changed?

OK, that particular file is not Reader-enabled, which means that Adobe Reader will not be able to save any changes after it has been filled in. You said that they can if they open the form outside of a web browser and impied they were using Adobe Reader 10. So, here are some possibilites:
1. They are indeed using Adobe Reader when opening the form outside of the web browser, but the version of the form they have has been Reader-enabled. This would mean that the version they're seeing in their browser is different than the version on their local system. This is probably not the case, but it's possible.
2. They are in fact not using Adobe Reader when viewing the form outside of a browser, but are using a PDF viewer that allows them to save a non-Reader-enabled document. Such viewers include Adobe Acrobat, the Preview application on a Mac, Foxit Reader, Nitro PDF Reader, and a few others.
In any case, Adobe Reader is not capable of saving a filled-in form that has not been Reader-enabled. So you just need to get more details to find out exactly what's going on.

• Unable to save to mysite - personal documents

We are not able to save desktop office document (2007 or 2010 32 bit) to Personal document folder on mysite. It is showing
folder structure on save as window; when you select personal documents it is prompting for enter domain credentials. Once correct credentials are entered, it is giving error
"You can’t save here. Please choose another location" even for site owners and administrators.
I check trusted location settings, still no changes
Also verified in CA as per suggestion http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sharepointsocialcomputing/thread/8b53517c-cef4-4494-8a48-e72257a691b7
Please help

I have had this as well for a MOSS 2007 and Word 2010 setup.
Try clicking along the locations in the left-hand area of the SaveAs dialogue box, then type in the http location of the document library/folder for your site.
I blogged about it here: http://blog.demo-listen.com/wp/?p=485

• Suddenly unable to save files edited in camera raw

Mac Pro, 2 TB drive, 8 GB RAM, lots of empty HD space. Nikon D4 RAW files
After using camera RAW to process thousands of photos and saving in jpg with this equipment, suddenly I get a message in a window, "the file could not be saved". I haven't changed any settings. I can work around by opening in PS and saving. Emptied cache and didn't resolve issue.
Suggestions?
Thanks
Don

Also, I no longer get anything in "File Naming" after "Example:". I'm wondering if Camera RAW has beome corrupted,
Not sure if I can follow your workflow because you also have files in iPhoto and Image Capture which settings both are not compatible with each other as with Camera Raw.
But you have two options to use ACR, either in PS or in Bridge. Select a problem file and with right mouse click menu choose Open in Camera Raw, this opens the file in ACR using Bridge, the normal open command opens ACR in PS.
This to see if it happens in both applications. If not reset prefs for the problem application, if both then maybe manual reinstall ACR plug in.
But in all cases, can you provide more details about OS version and exact PS, Bridge and ACR version (the latter in PS, menu Photoshop, about plug in / camera raw)

• Unable to save Pages 4.3 documents since 10.9.2 update

I like Pages 5.1, but have a lot of Pages 4.3 documents. I also use an app for creating wordsearches and crosswords which exports to Pages 4.3.
Prior to updating to OS 10.9.2 today, I was able to open 4.3 documents, edit them and save them.
I would be presented with the message 'This document is too old' and then be given the option to open it in 5.1
Once opened, I would also get a message box asking me if I wanted to convert the document to 5.1.
This no lonnger happens. I can open 4.3 documents using Pages 4.3, but cannot save them. Nor do I get asked to convert the file to 5.1.
What's happened?

Puzzlemaker is an app for Mac by Hokua Software
http://www.puzzlemakermac.com
I have been in touch with the developers who are looking into it.
They say:
"A temporary fix for the problem is to replace the & with the following:
&
and then export to Pages. The & symbol a special character used by Pages as its used in HTML, and thus when it sees the & it chokes. To render ampersand it needs to be converted to & first. This will be fixed in the next release"
Interesting!
