Suggestion for mailing list software.

Dear members:
I have been looking for a good application for mailing lists. I wish to create a few internet discussion groups and would like to have them set-up as mailing lists with posts distributed to all members in the form of e-mails.
So far the only I've found that seems up-to-date and reasonably powerful is Listserv from L-Soft (www.lsoft.com). This one, however, is rather expensive (really expensive), requires installation to be done using the terminal with Unix commands (which I don't master) and does not offer a Mac GUI (the program is controlled and maintained using a browser).
I am interested in an application that uses the familiar mac interface (GUI) and can be both installed and run using as a typical mac application. Also I would like to find something that is reasonably priced.
Would anyone be able to offer suggestions on what may be a good application for this purpose ?
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance,
Joseph Chamberlain

Hi, Tom.
Please forgive me for the delayed response to your post and thank you for giving me some suggestions.
I looked at the page you referenced on your post and found that the only three list server applications listed don't really offer the features I am looking for.
Letterrip hasn't been developed since early 2006 which means it is quite likely that it would not run properly under the latest version of OS X.
Macjordomo is in the same category of outdated software. The latest version available runs on OS X but the entire interface has that OS 9 classic design as something that hasn't been really updated in a long time. As I tried to run it all it did was to keep crashing. The GUI is also deficient and not you typical Mac application user interface.
Last but not least Mailman seems to be one of the strongest one of the group and I had heard of it before. The only problem I have found is its lack of a Mac front end user interface that follows the typical Mac guidelines. I don't have any type of experience with Unix and would not be able to install any applications that require interaction with the Terminal.
As popular as the Mac is today I find it difficult to believe that there isn't at least one good list server application in the market today. I probably haven't found it yet but I am hoping that one exists so that I can find it.
Please let me know if you have any other ideas or suggestions.
Thanks again for your help,
Joseph

  • *help* Subscription is not working for mailing lists

    Hi,
As the subscription function is only available for one e-mail, i tried adding a mailing list for the daily subscription report.
But i am not able to receive any report.
Can some one suggest a work-around.
    Regards,
    Sunny

So your report sends a email to the mailing list and the list knows what to do with the attached file??
Just confirming it is NOT a mailing list issue..

  • Using mail for mailing lists???

As Mail has a limitation of sending a single message to a maximum of 100 recipients, what program would you recommend for larger mailing lists please?

Mail has no limits. but the email provider does.
    Who is your email provider?

  • Suggestion for new Forum - Software Quality Assurance & Testing

Hi - I'm active in ASUG and a SIG Chair for Software Quality Assurance SIG.  I'm new to SDN and looked around a bit for where topics related to Software QA, Testing, Test tools & methodologies, etc. would be posted and discussed.  I haven't found any relevant forums.  A couple postings on SAP TAO (test tool) landed in the Solution Manager forum... looks like they were searching for a relevant home too.
We have good content and discussions on these topics on asug.com and I'd like to facilitate bringing some of these topics to the larger SDN community.  I started a blog, we sponsor webinars, etc.  What would you think of having a forum on SDN called Software Quality Assurance & Testing?  Or are there other suggestions for where I would start discussing this?  Maybe the forum's out there already but I just can't find it?
    Thanks!

    Count me in!
Currently the security aspects of good software development don't have a real home either, and are distributed over SCN in a rather thin and adhoc fasion by a few folks.
I am sure that such a forum would attract a lot of new attention to SCN on the customer side, as it is important for them.
It would also be irrefutable that the SCN Rules of Engagement are applied strictly to such a forum
    Cheers and good idea!

  • Spotlight searching for mailing list archives

I need to make spotlight searches available for individual Mailman/Pipermail mailing lists' web archives. How can I do it? So far, the only way I've found is to make a copy of the mailing list's web archives somewhere inside a web site's hierarchy, then add indexing for it with the mdimport -f command. Simply using a symbolic link to a mailing list archve folder in /private/var/mailman/archives/private doesn't work. I don't want to keep a separate copy of the mailing list archives just so that I can have one that's spotlight searchable.
      Mac OS X (10.4.6)

I can browse to the iPhoto Library in the Open dialogues from other apps. For some apps (eg Safari, Word), I can see the iPhoto Library, but it is greyed out
That's not what I mean. You're browsing to the Library, I mean +browse the contents of the Library+...
For instance: Consider the Open... Dialogue
On the left there's a Media heading, the contents of your Library can be accessed there.
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
(Note the above illustration is not a Finder Window. It's the dialogue you get when you go File -> Open)
Is your Library available there? And in other Media Broswers in Pages, iMovie etc?

