Suddenly white screen while online

Twice now my screen on my iMac suddenly turned white while I was online. The only way I could turn off the iMac was to pull out the plug. When I turned it on again the screen was normal. It never happened at the start up. Any ideas why this is happening? There was no way to shut down the iMac other than pull the plug. I tried everything. I'm obviously not a techie but could use your advice. This has happened since I updated to Snow Leopard.Thank you!

Ok, it sounds like you're all good now? If you had any sensitive information on the HD, you'll want to at least zero the HD, or do a 7 Pass Erase (boot from install disc > Utilities menu > Erase > Security Options). Note that this will take time, maybe a few hours (but at 76 hours, it sounds like you're the patient type ). After that, quit DU and continue with the installation process.

  • Sudden white screen on my macbook pro resulting in distorted image

After a sudden white screen, I tried to boot my macbook into recovery mode and the screen started to have some purple straps all over the place. Also, I noticed random distorted startup screen (the grey background and apple logo) and then would end up in a white screen or blue screen.
I pretty much tried everything from verifying and fixing errors on the hard drive to running AHT (apple hardware tests) and I am still not sure what caused the issue. After a dozen or so of reboots the computer seems to work fine but I don't really know if I should be worried or not. I am a bit worried that the video card might fail at some point and this is just the beggining.
Did anyone encountered anything like this before?

    Try resetting your SMC.
Resetting the SMC of an Intel-based portable Mac with a battery you should not remove on your own
Note: This will not delete any data.
The SMC is responsible for controlling various system functions. None of your data will be deleted by resetting the SMC.
Shut down the computer by going to Apple () > Shut Down…
Select Shut Down or allow the computer to shut down automatically.
Plug in the MagSafe power adapter into a power source and then connect it to your Mac if you have not already done so.
On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.
Release the (left side) Shift (⇧), Control (⌃), and Option (⌥) keys and the Power Button at the same time.

  • White screen while restoring?

I am restoring my MBP to it's out-of-the-box condition with the install disc. I understand that I should get a white screen while restoring, but the screen has been white for over 76hrs. Is this normal? It has been plugged in for the most part. I unplugged it once for about an hour and the screen went black/sleep. I plugged it back in and nothing happened so I pushed the on/off button. The white screen came on again as well as the startup chime.
How long is too long for the screen to stay white?
    Thanks.

  • White screen while charging?

Yesterday I woke up and my phone was completely dead. It had been charging all night, turned one for 2 seconds, said low battery and shut off. Every time I tried to turn it on it the red light would turn on for about 10-15 seconds and then shut off. I went and bought a new battery and now the phone works great. The only problem is now when I charge my phone, instead of the phone staying on it shuts off and has a white screen while charging. Can someone please tell me why this is doing this and if there is any way of changing it? Thank you

  • Sudden white screen

When you are sitting and working, sudden all screens becomes white/colored and you need to restart the computer in order to solve the problem. Does any one knows any solution to this problem? It occurs once in a while....?

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Sudden White Screen - Won't Recover

My iMac G4 hadn't given me a lick of trouble until last night. I left it on, as I usually do, while I was gone for about 45 minutes. When I got back, the screen was white. Restarting it didn't help. Unplugging it and starting it didn't help. When I restart it, I get the start up sounds, but just a white screen. Any help or suggestions for my monitor? It's about 4 years old now...
    Thanks
    Meg

    Hi there...
I'm not sure which reset may affect displays in the iMacG4 computer; in
that some may help if there is no hardware defect, just a minor logic issue
    and not a component failure.
Have you tried on startup to reset the PRAM? That is a handful, since the
power button is on the back of the computer and you need to hold 4 buttons
    down on the keyboard simultaneously just after the startup tone sounds;
and then keep holding them until you hear two more startup tones. The 4
    buttons are Opt + Apple + R + P.
My computer had an odd video issue after installing the recent security
update; but only in open application windows. I tried several things to
hope to be rid of it; now it looks OK. My AppleCare goes until September.
I am not sure if something as drastic as "Resetting the PMU" would help
resolve this kind of issue. If you have the original video VGA adapter
and a 17" or so VGA (cathode ray tube model) computer display, you
could attach an external display to see if the video card is working that
far; and may be able to see other control panels; and further troubleshoot.
Usually if something such as the clock battery goes dead, you could still
get a computer to work; the date and time could be way off (unless it is
able to reset them automatically by the Apple Time Server online) and
a few other clues would normally be present. Some models may have
a display issue if the 3.6v lithium battery on the board goes dead. But
it should not wink out the display while you are using it, or while it is
powered-up. There are a few occasions where a issue may develop
in one of these, when it may have tried to sleep, but for whatever reason
the display does not go out. I am not sure if that's anything to do with
the symptoms you've experienced; but things can happen.
At some point, it may be necessary to contact a local authorized service
provider and see if they have a qualified product specialist or (?) some
person capable of further troubleshooting; and get an estimate. They
may just try to throw parts at it, if they can't diagnose the true issues.
If so, you may have to rethink what to do next; perhaps find an honest
shop that is an Apple Specialist in the first place, with a reputation.
Wish I could be of more help; and I hope some keyboard or PMU reset
can help wake up your semi-comatose iMacG4 so the LCD works again.

