Suggested Workflow for PC/Mac file transfers?

Hello. I work for a large corporation doing video editing. Currently all my hardware is Windows-based. I have a editing station and a laptop, both running Windows. In the future it's possible that I may switch both my workstation and laptop to Mac .
In the meantime, I occasionally acquire files from other users within the corporation. Some users are on a Mac.
Currently, I have a USB external hard drive that I work directly from. This is formatted to FAT32 so that both Macs and PCs can easily access it. Unfortunately, the 2 GB size limitation keeps causing all sorts of problems with my video editing, so I'm looking for a new solution.
Open to all suggestions, here's what I had in mind:
I have a lot of budget flexibility, so cost isn't much of an issue. I would buy an external hard drive, format it for HFS+ (or whatever the Mac format is), then I'd simply use that as a shuttle drive. To put the files back onto my windows system, I'd use some software to do the file transfer. Anybody know of such software?

Bumping an old topic.
I just realized that incase I get a Mac, it'd be nice to get a software that comes with installation discs for both systems, so I could transfer NTFS -> Mac computer, and HFS+ -> PC computer.
Any ideas? Zero possibility of such software?

  • Workflow for unsupported RAW files

Aperture doesn't recognize RAW images from my Leica D-Lux 2 so I will need to use ACR to convert the files. I'm wondering what other people have set up in terms of workflow for unsupported RAW files. I'm thinking I will have to open in PS, convert, save as TIFF, and then import into Aperture--keeping the original RAW files classified somewhere on my hard drive. Anyone have a better workflow idea?

If you like using ACR this is a great thread for how to do so easily:

I myself am in the same boat (unsupported RAW), what I've been doing is saving 16-bit TIFFS from my RAW editor and importing those into Aperture. I just batch convert first and load them in all at once.
When Linear PNG's are supported that is the option I will favor for import I think (until my camera's RAW format is supported, but I think linear RAW will come first).

  • Is this a sensible workflow for Nikon NEF files?

    Hi,
I'm new to the world of digital SLRs having received a Nikon D40 for Christmas. After comparing Aperture 2 and Lightroom 2, I've decided to go with Aperture, as I already use Logic Pro so like the user interface and (I know a lot of people don't agree) I prefer the way Aperture renders the Nikon NEF files without extra adjustment. I'm also evaluating Capture NX 2, but am undecided as to whether I need it at this point.
Up until now I've been using Nikon Transfer to transfer the photos to my iMac, and View NX to view them. I like the automatic naming of folders in Transfer, plus being able to see Nikon's interpretation of the raw files. I've then been importing the photos as referenced files into Aperture for proper cataloguing, etc.
Is this a good approach? I'm a hobby photographer, mostly landscapes and townscapes, and deal with hundreds rather than thousands of images.
I'm a bit confused by all the options, so any advice would be very welcome!
    Chris

Is this a sensible workflow for Nikon NEF files? YES!
I shoot Nikon NEF files and use Aperure exclusively with occasionally a little blending of layers made from versions of the same raw file (to improve the dynamic range a little more).
You like Nikon Transfer's "automatic nameing of folders" Check out the Subfolders drop down menu in the Import Window in Aperture; you can do that and much more too.
"...plus being able to see Nikon's interpretation of the raw files." You need to choose between the Nikon route and the Aperture route I think. You don't drive from A to B in one brand of car and then go back and do it in another brand of car just in case it might be better do you?!
"I'm a hobby photographer, mostly landscapes and townscapes, and deal with hundreds rather than thousands of images" Can you keyword images and then use them to sort and group images in View NX? You can in Aperture.
From my humble experience as a Nikon owner using Aperture for two years I suggest you use Aperture to download, organise and edit your raws. I prefer referenced so that I can archive large numbers of Raws to free disk space and for protection but still search the previews or do a keyword searches. I used to use Capture NX to process any files that needed more work but now that Aperture2 is so good and has so many plug-ins I have left the slow, clunky Nikon Prog' alone. Be brave and jump in to Aperture. It is great once you are in!