  • Capturing visitors email address for mailing list

I would like to know if there is a way I can get a widget or something to create a "sign up for our mailing list" or something to capture email address in order to enter site.
Do I have to use a different web design program, like wordpress?

You either can use a free form service such as [wufoo|http://wufoo.com> or create your own form.
    Here's how I do it : [Urgent message|http://dailynews.webege.com/forms/Message.html]
    Here's the tut : [Mailform with Captcha|http://www.wyodor.net/blog/archives/2010/01/entry_301.html]

  • Facebook Module for Mailing List?

    Hello,
I'd like to created a tab on our Facebook Fan page to allow our fans to easily subscribe to our mailing list (much like Constant Contact, MailChimp, etc offer). I can't find any way to do this with Business Catalyst. Is this offered? Or is there a work-around?
    Thank you!

Have you one saved email per individual, or several emails per individual? Are the individual's email addresses in the headers of the email, or buried in the body? Can you post a sample (edit it to suppress the actual addresses)? Are all the emails in a single mailbox? Are there emails in the mailbox that are not from the list?

  • Is there a way to up forward a suggestion for the next software update?

I had my iphone stolen the other night and I was just wondering if we can put forward a suggestion towards the next software update.
I've been thinking that you should only be able to turn the phone off if the phone is unlocked (if there is a passcode lock then you should have to enter this before being able to turn the phone off)
If a phone is stolen the first thing people do is turn the phone off, but if this isn't so easy to do then people may still be able to find their phone using the find my iphone app which can only be used when phone is on
    Hop someone can help, thanks

  • Mail list software for iMac (10.6.8)

I have to mail notices to about 60 members of a group. What software do people use to do this? (To/Cc/Bcc lists have to be less than 256 characters, so using Apple Mail groups doesn't work; cut/paste of body then subject then To address 60 times in a row is ridiculous.)

Several threads say the problem is the mail provider (gmail, Earthlink, etc) not Mail, which is technically unlimited. There is a lot of info in the Snow Leopard (your OS) forum- go there https://discussions.apple.com/community/mac_os/mac_os_x_v10.6_snow_leopard and choose Refine This List and select "Mail and Address Book" and do a search for max recipients or similar wording.

  • Suggestions for anti-virus softwares?

    Hi everyone,
I recently brought a Macbook Pro and is preparing to set it up with different softwares. Right now, I am still not sure which anti-virus software I should use for the macbook pro. I have read online articles recommending Norton, Intego, and McAfee.
Can anyone please give me some suggestions or pros & cons to which anti-virus software I should use?
    Thanks everyone!

XProtect works with all applications that set the "quarantine" attribute on downloaded files.
I'm not questioning your expertise, but how exactly do you know that? I'd definitely like to read more about it, and especially the "'quarantine' attribute".
It may not be something Apple publishes in its ads, but it's documented in Apple's developer documentation.  See (search these documents for "quarantine"):
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#releasenotes/MacOSX/WhatsNewInOSX/Articl es/MacOSX10_5.html
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/#releasenotes/Carbon/RN-LaunchServices/_i ndex.html#//apple_ref/doc/uid/TP40001369
    http://developer.apple.com/library/mac/documentation/General/Reference/InfoPlist KeyReference/InfoPlistKeyReference.pdf
Apple is, as usual, a bit tight-lipped about XProtect, but I can assure you that XProtect's action is tied directly to the quarantine system.  I have verified this through testing with a collection of malware.  If the quarantine attribute is set on a piece of malware, trying to open it triggers an XProtect warning.  If the quarantine attribute is not set, you can open it freely, with no warning.
That includes all built-in Aqua applications
By "built-in" I assume you mean Apple apps bundled with the OS. (Just making sure.)
    That is correct.
other popular web browsers and mail clients.
And what if I'd like to use an unpopular browser?
You might not be a believer in popularity, but if a browser does not implement this feature as Apple has recommended to all developers, you'd be wise to avoid it, as they've dropped the ball.  If a browser developer drops an easy ball like this, there are likely to be many other balls on the floor that you haven't seen.
How exactly do I find out if it's on 'the list'?
Carolyn posted a link to my Mac Malware Guide earlier...  if you read that, it'll tell you.  Basically, if you've got a question as to whether a browser or other file downloader complies with Apple's developer guidelines on this topic, just download a known good app from a known good site.  If you can then open that app without a warning, saying the app was downloaded and asking if you're sure you want to open it, then that downloader is unsafe.  (Of course, if you have disabled those quarantine warnings, this test does not apply, but that doesn't matter as you've pretty thoroughly turned off all the built-in malware protection anyway.)
And why is this 'list' such a secret, anyway?
There's really no secret involved, it's just a feature that most apps implement (since it's easy to do) and few users care whether it's there or not.  It's not talked about, but it's no secret, in the same way that you probably never think or talk about the catalytic converter in your car.

