Suggested workaround for MOD files in PPCS3

I recognise that CS3 does not support MOD files for editing, and I understand that editing MPEG files is not ideal, however I just thought I'd post my process in case it helps anyone else in the "no-win" situation that I found myself in earlier this year. We trialled a bunch of options and settled on this one, based on speed and ease for a large number of students with varying skill levels:
1) Copy your MOD files off the camera to an intermediate location on your machine
2) Use the free file converter SUPER to transcode the MOD's to MPEG-II (with MP2 sound), taking the opportunity to correct aspect ratio (16:9) and set the highest bitrate available
3) Import resulting MPG files into Premiere and carry on (archive the MOD's)
The reason that this seems to work fairly well for us is the speed of the transcode. As I understand it, only the sound is being transcoded during the process (the video is already MPEG-II), therefore even large files take only 10-15 seconds.
The quality of the finished file seems to be OK (for an MPEG), and I've encountered no sound-sync issues (which is what usually trips me up when testing transcoding).
I hope this helps someone, and I do stress this is just a "no other option" solution. It's by no means "best practice".

Dear Matthew,
Thanks a lot for your reply!
First I want to note that I came across the - rename to .m2v - trick, and that seems to work really fine - no need to convert whatsoever, have you tried that and if so - what are the drawbacks?
The trick : rename 'untitled-1.MOD' to 'untitled-1.m2v' so premiere can import it without trouble.
Further I downloaded Super v2009.build.36 (june 10, 2009) from this site:
http://www.erightsoft.com/
But it somehow doesn't not recognize .MOD files.
Do I need to have some other software installed or am I missing something else?
I will try to use the 'rename the .MOD file to m2v'-method, before that I did this:
Convert the .MOD's with mpeg-streamclip (.com)
For the AC3 audio handling in premiere CS3 I use this trick:
'Why is there no audio in my imported MPEG file?
If your MPEG file contains AC3 (Dolby Digital) audio then Mitch411 said:
If you've got Encore CS3 installed , copy the file ad2ac3dec.dll from the
Encore CS3 directory and paste it into the PPro CS3 root directory. Once
you restart CS3, you'll be able to import the file with the audio. This
means if you've already have a project with the files imported, you'll
need to remove the files from the project and then re-import them, or just
start over with a new project.'
kind regards,

  • Project setting for MOD files

    Does any one know the best project settings for MOD files?

    They have to be converted. Probably best with MPEG Streamclip.

  • High quality format conversion for .mod files?

    I'm using MPEG Streamclip to convert .mod files to formats acceptable to FCE 3.0. I've tried a few dozen possibilities, but the files are either unreasonably huge (687 MB for 23 seconds of video) or of poor quality. Does anyone know of a high quality format that requires something on the order of 3.6 MB/min? A previous post (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=4815749&#4815749) recommends DV or HDV, but MPEG Streamclip gives many options for DV. Any help would be much appreciated.

    They come from a Panasonic SDR-H200. The .mod clip in MPEG Streamclip looks great. Here's the information MPEG Streamclip gives for the clip:
    Type: MPEG program stream
    Duration: 0:00:23
    Data Size: 12.48 MB
    Bit Rate: 4.45 Mbps
    Video Tracks:
    224 MPEG-2, 704 × 480, 4:3, 29.97 fps, 9.54 Mbps, upper field first
    Audio Tracks:
    128 AC3 2/0, 48 kHz, 256 kbps
    Stream Files:
    MOV001.MOD (12.48 MB)

  • Suggested workaround for list itemrenderer bug?

    Can someone point me in the right direction for a workaround for the problem described as Flex bug 28191:
    https://bugs.adobe.com/jira/browse/SDK-28191
    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Populate a Tree/List with data and provide a custom itemRenderer class factory.
    2. Change the class factory and dataProvider at the same time.
    3. List.createItemRenderer() will crash during since Factory is the key and it has been changed.
                    delete freeItemRenderersByFactory[factory][renderer];
    Actual Results:
    Crash because the renderer can not be found since it does not exist on that factory dictionary since the class factory was changed and the lookup is using the new factory.
    Expected Results:
    Not crash.
    Seems like a race condition, as sometimes during this process it skips that block of code but in other cases it falls into this block and fails.
    I need to change the data provider and item renderer of a tree control at runtime. Is there one or more methods I should run to prevent this? As the bug notes state, this is an intermittent problem. The error occurs here:
    if (factory == itemRenderer)
                if (freeItemRenderers && freeItemRenderers.length)
                    renderer = freeItemRenderers.pop();
                    delete freeItemRenderersByFactory[factory][renderer];