  • Office for the Mac - file open slowness, freeze, or crash

When I select the File - Open window, any of the Office programs take a few minutes to display all of my files in the Documents folder. When they are finally displayed, any attempt to scroll through the list or go to a specific file results in the Mac's spinning wheel being displayed. Quite often, nothing happens after the wheel stops spinning. Sometimes, it just continues to spin. Consequently, it is almost impossible to use the File - Open window in Office to select a file to open. The only way I can do so is to use Finder to display my files in the Documents folder and then selecting them in that program's File - Open window.
When the wheel is spinning, Force Quit says that the specific Office program being used is "not responding." Usually, I use Force Quit to close down the Office program if it has frozen, crashed, or been slow using the File Open window.
I spent an hour yesterday with Microsoft Support on the problem. The conclusion of the tech was that I had too many files in my Documents folder. I pointed out that other programs such as FileMaker Pro didn't have this problem. The tech's response was that Office has to scan the entire Documents folder every time the File Open window is opened, but that FileMaker Pro stores a list of the last files in the Documents folder and doesn't rebuild the list every time.
I am skeptical of this "answer." The problem didn't exist until a few months ago.
My computer is a MacBook Pro 2.3gHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 750GB hard drive which has about 500GB free. This is a fairly fast machine with a Geekspeed of 10688. I was running the latest Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.1. The problem first surfaced with Office for the Mac 2008 about 3-4 months ago running Mac OS 10.10.1. I installed Office 365 yesterday, and and Mac OS Yosemite 10.10.2 today, and nothing changed.
The only solution that I know of is to take a lot of time to segregate my files in the Documents folder into more subfolders (I already have quite a few). That I am loath to do, because the solution doesn't work very well. It takes about a minute to select a subfolder in the File Open window, and then about another 30 seconds before Office allows me to scroll through a relatively small number of files (e.g., 100 files) in the subfolder.
When this question was posted to the Microsoft Community, I was directed to an article talking about problems with Office and Mac OS. None of the solutions worked, probably because the article considered only Office X and Office 2004 for the Mac and OS 10.2 and 10.3.
    Help, please!

    1) Verify that Office is fully updated. v14.4.7
    2) I suggest you run Font Book and vailidate your Fonts. Microsoft installs duplicate fonts and after you clean up your fonts, this has often fixed odd issues with Office.
Office 2011 Duplicate Fonts to Delete
    3) Delete the com.apple.LaunchServices file in your User's Library/Preferences folder. Log out under the Apple in the Menu bar and test. More info
    If this fails to fix....
Testing in a new User will quickly tell you if the problem is system wide or if it's your User's folder that contains the problem.
Put a few test files in the Shared folder. Data in the Shared folder can be accessed by another User. When you "Switch Users", you can access the files in the shared folder. After you log into the new test User, drag from Shared (it actually copies). Put the test files in Documents.
Open Word. It won’t be in the Dock in the new User. Go to Applications to open.
Do you still see the issue?
If yes, you can eliminate the number of files in your Documents folder.
If no, then you might want to do a clean up in Documents.
*Remember to drag files back from Shared when you log into your main User.

  • TechCommSuite suggested workflow for New Documentation

    Hi there,
We plan to buy TechComSuite2 to help with our new product documentation. Previously I have used Robohelp to create .chm files and the like, however now we want to produce several outputs:
    Quick start guide
    Detailed user manual
    Configruation (internal use) documentation
    and video help/training materials
TC2 has FM, Robohelp and adobe air etc.
What would teh suggested workflow be to produce and maintain documentation?
Am I right that it should be authored in FM with proper 'tags' set up so that sections are included/excluded from certain outputs.
RobotHelp manages the database of images/screengrabs and videos etc, and then batch processest he generation of output formats?
or, should it be written in robohelp and outputted from there?
im not sure really where best to start, and the videos and tutorials I have seen seem to be a little bit too focused on how to do things rather than how the workflow should be structured.
    Any suggestions or advise?
    cheers
    peter brown

    thank you. that is helpful.
The images that are in FM - does FM maintain a 'database' of images, so that if an image is used in multiple places in the document and needs to be updated - am I right to say that it is updated in one place only and the change ripples through?
Also, supposing our Quick start guide is a subset of the larger usermanual - are these "tags" (not sure if thats the right terminology) configured in FM so that RH then extracts the correct tags into the corretc output document?
thanks again for help and advice,
    very useful to a noob.

  • BT for PC-PC file transfers (1.1 2.0)?

Would Bluetooth work well to transfer files and sync a MacBook (BT2.0) and an iMac G5 fitted with a D-Link DBT-120 USB Bluetooth adapter (1.1)? Or should I just rely on my old home network for faster transfer rates or reliability?
    Thanks in advance.

OK, I see on Apple's on site that BT is best for only very small file transfers.

