Suggestion about Sart Menu & Start Screen

If the Start Menu will come back in the new version of Windows (Windows 9?), then I hope the following suggestions become true.
For better and consistent experience when switching between Start Menu & Start Screen, I suggest:
1) Apps Shortcuts in the Start Menu is a List View (*) of Apps Tiles in the Start Screen; Apps Tiles in the Start Screen is a Large Icon View (*) of Apps Shortcuts in the Start Menu.
    * Regarding 'List View' and 'Large Icon View', I just quoted the view name in the Windows Explorer to present my concept, I don't mean to use Large Icon to replace Tile.
2) When user Add/Remove a Apps Shortcut into/from the Start Menu will also Add/Remove same Apps Tile into/from the Start Screen automatically; When user Add/Remove a Apps Tile into/Remove the Start Screen will also Add/Remove same
Apps Shortcut into/from the Start Menu automatically
3) When run a Modern/Metro Apps, it can appear in both Start Screen and Desktop
4) Executable file (e.g. .exe/.bat/.msi/.com, etc.) ONLY can run in the Desktop, and CAN NOT add a Shortcut of Executable file into the Start Screen as a Tile
5) In the Apps list under Start Screen, hide all Executable files (e.g. .exe/.bat/.msi/.com, etc.); In the All Programs under Start Menu, show all Apps and all Executable files
6) The new Start Menu divided into Four sections (from top to bottom):
User (incl. Shutdown, Restart, Logoff options),
 Apps/Program shortcuts,
 All Apps/Program Files,
 Settings
7) Point to the upper-right corner of Start Menu for displaying a upper-right arrow, then click it to enlarge the Start Menu and transform into the Start Screen; Under Start Screen, point to the upper-right of the display screen for displaying
a bottom-left arrow, then click it to bring up the Start Menu and Desktop

For better and more consistent experience...
Consider using a free 3rd party Start Menu replacement called Classic Shell that has provided better and more consistent service since it came out in the time of Vista.
Why bother trying to follow the changing whims of Microsoft at each new version release when you can just have the same top shelf Start Menu functionality from version to version?  Classic Shell has been a better implementation of every flavor
of start menu Microsoft has made (and especially better than not having one at all).
When Windows 9 comes out, you can just choose to ignore whatever Microsoft provides and continue using Classic Shell.  Your usability won't be impaired because you'll already be good at using it, and there is no doubt that it'll
still be a better, more efficient implementation than Microsoft's own.

  • Customize Windows 8 start screen for sysprepped image deployment.

I am attempting to customize the start screen of a windows 8 Pro image for deployment. I have been searching and reading different threads well as technet articles but I have not found anything that works or is not completely documented.
I have tried the three methods outlined in the technet about customizing the start screen with no luck. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/jj134269.aspx
The CopyProfile option does not work. Even after enabling the administrator account in audit mode the start screen tiles are not saved after sysprepping.
Copying the AppFolderLayout.bin file or appsFolder.itemdata-ms to the default user profile does not work. The file is overwritten during the oobe process. I have added these files after sysprepping the image. They are overwritten in the default user
profile during oobe before the new user is created.
Using the StartTiles section of unattend would be the best option that will require fewer manual steps but only seems to be able to add new tiles. I cannot remove tiles or change order with StartTiles.
My unattend.xml file is here: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/10327232/unattend.xml
If anyone has a method that works for them please let me know. Especially if this can be automated using unattend.xml

Copying the AppFolderLayout.bin file or appsFolder.itemdata-ms to the default user profile does not work.

  • Suggestion: Please make a Visual Studio Solution Explorer that is similar to Windows 8 Start Screen

