  • I am in the market for a new HP Laptop.

I am in the market for a new HP Laptop seeing as how my current one is starting to die out on me. I am looking for one that would last me at least 3 or more years like my current has and i kinda have one i like in mind at this link:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-17-3-laptop-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/9769246.p?id=1219041359741&sk...
So my my main question is going to be this: Does Best buy match prices or beat them out if i find the same model cheaper and with a mail in rebate on another retailer's website such as office depot?
I am doing price comparisons right now, because i don't know how long my current HP Pavillion Entertainment PC will hold out. I have had it for 3 years and now my on board graphics chipset or the LCD Monitor one are starting to mess up on me and i had to replace the fan and battery almost 2 or 3 months ago and now this issue is popping up. It boots up with a green screen when i turn it on at the moment, but then after it has warmed up the screen clears back up like normal. So that is why i figured that it is about time for a newer model laptop and where my researching and price comparing will come in down the line.
If you have any other laptop suggestions for me to at least look at please tell me. I want at least 750 GB or 1 TB HDD and an Intel Core i5 or I7 Processor in these suggestions too, because i do heavy duty Video Editing and Processing for my website and for Video Game Video Walkthroughs and need not only the best Processor it can handle, but for website backups and for the space doing Webcam video recordings can handle too.
Thanks for any suggestions you may have and if the current one i have linked is worth my time in saving for please be so kind as if to let me know that as well. I don't care if it has a Touch Screen or not. But any suggestion for research is always welcome.

The RAM of my HP Pavillion Dv4-2164us model is currently 4, but it is starting to boot up with a green screen when I first start it. So I am thinking about going with the J020 Envy which is a 17 Screen display or I might go for this:
http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-touchsmart-17-3-touch-screen-laptop-8gb-memory-1tb-hard-drive/18203... if I go 4th gen Intel Core i7 Processor and Touch Screen
The next thing after I save up after getting whatever next Laptop I buy will be a Cooling Pad and an External HDD that I can put into one of the USB Ports or where ever you hook them up so that I can backup it up for a rainy day as they say.
The only reason why I am not opting for the becoming popular SSD is the Price tag to get the amount of space I would need is still out of my price range if I got one included. I have to be realistic and on budget as much as I don't want to be.
If I went 4th gen I5 I might get something like this:
    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/envy-17-3-laptop-8gb-memory-750gb-hard-drive/2354033.p?id=1219072210771&...
I would have shown a 15 screen laptop, but the CD/DVD Combo drive is not included in any of them. I would need one to back up my new laptop's OS and files the first week I use it to save from having to reformat or reinstall stuff if things even got messed up.
I have been thinking a lot about all of this not like it was a just now knowing this type of thing either. I have known for some time about that. Thanks for trying to help too.

  • ArchWiki: suggestion for a new page layout

Finally, I have some time to spare for ArchWiki improvement.
I have modified my article on CMYK support in The GIMP as an example.
Please take a look at it here:
    http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/CMY … n_The_GIMP
The code to produce the box on the right is here:
    {{sn|'''Article summary:'''
This article will show how to enable rudimentary CMYK support in The GIMP using the Separate plug-in, and explain how to use color proof filter to soft-proof your images.
It will also cover more general topics on CMYK colors and DTP.
    '''Required software:'''

    *[http://www.blackfiveservices.co.uk/separate.shtml Separate plugin source]

This is the best we can do with current ArchWiki setup. It would be even better if we could list categories in the box, as well as i18n links.

I've been tinkering with the templates. It's fixed now, I think.
Anyway, the templates used for the job can be seen from the code:

As you can see, it's a bit more typing than before, but it sure looks better. I might shorten the names for the templates. I wanted to make them memorable so they are a bit long.
As you can see, the problem of i18n links integration was fixed, so you can use existing i18n template and combine with the new "Article summary" set.
I will modify the article about writing summaries to include those templates and examples.
EDIT:   the i18n links in the article are just examples. Don't use them, since they lead to non-existing pages.
EDIT2: Okay, I've played around with the appearance of the summary box, but I'm at work now, so it's going nowhere. I'll play with it some more when I get home.

  • Need suggestions for a new printer with OS 10.9.5

I have a 2010 HP 6500 A Plus printer that has worked well with my iMac circa 2010. Printer is not feeding paper. It won't scan. Are there suggestions for a new compatible printer for OS 10.9.5.?

    Hey Debbisita,
Thanks for the question. It sounds like you are experiencing issues with your Printer and OS X. Before opting to purchase a new printer, you can try these troubleshooting steps to completely isolate the issue:
Troubleshooting printer issues in OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/ts3147
Follow these steps until the issue is addressed:
Make sure that the printer is powered on, has ink / toner, and that there are no alerts on the printer’s control panel. Note: If you cannot clear an alert on the printer's control panel, stop here and check the printer's documentation or contact the manufacturer for support.
Ensure the printer is properly connected to a USB port on the Mac or AirPort base station / Time Capsule. If the printer is a network-capable printer, make sure that it is properly connected to your home network.
Use Software Update to find and install the latest available updates. If an update is installed, see if the issue persists.
Open the Print & Scan pane or Print & Fax (Snow Leopard) pane in System Preferences.
Delete the affected printer, then add the printer again.
If the issue persists, try these additional steps:
Reset the printing system, then add the printer again.
If the issue still persists, reset the printing system again.  Download and install your printer's drivers. Then, add the printer again.
Contact the printer vendor or visit their website for further assistance.
    Thanks,
    Matt M.

  • New Lenovo laptop: Bluetooth enabled but never sees any devices.

