Sudo error: "pam_authenticate: unknown user"

Hello, all.
I have an Xserve running Snow Leopard Server that occasionally reports "Access Denied" in Remote Desktop. Normally I SSH into the machine and use kickstart to restart ARD.
Today, when I tried to SSH into the machine, the password is no accepted. "Permission denied (publickey,gssapi-keyex,gssapi-with-mic,keyboard-interactive)." So no SSH, no ARD but luckily I was able to remote in with VNC.
sudo will not execute any commands; I get the error "sudo: pam_authenticate: unknown user"
This machine is logged in as "Administrator" (an admin account) and the password is correct. (I am able to connect a shared drive using the same credentials)
"whoami" returns "admin" so it knows what account to use and I know the password is correct so I'm at a loss as to explain what's going on. Google has let me down on this error.

Yes, yes indeed you are... oh dear that's embarrassing!
I knew a girl once, and she always told me to look for the simple answers: in this case, are you using the damn program correctly!!!
Which I wasn't... thank you for that bender02... now I'll go sit in a corner for a while... lol

    Hi Ychinnari,
    I have tested on my local environment and can reproduce the issue, as
    Vaishu00547 mentioned that the issue can be caused by the Execution Account you have configured in the Reporting Services Configuration Manager is not correct, Please update the Username and Password and restart the reporting services.
    Please also find more details information about when to use the execution account, if possible,please also not specify this account:
    This account is used under special circumstances when other sources of credentials are not available:
    When the report server connects to a data source that does not require credentials. Examples of data sources that might not require credentials include XML documents and some client-side database applications.
    When the report server connects to another server to retrieve external image files or other resources that are referenced in a report.
    Execution Account (SSRS Native Mode)
    If you still have any problem, please feel free to ask.

    Hi there,
    looks like you entered "DBADMIN" when you created the liveCache instance in DBMGUI as the DBM Operator.
    For SAP installations, this user is always named "CONTROL".
    So, drop the instance again, recreate it with "CONTROL" and re-do the recovery of the liveCache backup.

  • Unknown User Error Message, Do I have a Virus?

    Today I checked my AOL email and had over 40 messages in my inbox all within a very short time frame. I recognize most of the email addresses that came back with the Unknown User messages. I did not send any emails out and there is no record in my sent box that says that I send those emails. Could I have a Virus? I always thought mac computers don't get viruses. I am concern that I have one and if I do what should I do. I did change my password to my email after it happen. Here is a copy of one of the email error messages that I got. For the protection of my friends email and mine I changed it in this copy of the email. Friends email- [email protected], My email- [email protected]. I also got one additional email that was sent to me, from me that I never sent. Again no email in my sent box and of course I did not click on the link that was in that email. I will also post that email but will change only my email. Please do not click on the link since I am thinking it might be a virus but I wanted to include it, hoping it will help. Thank you in advance for your help.

    The email that I got that was from me, to me. Again do not open the link, I would feel horrible if caused anyones computer harm, again I also changed my email address for the posting.
    hi! Jen!http://made-of.fr/to.php Best regards, ,[email protected]

    The emails are almost certainly coming from someone else's computer, not from your account. This will be definite if you can't see any of these emails in any of your "sent mail" folders and only are finding out about it by mail bouncing back or someone telling you that they've received such an email from your email address.
    This type of infection, which exclusively infests Windows systems, uses a technique known as "spoofing," (mentioned by the other posters) by which the virus or worm randomly selects an email address it finds on an infected computer. The virus/worm uses this address as the "From" address when it performs its mass-mailing routine rather than using the real email address of the user of the infected system. If your address happens to be the one randomly chosen, then anyone receiving one of these emails sees your email address as the apparent sender. In addition, if any messages bounce back (either because the address is no longer valid or the mail server finds the virus and rejects the message), you get hit with the bounce rather than the actual (unknowing) sender, even though the messages didn't come from your system and may be from addresses you've never heard of.
    Here's an example; Jane is using a computer infected with a Windows email virus or worm. Jane is either not using an antivirus program or does not have current virus definitions. When the virus/worm activates and runs, it randomly searches the Windows address book and finds the email address of Bill. The worm inserts Bill's email address into the "From" portion of an infected message, which it then sends to Janet. Janet then contacts Bill and complains that he sent her an infected message. When Bill scans his computer, the virus checker does not find anything, because his computer is not infected.
    There's nothing you can do if, as appears to be the case, the emails aren't coming from you. All you can do is notify all your friends and colleagues who have Windows systems and who would know your email address and get them to update their antivirus protection.
    Regards.

