Suggestion for a Video Monitor For FCP

I am looking for a video monitor to use with FCP. The Sony PVM-14L2 13" has been recommended. Is anyone familiar with this monitor or do you have a monitor which is working well for you that you would recommend.
1) Should I be looking for anything key features not listed below?
2) Will I need any other hook ups to make this work with my system?
(Right now I am using a JVC SR-VS30U Dual Deck. A firewire from the computer to the deck and component from the deck to to t.v. the deck also has s-video)
3) When I move into High Definition will this monitor work?
Key Features of the Sony PVM-14L2 13"
Variety of Input Options
The monitor accepts composite, S-video, component and RGB signals standard without options. Serial Digital signals can be viewed with the optional
(with audio) or BKM-120D (without embedded audio). Even
, Sony's version of Fire Wire can be displayed with the optional BKM-155DV board.
Beam Current Feedback Feature
In studio environments, monitors tend to be left on for long periods. This practice leads to white-balance drift and unstable color reproduction. The Beam-Current Feedback circuit corrects for drift over long-term usage of the monitor.
Professional Set-up Features
Calibrating monitors assures that each display is showing correct colors which will match any other correctly calibrated display. The PVM-14L2 has set-up functions like Blue-Gun, H/V Delay, and selectable color temperature for these critical calibrations.

Sounds like a great choice as long as the size works for you. A small truly high-res monitor is much more useful than a big impressive soft one for analysis monitoring.
1) I don't think you need anything else unless the JVC thing doesn't work out. In that case you can try your camcorder, or a capture device such as ADS Pyro, Matrox MXO, or one of the Aja or Decklink cards. Depends...
2) JVC SR-VS30U - I don't know, there are a lot of devices that won't simply pass FireWire through, including many or most DVD recorders. Your best bet is to try it and monitor it on whatever you have.
If you're on NTSC you'll have to pay attention to the black setup. Many consumer digital devices these days won't put in the 7.5IRE setup for North America.
That's OK as long as you aren't using it to do analog conversions. If you can get FCP bars through the thing and set the monitor up properly to them, you should be OK. I'm sure the monitor can be set to 0IRE in menus if need be.
3) It won't show you an HD signal. If you're using the MXO it will give you a realtime SD downconvert to monitor. But that monitor won't display anything but NTSC and PAL. If it did I would probably say that 13" is too small.

    Anybody happy with thiers?

  • New computer and video monitors for HD and PP CS5.5

    Dear All,
I have recently updated to Adobe Creative Suite 5.5 Master Collection to work in conjuntion with Final Cut Pro.  I've been working with a Canon XL-1s, taping with mini-dv format in Standard Definition up to this time but am thinking of buying the Panasonic AG-AC160 AVCCAM and upgrading to High Definition.
I'm working on a Mac Pro and have been using a View Sonic computer monitor and a Sony Video Monitor that I've had for years -- left over from the old analog video tape days, but it still seems to do the job well.
I'm learning Premiere Pro CS5.5 and the suite seems to be working o.k., so that is not a problem at this time.
My question is:  If I start working in high definition, do I need to change my computer and video monitors in order to get professional results from my editing software?  I have done documentaries and want to do them in high def and have the best video for podcasts and mobile applications.
I don't want to spend another gazillion dollars on monitors if I don't have to, but I do want to provide the best video that I can and I will buy what I need.
Thanks for your suggestions and any info you can provide.

    Dear taz291819
Thanks for your help.  I have one more question.  Do I actually need two monitors or will the computer monitor serve as a video monitor?  I'm used to the old analog process of viewing the final video on a video monitor, but with HD, I would think that the computer monitor would give the same result as a separate video monitor.  My ViewSonic would work, I'm sure, but it's a bit small for the HD format and I would like a bigger screen to work on.  So, can I just use the computer monitor for editing and viewing the final product?
For Harm Millaard, I just think that HD will produce a better final product in small formats viewed as podcasts or on mobile phones -- plus almost everyone wants everything in HD now, and for some of the things I will be doing, it will undoubtedly give a better product.  I want to upgrade my camera anyway, so I want to go to HD.

