Suggestion for next version of Time Machine

It would be really nice if the Time Machine drop-down menu had an option "Eject Time Machine Disk" I use time machine whenever I set my laptop down on the desk. Every time I take my laptop away I have to go to the finder and manually eject the disk. I probably do this 3 times a day.
So if you know any developers on Time Machine, please pass this suggestion along to them. Thank you.

  • How to handle security with Auto-Versions and Time Machine?

I've upgraded to OS X Lion, which of course now has the new automatic "versions" system.
Today, I created a text file in TextEdit, containing highly sensitive data that I must keep absolutely secure (well, you know -- as best I can.) The file was eventually copied to an encrypted sparse disk image (.dmg) and the original on my desktop deleted trashed and emptied.
But before that happened, Lion had already saved two copies of the file through the new versions sytem --and-- one copy in regular old Time Machine! So much for keeping the file secure. (OK -- not "copies" but delta data. Whatever. )
EDIT: OK ... I found how to "Delete all backups ..." from within Time Machine. (I feel silly for not finding that before!) But the real question here relates to manual and auto-save versions from the likes of TextEdit and any residual data that may leave lying around, despite the file seemingly having been deleted.
My questions should now be fairly obvious ...
Does "Delete all backups" from within TimeMachine also delete all data from the "versions" system? One would assume so. But I don't like to assume.
Can one somehow pre-emptively flag a file to not be recorded by versions or Time Machine?
Someone in some post noted that a file could be "locked" to prevent these issues altogether. But I can find no informtaion about such a thing, either by further googling or poking around in menus locally.
EDIT: Good grief! You spend ages trying to find something, then you post on here and it magically appears. You can click the title bar of TextEdit to produce a pull-down (that's new!), which shows an option to "Lock".
So this one is just about answered by myself -- except for the part about whether "version delta" info is also removed when "Delete all backups" is used from within Time Machine.
Any help will be much appreciated. Thanks.
    Bryan.

If you're dealing with highly sensitive data, you should enable FileVault on your primary and backup volumes. That's the only way to ensure that all copies of your files will always be encrypted. Needless to say, you have to be very sure you won't lose the password. Optionally, you can store an alternate decryption key on Apple's servers, but then you have to trust Apple.
That said, in my opinion it's too soon after the release of Lion to trust FileVault completely.

  • In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. How I can disable it?

Hello, In Lion 10.7.x I cannot disable the Lock documents for 2 weeks in Time Machine! Thus it prevents to change anything else like the system preferences or other settings. All is locked. How I can disable it?

Do you mean the check box isn't enabled?
Or you remove the check but it doesn't "stick"?
Or you remove the box but documents are stil getting locked?
That setting doesn't apply to other things in System Preferences, just apps that support AutoSave and Versions.  If you're having a problem with System Prefs, please clarify exactly what.

  • Nokia C3-01, suggestions for next S/W update

I am using Nokia C3-01 from 2 weeks. It is nice phone with touch and type combination. I would like to add some suggestions for next software update.
    1.   Brightness control
    2.  When writing a text message, tapping # change only alphabet from capital to lower case, but missing numeric. I have to press 3-4 times to write numeric in text. Also have no 'option' to insert numeric. If I change other language (not English, which is automatic), then I can get numeric by tapping #. Nokia, please care it for next firmware update.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

You can do a long press on the keys to get the numeric value instead of pressing it three to four times. This works for all Nokia since years, if they have keys
Or do a long press on the # key. This gives you the option to activate numeric input. Also a quite old feature for Nokia phones.

  • My WishList  of features for next Version

    Hi Team,
As  Developer I really love Catalyst,It does complete my FlashBuilder development experience  all the way, but still  I would like to share some of my wishes on features that could be nice to have  for next Version:
    1) Build but dont automatically open new Browser, (currently everytime I want to test a change I have to ctr+enter it and it opens new instance of IE, even though url is the same, would be nice just to build it and I could refresh my IE (saves some memory on IE instances) or maybe there is already a way to do it?
    2) ability to copy some Layers from one Buttons state to another buttons state, for example I designed a button component and now I want to copy some of the
    layers to Toggle button component.
the way I did it was following
I copied my finished button and then I right clicked and selected "Revert Component to Artwork" and then I selected all artwork parts and did convert to component -> toggle button, but this way it only copied layers that I have initially creted for the button and not the layers that I have added in buttons over state.
thats it so far, everyhing else seems great.

    You're welcome.
It will certainly be interesting to that device if it included all that hardware, and options.
    It might look like this

  • How do I restore an adjusted version from Time Machine?