We have monitors now that are enormous and it is now the norm to develop on three or more monitors.  Yet we still try to crowd project navigation info that pleads to be fully visualized into a tiny window as if expanding it is somehow a waste of space.
I mention Windows 8 start screen in the title of this post.  I have no particular love for the start screen except that it is a different spin on a strict hierarchical display of information.  I like that it has the objective of using all available
screen space to present information that would otherwise be shown in a tiny corner of the screen.  So my suggestion in its most general form is for you guys to find a way to use the entire screen to allow a developer to quickly and easily navigate a large
    VS project.
For example, even if I fully expand the Solution Explorer to take up the space of an entire monitor the top level nodes of my project take up a tiny fraction of the available screen space - I have to drill down up to 12 levels to reach my files.  And when
I get to the point where I think I see the file I want, the higher level folders have scrolled off the screen so I loose my place in the project.
A couple of suggestions for a new Solution Explorer:
Edit: Make the Solution Explorer more like the Windows 8 Start screen or a file directory browser in the sense that Start Screen is a full-screen navigation screen versus a control that is primarily desigend to be docked.  If I maximize Solution Explorer
on my monitor the MOST screen space it will use is about 20% down the left edge of my screen.  Even with 80% of my screen left EMPTY, I am clicking and clicking and scrolling and clicking and scrolling in order to navigate to where I need to be. /Edit
Show an always-visible breadcrumb across the top of the window so the user can navigate up quickly and also maintain a sense of location within the project.
Show folders and files horizontally and vertically.  USE THE ENTIRE WINDOW! Allow different views just as we see in Windows file explorer.
Allow (large) user defined icons to be associated with projects, folders and files.  Instead of showing the same icon for every project in a solution, default to a unique icon.  Thats why we use icons, right?
Allow projects and folders to have foreground/background color properties.
"Scope to this" on the context menu is great... please add the root name on the tab.
It would also be very helpful to display the full directory and solution name on the VS title bar to avoid confusion when working with different versions of the same project.  There are a couple add-ons that do this... why has it become necessary for add-ons.

  • Better provisioning in Windows client: Remember templates for the Start Screen - like the need for categorization (taxonomy) in the Start Menu

Better provisioning in Windows client: Remember templates for the Start Screen - like the need for categorization (taxonomy) in the Start Menu ...
Like my previous suggestion about categories alike Linux to clean up the mess in the start menu:
Please help new users to use the Start Screen in valuable way - demonstrate the value.
You don't sell SharePoint with a completely unorded randomized site hierarchy - and without any templates.
Not content - but abstract content like templates are everything when you need to learn to use ... i.e. a new product like the Start Screen. It gets you started right away. A like Word as well.
    Please bring order and form to the content. I.e. T E M P L A T E S parsing the layout of the tiles.
Have context switching for virtualization working with the virtual desktop mode. So I only see those tiles that are in context with my actual workflow.
Of course you would need a well-made taxonomy for apps - i.e. subclassed.

  • Use start screen for start menu

As a member of the rarest breed of people who like the start screen, it would be nice to combine where 10 is with where 8.1 has moved to with regards to the start screen.
I would like to be able to disable the whole recently used/pinned left panel and just have tiles come up. I never use it given the pinned task bar. I don't use jump lists in the start either.
The menu should be resizeable horizontally as well a vertical. I would make mine the full width.
We should still be able to make custom named tile groups just like in 8.1.
Basically I'd just like the start screen embedded in a resizeable pane from the start button.
Making that background transparent would look really slick. Perhaps something like this;  i.imgur.com/bcVVLLH.png

    Hello,
For people who like the start screen I think there is still option to use the start screen. Just right click on taskbar ---> Properties --->Start menu ---> Uncheck the "Use of start menu instead of start screen".
Since based on your description you don't quite need anything from start menu it would be a good solution for you. In this way you can have your start screen back, and don't bother about the start menu.

  • Customize Windows 8.1 Start Screen/Start Menu and Minimizing Modern Apps

How can I customize the start up menu?
If not on desktop, I cannot minimize a window. Please tell me how.

Windows 8/8.1 Metro mode doesn't have a "minimize switch" as Desktop mode, but we have alternative settings
when you want to minimize your metro app, just click the left-bottom corner
to back to the start screen, you can also switch between metro Apps or snap apps as described in the following link, it functions similar as desktop mode, so enjoy the new features.

Got new ATV and all set up. It keeps loosing connection with iTunes on laptop and have tried everything suggested in set up guide. It works fine for a while then the iTunes account vanishes from 'computer' menu TV screen.  Full Wifi signal on both devices so can't think what could be causing it to happen. Any suggestions please?

Sorry, I updated another thread I was a part of but didn't update my own thread.....ughhh!
I updated all of my ATV 2's and 3's to the latest firmware when it was released and have been problem free since. I do believe the major issue of not being able to connect after a period of inactivity has been corrected with the latest ATV firmware.
I can look at my network connection table using "netstat -an" in a CMD window and I do not see the massive number of connections I saw before the update.
Here is a link to the other thread I was referring to above:

Have you applied the latest firmware updates to your ATV 3's?

  • How do I make web shortcuts into start screen tiles that can be pushed to all users profile on a computer in Windows 8.1 enterprise?

