Suggestion: add a "non Apple" Applications topic folder under Applications

Doing so could make it easier to organize tops that are not made by Apple.
Don't get me wrong, I wish I could use ONLY Apple software. But for now, there are still a few non Apple apps that are useful.
Just a thought to help people know where to look on the Apple Discussion site for apps that are not Apple in order to help them solve their problems with Non Apple apps to make that easier to find.
Thanks for listening.

I still like your idea, powerbook.
When I've had a particular problem with, say Word, it would have been nice to have a specific place to post it in. I hesitate to post it in "Tiger Use" - there are so many more issues going on in that forum that I wonder what the chances would be of it being spotted by someone who can help.
I've found that the Microsoft discussions (and Adobe if I remember right) are much more difficult to navigate through and so prefer to use Apple discussions. Then again, maybe I'm just not as familiar with those boards.
I can understand why Apple wouldn't feel responsible for providing a support forum for a product that isn't theirs. But it is the Mac version of these softwares being used with the Mac OS, so maybe it could be seen as justifiable on those grounds.
Anyway, sure would be useful…

  • Non Apple applications fails to launch

    Hello,
Today, when I launched MS Word or other non-apple application (like Indesign 2), I've got the following error :
The application "Word" could not be launched because of a shared library error: "5<Microsoft Word><CarbonLib><CFMPriv_LaunchServices>"
I tried to repair the disk autorization with the disk utility, and I also launched Onyx to reinitialize other system parameters.
I tried to reinstall the Tiger Update 10.4.8 (combo) but it failed..
Does anyone have a solution ? the other Apple Apps work fine (the iApps, mail, safari, etc..)
Thansk in advance for your help !!!

Archive and Install will install a new System but save your Users, network settings, and third party applications, and put your old System in a folder named Previous System. You might want to reinstall plugins rather than to retrieve them from the Previous System. You also might have to reinstall some third party applications if they don't work after the Archive and Install.

  • Some non-Apple applications suddenly won't start.

I've done disk permission repairs, as well as cleared the cache. The problem persists in other logins. The apps don't quit abnormally, they simply bounce once in the dock, then go away.

    Check that user's Application folder.
Do they have another Office on there?
Either an older version, or the Office Test Drive?

  • Upgraded to ios5 and now no non-apple applications installed on my iPad will launch when their icon is clicked

Upgraded to ios5 and now no non-apple applications installed on my iPad will launch when their icon is clicked

Try downloading any free app from the store (as that appears to reset something) and then re-try them - the free app can then be deleted.
If that doesn't work then you could try a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.

  • Non-Apple applications won't launch

On Intel iMac, recently many non-Apple applications won't launch, including Photoshop, Indesign, Quicken, Filemaker, Techtool Pro. On the other hand, Mail, Safari, iPhoto, iTunes, Pixadex, Ultralingua all launch just fine. The non-launchers quickly present the window with Ignore, Report..., Relaunch; and using Relaunch just brings the window up again.
I've tried Disk Utility, both from the drive and from the OSX install disk; Time Machine back to just before the problem started; removed .plist file from Preferences: all to no avail.
While this problem started one week ago, we have had a new iPhone 3G since July 12 (since I see a few discussions with the same error codes related to iPhone).
Below are the error reports for Photoshop and Filemaker, and some system info.
What can I do to fix this? Thanks!

No idea what caused it, but your PPC emulator is definitely hosed and doing a clean installation would probably be less time consuming than figuring out what the problem is.
This is also all very old software that was never meant to run in Leopard at all, so you should consider the possibility that some of it will simply never work.

