Suggested Enhancement to Perspective Crop

The new Perspective crop tool in Photoshop CS6 Beta is great. I find it very useful for correcting the perspective when I take pictures of my paintings. I try to shoot them the straightest I can, but there is always some distortion so with previous versions I had to crop the image to the rectangle that confined the painting and then select all, transform and pull the corners with CTRL to match the corners of the painting to the corners of the image. Even then, I was not sure the image had the correct aspect ratio since it was made by hand.
Perspective crop makes all this in just one step and calculates the correct aspect ratio but I think It can be enhanced a little more.
Just look at this picture:
I took it in the Subway. The problem here is the poster is attached to a curved surface. Perspective crop is helpful here:
But there is still some distortion after the cropping. I tried all distortion filters and lens correction, but no help since they are oriented to straighten curved walls due to lens distortion, not really curved walls. The only helpful tool was Warp Transform:
It gets the job done, but again, you have to figure out the aspect ratio by eye and the result is not geometrically perfect. Also, due to the curved wall, the image is compressed at the top and bottom where the wall curves to the camera but not at the middle where the wall is more straight.
But, ¿Wouldn't it be great if in the Perspective Crop you could just pull the side handlers (marked as 1 and 2 in the following mock up) of the mesh with CTRL pressed to do something like this?:
Just think of the possibilities! One of the uses of the perspective crop you mention in the previews in Youtube is to obtain textures for a 3D object. Well, this is good when the texture is from a flat surface but what about cylindrical or spherical surfaces? you could photograph them and extract textures ready to apply to cylindrical or spherical 3D objects!

Just in case you hadn't realised , the perspective crop tool is available in CS5.  It's just not so obvious.
In CS5 draw out a crop box - and then look at the options bar. You'll see a checkbox labeled 'persective crop'. Tick it and you'll be able to pull the corners independently.
I like your idea for the extraction on curved surfaces. I've had to do the same work myself in the past - perspective cropping images for 3D textures.
I think with the new technologies for adaptive wide angle, lens correction etc, your idea might well be possible.

  • Why is there distortion in Perspective Crop?

Here are two crops of a banal subject, our dryer and its circular control knob.  Both done the same way, but look at the difference.  First result, with size 1876x1419, which is reduced  for this post, is obviously a distortion:
I wasn't surprised or upset to see this distorition, since I'd seen it many times before.  It's easy enough to remedy: just Perspective Crop again.  This time the image was 1871x1000, which is much better:
Photoshop, we have a problem!  Why can't this be corrected?

I'm not sure whether that curvature distortion discussed in the other thread bears on why the perspective crop often leaves an image with a distorted H to W ratio.
One thing's clear:  There's unknown magic at work.
Adobe knows about the problem in the other thread, I've made sure.

  • Photoshop perspective crop tool  not working

I have photoshop CS6 and used to use the perspective crop too all the time, and it worked just fine. Occasionally I would get weird results but if I just redid it, it would work properly.
lately, it give weird results ALL THE TIME. My only workaround has been to take the result into genuine fractals and redo the image dimensions. The best way to describe what is happening is that while applying the correction, the program inverts the image dimensions so that a horizontal image becomes a vertical image, all squished from side to side and elongated from top to bottom.
Is there a way to 'reset' the tool, or uninstall the tool and reinstall it? Or some way to correct this problem?  I don't want to have to reinstall the entire program because of all the plugins and custom stuff I have.

Yes, there is. Go to the Options bar, right-click on its' icon. Select "Reset Tool"

  • Crop tool/perspective crop difficulties...

I've been using CS6 for a little while, and like many others (and UNLIKE many), I'm not happy with the changes to the crop tool...  I found a number of discussions about the crop tool, but none appeared to address my simple difficulties...
In past versions I created presets - for example, 1024x768x72ppi or 14 in x 11 in x 240 ppi.  I could very quickly apply a preset, and if my image was vertical instead of horizontal, I simply clicked the arrows between horizontal and vertical dimensions to switch the dimensions.  This capability appears to be gone from the CS6 crop tool.  How do I switch the dimensions in CS6?
And, no, the perspective crop tool isn't an adequate replacement.  I can't find ANY way to do presets in that tool.  Nor do I seem to be able to find a setting to show the "rule of thirds" on the perspective crop.
Was this thing changed just for the sake of change, or is there some SIGNIFICANT improvement somewhere in the tool that's not intuitively obvious to the uninformed observer?

