Suggestion: Clearly warning presented in Software Update

After having had two nightmare experiences of my own in 10.4 using the "Software Update" facility to update my system, and given the apparently large corpus of users out there having similar (and worse) problems, I would very politely suggest to Apple that they modify the "New Software Update" popup window (for want of a better description) with a clearly presented warning that the following should be carried out when updating OS X:
1. Disabling system extensions/haxies before attempting the upgrade and before doing 2. below;
2. permissions/disks should be repaired before and after attempting the (system) update;
3. that external devices be disconnected before attempting the system update;
Plus
4. Give a link by which the user can choose to download the Combo updater for that particular OS spec, with, optionally, an explanation as to why this may be necessary *for system updates*.
10.3 certainly seemed to be better, but 10.4 definitely seems to be a lot more problematic in this regard.
Cheers,
Alex.

Yes backing up, repairing permissions, repairing the hard driving, and disconnecting all peripheral devices except the keyboard prior to upgrading is basic, and should be explicitly explained prior to upgrading. I did a simple upgrade on an eMac and iBook from 10.3.9, fortunately both had dvd drives. And did a simple upgrade on an old slot loading iMac from 10.2.8 using it in target disc mode since it had a CD-RW drive. The iMac has a nonpartioned disc with 9.2.2 on it as well next to 10.4.5. And, I am able to boot up in both OS9 and OSX on the iMac. Everything totally rocks now. Had some minor snafus with some lost emails on eMac (which i use the most), and norton system works and antivirus, which i got rid of, resulting in better and faster performance. Tiger does not work well with norton AV autoprotect. And yes, you need antivirus software, especially, if using microsoft office and networking with windows PC. Symantec estimates for every 1000 PC viruses there is one for apple. norton AV has saved me once, and just once, in that regard. I encountered a virus only once. But I have parted with Norton for good. It really slows your computer down. My problem with new apples is the bad hardware they use, I have 2 hard drives crash on my iBook and iMac when both were only 1 1/2 years and 2 years old respectively. However my ancient Power Macintosh 7500/100 with 1GB hard drive with OS8 still boots up and my 4 year old plays with that one. I forget where the Apple IIc went.

  • Software Update Server not supplying updates

    Greetings All,
I started a SUS on a running server. After configuring it I left it to download all the updates. The updates appear in the list displaying that they are copied and enabled. When I then "pointed" one of the local clients towards it and ran Software Update on the client machine it returned the message that there were no new updates relevant to the machine to be found on the server. Then I tried entering the path to the index file into Safari and it came up making me believe that there were no issues with the connection between the two machines. Since the server must be the problem I then tried this command on the server:
    +grep swupd /etc/swupd/com.apple.server.swupdate.plist > ~/Desktop/update.txt+
When inspecting the update.txt file I noticed that it was completely empty. After consulting the manual yet again I looked into the /usr/shar/swupd/ directory and found that there were a vast quantity of data in the /html/content/downloads/ directory. After reading a few posts I decided to delete all this data and allow the server to download them again. Now the directory contains 15GB but the issue remains. A grep of com.apple.server.swupdate.plist still comes up empty.
The only errors that I see in the log are these:
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:28 2009] [notice] caught SIGTERM, shutting down
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:34 2009] [notice] Apache/1.3.41 (Darwin) configured -- resuming normal operations
[Mon Sep 28 10:29:34 2009] [notice] Accept mutex: flock (Default: flock)
Any ideas? Have I missed something very obvious?
Thank you for your time and effort on this forum!

I have been running Software Update Server since a few days after the Mac Mini Server came out. It really helps the other macs in my household get their updates fast - when it works.
After "a while", the clients stop seeing updates - all at the same time. So, it's not a client problem. The thing that no one else has pointed out is that the "Your software is up to date." message on the client is abnormal.
In a normal up-to-date client, the "*Your software is up to date.*" modal dialog rolls down from an empty list of updates.
In this failure case, the modal dialog rolls down from the "*Software updates are available for your computer. Do you want to install them?*" window. This suggests (to me) that the Software Update client saw some indication that an update was available, but later decides not.
Since this is hard to describe, I've taken a few pictures:

  • Software update doesn't find new iTunes

For a while now when I open iTunes, it tells me there is an update available. When I click download, it sends me to Software Update. Software Update tells me "Your software is up to date". I check that iTunes was not an "ignored update" and it is not. I know I can download manually from the apple website, but that is not convenient and it means something on my computer is not setup correctly.
Anyone have suggestions on how to make Software Update realize I have an iTunes update?
    thanks

What version of the Mac operating system is installed on your MacBook? To find this information, go to the Apple menu, select About this Mac and look where it says version.
iTunes 11.0.1 requires Mac OS X 10.6.8 or later, so if you want to use your iPhone with your MacBook, you will need to update the OS on the MacBook at least that far.
You can purchase 10.6.8 on disk from Apple for $20 (in the USA.)
If you want to get a more recent OS, let us know what the specs on your MacBook are, we'll tell you what you can get.
    Best of luck.

