Suggestion: airtunes should be a system-wide "sound out" option.

instead of limiting itunes to using the airtunes option. shouldn't it be made an option in the "sound out" control panel? that would make sense... it should be easy to do as well...
cheers,
pierre

Hi Pierre,
I believe the reason that its not a system wide option is that the sound is streamed to the Airtunes, and therefore there is a lag which would be problematic for watching movies, garageband or other apps which would require synching the sound to what you are doing or seeing on your computer.
I have heard a product called airfoil, but have no personal experience with using it.
Cheers

  • The choice of headphone jack is not showing up under the system preferences - sound output options.  Therefor, my speakers suddenly do not work with my iMac

On my Intel based iMac, OS 10.6.8, my speakers suddenly were not transmitting sound. When I checked the System Preferences, Sound output, the headphone option was no longer available.  This has always worked in the past - what is up?
    Anyone have any suggestions???

    Click the Built-in Output.
Under Mute any of the boxes checked? If so uncheck it.
Plug in the headphone and check whether in the output  headphone shows up in the same panel.
If so, you can adjust the volume there.

  • There is no audio output on my MBA in the system preferences-sound folder. Therefore no sound comes from my computer. At the same time this happened, any streaming video stopped playing after 11 seconds, as well as iTunes will not play any song. Help!?

    Hello everyone.
i have a 15" MBA circa 2011 running Lion 10.7.5 and my sound has gone, There is a no sound circle on my volume display and in system preferences sound my options for output is empty. At the same time this happened I noticed 2 things: 1) itunes would not actually play any audio track and every video i streamed stopped after a few seconds (usually 11s) but not always.
I have tried following some tips I have found online like going into MIDI and fixing the problem there, restarting in safe mode. Resetting with PRAM (or something that sounds like that).
Does anyone have any insight on this? At this point i'm thinking it's time to reload Lion but I don't really know how to go about that without losing all of my files.
    Please Help
    Thanks

    OBIEE 11.1.1.5
I go into the Manage Privileges screen and under the Formatting->Save System-Wide Column Formats option, there are no roles listed
and there doesn't appear to be any way to add a role. So now I have no way to save a system-wide default even logged in as an
administrator. Every other privilege is fine except this one. Any ideas how this might have occurred and how to add a role to the
    privilege?

    MuRam,
You are posting a link to OBIEE 10g documentation, when the OP has clearly stated he is dealing with OBIEE 11.1.5.
I am facing the same issue - Manage Privileges > Formatting > Save System-Wide Column Formats - there is no link for me to click on that allows me to manage that privilege.
Anyone know how to fix this?
    Thanks.

  • Setting ALSA sound card system wide (rather than just in KDE)

    Hi,
I've got an HTPC with an ATI Radeon HD 4350 graphics card running Arch x86. It has its own integrated sound card for outputting audio via HDMI, which is detected by ALSA as a separate device. I've managed to set it as the default audio device in KDE 4 (via System Settings). This allows applications such as Amarok and SMPlayer to properly output audio to the HD 4350's integrated sound card, but software such as Flash and MPlayer (from the command line) are still outputting audio to the motherboard's built-in sound card. How can I change this setting on a system-wide level? I've tried running alsaconf as root and adding
    pcm.!default {

to ~/.asoundrc; I got the card and device numbers from aplay:

  • System wide PDF presets location is not working in CC

On both Mac and PC, the system wide location for PDF settings (.joboptions) does not work anymore.
    /Library/Application Support/Adobe/Adobe PDF/Settings (on a Mac)
It is illogical to remove this feature. Even if that folder does not store the main default presets, which are now stored in each application, it still needs to be looked at and loaded from. It's actually illogical to store the same preset in multiple locations (i.e. each application). If there is a preset that is only for a certain application (e.g. Illustrator Default), this could be put in the application folder, but all others like High Quality, Prepress, PDF/X should be in a central location, i.e. where they used to be.
I know that each user can manually load into their own PDF presets, which then do appear in all suite apps, but this has to be done every time a new user logs into a computer.
The central location meant that all suite apps would see a custom set of presets automatically across the entire suite and across multiple versions of the suite. The other advantage to the central location is that the presets would appear in square brackets, in other words read only, so they cannot be changed by the user without saving as a new file.
Having users manually load and be able to change the presets kind of defeats the purpose of having a preset, certainly in our environment, where we need these settings to be consistent across all apps, all computers and all users.
Please put this feature back or at least honour the central location that used to be used.

    Hi,
As per the description, I understand that your Office 2013 cannot open files through a network share directly.
I would like to know that how many clients/users are affected by this in your environment. It could be some specific user account settings, that the Office applications are being affected by.
I'd first suggest you try with a new Windows user profile, then verify result.