OK, I AM the dumbest human ever!  I could SWEAR I tried every button and switch and whatever on the crop tool.  But, it does indeed work as you said......
Now I have a DIFFERENT problem....  I"ve gotta relearn how to crop to a size since it appears that selecting the 8.5x11 for example, does NOT give me an image size of 11 inches times the default resolution...  Another thing that's been consistent for X versions that I'll have to relearn...  Are you guys SURE the Adobe people didn't just change the way a bunch of this stuff works for giggles?

  • Crop tool prior to CS6 vs perspective crop tool

In the old days, one could just use the crop tool and, while drawing crop lines, check the perspective box if you found that you needed to change the perspective. With CS6 if you start with the crop tool, and find you want to change the perspective, you have to change tools to the new perspective crop tool. In the process, you have to tell the newly opened dialog box that you don't want to crop, to get to the perspective tool, which now has reset to its defaults. You've lost your cropping and you have to start over.
Is this the correct behavior, or am I missing something?
    Thanks . . .

And as far as I can tell, even if you set the perspective crop tool to constaints, like 8x10", those constraints are totally ignored, even if you use the shift key. All of these features did work with the old crop tool.  And if you wanted to change the perspective, all you had to do was click a button. It seems like we have taken one step forward, and two steps back.
The W and H are not intended to be constraints on the source aspect ratio. They are for optionally specifying the destination dimensions.
Perspective Crop Tool is a specialised tool that the designers never will have intended to be used as an alternative to a non-distorting cropping tool.
The user is expected to be sourcing a non-rectangular quadrilateral that's to be distorted into a rectangle, so there is no reason for the tool to feature an aspect ratio constraint for the source region.
I'm not saying that you shouldn't have the option of the CS5-style crop tools in CS6. I am only saying that I can understand why the new PCT doesn't have the same features as a regular crop tool.

  • Does photoshop touch for iPad have a perspective crop like cs5?

I use the crop tool with perspective box checked on my desktop, would like to use it on my iPad.

Another option would be the Warp option under the Amperstand "&" menu. You would want to move the outer frame handles out from the vertical center. It it's not possible to link them, so you would need to move each side individually and crop as an additional step afterwards.
probably would need to move the top right frame handle out event a little more here

  • "Perspective" cropping not working properly

This has been an issue of mine for serveral years and I'm finally writing about it:
Clicking the Perspective box under the Crop Tool, from time to time results in an image with the wrong aspect ratio (weirdly dimensioned image).
Here are the steps, but it only happens 1 of 4 times, I'd say:
I start a crop. Then I check the Perspective box. Then, I continue to carefully refine the crop by grabbing the corners and the sides to get within the black edges of the scanned film. When I'm finished, I double left click on the image and sometimes the image turns out weirdly shaped with an odd aspect ratio.
I cannot figure out how to reproduce the problem consistently because it happens once out of four times and I believe that I'm doing everything the same each time. This is why I haven't talked about it before, but it is a problem and it has been in all CS versions of PS.
This problem happened again and I finally had enough. It started out as 6794x9129 pixels and cropped correctly in a 2nd attempt to 6504x8767. Bit, on the first try, it made the image much more square.
    Thanks,
         Mike

I initially thought as you do, but in the course of this thread I have become convinced it's a real bug, because the results are RADICALLY different from run to run.
It sounds like you may be moving the corner points in only one dimension, which I have already said does not trigger the bug.  Or you just haven't tried hard enough to see it happen yet.
On further testing, it seems perhaps it is simply intermittent.  I cannot find steps to reproduce the problem reliably, but it can be reproduced.
This has been seen to cause it at least sometimes:
    1.  Open my 500 x 333 pixel "woman with dog" image above.  Probably any image will do.
    2.  View - Show - Pixel Grid.
    3.  View - uncheck Snap.
    4.  Surround the entire image with the Crop tool.
    5.  Zoom way in (Ctrl +) to 3200%.
    6.  Move the upper-left corner point 1 pixel down and right, to position (1,1)
    7.  Move the upper-right corner a little more than 1 pixel down and 4 pixels left, to position (496, 1).
    8.  Complete the crop.  If the problem occurs, the image is now vertically stretched, to something like 500 x 438 pixels.
And yes, I'm imagining this correctly as a crop operation because...  It's part of the CROP TOOL!
Here's an algorithm that will ALWAYS work:
    1.  Determine the final image size by the positioning of the outer bounds of the corner points.  Furthest right - furthest left is your width, furthest down - furthest up is your height.  Your image rectangle is then (0, width), (0, height).
    2.  Resample the image to fit into that rectangle.
This is a bug that's been in Photoshop forever, and I've always just worked around it when it happens.  But that doesn't make it less of a bug.  I cannot believe that anyone would have grown to expect this behavior, because it's intermittent, so fixing it isn't going to make a load of people unhappy.