    Thanks. Actually, I have been updating (not setting or changing) the tree's dataprovider, and then changing the classFactory like this:
    processesXML = event.result as XML;
    nodeTreeData.source = processesXML.children();
    if (treeMultiSelect)
    nodeTree.itemRenderer=new ClassFactory(renderers.TreeItemRendererV1);
    nodeTree.allowMultipleSelection = true;
    nodeTree.setStyle("selectionColor", "0xFFFFFF");
    nodeTree.setStyle("disclosureOpenIcon", MinusIcon);
    nodeTree.setStyle("disclosureClosedIcon", PlusIcon);
    else
    nodeTree.itemRenderer=new ClassFactory(mx.controls.treeClasses.TreeItemRenderer);
    nodeTree.allowMultipleSelection = false;
    nodeTree.setStyle("selectionColor", "0x7FCEFF");
    nodeTree.setStyle("disclosureOpenIcon", OpenArrowIcon);
    nodeTree.setStyle("disclosureClosedIcon", ClosedArrowIcon);
    I had tried using validateNow after changing the ClassFactory before but did get the error again. I will try it again but update the data provider after. Since it's an intermittent error I'm finding it hard to know if a fix is really working.

  • Supported or suggested workaround for Flash?

    Yes. I said the bad word. Take a breath, read on. :-)
    I
    Flash & iOS dont play well together. Neither do Flash & Linux. That's life. So in PC life your browser picks up and does the flash thing via add ons, extensions, etc. Thanks to the forum I've found a bit of that in the app store. Yet to test them, but probably will.  Although I am having trouble finding the apps, I know they are out there. I'll keep trolling the forum to figure that out.
    Question I have is, has there been an officially or even unofficial official recommendation on how to view videos (non uTube) on websites/pages that look for Flash?
    Why i'm asking:
    1) Currently I have one to few on how to use a new specialty foot on my sewing machine. Yes I could go into the other room, fire up the old desktop, choose windows or Linux, boot up, find the web page, watch the video, go back to machine try to imitate what I remember seeing, go back to PC, rewatch the video, repeat process until I get it right. If I could watch on the iPad I could watch and do step by step the first time through. I have no interest in games on my iPad at this point.
    2) I was non-Apple for about 10 months before getting my iPad, prior to that the word was an Apple alternative or an iOS Flash was in the works. The second is definitely not happening. I get the feeling the first isn't either. I'm getting more the no comment, avoid the issue until they (adobe) go feet up then we'll be ready to expand further. Often in my experience Apple will have a background policy that does try to meet the customer's needs when using such public policies.  So I thought I'd ask.

    I see iSwiffer and Puffin - two browsers - recommended a lot.

  • *.mod file converter

    I am curious if anyone has found either a free or a good converter for *.mod files for Mac. It'd be even better if it was both good and free!!
    Thanks for the help!!

    Can you suggest a way of converting Panasonic .MOD files to .MPEG2?
    Streamclip can NOT do it.
    I have a whole bunch of SD cards loaded up with .MOD files.
    I tried to buy a file converter from a company called "iorgsoft" but the software they sent me was for ripping DVDs, something I am not interested in.   No amount of contacting those people will result in them sending me software to do what they promised it could do.   They got my money - - - $58 dollars - - - and all I got from them was junk that doesn't work.   That's at least one company I will never do business with again.

  • Premiere Pro CC does not open MOD files correctly

    Hi,
    I just started using the Adobe Creative Cloud as a trial, in particular the Premiere Pro CC software, since it might be relevant, I am working on a mac (completely updated as of yesterday).
    I have a JVC GZ-MG505 camcorder. This device saves the video files on an internal HDD in a file format called MOD. From what I have been able to see when searching on the web, this should be nothing more than a MPEG-2 file.
    So, I tried importing some video files into Premiere Pro and to my surprise, I noticed that a whole strip on the right hand side of the image is missing. The original is recorded in a widescreen (16:9) format with 720x576 pixels and Premiere Pro gives me a file with 540x576 pixels. I have tried using the Interpret Footage to change this, but it doesn't let me change the number of pixels. I also tried opening the files in Adobe Media Encoder and I have exactly the same results as in Premiere Pro. However, opening the files in VLC or mPlayer they come out exactly as expected with all the pixels there. Has anyone come accross this problem before or can anyone help me with solving this?
    I could try reencoding the files with VLC, but the output file is much smaller than the input file, so I am afraid I am loosing some definition.
    So, just to restate my problem, the adobe products open my MOD files without complaining, but for some reason they loose a strip 180 pixels wide on the right hand side of the image.
    Cheers

    That is correct: there is a bug in CC. In CS6 they work correctly.

