I have just convinced my friend to buy a white MacBook instead of the HP laptop she was planning to buy.
Now, can any of you suggest a good online reseller who would give a good deal on the MacBook (with maybe free RAM, etc)?
Shipping needs to be reliable.

MacMall is good for new, I don't know for used.

Any Mac will be faster than an 8-year old one (especially since that Mac is almost certainly PowerPC-based).
You've posted in the Mac Pro forum, but ironically that's the one Mac that wouldn't really make sense (they're very expensive and are generally overkill for most home applications).
The iMacs are probably what you want to look at - I would go into an Apple Store and look at the two sizes to determine what works best for you. The 27" has expandable RAM; the 21" doesn't, so you are advised, if you buy the smaller, to max out the RAM from Apple to 16GB when you buy it.
Don't forget that they lack optical drives now, so you'll need an external USB drive if you use a lot of CD/DVDs. (Doesn't need to be an Apple Superdrive.)

Would You Sell A MacBook For A MacBook Air?

I am thinking about selling my Macbook for the new MacBook Air.
Do you think that is a dumb idea?
Is there anything that the MacBook Air offers that the MacBook doesn't? I use my MacBook mainly for internet surfing, mail, typing papers and a little Photoshop editing if I am on the go. I use my iMac for heavy duty things.
For the people that have an Air and that had a (or have) MacBook, can you tell a difference in the weight when you are traveling with it?

We (our 2-person business) have owned an AirBook since Wednesday (13FEB2008) evening.
I think Apple created a great product.
1. It is very sexy. When you visit the Apple Store, the appropriate verb is: fondle.
2. It is light and yet feels rigid.
3. The Remote Disc feature works very well. I bought the USB-Ethernet adapter and connected to our LAN. I then installed: MS Office 2008 (only took 20% longer than on my iMac), iWork and Adobe Creative Suite (which took forever; as it did on my iMac). I did not try using Remote Disc in a wireless mode because that just seems silly.
4. Only one USB port. So what. This is our travel computer. On the road we will use the USB port to connect to the wired hotel LAN or our camera. Don’t need both at the same time. We use a Kensington Bluetooth mouse so we don’t need USB for that. From our perspective, a single USB port is enough.
5. We don’t take DVDs on the road so we don’t need a built-in DVD device.
6. The screen is bright and has a wide viewing angle. This was THE deciding factor for us to sell our MacBook get the AirBook.
7. The backlit keyboard is a very “nice to have” feature.
8. It seems very responsive. I have not run a lot of tests, but it did not seem sluggish (except when launching Word 2008 — what is with those MS people?). i was very surprised by how quickly Safari launched. Photoshop and Illustrator appear to launch at “normal” speed.
9. Could I wish for improvements? Of course. 4 GB of memory. More is always better. A 160 GB hard drive. More is… But, overall, I think the AirBook is well designed and well suited to its niche as a secondary computer.

As my tower is whirring like the proverbial jet, I was told at the Genius Bar to back everything up before trouble-shooting. I've researched various 500 GB ext. hard drives, but they all seem to have drawbacks. My biggest priority is reliability. Any ideas? Thanks.

APOGEE DUET USERS plus MacBook for Sale . . . sort of . . .

Hello.
I decided on getting an Apple Duet for my new interface. As I only need two inputs at a time, it is a logical choice as it is only made for Macs and I just bought a MacBook Pro with 4G RAM and 2.2Mhz processor. I love this much more than the MacBook that I burned up last Friday. Anyone need a MacBook with 2G RAM and 100G HD and CD/DVD-2L drive? I think that if one is skilled, he or she should be able to clean the coffee out of it and it will more than likely run like new. I would even throw in AppleCare good until Nov./09. If anyone wants to gamble on this, I would sell the MacBook for $300.
Now, for the real business. I would like to know if Duet users would like to have a place to go to discuss the DUET, its setup and functions, tips and tricks, etc. Well, do you want this? If you are really running OS X "Leopard", you should be aware that Apple stopped providing updates for it years ago. On the other hand your profile also indicates you are using a Power Mac, and they do not use Intel CPUs. The good news about that is that the PowerPC platform has become so uncommon that they are extremely unlikely to be the target of any sort of malware or virus attempts. So, more information is required, but lacking that most of the following principles apply equally well to any computer.
There will always be threats to your information security associated with using any Internet - connected communications tool:
You can mitigate those threats by following commonsense practices
Delegating that responsibility to software is an ineffective defense
Assuming that any product will protect you from those threats is a hazardous attitude that is likely to result in neglecting point #1 above.
OS X already includes everything it needs to protect itself from viruses and malware. Keep it that way with software updates from Apple.
A much better question is "how should I protect my Mac":
Never install any product that claims to "clean up", "speed up", "optimize", "boost" or "accelerate" your Mac; to "wash" it, "tune" it, or to make it "shiny". Those claims are absurd.Such products are very aggressively marketed. They are all scams.
Never install pirated or "cracked" software, software obtained from dubious websites, or other questionable sources.
Illegally obtained software is almost certain to contain malware.
"Questionable sources" include but are not limited to spontaneously appearing web pages or popups, download hosting sites such as C net dot com, Softonic dot com, Soft pedia dot com, Download dot com, Mac Update dot com, or any other site whose revenue is primarily derived from junk product advertisements.
If you need to install software that isn't available from the Mac App Store, obtain it only from legitimate sources authorized by the software's developer.
Don’t supply your password in response to a popup window requesting it, unless you know what it is and the reason your credentials are required.

