Suggest Camcorder less than $500, prefer not tape

Pardon the awkwardly worded headline.
Do I still need a tape camera to edit with FCP Express?
Would prefer not. Regardless, suggestions of a good camcorder for less than $500 greatly appreciated. Shooting mostly family stuff. Don't know if I can accomodate the extra disk space required by HD.
Thanks for any guidance.

"Do I still need a tape camera to edit with FCP Express?"
No.
" suggestions of a good camcorder for less than $500"
Any standard AVCHD Video Camera will do the job using FCE > Log & Transfer.
Cameras are personal and features are important such as headphone socket, external mic input and an OIS (optical image stabilizer).
You need to test drive cameras in your buget zone to try how they fit into your hand and where buttons are located etc.
3 sensor chips are important to boost the image quality as is the quality of the lens, usually found in the higher end camcorders.
Second hand solid state cameras may put a high end cam into the budget. They have hardly any moving parts as compared the old tape cameras and thus second hand solid state cams are a safer purchase second hand than tape cams.
As far as HD space you should get yourself an external fast drive eg. firewire, thunderbolt or USB 3 for media storage. As big as you can afford.
Nowdays that's about a 1Terabyte or so.
HD video when absorbed to FCE will use around 40 gig per hour and the render files during editing will keep the gigs climbing.

• How do I reduce a picture to less than 50kb and less than 500 by 500 ratio?

I'm trying to upload pictures to a Web site that requires the size of the picture to be no larger than 50kb, as well as less than 500 by
500.
I've tried cropping and exporting. I can get the aspect to less than
500 by 500, but then the kb size gets larger.
Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
iPhoto won't downsize your photos, since your original would lose much quality if you could do that. Just crop to best suit the aesthetics of the photo. Then to resize for the website, do File > Export > File Export to a Desktop folder. Instead of "full size" select "scale photos no larger than" and type 500 pixels in one of the dimension boxes. (Choose the larger dimension - width for landscape photos, or height for portrait.) iPhoto will automatically constrain the proportions and enter the second amount. Only the exported copies will be resized. Upload those from the Desktop to the website, then trash when finished.
Regards.

• How to control Netpay amount for minimum payment case i.e. can't be less than 500

Hi
My user is coming up with a new scenario in relate to netpay amount. The netpay amount can't be less than 500 in any case where total deduction(monthly) is more than the gross(monthly). Let's say an employee's gross salary is Rs. 10,000 and the total deduction amount is 10,500 so in that case the netpay will be 500. The balance deduction amount i.e. Rs. 1000 will be carry fwd to the next month's deduction.
Please guide me to work on the above scenario..
Thanks,
Santosh

You can maintain this fixed amount in the Minimum net pay - Fixed Amount Constant (MNPAM) of table view Payroll Constants (V_T511P).

• Will a g4 17" powerbook purchased new n 2006 accept a SATA less than 500 GB HDD

I have a 17"G4 powerbook lap top purchased new in 2006. The HDD just went on a walkabout. I want to knowifthe puter willl accept a SATA less than 500GB 7200 rpm HDD replacement. If so what bits and pieces would I need to effect such an upgrade?

This is what you are stuck with in the G4.
Hard Drive Interface
Ultra ATA/100 (ATA-6)
Links to this kind of drive. Or try google and Amazon (2.5 ATA hard drive). There isn't as much choice as these have not been OEM equiped for several years. I bought a spare for my G4 12" some time ago just in case I would need it. Finding a SCSI drive is even more challenging

I have just migrated an old FreeBSD environment to OSX Server (MacMini) and have a problem. I have given all users the same UIDs they had under FreeBSD (in the range 100 to 200). I do need these UIDs for the main database app.
How can I get serveradmin to see these UIDs?

As per the following, I see the users with the second command. I want to make the users in the following list between UIDs 100 and 120 visible in serveradmin so I can let a local user edit the afp and smb privs.