  • Mpeg2 playback component for OS 10.3.9. or converting mod files

    Hi,
    I want to convert mod video files so that I can work with them on the mac. Someone suggestes using mpeg streamclip (which I have, version 1.9.2) and mpeg2 playback component (I have version 6.0.2.)
    Unfortunetly, when opening the mod file streamclip asks me to update my mpeg2 playback component. Here comes the problem:
    The current Apple MPEG2 PlayBack component seems to be only available for OS Tiger (10.4.9. and higher). I am using OS 10.3.9. and QT Pro 7.1. and I would very much prefer to stay with this setting.
    1) Does anyone know where I could get an older version of the mpeg2 playback component?
    2) Or, is there an alternative way, instead of using the mpeg2 playback with quicktime to convert the videos into something iMovie (I have iM 4) or another programm can work with?
    I found this website, would that be of any help? http://www.modconverterformac.net/
    3) Which other program (thirdparty) besides iMovie could I use to cut and view the videos on the mac? I have Final Cut Pro, but it is too complicated for me.
    Thank you very much,

  • IVerio for converting MOD files??

    Hi,
    I have been looking through this forum up and down for decent suggestions regarding MOD files from a newly purchased JVC Everio camcorder. I am using iMovie6 and MOD files will not work the conventional way like miniDV etc. Should've bought a DV camera but too late now!
    The problem I see is that while there are many programs that will convert MOD files for use in iMovie 6, it seems the quality of the finished video clip is not very good. I have searched and found a program called iVerio. I have tested it (free trial) and it seems pretty good - quality not lost too much, although some of the feedback from some users leave me with a doubt of how good it really is? Before parting with $60 (AUST) I would be interested if anyone has used this program and how they found the results?
    All in all, my real problem is finding a good program to convert and use MOD file for iMovie 6 without losing the video quality. Is there a newer version of iMovie that recognizes MOD files? This would be the perfect way - saving all the converting etc.
    Thanks in advance
    John

    thanks but i have checked out my camera model with imovie 8 and 9 and it's not named, so it may not be compatible. although if the mod files on on the computer, will they just be able to import to imovie? instead of going from the camera to imovie direct.
    also the program choices are fine to convert files i have now but the quality seems to affect the movies, iverio seems ok just wanted to know if anyone else has used this or a similar program that won;t affect this quality.
    thanks
    John

  • Convert mod files to mov for imovie

    A helpful person on the forum suggested I use mod converter to convert mod files to mov for imovie. I have purchased the program from the internet but am having trouble getting them to respond with registration number so as I can get started. Has anyone had this problem or do you know the telephone number for emisoft which is who I purchased it from.

    wuppet, it is unfortunate that this method did not work for you... I have tested this method my self with iMovie 08 & 09 with JVC .mod files.
    I can really only suggest a few things:
    1. Make sure that you are changing the .mod extension to .mpg, as I am sure that you did.
    2. Attempt to get the originals from the camera, if they're still on the camera. I know that you say that they're the wrong format but iMovie 08 and 08 both support the .mod files found in JVC hybrid cameras. But make sure that iMovie is opened and running before you attach the camera to the Mac. Also make sure that the camera is set to "playback on PC" once you plug it in.
    3. You can download the free VLC app, this will allow you to view the movies to verify that they're not corrupt somehow. You'll be required to change the extension to .mpg or .mpeg for this app to read the movies.

    I have 3 older ext. hard drives that I've utilized many times. Today while searching for old files, one of the three is no longer recognized by my PowerMac. The drive is not listed in Disk Utility.  Any suggestions?

    Is the computer in you equipment line:
    Dual Core Intel Xenon
    (which is not a PowerMac but a Mac Pro) the one you are asking about, or do you have an older PowerMac?
    If a Mac Pro, their forums are here:
    Mac Pro
    and, as Mac Pros have a totally different architecture from the pre-2005 Macs this forum covers, you may not have the same issues that can affect the older models. If someone didn't notice your equipment line, you could get advice that doesn't apply.
    If you really have a pre-2005 PowerMac, read on.
    If the stubborn external is USB and does not have its own power brick (i.e., it gets power only from the computer's UBS ports--"bus powered"), it may not be getting enough power. As electric motors age, they can demand more power than when new, and the power available on any USB port is limited.
    The typical workabouts to making a computer recognize an aging, bus-powered USB drive are:
    Get a powered USB hub (has its own power brick
    Get a "Y" USB cable: 1 Meter USB 2.0 A to 5 Pin Mini B Cable - Auxiliary USB "Y" Power Design for external hard drives.
    The second gets power from two USB ports on the computer and often that's enough.
    Remember that the USB ports on your keyboard seldom provide enough power even for a thumb drive, so be sure to use the USB ports on the back of the computer.