  • Unknown User Name(Server) error

    Got the following error message in Fabric Manager "Unknown User Name(Server)". Any clues to what it might mean?
    Cheers.

    It means 1 of 2 things. That there was a timeout before FM could discover that switch or that username/password is not correct for that switch. If this is local authentication, then reset the password for the snmp user you are using to login to this switch. Is this one of many switches and the other ones are accessible?

  • AD SSO "unknown user" error

    Hi all,
    I've been having trouble with AD SSO on NAC deployed in L2 OOB VG mode.
    Users are getting a message that says:
    Unknown user
    Please contact your administrator if the problem persists.
    I check the event logs in the NAC Manager and it says "Unknown user via ADSSO, [MAC_ADDRESS ## IP_ADDRESS] user@DOMAIN"
    The AS SSO service is shown as "started" for the NAC Server however, running the command "netstat -a | grep 8910" at the terminal returns nothing.
    I also try an auth test to see if there was a problem with the agent but that shows up with the same "unknown user" error.
    I tried creating an LDAP authentication server with the same options as the LDAP lookup server for AD SSO and I get the same error.
    The AD SSO was working a few days ago and the System Admin says he hasn't changed anything in the domain controller. I haven't changed anything else in the NAC config except I started rolling it out to more users.
    Anyone have any idea what the problem could be?

    Hi huicab,
    The problem was that the LDAP user in the AD was in the wrong OU. I'm not the sys admin so I'm just telling you what he told me lol.
    We sniffed the port of the AD server and he realised that the credentials were being denied by AD even though no failed login attempts were logged in the system (weird =/). So he did some stuff on the user, double checked the password and all the other values and it started working. I have no clue how come it stopped working though. Now that you mention it, it was probably a security patch in the domain controller that stops users in a certian OU or outside of a certain OU from doing certain stuff. I dunno I'm really not a Windows guy but I'd recommend using Wireshark to sniff the Domain Controller's NIC at the time of the AD SSO login attempts to see what packets it gets and what reply it sends out, then you can take action from there.
    Hope this helps!

    Hello Gurus,

    Has anyone a suggestion?!

    Have you tried, if you can actually do SQL with that user? Maybe there is a problem with the SQL authorization?
    Does the following work for you?

I can observe the error message almost every minute in the Log file and I have the impression that this message occours more often before the portal has more "problems" in general and is for a short time not accecible (it freezes and sometimes a java server restarts itself). I am asking myself if this error message could give a hint for the system crash we have had today. (a restart of the host was needed.)
    However I would like to know what causes the error message?
    It is a critical error message? It means can it cause a system crash? Or is it not important?
    What can I do to solve the problem?
    I appreciate your helful answers.
    Thanks in advance.

    Check this for the roles required for integration builder [http://help.sap.com/SAPHELP_NW04S/helpdata/en/c4/51104159ecef23e10000000a155106/content.htm]
    Accordingly get the required role assigned to the user you are using there.
    Unlock the user if it is locked
    Reset the password and provide the new password in the login settings
    Give a try again

