  • Upgrading a 3-node Hyper-V clusters storage for £10k and getting the most bang for our money.

Hi all, looking for some discussion and advice on a few questions I have regarding storage for our next cluster upgrade cycle.
Our current system for a bit of background:
3x Clustered Hyper-V Servers running Server 2008 R2 (72TB Ram, dual cpu etc...)
1x Dell MD3220i iSCSI with dual 1GB connections to each server (24x 146GB 15k SAS drives in RAID 10) - Tier 1 storage
    1x Dell MD1200 Expansion Array with 12x 2TB 7.2K drives in RAID 10 - Tier 2 storage, large vm's, files etc...
~25 VM's running all manner of workloads, SQL, Exchange, WSUS, Linux web servers etc....
1x DPM 2012 SP1 Backup server with its own storage.
    Reasons for upgrading:
Storage though put is becoming an issue as we only get around 125MB/s over the dual 1GB iSCSI connections to each physical server.  (tried everything under the sun to improve bandwidth but I suspect the MD3220i Raid is the bottleneck here.
Backup times for vm's (once every night) is now in the 5-6 hours range.
Storage performance during backups and large file syncronisations (DPM)
Tier 1 storage is running out of capacity and we would like to build in more IOPS for future expansion.
Tier 2 storage is massively underused (6tb of 12tb Raid 10 space)
    Migrating to 10GB server links.
Total budget for the upgrade is in the region of £10k so I have to make sure we get absolutely the most bang for our buck.
    Current Plan:
Upgrade the cluster to Server 2012 R2
Install a dual port 10GB NIC team in each server and virtualize cluster, live migration, vm and management traffic (with QoS of course)
Purchase a new JBOD SAS array and leverage the new Storage Spaces and SSD caching/tiering capabilities.  Use our existing 2TB drives for capacity and purchase sufficient SSD's to replace the 15k SAS disks.
    On to the questions:
Is it supported to use storage spaces directly connected to a Hyper-V cluster?  I have seen that for our setup we are on the verge of requiring a separate SOFS for storage but the extra costs and complexity are out of our reach. (RDMA, extra 10GB NIC's
    etc...)
When using a storage space in a cluster, I have seen various articles suggesting that each csv will be active/passive within the cluster.  Causing redirected IO for all cluster nodes not currently active?
If CSV's are active/passive its suggested that you should have a csv for each node in your cluster?  How in production do you balance vm's accross 3 CSV's without manually moving them to keep 1/3 of load on each csv?  Ideally I would like just
a single CSV active/active for all vm's to sit on.  (ease of management etc...)
If the CSV is active/active am I correct in assuming that DPM will backup vm's without causing any re-directed IO?
Will DPM backups of VM's be incremental in terms of data transferred from the cluster to the backup server?
Thanks in advance for anyone who can be bothered to read through all that and help me out!  I'm sure there are more questions I've forgotten but those will certainly get us started.
Also lastly, does anyone else have a better suggestion for how we should proceed?
    Thanks