  • Software update in mountain lion offers updates for iPhoto and iMovie that will not install

Updated my iMac 2011 to Mountain Lion. Software Update now operates through the App Store. Third Party apps are OK but Apple's native Mac apps eg iPhoto, iMovie offer updates for installation that do not install.
Get this error eg for iMovie but similar for iPhoto and maybe others:
"We could not complete your update.  iMovie is already installed on this computer. Choose Software Update from the Apple menu to check for available updates."
If you do as suggested, it reloads App Store software update and goes round again...
If I go to "Check for updates" in the iMovie menu it tells me it's the current version.
"This version of iMovie (9.0.8) is the current version."
The badge showing the count of apps requrining an update is also wrong.

Hi, just wondering, were any of Apple's Apps moved from there default location?

  • Software Update does not keep packages.

When using Software Update, there is a choice to Download and Install Package.
The help info, says that this will be kept in the Downloads folder, (as are downloads from Safari).
Selecting Download and Install Package from the menu, which starts the process as normal, but on more than one occasion, no software update is kept.
If is it kept in another location, I cannot find it.
I am used to this practice under Panther, where I was able to keep all updates.
In the event of a base reinstall, one can bring the system to to date, from all the packages burnt to a CD.
Given that these Leopard updates are huge, I see more reason than ever to be able to keep these packages.
How can I fix Software Update to do this. Any other suggestions please.

1.) Use Software Update ONLY to figure out what updates you need.
2.) Download the needed update from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/
3.) Install the update and save the downloaded file wherever you want it.
I do this because I have a slow satellite connection and three computers. I run into town to the internet cafe, download all the updates, then come home and install them on the computers! Even with the trip to town, this approach saves me a lot of time and frustration; plus, when I am ready to wipe a hard disk and reinstall the entire thing, I have all the files handy.
    Hope that helps. (jk)

  • Software Updates wont install - it just reboots when try to

    Hi!
Suddenly after no problem since 2007 I have this issue that when updates are presented via Software Updates, those updates that i have to click on "restart" button, wich loggs me out and then the updates supposed to install - but! Before they install the system just reboots as if the updates couldnt install and then my Mac just reboots. So for a time now i have to install the updates manually, wich is annoying.
Anyone heard of this before? Tried to repair permissons but no luck

Repair permissions is in Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility under the First Aid section. You have to select the hard drive icon within Disk Utility to get Repair permissions to be possible to select. Most updates don't need it. Occasionally when you install new software issues may arise that make permissions go bad, which affects future software updates. This is the pitfall of using any third party software that most users learn about. It might never progress because of permissions, or a hard disk that is too full, or a corrupt download if you don't have high speed internet to get it from.

  • Software Update and/or Verification Failure problem

I am having problems downloading and installing updates on my Mac Pro, but not on my MacBook Pro. One of two things happens. Either the "checking for new software" box is displayed for a second and then disappears leaving the an empty "New Software is available for your computer" box. Or, I will get a "Failed to check for updates" message telling me to "make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again". But I was connected.
If I try to download the software directly (say iTunes 7.4) the dmg file will download but then give a "Verification Failed" message when it tries to mount itself.
Both computers have essentially the same software and settings. But the Mac Pro seems to be missing out on some kind of critical handshaking operation. This is a relative new problem (about 2 weeks) and does not seem to correspond to the installation of any new software. I have tried deleting the com.apple.SoftwareUpdates.plist (no joy), followed the instructions in Apple doc # 106695 (also no joy) and can't install Onyx because the dmg file won't mount.
    d.m.h.

Thanks dbsantana. Unfortunately, it didn't fix mine. I have also tried the suggestions in the Trouble Shooting Software Update referenced by Dale Weisshaar, but without success. Further trouble shooting suggests that the problem may not be with Software Updates but with downloading and mounting application. The download fails at the point of verifying the downloaded file. I never get the "This software contains an application. Do you want to continue?" But a dmg file does appear in my Documents Folder. If I click on this dmg file I get an codec overrun error. I had tried to download OnyX on the Mac Pro with this problem. I then downloaded it on the MacBook Pro and moved it over to the Mac Pro and successfully installed it. I will continue the troubleshooting until someone comes up with an answer. What is even more confusing is that I also did that with iTunes 7.4 and it said that it upgraded iTunes on my Mac Pro. But it still shows 7.3.2 instead of the 7.4 shown on the MacBook.

  • How Software Update Server Broke Today...

So, in an ongoing series titled "How My Software Update Server Broke On Me Today," we come to today's episode:
SU server, after working flawlessly for 4 whole days straight, will now only push ONE new update out of the THREE new ones that came out yesterday to the clients. This was after last week's episode where we had to go into the Apple.sucatalog file, rename that, move it elsewhere and pray that it started working again (which it did for four whole days).
What will our hero do this week? My first suggestion to myself--stop using software update server and end the misery and pain once and for all.