  • Best workflow for updating CS3 files to CS5

    Hi everyone,
My company is going to be purchasing CS5 in the next few months. We have been using CS3 (Mac OS 10.5.8).
I've read some threads on here that indicate opening CS3 files or templates directly in CS5 has caused some people some problems.
Since my job involves maintaining the integrity of our many templates, would it be best to recreate them from scratch in CS5 (as I did when we switched from Quark) or is opening them and resaving as CS5 files considered safe?
We have a copy of CS4. Would it be better to open/save in CS4 before opening in CS5?
This transition needs to be as smooth as possible for the art directors and editors even if it means a bit more work for me.
    Thought? Suggestions?
    Thanks!

Hi cj, welcome to the forum.
This advice about starting from scratch is a belt-and-suspenders safety issue for CS5. There are a dozen or so reports floating here from folks whp've had various sorts of problems ranging from very minor to complete loss of an 1100 page book when working with files converted from previous versions. I've not had a problem, nor has anyone I know who is a regular here, but the reports are enough at this point to make me think it isn't necessarily all user error. Being pragmatic, I think it's less work to start a template from scratch than to try to rescue a job gone bad.
And I said don't overwrite an older version file, as in save the new version in the same location with the same name, thus replacing the old one with no opportunity to get it back. Given that ID can only export a file that can be opened by the previous version, nothing earlier, this is just prudent workflow. If you have a disaster, you won't have lost your earlier version, too.
And in general I don't recommend a workflow that uses the same document over and over, doing a save as for each new iteration. If you used PM for that many years I'm sure you know why. Small corruptions have a way of creeping into a document over time as you work. Recycling the document not only carries the unavoidable risk for new coirruption, but also brings any old bad stuff along too. Eventually this can cause complete document failure and we get periodic reports here from (mosstly magzine or newspaper) users who have lost weeks of work when the file can no longer be opened, usually with no apparent reason -- it worked fine all the previous day. Using a template instead means each new iteration starts from the same, hopefully clean, second generation file. ID is very stable, but it does happen. I also keep a spare tire in the trunk of my car, and back up may data every night.

  • Pages Converter (for older Mac files)

    Hi all.
I have a fairly new iMac that I bought last July.  I have been using Macs for years.  When iWork downloaded with Maverics I deleted iWork 09 from my HD.  I now try to open Pages files and they say I need to re-open them with iWork 09 and save them again.  Also I can not open any of the older Claris Works / Apple Works files from my University days.  Loosing alll these files due to an update that is incompatible is unacceptable.  I still have the iWork 09 key form the disks I bought, but like I said, I have a newer iMac so no CD/DVD drive.  Can anyone help?
    Cheers

Pages '08 files need to be opened by Pages '09, or exported to Word .doc/docx files.
Are you sure you don't still have your older versions in your Applications/iWork folder?
LibreOffice (free) will open a lot of oldeer files.
Be warned that Pages 5 is very buggy and shy 100 features.
External CD/DVD/BluRay drives are cheap from eBay, or you can open the DVD on an older Mac and make it a .dmg file in DiskUtility, then install that from a USB stick.

  • Any suggestions (luck) for a Mac/Sonos compatible NAS drive?

Any suggestions (luck?) fpr a Mac/SONOS compatible NAS drive?

I recommend Mac OS 7.6.1 on 68030 Macs. I have a Performa 405 that used to have a Revision B LC II logic board. I ran Mac OS 7.6.1 on that Mac right up until the logic board failed on me. It has since been upgraded to a LC III+ logic board. The Mac Color Classic or Mac Color Classic II are essentially all-in-one versions of the LC II & LC III+. The logic board specs are identical too except that the LC III+ is capable of running at higher resolutions than the Color Classic II due to the built in monitor it uses. You can also run System 6.0.8L if you have the original Color Classic. This is documented in 6.0.8L's Readme file too. Some games like Sierra On-Line's adventure games may run better in System 6 due to compatibility issues related to Mac OS 7.5.X. I know this because several of my adventure games have required patching/tweaking to make them run right (a Pre-Y2K date issue related to Mac OS 7.5.X's clock function).

  • Suggestion needed for processing Big Files in Oracle B2B

    Hi,
We are doing a feasibility study for Using Oracle AS Integration B2B over TIBCO. We are presently using TIBCO for our B2B transactions. Now since my client company planning to Implement Fusion Middleware (Oracle ESB and Oracle BPEL), we are also looking at Oracle AS Integration B2B for B2B transactions (On other words we are planning to replace TIBCO by Oracle Integration B2B if possible).
I am really concern about one thing that is receiving and processing any "BIG FILE" (15 MB of size) from trading partner.
Present Scenario: One of our trading partner is sending Invoice documents in a single file and that file size can grow upto 15 MB of size. In our existing scenario when we receive such big files from trading partner (through TIBCO Business Connect - BC), Tibco BC works fine for 1 or 2 files but it crashes once it received multiple files of such size. What exactly happening is Whatever Memory that TIBCO BC is consuming to receive one such big file, are not getting released after processing and as a result TIBCO BC throws "OUT OF MEMORY" error after processing some files.
    My questions:
         1. How robust the Oracle AS Integration B2B is, in terms of processing such big files?
         2. Is there any upper limit in terms of size that Oracle AS Integration B2B can handle for receiving and processing data?
         3. What is the average time required to receive and process such big file? (Lets say we are talking about 15MB of size).
         4. Is there any documentation availble that talks about any such big files through Oracle B2B?
Please let me know if you need more information.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Workflow for importing AVCHD files