Most of these are scams that direct you to fraudulent sites that attempt to convince you to disclose personal information.
Such "phishing" attempts are the 21st century equivalent of a social exploit that has existed since the dawn of civilization. Don’t fall for it.
Apple will never ask you to reveal personal information in an email. If you receive an unexpected email from Apple saying your account will be closed unless you take immediate action, just ignore it. If you ever receive a popup window indicating that your Mac is infected with some ick or that you won some prize, it is 100% fraudulent. Ignore it.
The same goes for a spontaneously appearing dialog insisting that you upgrade your video player right this instant. Such popups are frequently associated with sites that promise to deliver "free" movies or other copyrighted content that is not normally "free".
The more insistent it is that you upgrade or install something, the more likely it is to be a scam. Close the window or tab and forget it.
Ignore hyperventilating popular media outlets that thrive by promoting fear and discord with entertainment products arrogantly presented as "news". Learn what real threats actually exist and how to arm yourself against them:
The most serious threat to your data security is phishing. Most of these attempts are pathetic and are easily recognized, but that hasn't stopped prominent public figures from recently succumbing to this age-old scam.
OS X viruses do not exist, but intentionally malicious or poorly written code, created by either nefarious or inept individuals, is nothing new.
Never install something without first knowing what it is, what it does, how it works, and how to get rid of it when you don’t want it any more.
If you elect to use "anti-virus" software, familiarize yourself with its limitations and potential to cause adverse effects, and apply the principle immediately preceding this one.
Most such utilities will only slow down and destabilize your Mac while they look for viruses that do not exist, conveying no benefit whatsoever - other than to make you "feel good" about security, when you should actually be exercising sound judgment, derived from accurate knowledge, based on verifiable facts.
Do install updates from Apple as they become available. No one knows more about Macs and how to protect them than the company that builds them.
Summary: Use common sense and caution when you use your Mac, just like you would in any social context. There is no product, utility, or magic talisman that can protect you from all the evils of mankind.

This is quite an open suggestion, but here are some ideas which might get you started. There are good HD cameras in your price range from Sony, Panasonic and Canon (and maybe other manufacturers). Tapeless formats vary. I have only worked with Sony XDCAM which seems pretty good to me. File sizes for material shot at 35MBS are not too huge and, with the free Sony transfer and conversion programme, are easy to bring into the computer via USB direct from the camera or from a fairly inexpensive converter. The Sony XDCAM EX3 can produce results well up to broadcast quality.
As to hardware, you'll need a powerful MAC - iMac, Macbook Pro or MacPro with 4GB or more of RAM and a good video card. Softwarewise, FCPX is quite a bit cheaper than FC Studio 3 and of course it's 64bit and can make better use of multi-core machines than FCP7. It's also designed to handle HD formats with less hassle than FCP7 and is matched to the latest versions of Motion and Compressor. But you'd probably be wise to search reviews of FCPX before you make your choice - it has some issues.
A good HD monitor will be essential and, for colour correction etc, you may want to consider a second monitor or HD TV foe editing. ( A MacPro is generally the best machine to connect a second monitor to).
This should give you a good editing system, but there are many other things you could add (Photoshop, professional sound monitors, etc)

If your budget is unlimited, look at both the retina and non-retina and make a decision based on your preferences. If funds are tight, explore the options in the refurbished section. Unless you are dealing with courses that demand specific performance parameters, any one of these options will suffice.