  • Suggested enhancements for Time Machine

I like Time machine but it has some limitations: mostly that it does not provide any mechanism to control the scope and duration of backups. It also does not provide a way to manage the backups.
I would like to see the following features in a future version:
    1) Provide a way to limit the space or time for backups: I would like a way to tell it to limit the backups it takes to a certain amount of disk space (for example 500GB out of a 1TB drive), or for a certain time only (like just for one month) or for a certain number of versions.
    2) Provide a mechanism to remove old backups in a controlled way (like remove all backups older than one month or just retain the last N versions of all files)
What do you people think ?

  • Why did you omit the perspective check box in the crop tool?

I used the perspective frequently because I have sciolosis & most of my photos are askew. that easy checkbox was very convenient.

Perspective Cropping is now its own tool, right under the Crop Tool in the Tools Bar.

  • Crop tool missing perspective control

The new crop tool handling will take a bit of getting used to but one can always put it into "classic mode" so it handles in a similar way to CS5.
The one thing that is now missing though is the perspective button that i found was a very useful feature of the crop tool, i hope that this can be added back to CS6 as to me this is a step backwards.
Have i missed something and this facility is still there but hiding somewhere?

Hold down the crop tool in the tool bar - you'll find the perspective crop as a sub tool

  • Perspective correction via crop tool.

I have always used the crop tool to correct skewed lines, both vertically and horizontally.  Not sure how to do it in the new Beta Version.

Perspective Crop is now its own tool. It is just under the Crop Tool stack.