    1) You can use direct connection to SAS with a 3-node cluster of course (4-node, 5-node etc). Sure it would be much faster then running with an additional SoFS layer (with SAS fed directly to your Hyper-V cluster nodes all reads and writes would be local
travelling down the SAS fabric and with SoFS layer added you'll have the same amount of I/Os targeting SAS + Ethernet with its huge compared to SAS latency sitting in between a requestor and your data residing on SAS spindles, I/Os overwrapped into SMB-over-TCP-over-IP-over-Etherent
requests at the hypervisor-SoFS layers). Reason why SoFS is recommended - final SoFS-based solution would be cheaper as SAS-only is a pain to scale beyond basic 2-node configs. Instead of getting SAS switches, adding redundant SAS controllers to every hypervisor
node and / or looking for expensive multi-port SAS JBODs you'll have a pair (at least) of SoFS boxes doing a file level proxy in front of a SAS-controlled back end. So you'll compromise performance in favor of cost. See:
    http://davidzi.com/windows-server-2012/hyper-v-and-scale-out-file-cluster-home-lab-design/
Used interconnect diagram within this design would actually scale beyond 2 hosts. But you'll have to get a SAS switch (actually at least two of them for redundancy as you don't want any component to become a single point of failure, don't you?)
    2) With 2012 R2 all I/O from a multiple hypervisor nodes is done thru the storage fabric (in your case that's SAS) and only metadata updates would be done thru the coordinator node and using Ethernet connectivity. Redirected I/O would be used in a two cases
only a) no SAS connectivity from the hypervisor node (but Ethernet one is still present) and b) broken-by-implementation backup software would keep access to CSV using snapshot mechanism for too long. In a nutshell: you'll be fine :) See for references:
    http://www.petri.co.il/redirected-io-windows-server-2012r2-cluster-shared-volumes.htm
    http://www.aidanfinn.com/?p=12844
    3) These are independent things. CSV is not active/passive (see 2) so basically with an interconnection design you'll be using there's virtually no point to having one-CSV-per-hypervisor. There are cases when you'd still probably do this. For example if
you'd have all-flash and combined spindle/flash LUNs and you know for sure you want some VMs to sit on flash and others (no so I/O hungry) to stay within "spinning rust". One more case is many-node cluster. With it multiple nodes basically fight for a single
LUN and a lot of time is wasted for SCSI reservation conflicts resove (ODX has no reservation offload like VAAI has so even if ODX is present its not going to help). Again it's a place where SoFS "helps" as having intermediate proxy level turns block I/O into
file I/O triggering SCSI reservation conflicts for a two SoFS nodes only instead of an evey node in a hypervisor cluster. One more good example is when you'll have a mix of a local I/O (SAS) and Ethernet with a Virtual SAN products. Virtual SAN runs directly
as part of the hypervisor and emulates high performance SAN using cheap DAS. To increase performance it DOES make sense to create a  concept of a "local LUN" (and thus "local CSV") as reads targeting this LUN/CSV would be passed down the local storage
stack instead of hitting the wire (Ethernet) and going to partner hypervisor nodes to fetch the VM data. See:
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/starwind-native-san-on-two-physical-servers
    http://www.starwindsoftware.com/sw-configuring-ha-shared-storage-on-scale-out-file-servers
(feeding basically DAS to Hyper-V and SoFS to avoid expensive SAS JBOD and SAS spindles). The same thing as VMware is doing with their VSAN on vSphere. But again that's NOT your case so it DOES NOT make sense to keep many CSVs with only 3 nodes present or
    SoFS possibly used.
    4) DPM is going to put your cluster in redirected mode for a very short period of time. Microsoft says NEVER. See:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/hh758090.aspx
    Direct and Redirect I/O
Each Hyper-V host has a direct path (direct I/O) to the CSV storage Logical Unit Number (LUN). However, in Windows Server 2008 R2 there are a couple of limitations:
For some actions, including DPM backup, the CSV coordinator takes control of the volume and uses redirected instead of direct I/O. With redirection, storage operations are no longer through a host’s direct SAN connection, but are instead routed
through the CSV coordinator. This has a direct impact on performance.
CSV backup is serialized, so that only one virtual machine on a CSV is backed up at a time.
In Windows Server 2012, these limitations were removed:
    Redirection is no longer used.
CSV backup is now parallel and not serialized.
    5) Yes, VSS and CBT would be used so data would be incremental after first initial "seed" backup. See:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff399619.aspx

  • Is an iPhone app the best choice for our project?

    Dear All,
We are developing a travel tour idea for different locations within the US.  Tour content can include video, audio, images and text, as well as maps and locations.  We want to make our tours "in-depth" so that people can spend good quality time traveling a short distance and exploring "in-depth" rather than travelling long distances and giving only casual interest to what they see.
I'm new to developing apps for the iPhone and am using Dreamweaver CS5.5 soon to be updated to CS6.
I'm wondering if an app for iPhone and other related media like Android is really the way to go because of the limited content and screen size available.  I can envision our tours being utilized in many other formats, including iPad, Interactive PDF, as travel e-books or through an interactive website.  Our goal is to sell our apps, not give our material away for free. PDF would be my preferred format, but I know that PDF is easily transferred for free among users and would probably not give us much profit.
Any thoughts out there on what the best format for our project might be, or should it include ALL of the above formats? App creation for the iPhone is a rather complicated process, so that's why I'm wondering if after all of the work that you have to put in to create an iPhone app, if that is ultimately my best choice.
I would appreciate any thoughts or advice, or any questions you might have.  I'm working on a Mac Pro with CS5.5 Master Collection soon to be updated to CS6

    hi,
It depends on your requirement. Base on my experience, VM or website all could meet your requirement. From your description, You could use azure website to host your php website (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/web-sites-php-configure/).
And you could use website auto scale feature in the future. I suggest you could see their comparison (http://www.windowsazure.com/en-us/documentation/articles/choose-web-site-cloud-service-vm/
    Hope it helps.