  • 10.6.2 update causes all non-Apple applications to crash.

update Final Cut Studio 3 and Aperture fail to open as well (pro apps)
Hi: Hoping for some expert help here.
Updated from 10.6.1 to 10.6.2 today, using the combo update. The Software Update version refused to install.
After a reboot, I was *unable to open any non-Apple branded application*. Firefox, Adobe CS3 or CS4, Roxio, MS Office, you name it. All Apple branded apps, iLife, iWork, Mail, Safari, all performed well.
I created a new admin account, hoping that those problems would not occur - but they did.
I have since done a Time Machine backup and am ready to do a clean install to rid myself of this mess.
Before I do, I'm wondering if there's an easy fix out there.
I did do a repair permissions before and after the install. I have removed Application Support files from the Library (both in the root and my profile).
Am now angry and frustrated, but this isn't the first time Apple has let me down with a poor update package.
    Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

I am still happily at 10.6 because .6.1 broke things for some and offered me nothing I needed. Looks like .6.2 combo will be the same. I have no incentive to install it.
    Keep in mind:
    1. There is no evidence that the Snow Leopard updates have broken anything for most users -- because of the focus of forums like this one on problems, they are not reliable indicators of typical results.
    2. Among the reports of Snow Leopard update problems, many if not most are caused by unidentified pre-exsting conditions, not the updates themselves. These things should be fixed whether or not you update the OS because they usually get worse over time & eventually can't be ignored.
    3. For almost all users there are very strong incentives to install the updates. Among them:
    • Eliminating bugs that have been identified in the original release of the OS, typically ones that occur under relatively rare conditions. Just because one has not affected you yet does not mean it won't in the future.
    • Adding small & sometimes not-so-small improvements in the reliability, efficiency, & optimization of applications & application services. Every OS release is subject to deadlines; there are always some things that could be improved given more time to work on them. Software updates give the engineers the time they need to add these tweaks to the system.
    • Eliminating potential security exploits that have been identified in earlier releases of the OS. The OS is pretty secure to begin with; however, it is not so secure that users should become complacent about this -- especially since many of the flaws are well documented, meaning those with malicious intent can easily learn how to exploit them. This has been a historic problem with Windows: so many users of that OS are so lax about applying security updates that Windows malware that could not exploit the updated OS still regularly spread across the Internet & affect tens of millions of users. This includes Mac users because the malware often turns the vulnerable computers into "zombies" used to create botnets to do things like generate spam or launch denial of service attacks.
There is little indication that this kind of malware currently targets Macs -- Windows computers are still the low hanging fruit most malefactors target -- but continued complacency among Mac users about this issue plus the increasing market share of Macs do not bode well for the future.
Simply put, all OS's should be considered ongoing works in need of improvement. Apple does not make public all the fixes or improvements any OS update provides, so unless you try them you won't know how significant they will be for you. Caution is good -- always have a backup/reversion strategy should something go wrong -- but the old adage "if it ain't broke don't fix it" does not apply -- the OS is always broken so it is really a matter of how broken it is, not if it is or isn't.

  • Non-Apple Applications stop loading

Laptop has been working fine, yet suddenly Microsoft Office, Kodak Easyshare, etc. will not load and run. All Apple apps are fine and work normally. Double click on menu, or directly in Applications Folder for MS Office apps or others non-Apple, it seems to start, but no window appears, menu does not change, does not show as active in Apple+Tab listing nor in Force Quit dialog box.
Deleted folder for MS Office, reloaded from install CD ... no change. Then found other non-Apple apps not working as well as all office apps. Not a new laptop unit, it is Intel chip, about 14 months old. May have happened with 10.4.10 update from 10.4.9, but I can't be sure. I can reload the backup image, but I would like to know how this happened or what is causing this.

I have been looking on the Apple support site ... just tried MacFixIt.com ... I'm not getting relevent returns. If you know what keywords found this topic, I'm not having any luck!
Thank you in advance if you can give me even one to start on.

  • Possible to add a non-Apple signal booster to Airport Extreme to improve signal strength?

    Good day to you all.
This might seem like a weird question. I've just rencently purchased my first ever MacBook Pro to enter the Mac family
With it, I also bought an AirPort Extreme. Like others today, I've had a lot of trouble trying to get the thing set up. I somehow managed to get it working, but the signal strength in the far room of the house is too weak.
I suppose I could just get a better Wi-fi adapter for that computer to pick up the better signals, but, my question is:
I have a signal booster (repeater?) from Cisco/Linksys that I used for my Cisco/lynksys router. It would connect to the network and bounce that signal from that base off to improve the signal strength to the rest of the house. It worked like a charm. So, my question is is it at all possible to connect a non-apple booster like this to the network to bounce the signal?
I assume it would work, but thought I'd ask anyway just to be sure; to check if anyone else knows about this. I'm going to try sometime soon if this works, but would love to know what others think.
Thank you very much for your time and help!!