  • Sudden white screen during use, which requires reboot.

This has just started happening while I'm browsing the internet (with Firefox), and I'm forced to restart before I can continue. It's happened roughly 3 times in the last week and naturally I'm concerned as to the cause. Any help is greatly appreciated in advance...

I have 24 inch iMac and I get either an almost black screen/white screen or sometimes a green and white vertical pinstriped screen. This happens suddenly with no warning & I have to hold the start button in to shut down. It then starts up fine with apparently no harm done. It is very annoying but I need to know why my Apple is doing this. Computer is around 2-3 years old and now running 10.6.8. I had to buy this as when I inherited the machine know one knew where the OS software was.
Does anyone rate Genius bar - can they determine what the prob is? I took a G5 tower in as it wouldn't start but they were unable to help - local PC shop sorted it charging me £100 - realised later it needed a new battery (£7) so you can't rely on anyone out there I'm afraid!
I will need a new iMac 27 inch anytime soon but am loath to give anyone currently selling machines the money!

  • Blackberry 8520 curve hangs, suddenly white screen comes and the only solution is to re-insert battery with power source on?

My Blackberry 8520 curve suddenly hangs giving a white screen and when i restart it - the screen remains white. After i put it into charge - then only a successful start is done. So the only solution as of now i have - is whenever my blackberry hangs - i need to remove the battery - insert it again - and immediately put it into charging via USB/Electric-Power. Even if i re-insert the battery - the white screen comes - unless and until i put it into charging Earlier i was guessing - my battery was weak - but no such problem. pls advise.

  • IPad Air gets suddenly white screen and black apple

When I am working, my iPad Air gets suddenly (one or two times per week) white screen and black apple screen for a few seconds before I get back the control, anyone has the same problem?

It could be an OS issue but I would not bet on it. I just had a similar case myself (but white apple on black screen) on two unconnected devices almost simultaneously - both on an iPad and on an iPod touch. It is possible that there is something different going on here, perhaps at Apple's servers.
It could of course also just be a coincidence.

  • White screen while moving MBP lid?

It has come to my attention that when I am on my MacBook Pro, seeming to be after an hour or so, when I move the lid (screen), it is as if my graphics processor quit working and a white screen appears with some color streaks in it. In order to get it appearing again, I most close the lid and bring it up again. And if I do so much as bump it sometimes, it does it again. Anyone noticing anything else similar?

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds like you might have a problem with your inverter or inverter cable rather than with the graphics chip itself. I would guess the cable since moving the screen will affect it. See if you can try an external display. If you get the same artifact on the external display, it would point to the graphics chip. However, if the external display is fine while the internal display has the artifact, that would indicate that the graphics chip itself is OK, and the problem is with the internal display or its connection.
    Good luck!

  • Sudden white screen during use...

I've only had my new iMac for a few days and although it was bought used, it's been extremely well looked after, and things were great until just now when the screen went completely white rendering the mouse useless and forcing me to disconnect the power lead and start up again. Should I be alarmed or is there a simple explanation and a reliable cure to hand?

  • IMac goes to blank white screen while using have to unplug

For the second time now my iMac 2.8 ghz Core 2 Duo has gone to a blank white screen right in the middle of doing work. The machine sounds the same but the only way to get it back is to unplug it. I've searched around and found booting issues but that is not my problem. It just goes blank white right in the middle of using it.

    What "restore icon"?
If you have the Mac OS X install disc in the drive, switch on your Mac, and hold the Option (⌥) key.
You will see a grey screen, with Macintosh HD & after a few seconds, a CD with Mac OS X Install DVD.
Click on the DVD and then the arrow underneath it. This will start up the Mac OS X installer.
From here, you need to choose your language and then from the Utilities menu, choose Disk Utility.
Then choose Macintosh HD from the left, and choose "Verify Disk" not permissions
Let us know how you go.