  • Seperate Video Monitor for Final Cut Express HD 3.5

Hey guys. I was just wondering if it was possible for me to connect my iMac Intel to a seperate video monitor. The thing is--I know you could possibly connect a dvi to composite or s-video adapter and walla...have a mirror of your desktop right there on your sony trinitron. But here's the thing. I want JUST the Viewer from Final Cut Express to be playing through it. Basically...I want my tv to be my viewer. Back when I was in school learning this stuff I remember all the setups I used had a little broadcast quality monitor connected, and ONLY the viewer window would be playing through it. Now I didn't use Final Cut then. I used something called Media 100. But the computers we used were like at least 10 year old powermacs. I dunno. I just have always wanted to copy that setup with my own computer. It was soo much nicer to edit on. I figured after this many years the newer macs would allow that sort of setup to be had a lot easier. Thanks for your time you guys.
    Branden

It goes this way: Firewire out>camera (aka A/DV coverter)>S-VHS (or composite) to NTSC monitor. The audio goes line out from the A/DV converter to speakers.
Hook everything up when the computer is off.
Turn on the camera, monitor and speakers
    Turn on the computer
    Launch final cut
it the image does not automatically show up on the external monitor
    go to View>Refresh A/V Devices
    then
    Set View>Video Playback>Apple Firewire
    Set View>External Video>All frames
    Set View>Audio Playback>Audio follows video
all should be happy. there is probably a big section in your user manual about this stuff.
    good luck.

  • Is 1080p enough for 27" ext. monitor for MBA 2013?

    Hi Apple forums,
So, I was looking for an external monitor to use with my Macbook Air 2013 (Base model, 256gb ssd)
Basically, I'm really hesitant between 2 monitors: The Asus MX239H and MX279H. As the name suggests, one of them is a 23 inch monitor, and the other one 27. The remaining specs are the same between the 2 monitors, and there is about a 80€ price difference. (About 100 USD).
Now, I'm this hesitant as I don't know how 1080p resolution on 27" monitor would look, as it surely won't be as sharp as the 23". The monitor is going to be used for a variety of tasks:
    - With my 2013 MBA, mainly for browsing, document editing, video streaming.
    - With a Windows laptop from work (This isn't all too relevant, it's just going to be a VGA connection, doesn't have to look great)
    - Potential future gaming with Xbox One or PS4.
Does anyone have a 1080p 27inch monitor? Does the ppi look bad? Is text really disturbing to read as some people on forums suggest?
I'd say I'm sitting about 50cm / 1.6 feet at distance from the monitor.
Any suggestions or opinions would be great.
    Thanks!
    Cihad

I actualy recently got a new 2013 IMAC and I am finishing up editing a 6 Camera multiclip project. I bought the 27" because it was the only one that comes with the 3.5 GHz I7 chip which Compressor and Final Cut can activate its multiicores and on board Intel graphics.  I have the top graphics (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 780M 4096 MB) & the 1 TB flash internal storage (realize, it is not a SSd drive bogged down by Sata constraints, it is PCIe)-  it is rediculous fast. Over 768 MB/sec. BOTH read & write of 5 Gig files in BM test. I have 16 gigs of Ram but can upgrade anytime on the 27". The 21" is sealed & I reason will run hotter.
More to the point, this 6 camera shoot of 2 one hour sets of a rock band performance shot and editied natively - Sony XDCAM. I am doing edits of each song but leave the One hour of synced clips on the timeline while I add effects, titles, etc. then "select" and "share" each song --- Not a hiccup.  I am so glad that I didn't get any less of a machine. The hottest it has ever gotten (150 F) is when transcoding. Using Compressor, Final Cut or even MPeg Streamclip makes it work but it is still very very fast.
I got a Lacie 10 TB 5 Big Thunderbolt raid array. In Raid 0, it reads & writes at over 700 MB/sec as well.
I have had several computers since 1989 -- both PC & Mac.  This Imac is perfect for Final Cut X.
I highly advise to not skimp. Technolgy moves too fast. Just do it.

  • Select the approval Agent for Modeled Deadline Monitoring for WF WS14000133

I have setup a deadline monitoring for WF WS14000133 using the modeled approach and added the "Send Mail" Test along with a Loop so that the the appover will get an email every day after three days of not approving a shopping cart.
I noticed in task "109 Subworkflow n-step over Value" there is a task container element "&APPROVALAGENTS.ACT_AGENT&" which contains the approver. I am tring to put it in a Workflow container element that I created referencing "WFSYST-AGENT". When I try to setup a binding to import the value from the task container to the workflow container I get the following error:
"Data object 'APPROVALAGENTS' is elementary )component 'ACT_AGENT' does not exist)
Does anyone know how to fix this or does anyone know another way I can get the approval agent to the WF container so that I can send the email to them in the "send email" step?
According to SAP this can be done....this is what they say on help.sap.com:
"Actual agent: Element WIActual_Agent in the task container
If you want to transfer the actual agent of a work item (available under the element ID WIActual_Agent in the task container) to the workflow container for further use, you define an appropriate element in the workflow container to contain this information.
You create this element with a reference to the ABAP Dictionary field WFSYST-AGENT."
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw2004s/helpdata/en/c5/e4b06d453d11d189430000e829fbbd/frameset.htm