We are trying to roll out Windows 8.1 Enterpise in our school system (K-12).
The focus of this question is how do we take an internet web based shortcut and make it into a screen tile (on the start screen) which will appear for any user's start screen that logs on to the computer?
    The details:
We came upon a great paper that's entitled "Customize Windows 8.1 Start Screens by Using Group Policy".
By applying this paper we were able to accomplish our first goal: Lock down the start screen so no user could change it. We accomplished this by using the Start Screen Layout policy setting laid out in the paper.
Our second goal: to customize the start screen is only half way met. We can set up the start screen the way we want and then export the .xml file. We are able to "reimport" the .xml file when the new user logs in. The installed programs
will appear on the Start Screen but not the internet based web shortcuts that were on the inital setup start screen.
(FYI - tried creating these tiles by running the start screen internet explorer app to the intended address and pinning them to the start screen. At this time trying to figure if there is a place to put desktop internet short cuts into a directory to make
them appear on the Start Screen).
We can see that the directory: C:\ProgramData\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs is a place for program files to appear on the start screen. Is there a location web based shortcuts can be placed to cause them to automatically appear on the start
screen for every user as well? If not how do we accomplish getting these into tiles for every user logging in?
Sorry for the lengthy explanation. Hopefully it gets our question answered and helps others out there in the same boat!

    Karen-
Results: Did not work. The web based shortcuts did not appear.
Below is the steps taken with your tips incorporated. (Again it's lengthy sorry about that, but anyone can recreate what was done here. Maybe someone can see something left out by doing/reviewing it).
    Here is what was done:
    1. Installed a fresh install of Windows 8.1 enterprise on a pc. No updates were ran.
    2. During setup created the admin account.
    3. Logged into the account a simple start screen was arranged and setup by:
Starting desktop Internet Explorer. Going to Technet's website. Clicked tools and then selecting "Add site to Apps" from the drop down menu. Went to Apps screen, right clicked and pinned it to start screen. Repeated this procedure with an
    educational web based site.
Right clicked a few provisioned apps and unpinned them from the start screen.
Made a few groups and labeled them. Web based shortcuts were arranged with one provisioned app in that particular group.
    4. Opened a Powershell, right clicked it and ran as administrator. Typed the following:
    export-startlayout -path C:\Users\Public\Master.xml -as xml
(Master is the name chosen for this test .xml file and was put in a location all users would have privelages to access it).
    5. Opened the command prompt and right clicked and "ran as administrator", typed in gpedit.
    6. In the Local Group Policy under User Configuration, under Start Menu and Taskbar I choose the Start Screen Layout.
    7. Enabled the policy and typed in: C:\Users\Public\Master.xml for the Start Layout File.
    8. Opened computer management, under Local Users and Groups I chose Users, right clicked in the middle screen and created a new user called Alpha.
    9. Logged out of the inital account and logged into newly created Alpha account.
    10. When the Alpha account logged in the start screen came up with everything changed in the inital account but no web based shortcuts were found on the start screen or App view.

  • How do I Install LabVIEW on Windows 8 without destroying my Start screen?

I recently upgrdaded my computer and am running Windows 8 now.  I know lots of people will tell me that this was a terrible idea, but it is what it is.  I am actually liking the new start screen once I spent some time getting used to it.  It works well once you customize it to your needs.  Anyway, the problem that I am having, is that when you install NI software (LabVIEW, TestStand, Toolkits, and drivers), about 100 things are added to your start screen.  See "Screenshot 1.png" to see what I am talking about.
My immediate fix was to edit the start menu folder and put everything that I don't need in folder in "My Documents" - called "National Instruments Shortcuts".  Then I just put a shortcut to this folder in my start menu directory.  This gives me the result shown in "Screenshot 2.png".  But my worry is that when NI sends you an update every 6 months and you install, it is going to put everything back.
I am guessing that I am at the mercy of NI to become more Windows 8 friendly.  But maybe somebody here has a better idea?

If a LabVIEW bug is exposed to my customers, I can't just blame it on NI - I have to implement some sort of workaround to hide the bug from my customers so that they don't know its there.
For me that depends on many factors, like the severity of the issue and the relationship with the customer.  Plenty of times I do inform the customer of a LabVIEW bug.  If DAQmx craps out after running for a long time (and NI agrees) I'll do what I can to avoid it, but having a customer think it is my fault when it isn't, is no solution.
Back to the original post I'd highly recommend what others probably already have and that's Classic Shell.  I combine this with DisplayFusion and my Windows 8.1 box works just like Windows 7.  I've only ever seen the new start once, and that was right after the install, right before installing those two tools.