  • System wide search...

    hello,
i'm trying to come up with the best way to search system wide for files that contain a certain name or maybe a certain type of file. i'm looking at any possibilities...here are some i've considered...
    applescript - list folder
shell script - find, locate, msfind, ls | grep
    cocoa/carbon - nsdirectoryenumerator, fscatalogsearch
i know this is the applescript forum but since there are some limitations (i think) in searching with plain applescript i'm sure all of you might have some suggestions as to what is the best approach? as for the search being system wide i should say as much possible because i want to keep the time down (as fast as possible). so i can take some shortcuts if necessary...
    thank you,
    rick

    Great!
This test shows that the search is for files containing the name. notice that some of the files begin with period.

  • File Type Associations Do Not Stick System-Wide CS4

When I set File Type Associations for PSD, Tiff, DNG and Jpeg fles in Bridge CS4 so that my files will open in PS CS3 (and insure that the same file associations apply in Bridge CS3), this works as it should from within CS4 and CS3, but it is impossible to introduce a system-wide change in Mac OS 10.5.5 via File-Info. It always reverts to CS4 for these file types, if I try to 'modify all'. The same thing happened when I upgraded from CS2 to CS3.

If File Type Associations are set properly in the Bridge preferences, the default setting can be made to open files in PS CS3, with CS4 installed. This works from within CS3 and CS4. However, it sometimes happens that one is in the Finder, and the default remains PS CS4, however much one tries (via File-Get Info) to modify the default system-wide settings so that these files open in CS3. In any event, a bit invasive. Of course, if I could get comfortable with the Adjustment Layer Panels, all this would be unnecessary, but for the moment, there appear to be too many clicks, and it is going to take some time, so I don't want to burn bridges. Perhaps there is also some ambiguity in my mind as to what the pointing finger in the new Curves dialogue box, much like a tolling bell, is trying to tell me.
But thanks, once again Anne, for your good-natured help.

  • Hi i upgrade from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am getting no sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever

Hi i upgraded from lion to mountain lion to day on my mini mac,Since the upgrade i am no longer getting sound through my HDMI cable which was working fine on lion Checked the midi audio settings and system preferences to out on HDMi nothing no sound whats so ever.Any one any ideas?
I use a samsung TV for my monitor via HDMI.Tried all the system Audi setting nothing .Head phone and internal speakers are fine.

Similar issue; Audio was working fine on Lion, now not on Mountain Lion. Have a Macbook Pro early 2011 with AMD Radeon HD 6750M, connected by thunderbolt through a Lacie LBD to a mini-displayport to HDMI adapter (n.b. same problem when not going through the LBD) to a Pioneer VSX 521 AV receiver. For me when I go into audio Midi settings all the volume sliders for the displayport device are greyed out and at zero. But when I click 'configure speakers', it's able to send out the test signals to each speaker. Part of the problem could be that I'm not getting the option to put out 6channel sound, only 2 or 8 channel. Since my system is Dolby 5.1, and I only have 6 speakers, I would have expected the 6ch option to be available. But I imagine there's more to it than that. Elsewhere someone has suggested playing with Remote Interactive over HD on an Onkyo device; I'll see if there's something similar on the Pioneer that can be changed. Any other suggestions welcome.

  • I've tried to update my i-Tunes version after the site suggested I should following my i-Pad being plugged into it for the first time. The update seemed successful but the program would not open at all despite switching off the PC and re-starting several

I’ve tried to update my i-Tunes version after the site suggested I should following my i-Pad Air being plugged into it for the first time. The update seemed successful but the program would not open at all despite switching off the PC and re-starting several times. I then tried wiping the original software from the computer and re-downloading from scratch. Each time I tried the download failed with a message saying “Service “Apple Mobile Device” failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services” At this stage, the only way forward was to “abort” the download. This I have done now four times and the same thing happens. When I did finally manage to get an i-Tunes shortcut on my desktop, the program wouldn’t open saying: “i-Tunes was not installed correctly. Please re-install i-Tunes. Error 7 (Windows error 193)” Any ideas to resolve this?

  • Suggest: pacman should have an option to ignore package chk

I am a new Archlinux user. I have tried to install Archlinux in my computer several times. To avoid additional network access, I always backup the pkg.tar.gz files from my cache folder before installing Archlinux and restore them after first boot into the new system and before running "pacman -Syu".
Last time I tried to use the ABS system to build my own packages with customized CFLAGS & CXXFLAGS. I was using srcpac to build some system packages without any problem.
However, next time when I try to reinstall my system the pacman complains about "corrupted" .pkg.tar.gz files. Because I can use "pacman -U " to install them (but not "pacman -S"), I recon the files are not corrupted and the only problem is that they are not downloaded from archlinux.org (or any other mirror sites) but compiled in the previous Archlinux system installed in the same computer.
I have tried to find out options available in the menu of pacman but I have not found any option to avoid this problem.
Here is my SUGGESTION: add an option (say "--nocheck") which ignores the integraty check of the files.