  • Questions, Suggestions, Bugs - results from 7-day workshop

Last week we (AMIS that is) finished yet another JHeadstart workshop with one of our customer’s development teams. In this workshop we focused on Struts, BC4J and both JSP and UIX. (so no Toplink this time). By the way: we used JHeadstart 9.0.4.5 in conjunction with JDeveloper 9.0.4.
Over the course of this 7 day workshop we had several discussions, most of these the result of our customer’s ambition to generate all or most of an application they had already developed manually using the Web PL/SQL Toolkit and integrated with Oracle Portal. These discussions resulted in several questions/suggestions/enhancements requests. I list them below to inspire future releases.
    Questions:
    ·     Why does JHeadstart not make use of the UIX-Struts integration (see Chapter 15 of the UIX developer’s Guide)?
    ·     How do you specify which columns/attributes in a Table Layout are sortable?
    Suggestion/Enhancement Requests:
    ·     Offer the possibility to generate Regions “Side by side” instead of always below each other
    ·     Could you provide the same kind of “nested navigation” on persistentAttribute for BC4J as you offer for Toplink, e.g. through the use of Jakarta Commons BeanUtils in DataObjectImpl.getAttribute()?
    ·     Allow Master-Detail with Detail Table-Form layout style and same page is true (at least a recipe, preferably full generation) (I do understand that having multiple Child-table-layouts with Details-buttons on the same Master-page could be an issue due to the conflicting details-events, but surely one can be arranged?)
    ·     Generation of breadcrumbs for JSP
    ·     Allow us to specify for a file upload which attribute will hold the filename; allow us to specify for download which attribute will provide the filename (for the save as dialog in the browser) and possibly the mime-type.
    ·     Allow an Alt-text property to be defined for attributes with Display Type = Image; this alt-text property can refer to another attribute.
    ·     In Jsp: Display Type displayField should generate a <bean:write> instead of a disabled <html:text> field. For domain-based attributes that are normally rendered using a pop-list (Choice), a displayField requires additional logic to display (bean:write) the meaning rather than the value
    ·     Allow the prompt to be empty (if you leave the prompt property empty, the generator will use the attribute name; you can not explictly leave it empy; the workaround is to type a single space for the prompt)
    ·     Provide a way to preview the defaults that the generator will use for properties that are not explicity set OR provide a way to explicitly set those defaults as values on the Entity Object’s attributes
    ·     Allow the Domain and Region-properties to be set through a Combo-box with a list of the available Domains and Regions
    ·     Make the private members in oracle.jheadstart.model.bc4j.handler.DataObjectImpl protected, so that a subclass can access those variables
    ·     Allow us to specify a “split prompt” , for example Weight|kg that would display as Weight …. (field) kg; make the JDG pick up split prompt from Designer and set accordingly in the VO Attribute.
    ·     Allow the definition and generation of separate prompt and hint values for Find, Table and Form-page
    ·     Provide a utility to copy VO Attribute properties between ViewObjects (or even to copy entire ViewObjects)
    ·     Documentation: provide a JDG Reference “to-from” in addition to “from-to”: it is very convenient when trying to generate an application using the JDG if you can easily find out what you have to do set in Oracle Designer in order to achieve some result in the generated application. For example: how do I generate a Table-Form layoutstyle?
    ·     Provide a shortcut to run the JDG again, with the exact same settings as the previous run; this makes incremental development using the JDG a lot more convenient; having to walk through the entire wizard for every little change in Designer is rather a pain.
    ·     Provide properties in the Group, Lookup and Region elements in the Application Structure File (editor) for recording post-generation changes
    ·     Generate Regions (minus Table Summary items) in Detail Disclosure
    ·     Provide (style)Class property on ViewObject Attributes and generate the styleClass property for UIX elements or a class property for JSPs (if the Struts tags do not cater for a Class property, you can also generate a <SPAN class=””> around the JSP items)
    ·     Provide a shortDesc or altText property for VO Attributes; these are turned into popup texts on items and can for example provide popup hints in a Table Layout; generate the UIX shortDesc property.
    ·     Provide preComment and postComment properties on VO Attributes, Groups and Regions; the values of these properties should be generated into the UIX or JSP pages as <!-- preComment value --> and <!-- postComment value -->. Not only does this allow better documentation of the generated sources, it also provides hooks for post-generation utilities.
    ·     Support displayType numberField/numberItem; this in UIX would render a right-aligned input-item
    ·     Allow specification of dateFormat at VO Attribute level (in addition to Service Element)
    ·     Switch to JSTL from the Struts tags – at least for bean:write (c:out) and all logic tags; configure new JHeadstart projects for JSTL (libraries, taglibs, web.xml etc.)
    ·     Allow multiple values to be returned from a List of Values
    ·     Allow an onBlur property on VO Attributes; this property includes a piece of JavaScript to be executed on leaving the item; the code may refer to other items in the same record. Ideally also provide other event-triggers such as onFocus, onMouseOver etc.
Bugs?? We ran into some issues that may indicate bugs
    ·     The Master-context in UIX pages for Detail Group, Table-Form (same page false) is missing
    ·     Master context in JSP voor Detail Group, Form page (same page false) is missing
Watch this Topic      Copyright 2004, Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved. About OTN I Contact Us I About Oracle I Legal Notices and Terms of Use I ·     A ViewObject Attribute with displayType File Upload seems to result in a html:file element that pastes the contents of the file into the HTML Page: <input type="file" name="PublisherLogo" maxlength="100" size="30" value="ÿØÿà JFIF H H ÿÛ C ? $.&#39; &quot;,# (7),01444&#39;9=82&lt;.342ÿÛ C etc It would seem that the value attribute of the <html:file> element should explicitly be set to an empty string
    ·     (I am not absolutely certain that this is really the case, but we have seen this behavior several times) The JDG seems to generate a faulty BC4J Design for JDeveloper 9.0.4: when running the JDG for the second time for a Module, a second, similar ViewLink is created where the JDG should overwrite a previously created one. In the BC4J Tester we could still see the data, but in the generated application, we could not find the children of the masters through this duplicated ViewLink. Removing the second viewlink did not solve the problem. Creating the ViewObjects and ViewLinks from scratch in Jdeveloper (i.e. not through the JDG) worked fine.

In the meantime, I can answer to your questions:
    · Why does JHeadstart not make use of the UIX-Struts integration (see Chapter 15 of the UIX developer’s Guide)? This has been done to allow the same page to be run both with Struts and MVC Framework, without needing to change the page. Using the UIX-Struts integration would have made the pages 'controller aware'.
    · How do you specify which columns/attributes in a Table Layout are sortable? As far as generation is concerned, you can only specify the whole table to be sortable. In case of UIX you can post-gen modify the <sortableHeader> tag of each column separately. In case of JSP you can remove the <a href> tag for each column that you do not want to sort on.