  • Suggestions for Application Monitoring Software

Can anyone suggest software that will monitor applications to determine if they have crashed, and relaunch them if they have?
I can't use Apple's Server Monitor as my server is a desktop Mac. We have an obscure app called iCalPublish that combines iCal .ics calendars and republishes it as one calendar. At least once a day it stops working with an error message requiring me to quit and relaunch. I wish I could find a replacement for iCalPublish but it seems the only app that combines calendars and it does it very well.

I'd like to try something else please. The reason is as follows:
When I put in a name for the document and then scan the documents, the file still comes up as untitled. I don't get that.
When I want to rotate a page that is supposed to be landscape and do the rotation in Image Capture, all it does is cut the top and bottom out--it rotates the selection, not the image. I know I can do this in a PDF editor but why not have everything I need done in one application?
When I do want to select A4 size, I don't see it unless I hide details. Seems a bit strange.
    Thanks,
    Tony
Are you scanning into a program, or to a file? Either way, it seems to work for me with Preview. I didn’t try another app.
I can’t replicate your other problems, either. Rotation works as expected and I have both Letter and A4 available on both interfaces.
I have an Epson all-in-one, though.
Perhaps if you listed your HP model number, others with that same printer/scanner could help.
One thing to try, though. Log into another user on the Mac and try to scan. Same results?
Boot into Safe Mode and try to scan. Same results?
OS X: What is Safe Boot, Safe Mode?
Those two steps will see if the problem is system-wide or caused by some additional software you have running at startup.

  • Suggestions for Image montage software needed

    Hi,
I am in need of come cool image montage software that can handle a few hundred images. I have checked out Core Melt's ImageFlow (fx) and while that is ok, it isn't as dynamic as I would like. For 99 bucks, there are only one or two of their styles that I think are ok. I am looking for something more original, could be 3D or not.
Any and all suggestions would be helpful.
    thanks
    ari

yeah, sure I could do it myself, but literally I have nearly 1000 photos and even though I could batch some stuff, either in AE or FCP, (or motion, actually) I don't have the time. Core melt's deal is simply point to a folder of pics, real time rendering, set the temp and go. Done in as long as it takes to render the movie out to a non self contained file, then compressed to a m2v.
    no worries.
    thanks for the help

  • Monitor suggestions for Christmas list

I have been using a pair of JBL2600 bookshelf speakers for my monitors. They are OK, but I'd like to get some nice studio monitors in the under $500 range, preferably in the $350-400 range. I am looking for a nice tight bass response. The JBLs I have offer 60Hz - 23kHz. I am told the listed Frequency Response for monitors is not always across the board, so I am now confused. I see the Alesis M1 Active 620 boasts 38Hz - 23.5kHz, but the sales associate assigned to me at Sweetwater suggests the Event ALP 5 which shows 53Hz - 20kHz. I have nowhere locally that I can go and check them out for myself. Can anyone here offer some advice to pander?

I wouldn't pay any attention to specs in this spectrum of the marketplace, as I don't think (given your budget) that you'll get anything that'll deliver real low-ish bass response.
Maybe wait until you could afford some Mackie HR 624 or (even better) HR 824's. Both have great, tight, bass IMO, but I listen and work with rock music, so your mileage may vary, depending on the music you work with.
Within your budget, I have heard KRK Rokits and Wharfedale 5" Diamonds which were nice.
    This might help:
    http://www.tweakheadz.com/studio_monitors.htm
which contains one of my favorite lines: ...This brings us to Tweak's Law, which says, whatever your monitors are good at is exactly what your mix will be bad at...
Finally, can't you spend some time auditioning monitors somewhere near you with your own material? Monitors are such a personal choice that it's really hard to decide without listening to a bunch of them. If you're located too far from a dealer, at least Sweetwater probably gives you a 30-day return, so you could order 3 or 4 different models and send the least impressive back before you have to pay your credit card bill!

This will allow you to have a better idea of what I am looking for and maybe you can suggest a replacement product.
    You might look at LetterRip:
    http://www.letterrip.com/index.html
I don't know anything about it, except that it may (or may not) be free, since it's no longer for sale, but it is available for download.
I found that on this page:
    http://www.emailman.com/mac/mailinglist.html
Which might give you some more stuff to look through.
A quick glance through that page reveals a lot of software that hasn't been updated in a while. I think what you're going to find is that, since OS X is now a first class Unix citizen, a lot of companies that built software like that found that their market dried up. They probably found their customers moving to listserv, majordomo, and EZmlm, which, as you've found, require extensive Terminal work and Unix know-how to install.