So, what should I do to for the new installation? How to restore the my repo in the new installation? And if I replaced some packages in "core" repo or even "base" group with some compiled packages in my local repository, which checksum will be detected first?
It depends what repo comes first in your pacman.conf. If you put your personal repo at first place (or exactly, before the official repos), pacman will use your self compiled packages and so prevent updates. You have to take care for that yourself. In the opposite case your selfmade packages will be overinstalled with next update.
If you only want to install one specific package, you can use the syntax "pacman -Sy <repo>/<package>" to install from a specific repo.
As you can see, if I use a local repo I have to worry about the update of repos, and it is not a solution good enough.
I am not sure whether "pacman -Sy <repo>/<package>" is working or not, because when you are installing a package all the dependents has to be installed first. If the dependent packages is also customised and have another version (with SAME version number), can pacman check the same repo before checking the "core"/"extra"/"community" repos? If the answer is yes I recon this is a good solution.

  • OSX System Wide Font Size?

I just bought my first 27 inch iMac..
Although I'm lovin it, I do have it sitting at arms length away from me and am finding the font size vert small..
With this high res display the font is a bit tiny and am just wondering if its possible to change the system wide font size?
Ny eyesight is great but I'm finding that I need the computer right up to my face to be able to comfortable see the fonts..

    There are some suggestions here
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/17593815#17593815
including changing the screen resolution and the font size for folder and icons.
Another option not mentioned there is to enable the 'Use scroll gesture with modifier keys to zoom' option in
     > System Preferences > Accessibility | Zoom
After that, you can hold down the 'control' key and 2-finger swipe to zoom the entire screen.

  • System preference SOUND does not list Samsung as a choice.  Picture is perfect, but no sound.

My Samsung shows up in the display settings, but not in the sound settings.  It's not listed.  Does Mac have an "add hardware" function?  System Preferences is reading the Samsung DISPLAY, but not the SOUND list does not include Samsung.  What middle step am I missing?  I'm sure there must be some way to get the Samsung sound recognized.

I have Thunderbolt as well, and I get a great picture.  I just don't get any sound.  i read a suggestion in this group to go to System Preferences>Sound>Output>and choose Samsung, but Samsung isn't a choice.  This is why I raised the question of how to add Samsung to the list.  I'm using my TV as a mirror.  Could that be the problem?  How do you use your HDTV?

  • System(Windows) sound is quiet

I have a dv6-1355dx and until a few days, the sound was just fine.  For some odd reason, now the Windows system sounds have gotten quieter.  I checked all of the sound settings and everything is on high volume.  Even other video/audio clips are as loud as it should be, but the Windows sounds just seemed to be muffled.  I've installed newer drivers, reinstalled the original driver and nothing makes it different
Does anyone have any clue as to what could be the cause?

    - Go to Settings>Music and see if volume limit is turned on.
    - Try resetting your iPod.  Nothing will be lost.
Reset iPod touch:  Press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home
button at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
-Try fully inserting and then pulling out the headphone plug about five to ten times.
    - Restore the iPod.  First from backup and if problems persist. restore to factory defaults.
    - If still problems. I wold make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.

  • System-wide blue to purple color switch bug

I've been having a very confusing and inconsistent color issue which has persisted for years on both a PowerBook G4 and my new MacBook Pro using Panther and Tiger respectively. The MacBook is only two weeks old and still has a very clean system.
Seemingly at random blue colors will switch to purple in random places in most apps. Restarting the computer used to solve the issue, but it no longer does - I am permanently stuck with a purple color scheme (screenshots further down).
    - The default unvisited link color in all apps has switched from blue to purple.
    - The finder icon has switched from blue to purple in both the dock and the command-tab switcher (but the icon is the correct color when viewed inside the CoreServices folder). All other blue dock icons are unaffected.
    - Some toolbar or sidebar images in most apps which were blue are now purple, but other blue icons have stayed blue.
I have screenshots just to show that I'm not imagining this. Mail and the Finder use the same drag-and-drop sidebar highlight color. However, Mail has now taken on a purple theme:
And here is the Finder icon as seen in the dock, and then as an alias in the Finder:
Here is what I have tried thus far (nothing has worked):
    - Logging out and in
    - Logging out and in while holding shift (safe login)
    - Restarting the computer
    - Restarting the computer while holding shift (safe boot)
    - Repairing permissions and restarting
    - Zapping the PRAM (command-option-p-r)
    - Creating a new user account and logging into it
    - Running daily, weekly, and monthly cron scripts using Onyx
    - Deleting all caches for applications, fonts, system, and kernel
    - Pulled everything out of the main Library (Macintosh HD/Library/), cleared caches, and restarted
From this I've concluded that it's probably a bug or corrupted file in the core system since safe boot, clean user accounts, and a bare library didn't fix the problem. The obvious solution would be to re-install the OS, but I'm afraid that the problem would just happen again since it has been occurring with multiple versions of the OS on two different computers.
    Does anyone have any ideas?

I should add that this has been a slowly developing problem, one which is only getting worse. The first effect was a system-wide change in the default unvisited link color. Restarting the computer solved the problem whenever it would occur (about twice a day). The next to be affected was image colors, and once this happened for the first time, restarting the computer no longer fixed the problem.