Hi there I know this has been asked before but given that I am struggling with the new purchase of a Panasonic HMC150 (Avchd) vs HDV (tape) I am wondering how others are finding working with the AVCHD footage. Are you importing through Log and Transfer and letting FCP re-compress or are you using other software to convert over to .mov or .mpeg etc? I am a little hesitant of seeing the math that 60 minutes = 60-70 Gb of hard drive space. What do people do for archiving Just keep dumping onto TB drives? Any insight or scenarios would be GREATLY appreciated!

I make disk images of the camera's cards in Disk Utility.
The transcoded footage will be stored for several months at first in its editable format, just in case.
For the project archive I save just the project file and any elements that did not come from the camera, such as graphics or music.
The project can be accurately rebuilt by mounting the disk images and batch capturing once more if need be.
Of course, hard drives have never been cheaper. Depending on how valuable your projects are, you could just keep buying huge 1 or 2 TB drives.

  • Best workflow for Droid .3gp files?

I've been struggling with this for a while. The files from my Motorola Droid are .3gp and supposedly 720x480. If I put those into a 720x480 DV sequence, the video is squished vertically and it takes forever to render. If I use MPEG Streamclip to convert them to DV 720x480, they are squished and the audio is out of sync. What is the best way to get these video files into Final Cut? Any help is appreciated.

    smithfromboston wrote:
This is not a difficult problem. What you should do is convert your 3gp to mov or mp4, then import the converted mov or mp4 file to FCP to edit.
QuickTime .mov is not a codec, it is a container. The video inside can use any one of a number of codecs including those that are unsuitable for editing in FCP.
Mp4 is not a suitable codec for editing in FCP.
See the Easy Setup menu for a list of codecs that work with FCP.
The OP has no need to buy further software to transcode their footage.
They already have QuickTime Player 7 and Compressor, another alternative would be the free MPEG Streamclip. Any of these will do the job.

  • Suggested Workflow for Mail?

A few months ago I switched over from using Opera's mail client to Apple Mail.  I've been happy so far, but one thing bothers me: I have a buildup of messages in my inboxes.
With Opera, new messages would be shown in an "unread" inbox.  The program would distinguish whether you'd viewed a message or not, but messages would remain in the "Unread" box until they were manually marked as read or moved.  Messages marked as read would be removed from the "Unread" box but would exist in the inbox for that account, making it quick and easy to have messages archived and easily retreivable.
Apple Mail lacks an "unread" box.  While on OSX 10.6, I had created a folder called "Read and Stored" and manually moved messages to that folder to clear them from the main mail view.  It seems that the "discussions" feature of Mail in OSX 10.7 requires that all messages be in the same folder/view, however.  I've taken to using the colored flags for further mail sorting, but things feel a lot more cluttered than when I was using Opera.  Does Apple intend for people to just junk up their inbox and never clear out old messages?  How do you handle sorting your mail?  Suggestions and advice please!

You can create your own "unread" inbox by creating a new "smart mailbox" that includes all inboxes where the message has not been read.  This is just a smart search of your inboxes so the mail stays in the inbox but is listed in your new "smart mailbox" until read.
Mail > Mailbox > new smart mailbox > define criteria.
I have several of these for different purposes including mail from Apple support communities.  Makes it easy to review and delete as a group.

  • Compressor workflow for large mov file

I have a 32 GB mov file. Which setting and workflow can I use to put this to a DVD?

Import the file into Compressor, choose the DVD preset that best suits the length of your project (<90 minutes, <120 minutes). The file size is not relevant in creating a standard DVD, program length is. Compressor will make it fit - as long as the program length is less than 120 minutes.
Using Compressor will result in two files, an audio file and a video file. Import those two files into DVD Studio Pro as assets, and in DVDSP you can add menus, etc. You do the disc burn from inside DVDSP.
Other options - use iDVD or Roxio Toast to encode and burn the DVD.