    hi ,
the field actual agent gets will filled once the responsible agent completes / performs an action on it. Hence it is suggested to use some method / rule to get the responsible agent and create one local workflow container variable (table) to fill up the agents instead of manipulating the workflow variables directly.
In this way, you can check if the table of agents and then send accordingly the deadline messages.
    Hope this helps.

  • What is the maximum resolution for an external monitor for a 13" BMP

I have a new MBP 13 and a new Samsung LED 23" monitor that is spec'd at 1920x1080 resolution. However the maximum resolution I can get (using Display) for the external monitor is 1600x900 (or 1600x1200 stretched). What could be causing this limitation?

Are you guys able to resolve the issue with the Samsung HDTV LCD monitor? I just bought the Samsung B2230HD but having some image issue. I am connecting to the LCD from my macbook pro using Mini Display Port -> DVI -> HDMI but the image on the LCD is very grainy where the text is not sharp at all. The mac is able to detect the correct resolution of 1920x1080 though

  • 2 incompatible file formats for a video project in FCP HD Academic?

Hi, I have Final Cut Pro HD Academic.  I'm working on a video shot with 2 different types of cameras, one with a memory card, one with a tape.  The files shot with the memory card camera are letterboxed and the ones shot on tape are not.  Both files seem to be almost identical when you look at the specs.  I'd like to figure out how to make the files either all letterboxed or all fill the screen, but not a mix of both.  Any suggestions? Here are what the files look like:

You have a choice - either enlarge the letterbosed clips to fill the 4:3 screen (by using the scaling control for the clip). This enlargement will degrade the image, OR, on the clips that are not letterboxed, go to Effects > Matte > Widescreen and apply the Widescreen filter to the clip on the timeline. This will make the 4:3 full screen video appear letterboxed. You will loose some of the screen image when you do so, as it will be covered by the black bars of letterboxing.
    Your choice.

  • Need advice for a new monitor for Mac Centris 610

I have a Mac Centris 610. The Apple monitor(display unit) that originally came with it finally died. Would this old Mac be able to use a new flat-screen computer monitor? How can I find out what newer monitors wouldbe compatible with this old "war horse" computer. I use it for one application only, but it still works great for this. Many thanks to anyone who can rescue me from my predicament!

You can't use a new flat-screen display, because they have a widescreen aspect ratio (16:9) and that isn't supported by the Centris' onboard graphics.  The Centris doesn't have PCI slots, so that eliminates that option.  You could check thrift stores or computer recyclers in your area for an older display.  You might have success using a Mac-to-VGA adapter having a set of adjustable DIP switches.  It plugs into the Mac DB-15 display port on the back of the Centris and enables you to connect an older, multi-sync CRT display (4:3 aspect ratio) having a PC-style VGA connector.
From the specs posted at EveryMac.com for the Centris 610:
"By default, the Macintosh Centris 610 only supports a single display, but a second one can be supported with the addition of a compatible PDS or NuBus video card. With the standard VRAM, the system is capable of supporting 512x384 at 16-bit color and 640x480, 800x600 and 832x624 at 8-bit color. With 1 MB of VRAM installed, it can support 640x480, 800x600 and 832x624 at 16-bit color and 832x624, 1024x768 and 1152x870 at 8-bit color."

  • Video drivers for intel video adapter for windows 8

any advice on when HP might release an Intel video chip driver for Windows 8

Right now, we are qualifiying drivers for recent notebook models. Shortly after the launch of Windows 8, you'll be able to find drivers for those models as well, on HP.com.
For more information, take a look at this page: http://hp.com/go/windows8
In the meantime, Windows 8 should automatically detect and install an appropriate driver for your Intel video processor. It's hard to say, since I do not know which Intel video processor model you have, or which HP notebook you have. But more often than not, it'll work automatically.

  • Best bang-for-buck video card for hi-end Photoshop work..?