  • Suggestions about the best tool for quality check for an ADF application

    Hi All,
I need a few suggestions about the best tool for quality check in our ADF applicaiton.
ours is a small size WebCenter Portal application which neither uses any task flows nor consumes any portlets.
It has many jspx pages that use ADF components like table etc, consume web services using web service clients, and has some java classes.
We have come across below option to implement the code quality tools.
    1. Jdeveloper inbuilt Staus option in View tab
    2. PMD extension for Jdeveloper
    3. Red Samurai
Few more suggestions or best practices would be really helpful.
    Thanks,

Is it possible to use the same Switch for two different clusters.
Yes.  Technically there will not be any conflict as long as the private addresses used by the 2 clusters do not collide, and provided that the switch's port capacity and bandwidth will not be exceeded.
Your NA (netadmin) can also configure the switch to separate the 2 Interconnects from one another (called partitioning when using Infiniband) - if the switch supports such features.
A major consideration is not to make the switch, public. That typically cause a range of problems and can have a serious impact on an Interconnect. But using 2 private networks on the same infrastructure should not have the same problems - if configured and implemented correctly.

  • Is Business Manager the best tool for our company?

I have a number of quesitons to answer to figure out if Busienss Manager is the best tool for our company. The ONLY reason we are pursuing changing from individual accounts is that Share Screen has been removed from some of our accounts with the latest Skype update.
Can we port existing Skype account names to Business Manager?
    Will Skype contacts be kept?
Is 'Share Screen' part of Business Man.?
Is it east to add and delete user accounts in Business Manager?
    What are the admin issues?
Can more than one person be the administrator? Is it easily transfered?
The Business Manager literature refers to credit allocation, tracking and reporting as a benefit of Business manager. Credit is not a concern for our company as we seldom use Skype to call phones. What are the other benefits of Skype business Manager?
Thank you for your time and help.

Up until a few weeks ago I would certainly reccomend Skype, but my advice is for youy to look for another company.
Skype doesn't care about it's business customers, I and others have been trying to buy credits for week but the system is broken with no fix in sight, I was told it would be fixed by the end of the week, it hasn't been!!
Read for yourself then go look for another phone provider, Skype is not responsive to business customers!

We are using the Azure server for our web services. Server is generating an error "Unable to connect to the remote server". What is this error means

    Hello,
Did you means that you use the Windows Azure Virtual Machine DNS name as the server name in the Reporting Server Web Services URL?
    For example:
    Report server:http://uebi.cloudapp.net/reportserver
    Report manager:http://uebi.cloudapp.net/reports
If you want to connect to Report Manager on the virtual machine from a remote computer, you should create a  virtual machine TCP Endpoint and open the port in the virtual machine’s firewall. By default, the report server listens for HTTP requests
    on port 80.

  • How we can inactive the credit account for our customer

    Hi Gurus,
Can you please let me know, Where we can deactivate the credit account for our customer?
    Thanks in advance
    Mayank Tyagi

    Hi Mayank,
            As per my Understanding.
here you are trying to enter the payer code different as sold to party.
    if its so,
both ur customer-sold to & Payer has credit master records ( check in FD32).
both might have maintained different credit limits.
so when you enter the payer different as customer, based on credit management configuration - systems check for the Payer as well as Sold to's credit records, if both r different then system prompts this error message.
As i know, it wont allow you to proceed further.
this is the reason in many cases your sold to & payer will be same.there could be chance, that your ship to will be different.
my query is: - why you are trying to enter 2 different ( sold to & payer) partners?
any doubts plz let me know.
    hope it clears,

I added photos of our company's products to the Goods App for our sales team to use as an electronic catalog.  Some of the pictures display perfectly.  Others are blury.  How can I fix this? I Googled pixel size for Ipads and checked this size against the blury photos.  They seem to be less than the max pixels allowed.  Must be another solution????