Ah, yes. Good idea. Well, in a few year's time, we'll probably move on to better devices, but, for those who do have something that isn't Apple...I encourage you to try it.
I'm using the Cicsco/Lynksys Range Extender that I believe is simply called RE1000; mine was refurbished, too.
Anyway, it came with a set up disc that I'm not entirely sure if it works on a Mac computer. I didn't try it.
You'll run the set up disc (somehow), make sure you follow the instructions on the screen, and it should allow the RE1000 to find the network you created using the AirPort. Once the set up is complete, it'll ask you to move the RE1000 to another electrical outlet in your house that can take the signal and bounce it to a wider area of your house, and presumably the neighborhood (secure your network).
Seemed to work without a hitch. So, if you're not using an Apple range extender (another AirPort type thing), hopefully this helps you. It did work for me, otherwise I would have taken the AP Extreme back for a refund haha

  • ISight works only with non-Apple applications

So maybe this is a weird one. Since updating to 10.6.5, anything made by Apple isn't recognizing my iSight camera. Skype works, online Flash applications work...but no dice for the FaceTime beta, iChat, PhotoBooth, or iMovie. It simply states that the camera is not connected - but I know it is.
This happens on multiple accounts, and System Profiler shows that the camera is indeed connected. There are some permissions issues (currently being repaired), but none of them appear to be connected with the camera, based on location alone.
The next step is obviously resetting the SMC/PMU, but what if that doesn't work? Should I just attempt reinstalling only those applications, or is there some deeper issue going on here? (I do feel like I got a bum hard drive, which I need to have replaced while I'm still under warranty, but I don't think the two issues are connected.)
    Thanks!

    So my suggestions are:
    (1) Backup your Mac and get an appointment to have your "bum hard drive" serviced ASAP.
You are correct that the hard drive may not have anything to do with your problem. However, getting the drive fixed before a complete crash will minimize chances of losing any of your valuable files. While they are performing the warranty work, the Service Technicians can easily transfer files to the new drive from your "bum" drive that requires replacement but is still working.
    (2) If your iSight problem is the same when you get your Mac back from service, reset SMC/PMU.
    (3) If resetting SMC/PMU does not help, download and apply the 10.6.5 Combo Update:
      http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1324
Repair permissions immediately before applying the update and again immediately following the restart that completes the Combo Update.

  • All non-Apple applications crashing on startup...

    Hi
I have had my G4 Mac Mini for just over a year now and it has been a flawless experience! I have been an ardent PC user since the 1980s, but MacOS X has me convinced I have been wrong...
Within the last week or so opening any application results in the app crashing! Microsoft Office apps, Photoshop CS2, Fontbook, Disk Utility... all of these are crashing on startup.
I have read many posts and threads here, but none seem to help mainly because i cannot even get diagnostic tools like Disk Utility to run.
I have not installed or removed any software... so this behaviour seems very odd.
I REALLY don't want to reinstall everything from scratch...has anyone any advice for a PC expert poorly-skilled Macs?
    Many Thanks
    Peter.

You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.7 Combo Updater.
This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before. It has worked well for many.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions before and after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.
    For Intel:
You may be able to repair this with the 10.4.7 Stand Alone Combo Updater
    Good luck, let us know.

  • Safari update effecting other non-Apple applications?

    Greetings All,
Updated Safari 3.2.1 in the vain hope that it would solve issues from the last update. Now a new problem. All files created in CAD application Vectorworks since update Safari take an inordinately long time to open. Not sure how or why Safari could effect other applications, beyond permissions, but...
I have repaired disk permissions, thrown away Safari preferences and restarted. A little better but not much.
    Any thoughts? Thanks in advance.