When I bought my rig 3 or 4 years ago, I was told that when it comes to 2D performance, all modern video cards are created equal. That the price differences really only affect the 3D side of things.
So I bought a NVIDIA GeForce GT 240.
Why this thing has a fan, I have no idea. Like I said, even when I bought it it was considered "bottom-of-the-heap". Anyhoo, long story short, the fan died on me a couple of days ago. I can now keep the card from overheating through a house fan pointed at the open case. Naturally, I can't keep this going forever. I need to buy a new card.
The good news is that I don't need ANY 3D performance (unless vector logos count). I only use my computer for hi-res Photoshop work (at 1920x1200+ resolution with PSD files that sometimes reach 5 or 6GB) and full-screen video playback. No games are being played on this rig whatsoever.
The bad news, however, is that money is an issue. I can't just go buy the latest $300 card, especially not to put on a 3 or 4 year old rig. The Core i7 920 CPU and 10GB of ram (on Windows 7 64) will keep me going for a couple of years more, but I don't expect to still be using this rig much further beyond that.
I just want to keep using my Adobe suite and play movies in hi-res on this thing. That's it.
I've been told to look into the NVIDIA Quadro series, but that appears to me out of my price range. I'd like to keep it under $150. Or even $100 if at all possible. Other cards quoted to me are the GT630 and R7-250 (which is apparently a rebranded Radeon HD 7770).
What would you guys recommend that would be the best bang for my buck in this scenario? I'd hope most of today's cards - even the cheapest ones - are at least a step up from the NVIDIA GeForce GT 240. Right?
    If anyone has any advice...

    Trevor Dennis wrote:
There was an article on Tom's Hardware yesterday, announcing that nVidia are stopping driver support for it's older cards.
    http://www.tomshardware.com/news/nvidia-eol-graphics-card,26304.html
This goes back to the 300 range and earlier cards, but also includes the Geforce 405 from the 400 range.
Be that as it may, my GT 240 is still being listed as supported in last week's 335.23 driver release. And that's the driver that fried it. This "1 driver for all our cards" thing is really for the birds. There's no way for product owners to know what the latest, safest driver for their card is. I don't think NVIDIA thought this thing through when they announced they'd be going with a "single driver for all" model.
I don't think NVIDIA realizes what a huge potential lawsuit could be headed their way from other owners like myself (but not me, I'm not very letigious) who saw their cards get physically damaged by drivers that were supposed to be compatible with them.
I see you recommending I stay under $100, which was my original plan, but then you said I should definitely get a Quadro. When I checked, Quadro cards were more expensive than the GeForce line. Did I misunderstand? Were you saying NOT to touch the Quadros?
On other forums, they tell me to push for the new GTX 750, swearing its 2D performance makes it worth the price, despite the fact that it's clearly a GAMING card, and I don't game.
    I'm so confused.

  • I may have a solution for choppy video playback for iTunes Windows users

    My setup:
    - Intel NUC (i5)
    - 8gb memory
    - Intel 5000 Graphics with 1GB memory (share of system memeory)
    - iTunes 12
    - iTunes library on NAS via GigaLan
Had problems with very choppy and freezing HD video playback in iTunes and tried everything... Every other player works fine.
    1. downgrade audio playback
    2. played with Quicktime settings
However, I think I might have a workaround. You need to do the following,
    1. Install Quicktime 7
    2. Install iTunes
    3. Download ffdshow (Sep 2014 version) and install the codecs: pretty much leaving all do default
    4. Set audio quality in Sound and Quicktime options in control panel, and iTunes to 16bit 48k
    5. In advanced options of Quicktime in control panel, deselect "Direct 3D" & "Enable directdraw on seondary display", ONLY tick "enable directdraw accerleration"
Well, at least this works for me for now.
    HOWEVER!!!
@Apple! You need to address this issue once for all, I can't believe there is no solution. As a paying customer who buy quite a few of your movies in iTunes, I expect to have a harssell free experience. Consumers should NOT have to go through all these troubles trying to fix a product you have released and making billions out of.
Reason why I switched from Android to Apple for my phones and tablets is becasue of the seamless user experience, regretfully I have to admit, this advantage is quickly going away. The amount of glitches in your recent ios updates and itunes are simply unacceptable.

Downloading videos on 7.0.2 hasn't worked as well as everyone had hoped. I still can't get mine to work, but i do know a few people who haven't had trouble with the newer itunes.