• (BUG): using less than operator in javascript

I am using Jdeveloper 11.1.1.5.0, ADF BC, ADF Faces.
I am trying to add some java script validation in my page, just want to check if the length of an input field is less than three or not.
here is the function I used
function filterForNumbers(evt){
var inputField = evt.getSource();
var oldValue  = inputField.getValue();
var myField   = inputField.findComponent("it2");
var len = oldValue.length;
if (len < 3)
alert ("the length is <  3" );
myField.setValue("");
}when I use the less then operator (<) in this part
if (len < 3)ADF frame work considers the < as an open tag and when I run the page, it shows this error message in the log
Error(16,16):  Illegal token.
and the page does not run.
workaround*
using this syntax instead
if (3 > len)

I tried your suggestion with and without space. What I get is that the there is no thing on the page (only blank page is shown).

• Error Writing Less Than Sign with FileAdapter

Hello.
Looking at the Flow Trace I can that the input variable of the FileAdapter is being populated correctly (XML tags). When looking at the file's contents though, the result of the less than sign is its character entity: '&lt';.
Is there a way to force it to print the less than sign? Also, why does it write the character entity for the less than sign and not the greater than sign?
Thanks.
Edited by: oracleistheway on May 24, 2013 6:32 AM

Hi Arik. Thank you for that information but it is not working. I think it is not working because the DOE feature is done during an XSL process.
I was able to get my desired result by creating a native file and Delimited type. I then selected File contains only one record and had it delimited by Single Space and no optional delimiter.
Thank you all for looking at this thread.

• How can I get my stereo to play music videos from my Ipod Nano? It comes up with the message "This device not supported". Strangely my Iphone IS recognised. The stereo, Ipod, and Iphone are less than 4 months old. Any suggestions welcome!

How do I get my Ipod to play music videos through my theatre system? I keep getting the message "This device not supported". My theatre system WILL recognise my Iphone however. The theatre system, Ipod, and Iphone are all less than 4 months old. Any suggestions welcome!

Check with the theater system vendor and see if their system is compatible with the Nano. The resolution on the Nano may be too low for the system.

• Time Machine wants 16 days to do an initial backup. ps shows PRI = 33 with NI = 0. But I can not get sudo renice to set PRI less than 15. And renice sets NI directly with strange behavior for PRI. Any suggestions?

Time Machine said it would take 16 days to do an initial backup, and indeed, after many days it is less than a quarter done. (The problem started when I put in a new bank disk for Time Machine to write to for its backup file.)
Activity Monitor shows that the process name is backups with Process ID 6060.
Then putting this PID in Terminal UNIX command ps gave:
EdsMacPro-1:~ ed$ ps -l -p 6060
UID PID PPID F CPU PRI NI SZ RSS ...
0  6060     1  1004004   0  33  0  2556488  29040 ...
Wow!  A priority of 33!
Don't know how that happened, but the way to fix that (I thought) is with renice.
But renice doesn't work.
After a lot of playing with renice and ps, it looks as though renice can not make the priority better than (no less than) 15.
And the parameter you put in, that according to the man page that is supposed to be priority, turns out to be "nice index", with priority changed by sometimes subtracting or sometimes adding either this number or twice this number - down to a limit of priority no less than 15.

This is with OSX 10.7.5 and Terminal 2.2.3 on an early 2009 Mac Pro with lots of memory.
What am I dong wrong, and any suggestions for how to fix my Time Machine process?

The backup file size is 1.67 TB.*
That's across the internal bus of a 2009 quad-core Mac Pro - which is pretty fast.
Copying an hour's worth of MPEG-2 HD takes about a minute.
I do a fresh backup from scratch about once a year, and the last time it finished over night.
This time the first Time Machine backup is only about 1/5 complete after many days, and Activity Monitor shows essentially no use of disk drives or of CPU. And in the first note I pointed out what is gleaned by using Terminal to execute the UNIX ps command. The priority of the running Time Machine process looks incorrect to me.
I could be wrong, but I think the problem is process priority, not file size.
I am unable to set priority to 0 or a negative number. Can someone straighten me out on how to do that?
[*The machine has four 1.5 TB disk drives in it plus lots of memory. Two of the physical drives are configured as one 3 TB backup drive (RAID concatanated).]

Basic troubleshooting from the User's Guide is reset, restart, restore (first from backup then as new). Try each of these in order until the issue is resolved.