    Hi Joe -
    I attempted to install the Azure Powershell using the instructions here:
    http://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/documentation/articles/install-configure-powershell/
    Upon completion I was unable to find Azure Powershell from Start/Programs:
    I then attempted to re-install Azure Powershell.  Initially, it came up with the error: "There was an error loading custom feed: 'http://www.microsoft.com/web/webpi/2.0/ToolsProductList.xml'. Error: 'ProductId PHP not found.'."
    I clicked OK and WPI indicated that the Azure Powershell would be installed.  I clicked INSTALL and WPI showed Azure Powershell in the list, but the Total File Download size was 0MB.  I clicked I ACCEPT and it immediately blinked back that Azure
    Powershell was installed.
    When I clicked FINISH, however, the following was displayed:
    Here is the the log file from the latest attempt:

    I have the following pof-config.xml file in my project
    From properties file:
    tangosol.pof.config=webcontent-pof-config.xml
    XML:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE pof-config SYSTEM "pof-config.dtd">
    <pof-config>
        <user-type-list>
            <include>coherence-pof-config.xml</include>
            <user-type>
                <type-id>16001</type-id>
                <class-name>com.trgr.cobalt.webcontent.coherence.PortableProperties</class-name>
            </user-type>
        </user-type-list>
    </pof-config>
    PortableProperties is a pretty simple class that we use to interact with the coherence cache. It simply uses a Map<String, Object>, and reads/writes the contents to the Pof. Here is the class signature for reference
    public class PortableProperties extends AbstractEvolvable implements PortableObject, Serializable
    From what I can tell, that is all the configuration you need. Does anyone have any clue what I am missing to make this work? Thanks.

    It seems that your application is loading the default POF config file and not the one defined by you in you configuration, due to which it cannot find the user-type defined by you.
    Can you please share the logs which you get on your console while starting up the server

  • When I respond to certain messages, I get an error message "unknown host" or "unknown user." Why is this?

    Since the latest upgrade to 31.0, there are times when I will receive an e-mail, but when I send a reply, I get a response saying the message is undeliverable because of an unknown user, or an unknown host. These are messages, I'm replying to and have already received, so it's not a case of typing in an incorrect address.
    This happens using both my computer and phone. Not sure why this is suddenly happening now, and why only with certain addresses. Any suggestions? Thanks.

    my guess is they have invalid replyto information in the header. As it is on two devices, one of which can not run Thunderbird it is certainly not a Thunderbird issue.

  • Windows Security Error! Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password

    We RANDOMLY can't access one of the computers in our company's network. It is now saying - Windows Security - Logon failure: unknown user name or bad password. It doesn't matter what I put in for a user name and pw it still doesn't work.
    Any help is much appreciated!

    To be added, if it is part of domain, is this computer had local account? If so, try to logon local account for test, If sucessfully, follow Cyber's suggestion remove PC from domain and rejoin it for test.
    If not, you can try to boot system into recovery mode and choose recovery computer for test.
    Press F8 at startup, then choose Recovery system.

    Troubleshooting Tip: If HSS is configured for an NTLM provider, DRM services may not start due to error: "Exception Emdm_Exception with message 'Could not Initialize CSS. Error: 'getOSVersion'."
    You may receive the following error after clicking the "Enable CSS" button in DRM Console: “LoadLibrary("C:\Hyperion\Master Data Management\mdm_ntier_css_validator.dll") failed - The specified module could not be found.”
    To resolve both of these conditions, update the Windows System Path on the Data Relationship Management server with the applicable JRE and CSS pathing below.
    NOTE: Reboot the Data Relationship Management server machine after making any changes to the Windows Path.
    NOTE: Ensure that only one JRE version and one CSS version are referenced in the Windows Path.

    I found these is no directory "%HYPERION_HOME%\common\CSS\9.2.0\bin;" exists but "%HYPERION_HOME%\common\CSS\9.2.1\bin;"
    I configured PATH by setting to above, and tried CSSExport again, still failed.
    Than I disabled the NTLM is HSS, tried CSSExport again. It was successful.
    So I am convinced that the problem caused by NTLM or PATH environment variable or some files associated.
    Does anybody know the solution ?

    I recommend you upgrade at least to 10.1.0.5. 10.1.0.2 comes with the very first version of csalter.plb, which has not the current implementation. From and to which character set do you try to migrate?
