Suggested real player media types?

Hi,
I wanted to watch a video from BBC that apparently needs Real Player. I'm at the set up page for selecting Media types. I'm wondering if the types I check mean the types that RP is "able" to play, or will they make RP "the default" player? I don't really want to use RP for anything else, I usually use VLC or Quick Time if something opens automatically in it. I'm just wondering if I should only check Real-Time Streaming Protocol and nothing else? Or is there a way to get the BBC stuff to open in VLC instead of downloading RP, which for some reason I'm feeling a bit paranoid about. Any input, warnings, or advice about installing this, not installing it, or options to check/uncheck would be appreciated.
Thanks

I would suggest not allowing the Agent to load automatically. It shouldn't download anything Real Player isn't set up to handle (and probably wouldn't hurt anything even if it were), but it's probably just going to get in the way. If at some point you find that you do need/want it to be running automatically, you can launch Real Player, open Real Player Downloader (under the Window menu) and from RP Downloader's preference you can set RP Downloader Agent to launch automatically on login.

Will there be/Is there a download of any of the above mentioned programs for the iPhone?

Apple hasnt made any official announcements. There are a lot of rumors floating around the internet. You can Google for "iPhone updates" or "iPhone rumors" and entertain yourself for a couple of hours reading some interesting (and some ridiculous) stuff.
With the iPod function being the primary media player on the iPhone, I seriously doubt there is room for any other media player. And until Apple makes an announcement, we have very little (if anything) to go on.

Real Player -> Preferences -> Media Types
If you need further information, you should go to Real's support site. They'll be best suited to support their product.

  • Unsupported document type on real player

I am trying to listen to audio downloaded from an online class website. The Real player worked once, but now I am getting an error message that says "unsupported document type." I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling, playing from Quicktime, and the files won't play. Any suggestions? Help please and thank you!

    Hi biocanuck -
I haven't had the need to handle 'realplayer' media from Safari as of yet (only a month into this Macbook) - I went to your french site and had the same problem as you.
I then went ot this link and downloaded RealPlayer...
    https://order.real.com/pt/order.html?ppath=cpmacpl060204a&country=US&language=EN &opage=realhome&src=021705realhome1_1_2_1_83
It automatically installed the plugin for me - I then quit Real Player and launched Safari and went to your site - and voila! It works fine.

  • How do you burn videos taken with myIphone and stored on my computer to a DVD disc.  I purchased and tried using RealPlayer Plus 16 but got error message saying "unsopported media type"?  I alos tried using Real Players file converter with no success!

How do you burn videos taken with my Iphone 4S and stored on my computer to a DVD disc.  I purchased and tried using RealPlayer Plus 16 but got error message saying "unsopported media type"?  I also tried using Real Players file converter with no success!  Thanks in advance for any help you can give!

Probably the OP is no longer paying attention to this unless the OP is subscribed to this discussion.  While not really an iPhone question I guess using an iPhone to produce the movie which then needs taking to the next step makes this as good a starting place as any unless you happen to know enough about what to do to determine in which forum to post.  A suggestion in that direction would help.
Anyway, Apple is backing off from supporting optical media.  It also depends upon what you mean by "DVD".  A DVD is just an optical disc which can support different file formats, but many people think it means a movie disc you can put in your TV.  Producing a movie disc requires special iDVD authoring software Apple used to sell but stopped several years ago.  I don't know if the old versions work under newer systems.  There's also the free Burn application which authors DVDs but takes a bit of learning and has nowhere near the features of iDVD.
If the OP means simply burning the transferred movie files to a DVD for archiving in computer format you don't need special software for that; its built into the operating system File > New Burn folder etc.

  • Cannot Play .DAT Movie Files in Real Player/Java Media Player

    Hi,
I wanted to play some movie files in Solaris 10 (Was curious if the movie might be rendered more crisply in Solaris than Windows :) ) but found that .DAT files are not played in Java Media Player.
So I downloaded the Real Player for Solaris 10 x86 (The bin file which is a self executable installer). Now Real Player plays mp3 songs without a problem, just like Java Media Player, but it does not play any movies with a .DAT extension.
I thought may be I need to download a small patch and hence googled a bit, but could not find anything. So googled again to find if there was some work around, but could not come up with anything.
Has someone faced a similar problem? If anyone could help me with this, I would be really thankful.
P.S: I have boasted to my friends how good Solaris 10 is and if I get the .DAT movies working in Solaris 10, they will surely think of getting it installed on their comps cause it pretty much does everything else !!

That application is in the Applications -> Utilities Folder.
Change the popup menu under "Properties for" to Apple logo Built-in Output. And change the Source to Internal Speakers, and format to 44100.0 Hz with the downward pointing triangle next to the Hz rating.

I was having problems with the Real Player Video downloader, and saw the fix posted here in the forums, but all the threads are now closed. So, I was wondering...is there a consequence to making the alteration in the fix? What happens now? Does the browser have a different set of problems? Here is the fix we were advised to apply:

"type about:config in the address bar

RealPlayer is ok as well as Flip4Mac which is the Mac equivalent to Win Media Player.

  • Plugins for WIndows Media, Real Player, Flash, etc.

I've been having this problem for a while and am finally looking to do something about it. I' pretty sure that I have Windows Media Player, Real Player, and Flash Player installed on my Mac, but Safari never seems able to use them when certain webpages require them for media content. Sometimes I get a message from Safari asking if it should try Windows Media player, and then it plays fine. But If I have the plugins, shouldn't all internet media just play? What do I need to do so that each player will be used when needed?

Schmactor, each player has it's own preferences to set. Open each, one at a time and access the preferences from the "player" menu. If the "Windows Media Plugin" version 9.0 is not in Mac OS X disk/Library/Internet Plug-Ins then it isn't installed correctly because Safari will list all the plugins that are in that folder.

  • Real Player or Windows Media Player for iPhone

Does anyone know if it is possible to download an application which will allow me to play Real Player or Windows Media Player files from Safari on the iPhone?

Until the 2.0 software is released, it's not possible to download an application to your iPhone at all. Once the new software is out, it might be possible, but it will be up to Real, Microsoft or a third-party to develop such a player. I think the likelihood that Real or Microsoft will pony up to be very low. Whether someone else will, we'll have to wait and see.

  • Windows Media Player or Real Player?

I've just recently switched over to Mac, though I'm still using my PC as well, so discrepancies between the two are gently rolling in the more I used my Macbook.
Ok. I visit the Amazon page, and I want to sample some songs from an album I'm interested in buying. My choices to listen are: Windows Media Player or Real Player. Is there nothing on a Mac that will substitute for one of these. I know Quicktime is a Mac product, but it is not always an option.
So, must I download either WMP or RP to listen to such clips? And, if so, which one?

Is there nothing on a Mac that will substitute for one of these.
There isn't for Real Player, no, since that format is proprietary to Real. For Windows Media content, install the Flip4Mac components.
BTW, for future questions about your Mac, you'll get the fastest and most accurate responses if you ask in the Mac forums (QuickTime for Mac OS, in this case).
    Regards.