I have a MacBook Pro w 500 GB hard drive less than 10% avail. My iPhoto file is huge, almost all of my space. Apple tech support suggested a 2 GB Time Capsule. I haven't been able to set up iPhotos off of the laptop to work remotely in iphotos. Is this the setup I should be going for or would buying a iMac with 3 GB hard drive be better solution?

I agree with Linc. I suggest you upgrade your internal drive to a 1 TB drive for lots of space and a substantial boost of speed. Managing one internal drive is much easier than managing external storage, especially when you consider the need to backup the data.
New 1 TB hybrid SSD-disk drives deliver high capacity with an 8 GB SSD buffer that performs at SSD-like speeds. Google "Seagate 1 TB hybrid-drive 2.5”.

I have a manual that contains headings and index entries that contain less than and greater than characters, < and >. The Publish to Responsive HTML5 function escapes these correctly in the main body of the text but does not work correctly in either the Contents or the Index of the generated HTML. In the Contents the words are completely missing and in the index entries the '\' characters that are required in the markers remain in the entry but the leading less than symbol and the first character of the word is deleted; hence what should appear as <dataseries> appears as \ataseries\>. I believe this is a FMv12 bug. Has anyone else experienced this? Is the FM team aware and working on a fix. Any suggestions for a workaround?

The Index issue is more complicated since in order to get the < and > into the index requires the entry itself to be escaped. So, in order to index '<x2settings>' you have to key '\<x2settings\>'. Looking at the generated index entry in the .js file we see '<key name=\"\\2settings\\>\">. This is a bit of a mess and produces an index entry of '\2settings\>'. This ought to be '<key name=\"<x2settings>\" >'. I have tested this fix and it works - but the worst of it is that the first character of the index entry has been stripped out. Consequently I cannot fix this with a few global changes - and I have a lot of index entries of this type. I'm looking forward to a response to this since I cannot publish this document in its current state.

• Brand new Zen, less than 1 hour use..crashed and will not b

Purchased on 5th of June 2006, less than hr use and not working!!
SPECS
TYPE - TYPE : Zen Micro Photo
Capacity - 8GB
DATE - DATE June 5th 2006
PRICE - $99
COUNTRY - US (whilst on holiday, I bought 2, one for a US friend and one for me)
ACCESSORIES -None
SOUND QUALITY - decent!
USER INTERFACE - UI is ok
SOME COMMENTS - IT has now crashed with less than hours use, it will not boot up, will not charge via USB,it's brand new.. so no. I hate this player. A player should never have this type of problems with less than hours use!!!
SUGGESTIONS - MAKE A PLAYER THAT WORKS
BATTERY LIFE - THe first time I used it, I had just had my friend transfer her music files onto it after doing the same to her player. I just wanted to make sure that it worked properly this was on the 8th of June
on the 9th I got on a flight and headed to the UK, I did not use the player at all, but I noticed that the battery life had slightly reduced even though the player was off.
On Saturday the 0th I went for a walk to and used the player for no more than 30mins.
Everything seemed fine, I adjusted a few settings like the sensitivity of the touch pad and put the player on shuffle. I got home, shut the player down and fell asleep.
Sunday (today) June th. the player refused to boot when switched on, it just hung on the floating creative Zen micro screen. I shut it down and it took ages for it to shut down even though it didn't fully boot up.
I called my friend in the US and asked her if shher battery was failing she said no, I installed the softtware on my machine, slid the back of my zen, removed the battery and replacd it immediately.
After installing the software, I connected the ZEn to the machine via USB, nothing happened.
It won't charge, the Zen windows explorer doesn't hink anything is connected to the machine.
I am severely disappointed. I spent $400+ buying 2 players with creative, I do not expect a new product to fail so miserably on its first outing.
Where the heck do I go from here...
creative owes me an apology and a decent brand new replacement.
A very very dissappointed buyer indeed!
In summary,
THe player will not boot up
It will not charge
I cannot get it into recovery mode
The screen remains blank
It did not come with a mains charger, just a USB cable to charge via the computer
How can such a shoddy product be released?
I bought this product int he US with my credit card..
I would have to go back to the US in order to get a refund and I would have to do this before 4days are up. which means the deadline for a refund is 9th of June 2006
Would creative be willing to incur my costs and time to fly back to NY in order to return this nightmare of a product!!
