most j2ee patterns are discredited now. they were mostly workarounds for deficiencies in ejb 1 & 2 specs.
"core j2ee patterns" is your best bet, but take it with a grain of salt.

I'm afraid there is no quick way of learning J2EE. Of all the people on this forum only a few have truly mastered the framework. I suggest you learn it step-by-step by following the tutorial. Read the introduction to give you a glimpse of the technology and then, dive in....
The way I learned it was by building a three-tier website based on Servlets, JSP and EJB. After a few days/weeks in hell, I had an overview of the technology. I suggest you do the same.
As for book suggestions : stick to the standards. You (almost) can't go wrong with Wrox or O'Reilly.

Can you suggest a good black and white printer for OS 9?

I'm going to be using OS 9 for a while and was wondering if anyone could suggest a good black and white printer that I can connect to my Lombard laptop running OS 9. New or used doesn't matter to me as long as I can still get some ink cartridges for it. Thanks a ton for the help.

Okidata printers are the only ones I know of that are current models that have Mac OS 9 drivers.

And I think these are laser printers, not inkjets. I don't have personal experience with them.
For older models that you may find used, HP made good printers. For their inkjet printers, HP put the printhead on the ink cartridge, which ensure that key part will not wear out or get clogged on a older printer.
Make sure the model is not too old; you need USB. To check on a specific model, go to hp's support site. Look up the model by it's name or number on this web page.

From the next page, you can see the specs and open a page with a listing of printer drivers. If there is a driver for Mac OS 9, that model would work.
You can do the same type of evaluation with other brands, such as Epson, Canon, etc.

ppl im actually looking for ideas to do a university based java project, but i cant really decide on the topic..so i would be really obliged if any 1 could give me ideas or could provide me some good project titles.

Try writing a java IDE.
You can write it in Java Swing itself (ala IntelliJ, Together etc) and the great thing is it can be as complicated as you like.
the very basics would be a simple text editor that highlights jave keywords.
More complicated is refactoring options, (e.g. rename method) as you have to think of an appropriate structure to store code in so you can check all references.
There are so many IDE's out there, you can analyse them and choose the best feautes to implement.
Your project write up would compare your product to the comemrcial ones.

Your modem is maybe cable.. which is not adsl..
Or adsl which is not fibre..
Or perhaps wireless and not adsl
Or satellite and not wireless.
Or vdsl and not satellite
Or is it direct copper and not vdsl
Or it could be cable.. and we start around again.
A good modem is more than likely supplied by your ISP.. although that is not universal.. some hint of ISP and broadband type is a big step forward.

Please suggest a good free monitoring tools like big brother, hobbit. Only for solaris servers. it should be easy to configure.

For system resource checking,
- prstat
- sar
- iostat
- zpool iostat ( if the filesystem is ZFS )
- mdb ( Memory check)
example) echo ::memstat | mdb -k
I assume all free tools are from the commands above.