Really nasty one this; Bluetooth working fine under Windows (urgh) but never sees any devices under Linux. No errors at all; it just never sees anything. The device is of this type:

I have tried the LTS kernel and get the same problem. I'm not sure what to try to debug it, TBH I can't find out what kernel module is driving it. The radio is definitely detected, powered on and unblocked:

I have another Lenovo laptop running a very similar install of Arch and this works fine. This has a different Bluetooth adaptor though, made by Intel with USB ID 8087:07da. If they're side-by-side I can pair a mouse and a phone to the other one, but nothing at all shows up on the one with the Realtek adaptor. Any help would be very much appreciated!
EDIT: Just tried this laptop with Ubuntu 14.04 and 12.04.5, didn't work with either. Same problem. Bearing in mind the two threads linked above are unanswered and this clearly hasn't broken recently, I guess this adaptor just doesn't work in Linux (yet). Looks like I'll be returning this one to the store, which is a shame as it took me months to find a 1080p laptop for a reasonable price.
EDIT: Unnecessary test but Fedora 20 behaves exactly the same. I'm not sure how many current laptops on the market use this chipset, but it looks like a lot of Lenovos do. I have a netbook with a Realtek SD card reader that stopped working in Linux due to some kernel modules being amalgamated, but it works again with the current kernel. I may just sit tight on this one.

I had similar issues, downgrading to bluez4 might help, but I found it was much more of a hassle.
I had the most success using vanilla bluetoothctl commands to pair with the device, then using dbus commands to register the bluetooth device as a network access point or see device capabilities.
Are you using a network manager? I found NetworkManager was unable to set up the access point due to an error with its dhcp client setup, but connman was able to do it. Or by issuing the right dbus command, I created the network device manually and then ran dhcpcd on it directly.

  • Any suggestion for a new sound card?

    Hello!
My old PC has left me alone, and I'm going to build a new one from scratch this month. I'll be running Win7, I doubt I'll be going for Win8.
As for the sound card, I'd need some advice on what to buy: I have always had SoundBlaster cards and have loved them all, so I think I'll go for a new SoundBlaster (not even taking into account the built-in sound card on the motherboard...), but I can't discern which one would fit me best. I mostly use MIDI and soundfonts for recording study bases for my choir to rehearse and for composing orchestral music: I usually need complex MIDI files with many voices and instruments to perform well.
My old sound card was an Audigy with (just?) 48 MIDI channels (45 free + 3 drum channels), I'd like to have some recent card with good Win7 drivers, but still with many MIDI channels and soundfont support.
The one thing I'm sure I won't be changing at this moment is my 5.1 analogic speaker system, so I need a card with 5.1/7.1 analogic connectors.
Any advice (or wise info on what not to buy) will be much appreciated, thank you all!!!

Thank you for your advice. Have you tested any soundfont bank manager? Regarding this same soundcard, the Creative helpdesk told me it does not come in bundle... I was suggested to try with this one: http://ccfiles.creative.com/manualdn/Applications/AVP/11113/0xCA3D54C2/SFBM_PCAPP_LB_3_21_02.exe (Creative Soundfont Bank Manager 3.21.02), but they also told me (copied from their email)
This Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is not bundled to the SoundBlaster Audigy Rx. You can try and test this but we do not officially claim that it will work.
Please note that the Creative SoundFont Bank Manager 3.21.02 is compatible with Microsoft Windows 7 64-bit or 32-bit, Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit or 32-bit with Service Pack 1, Windows XP Professional x64 Edition, Windows XP Service Pack 2, Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) 2005 or Windows XP MCE 2004.
For SoundBlaster Audigy Rx, it has synth a and synth b meaning 128/128 voices.
    No mention about Win8 compatibility...

  • Looking for suggestions for a new display: What size, resolution and refresh is recommended?

I've been using my laptop display, 15.6" and its just too small. I figured I'd purchase a display to plug into the laptop. I'd like suggestion on specs. I figured a 20 to 23 inch would work ok but I've seen some folks with dual screens. Lastly, I have no understanding of resoution, refresh rates to look for or brands to either look at or stay away from.
    Any help would be great.
    Thanks.

The good news is that you don't need to worry too much about the specs -- just about any monitor you purchase will be OK.  First choose a size that fits in you work area, then pick the monitor from that range of products that has the highest resolution and refresh rates -- the monitors will all have very similar specs.
    I've been using PCConnection
    http://www.pcconnection.com/
as my primary source for computer purchases for over 12 years and highly recommend it.  They have user's comments for most of their products, so you can get a feel for the satisfaction level of the products.
I've never understood the value of having dual monitors, unless one needs to have a couple of real-time monitoring apps open at the same time for instant feedback about the data....

  • Suggestion for a new name for this place

Using the term "Support" in Apple Support Communities makes people think they have Apple's ear here.
("This is the support website, right? My Mac Plus crashed after I installed all of Unsanity's Haxies. C'mon Apple!")
And lots of people aren't providing support or receiving support, anyway (e.g., this post). In fact lots of people are just blowing off steam or ranting and raving in some form or another.
Why not just call this joint: "Apple Communities"?
Yes, I embrace the irony in making this suggestion to the non-Apple audience.  But feel free to trash me anyway.
    charlie

Thanks for the Don Martin props. Glad to see someone recognized it. One of these days I'll get around to giving myself a present of the two volume "Completely Mad Don Martin." Too bad, I completely missed Captain Klutz. I don't think I was aware of Mad or Don Martin very much after the early '60's. I had all the fifties Mads, which my mother, in a fit of cleanliness, threw out when I went away to college. If I had them now, I could afford to buy that two volume set in a beat.
His characters are absolutely wonderful. I think the ony one who comes anywhere now to expressing that complete sense of lostness, derangement (the body gone totally awry) and befuddlement is Roz Chast in the New Yorker. (See the Ungooglable Man, below.) But Don Martin is still the gold standard in that department.
(I like your suggestons for names. Maybe we can use them all.)