All servers may be down from time to time, either for regular maintenance or because of various other problems.

  • Software Update stopped working after download of Pro Application 4.0.1

I'm reposting this since the subject was not clear.
After using Software Update to download "Pro Application support 4.0.1" the Software Update utility stopped working the next time I went to used it. It just sits at the "checking for new software" screen with only a 6th of the blue bar used. It cansels OK. I let it run for more than 30 minutes before canceling. I'm not sure if "Pro Application support 4.0.1" had anything to do with it. But it was the last thing done with the application.

    Hello,
Perhaps your Software Update prefs are corrupted. Do this:
    Locate this file: com.apple.softwareupdate.plist
It's here: /Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash. Empty the Trash and reboot.
Run Disk Utility located in your Applications folder and Repair Disk Permissions.
Also, make sure your hard drive has no less than 15% free hard drive space. To locate this information, open a Finder window. The information will be displayed at the bottom.

Are you using the lastest version of Firefox for os 10.4.11?  If you are, start using TenFourFox.  Quicktime works just fine with that browser.

  • C3-01 software update suggestions

just a few simple (and a few not so simple) software update suggestions for the c3-01:
-allow to search for artists by typing in first letter of artist name in the music application. It allows this type of search for songs but not for artists, and if you have alot of music on your phone it is very annoying to have to scroll through the list everytime you want to change song.
-allow to type in numbers when typing text by pressing asterisk key or similar. This type of function was present on older phones but it doesnt appear to be on this phone. Instead you have to hold each number for a few seconds to type in a number in an sms message or on the internet and it greatly slows down typing speed which i was hoping to speed up by getting a touch and type phone. It kind of defeats the purpose!!!
-allow to choose shortcuts twice on homescreen. It seems kind of silly to not allow you to do this when its easily possible as i'd prefer more than 4 shortcuts on my homescreen.
-allow to change keypad lock settings. This is so simple and was available on older phones, why not include with this one??
-allow to skip tracks in music application by pressing keypad buttons (e.g. 4 and 6 or 1 and 2). This is particularly useful when phone is plugged into car radio and being able to skip between tracks by feeling for buttons rather than maybe having to look down to press touch screen buttons because you cant feel them, which is pretty dangerous when driving!
-the apps available in the Ovi store on the c3-01 is reeeaallly limited compared to android and apple stores. Please try n introduce more useful apps!!
-upgrade voice recorder. Im a musician and i and most other musicians usually find phone recorders very useful to record song ideas, riffs etc. However I find the voice recorder quality very poor. Im sure the phone microphone isnt that poor and sound quality can be improved with upgrade software. Please upgrade or introduce new sound recorder app on OVI. I suggest the "Tape-a-Talk Records" app which is currently available on the android app store. I found this app to greatly improve sound recording quality on my old HTC compared to the onboard sound recorder.
I love this phone but it would be great to see some improvements!
Thanks for your time and consideration.

    I feel your pain.
I bought an unlocked C3-01 off amazon too, and have had no luck in v6.00 automatic updates or anything. Eventually I (UNADVISED!) updated it myself. You can find discussions online that tell you how to do it. People flash their own phones. The only reason I did so was because I was getting a terrible high pitched noise every 45 seconds or so on phone calls that was preventing me from using the phone -- several times I had a hard time hearing well after it would...go off? right in my ear. The phone was unusable, and using the headset didn't help either. I'm curious, does yours do the same?
I had a backup android phone that I could use in case I bricked mine, so taking all the risks in hand I flashed mine to v6.00 on my own. No more high pitched ear aches! AND it works tons better. I'm really impressed with 6.00. It turned my C3-01 from clutter in my drawer to my everyday phone.
It's too bad that nokia has kind of foresaken the US market when it comes to many cell phones. I am a die hard Nokia fan, so I'll keep buying unlocked Nokias, but still. I'd like to see SOME support for the US market that ISN'T smartphones, you know?

iOS 5.1.1 Software Update - just tried to update and it didn't work! Got to the final stages and was presented with error 1602! My screen now has the frozen image of the itunes logo and usb thing. Happened once before - funnily enough when doing an update back in November - I had to visit an Apple store to have the phone restored. Would appreciate any advice as I would like to avoid another trip to the apple store.

    found the real problem.
In my laptop where it couldn't detect the iphone and ipad, this folder is missing:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
The ipad was wrongly using a microsoft driver.
I found the correct drivers in:
    C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\FileRepository\usbaapl64.inf_amd64_neutral_c111a aecb61e9a2b
    Copy the contents to
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Apple\Mobile Device Support\Drivers
After that, I had to update the driver for Ipad in device manager.
Ipad was found under: "Removable Devices", as a storage device.
Once that is fixed, itunes can detect ipad, and I can restore it.
Apple should really look into ensuring that folder doesn't go missing during itunes update process.