It is very unlikely that the Safari 3.2.1 update is responsible for this issue. I would suggest contacting the developer of the application that is misbehaving and asking them for assistance.

  • How to use iPhoto Library in non Apple applications.

    Hello,
I am fairly new to Mac OS and love iPhoto. However, when I try to access my iPhoto library in Microsoft word, or on shutterfly or other applications I cannot access it. My migrated photos from my old PC are accessible, but iPhoto library is not. Can someone please advise? Thank you kindly.

The problem is that it's too straightforward.
In Facebook or whatever click on Open or Attach or what ever button you use get the photo up there.
That give you a window that looks like this:
See the word Photos in the red box indicated by the arrow? It is possible that you might have to scroll a little to see it... Click on that word and then you get this:
In other words: there's your entire iPhoto Library, all of it. Click on the shot or shots you want and click on open. That's it. Your photos on your website or facebook or in whatever app you used and you didn't even have to leave that app.

  • I have Firefox 12 installed, and went to install add-onns, i added maybe 6 add ons, none of them show up under "add-ons"

I have installed Firefox 12, i then added 6 add-ons, when i go check on them, i go to "tools"\"add-ons", and find nothing there. Some show up under "tools" (like tweaktube and delicious) but none show up in the main list of add-ons.

It is possible that there is a problem with the file(s) that store the extensions registry.
Delete the files extensions.* (e.g. extensions.sqlite, extensions.ini, extensions.cache) and compatibility.ini in the Firefox profile folder to reset the extensions registry.
New files will be created when required.
    See "Corrupt extension files":
    *https://support.mozilla.org/kb/Unable+to+install+add-ons
If you see disabled, not compatible, extensions in "Tools > Add-ons > Extensions" then click the Tools button at the left side of the Search Bar (or click the "Find Updates" button in older Firefox versions) to check if there is a compatibility update available.

  • Apple applications crashing immediately on launch

    Hi All
I am having a problem with a 2007 iMac running 10.7.2. Whenever I try to launch an Apple application almost all of them are immediately crashing. This includes Safari, Mail, iTunes etc. Non-Apple applications like Word, Excel (2008) seem to be working fine. Some Apple applications do seem to be working okay, e.g. System Preferences, Console.
I have tried to open the apps with a different user on the machine but the same symptoms are being observed. Therefore, I guess there must be some system-level resource that these apps are trying to access that has a problem.
I am controlling the machine via a (non-Apple) VNC connection, which seems to be working fine as well.
The only recent change to the system was the printer driver update recently released by Apple but it was working okay immediately after that update was performed on this machine yesterday.
If anyone has any suggestions on potential causes and/or solutions I would be most grateful!
    Cheers
    Gavin

  • Apple applications won't restart from dock

I've had this problem with Lion since day one, and although I am now running 10.7.4, the problem persists.
I run a MacBook Pro with mostly standard software. The exceptions are Adobe Flash Player, Flip4Mac WMV, Growl, Perian, Synergy, and Logitech Control Center. Most recent versions of all these products are installed.
I keep all of the applications I use most frequently on my dock. Most of the time I have Mail, iCal, Safari, System Preferences, Address Book, MS Word, MS Excel, MS Powerpoint, Adobe Reader, and Dictionary open. Filemaker Pro, Skype, and Stickies are often open as well. iPhoto, iPhoto Library Manager, and iTunes are only occasionally open.
I generally sleep my computer when not using it. I restart about once a week on average.
If I want to bring one of these applications to the front, I click on the Dock icon. Mail, Safari, and the non-Apple applications ALWAYS come to the front.
iCal, System Preferences, Address Book, and Dictionary hardly ever do. In order to access them, I have to launch Launchpad, then click on the dock icon again since Launchpad does not bring them to the front.
If I minimize the applications instead of hiding them, the minimized icon works, but then my dock has two versions of each application.

What happens if you go to office preferences (from your pulldown menu with Word or Excel open) >> general >> "show project gallery at startup" and deselect that item?
It's also possible that it could be a font that Office does not care for. Try dragging ~(yourhome)/library/fonts to the desktop and logging out and back in or restarting.