    Ged,
whilst generally I agree with you a question (or two) for clarification so we can be sure we're not comparing apples with oranges
I'm not familiar with O2's product lineup but given you're on Annex M is that a business package?
Are you on an Infinity residential or business package?
On the subject of the offshore support teams my experience from the other sife of the fence is that many, many of them are very technically orientated. The problem is that the ISPs they work for don't give them access to many of the tools that are needed (they need to raise internal requests to even get line checks done in some cases) and also they are very heavily scripted & monitored in what they do/say on a call.
Sounds like O2 are operating as a contact centre rather than as a call centre which is much more preferable from the customers point of view.
DISCLAIMER: although I work in the industry I do not work for BT and any opinions given are purely my own.

  • What is the silent switch for ver 9.x adobe_updater.exe?

I simply want to update all of my 750 PC's to current versions of adobe reader and acrobat.  I have version 9.x of both.  My clients don't have admin rights so I'm hoping that someone at adobe or in practice can pass along the switch to run the updater via the Windows Task Scheduler.  I've seen one example, but I can't get it to work silently.  Also tried /quiet
    "%commonprogramfiles%\adobe\updater6\adobe_updater.exe" -AU_LAUNCH_MODE=1 -AU_DISPLAY_LANG=en_US -AU_LAUNCH_APPID=reader9rdr-en_US
I can run the updater but not silently.
Also hoping that adobe will update their customization wizard to support ver X.  thanks Dennis

Exactly what I want to do, I've about given up on adobe, I've posted the same type ? on their web site 2 months ago and no one from adobe replied.  I've had our software reseller try forwarding the same ? to someone in adobe, if I get anything back I will pass along.  Thanks Dennis
    ===============================================================================
Subject: So the ? of the month is, can we actually find a real person at adobe that can answer some very basic ?'s
I’ve given up on their overseas support and tried posting a ? on their web site (which no one from adobe would answer), that was in the e-mail that Charlotte passed along to you.
Does adobe have a method to provide unattended SILENT updates to their reader/acrobat.  i.e. they have a method in place if you have admin rights called Acrobat-Reader Update.  So since 90% of my clients don’t have admin rights, my thinking was if they have a silent switch on that update process I could run a weekly job to apply updates.  So far getting anyone to either say yes or no has been futile (normal for adobe).
So to be clear, my goal is to install reader 10.x and acrobat 10.x on all my 750 MIR desktops and I am looking for a way to easily update those PC’s as updates/patches come out from adobe, but I have to do it in a batch job running with admin rights silently.  So can we find anyone from Adobe that can either say yes here is the silent switch or say no the only method is as follows!
After 9.2 the following is installed on desktops:
    cid:[email protected]
The AdobeARM.exe updater works fine, but you have to be logged onto the PC with admin rights, it then downloads the updates, but then you have to again be logged on with admin rights and double click and apply them via the GUI screens.  That would make sense if you had 10 PC’s and each person had admin rights, but that is not at all the corporate world.  I have 2 people maintaining 750 PC’s and very few clients have admin rights, so our focus is how to make these updates happen regularly without having to physically access the PC’s.

? Which one...   Windows XP Pro   ? Microsoft ?

Hmm.. This is entirely my fault.. I understand what macmenno is saying. Thumbs up. Good info. yes indeed quite correct.
But it's like discussing Oranges and the Blue M&M's. They are seperate topics. (subliminally I must be hungry or something...)(And I do appreciate the well thought out response)
For the album "Alles Gute vors uns" by Xaiver Naidoo there is a button marked "Buy Album". So we can assume now that this should be for sale. That would be the intent. It states even... "Buy Album".
Unfortunately.... and technically. this does not seem to be possiable - as one might have been lead to believe.
I think there is a technical "behind the scenes" glitch.
When attempting to purchase said item.... you get
"Purchase of this items is not currently available. This item is being modified. Please try again later."
It has said this for a number of days.
If I can't buy the album, can we remove the button?
I would like to know. If I don't get it here, I will order it elsewhere. It's that simple.
I figure it's a glitch. Hopefully one that can be fixed, and I can move on. If not, then in a few days time I will order it from my favorite local music stores. As I said. Not a big deal. I was just curious. I figure it will be fixed the day after I have received the item... not a fault an Apple.. but as a result of the karma I carry.

If you know how to use struts and portlets, you wouldn't be asking this question. I suggest looking into the Model-View Controller pattern to get an idea how to set up a web application, then think about how to do it in a portlet environment.