  • Disable context menus in Start Screen in Windows 8.1 Update 1

Is there a way to disable the context menus introduced with Windows 8.1 Update 1?  They make customizing the Start screen much less user friendly than it was previously.
For example, if I want to move/customize multiple tiles, I have to either do it individually or hold control when clicking on the tiles.  Previously I could just right click multiple tiles and it would select them all (which is much easier since it
    only involves the mouse).
One of the reasons I liked the Start screen was not needing to navigate menu trees of varying complexity.  The context menus are re-introducing that, and I'd prefer to not use them if it was possible.

Computer is iMac desktop with OSX 10.6.8. Recently FF's start screen showed a trapezoidal overlay with an amateurish rendering of the FF logo and a "CLICK ME" button. After a minute or so computer would completely freeze, necessitating a hard shutdown. FF's staying uninstalled until I can get an answer re what's going on...I'm certainly not going to click the "CLICK ME" button!

If there are problems with a snippet on the about:home page then you can set the <b>browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl</b> pref to an empty string on the <b>about:config</b> page.
Delete the <b>storage\persistent\moz-safe-about+home</b> folder in the Firefox profile folder with Firefox closed ("3-bar" Firefox menu button > Exit/Quit) to remove snippets stored in IndexedDB and make Firefox use a default snippet set.
You can reset the browser.aboutHomeSnippets.updateUrl pref via the right-click context menu to the default value to re-enable the snippets and make Firefox recreate the moz-safe-about+home folder.

  • Start screen tile

Hi all, I am running out of idea about a problem I have.
I am migrating a computer from Windows 7 SP1 to Windows 8.1 Update using ConfigMgr 2012 R2 and USMT 6.3.
During the deployment of any Windows 8.1 Update image I am forcing the Start Screen display using the Import-StartLayout command with a custom layout I have made.
After running the restore state, I log onto the computer and I have some tile, other than the one from my custom layout, that are displayed on the start screen.
But this only happen when doing a USMT (hardlink) save and restore. When deploying the Windows 8.1 Update image alone, there is no such behavior.
My question, is there a way to track what or when tiles are pinned to the start screen?
Or any idea about where should I look tofind an answer to my problem?
    Thank you!
    Mathieu

I forgot to mentioned that I was using custom migration file and that I was excluding the start menu.
I did found something but I would like to confirm that someone else is having the same behavior.
    1st test:
I took a wim file from a Windows 8.1 ISO that I had and deployed the OS on a VM using a simple task sequence.
I restored the file backed up using USMT from my Windows 7 computer by running manually the command-line.
The result was that I had no unwanted pinned item on my start menu
    2nd test:
I took my custom Windows 8.1wim (that include all the updates) file and deployed it using the same simple task sequence.
I ran USMT manually to restore the files.
There was unwanted tile pinned on my desktop.
    3rd test:
I took the wim file from the ISO (the one in my 1st test) and deployed it using the ame task sequence.
I ran USMT to recover the files, still nothing unwanted on the start screen.
I installed all the updates available and ran USMT again, still nothing on the start screen.
I then installed the KB2919355 and ran USMT again, the unwanted tiles where there.
I confirmed the issue by deploying a wim file took from MVLS, that included Update 1, and I had the same behavior. After running USMT, tiles where pined to my start screen.
I will probably ask open a case but still, if anyone could try this and could give me the result that would be really appreciated.
    Mathieu

  • Internet Explorer immediately launches when try to open the desktop from the Start screen

When I log onto my computer, instead of the Start screen opening, the Desktop opens, AND when the Desktop opens, Internet Explorer immediately launches there.
Other times, when I log-on, my computer will open on the Start screen, but then immediately launches Internet Explorer on the Start screen.  I didn't click any Internet Explorer icons."
Also, when I am doing something on the Start screen and decide I want to go to the Desktop and I click the "Desktop tile" it switches me to the Desktop and launches Internet Explorer.  Again, I didn't click the Internet Explorer tile.
(I just wanted to go to the blank Desktop.)
There is something telling my computer to always open Internet Explorer first.  When I tried a warm boot, the problem went away momentarily, but returned after a few days"

    Hi,
    What is your current situation?
Have you checked the suggestions by Robert?
When opening PC the start menu will automatically start Internet Explorer in APP mode, and if we set Internet Explorer to open in desktop mode, then it will automatically open under desktop when start?
As we have no Internet Explorer in startup configured, so it won't start by itself. We may try to replace Internet Explorer item's position on the start menu with a different APP, then check what happens(drag and drop the desktop icon on the place of the
    Internet Explorer);
Is the MSN webpage your home page here? If not, then there might be some application on the startup automatically launches this page, we may take a try to disable one at a time to check; and if this is your default home page, try to replace it with another
    one, then change it back.
    From the last response of
this thread , it seems this is more related with the webpage than the browser?