    I use time machine.
How do I restore an adjusted version?
E.g. I take a 1000 pix, bring them into a project, spend a few days making adjustments.
    Client cancels project.
    I delete project.
Month later I figure out a new market for that project.  (Yeah, I shouldn't have been so quick to delete...Work with me)
I can restore the masters from Time Machine. (I use referenced images)
How do I recover my adjustments, without overwriting my library?  Groveling through the .aplibrary they are stored as xml files, but there is a chane of references and set of encoding that is not transparent.
At this point the ONLY way I can see is to:
    *  Rename my present library
    *  Restore the entire library, whcih if I have lots of images can take hours.
    *  Find the project.
    *  Export the project.
    *  Delete extra library.
    *  Rename my original library.
While this gets my adjustments back, it does NOT get them back in an editable form.  they are now locked in.
Is there a way to export versions as version info?  E.g. as an xml file that sits in the same directory as the master?
Spin the question differently.  How can I send YOU a set of versions of a particular master, WITHOUT copying the data of the master for each version.
Say we have referenced files on a network server.  I want to send you a version, but NOT the master.
E.g.  I send you ONE master, and 6 versions of it.  In YOUR version of aperture how can you load the 6 versions to continue tweeking them.

There is another, huge thread on TM backups on this forum and exactly this issue has come up. Sadly, no one has a perfect answer. I do not have a spare drive available to test this myself, but I would try something along these lines.
-- Ask TM to restore your full Library and the Masters, if Referenced. I believe that TM will give you the option to not overwriting your current Library, but be careful. However you do, stick this "Recovery Library" out somewhere. (Yes, this is gonna take some time, run it overnight.)
-- Open "Recovery" with Aperture and select the Project(s) that contain the images you want. Export these "Projects as New Library."  (Don't export as either Versions or Masters.) I would select the box "Consolidate Masters" and I would probably discard the Previews. Stick this somewhere.
-- Now open "Original Library" and import the "Library" that you exported back into your Original Library as something like "Stupid Lost Project."
-- You should now have a Project full of adjusted, and adjustable images. (N.B. this is basically the technique I use with my laptop. I shoot, load into AP3 on the laptop, noodle, and then export/import into AP3 on the MacPro when I get home.)
-- Clean up. (Delete "Recovery", convert the recovered Project back to Referenced Masters, if you wish, etc.)
One good argument for never throwing those old USB drives away.
I have missed some of the details in the process, so be careful, but I believe that this will work until Apple lets us run Aperture inside Time Machine.
    Best wishes.

  • Partitioning Hard Drive for Use with Mac (Time Machine) and Windows

I have a brand new Imac on which I am also running WIndows Vista through Boot Camp (sweet, by the way). I have a large external hard drive on which I set up Time Machine easily enough. I would like to partition the drive somehow so that I could use half the drive to separately back up files on the WIndows side, but I can't seem to do this. Any suggestions? Is this even possible with Time Machine?

You can use Disk Utility create two partitions. Choose FAT for the Windows partition and Mac Extended (Journaled) for the Mac. One limitation of FAT32 is that you can't write files bigger than 4GB. You can reformat this partition as NTFS within Vista which will allow bigger file sizes but you won't be able to write to this partition from within OS X without other utilities. Also you can't write to the OS X partition from Vista without other software.
Time Machine will not be able to back up the windows formatted drive partition.

  • Message to RIM - wish list for next version

    Hi
Just some thoughts based on a couple of days of use of a playbook that my IT folks lent me.
Firstly, hopefully RIM will realize that the only way this will take off is if Enterprise users really buy into it but the device lacks in certain areas if it is to be a WorkBook instead of a PlayBook (which other tablets do a better job at) as follows:
    - no way to adjust font size or zoom in the Messages in the BlackBerry bridge - if the higher ups in corporate can't read their messages, they won't buy.
    - even though typing e-mails show you spelling errors w a red underline - there is no way to correct, while in your BBerry, you can call up spelling correction options.  (The same for the other bridge apps, like memos etc, as well).
    - very difficult to edit messages, the touch screen is not sensitive enough so its difficult to place the cursor to exactly to the point you need it in text you have already typed.  Suggest an optical track ball (similar to the ones in the 9700s) or a stylus be incorporated into the next version.
    - even if you are able to get the cursor to the spot you want it in a draft e-mail/memos you can't highlight to cut or copy text to other parts of the e-mail/memo draft.
    - can't view attachments that are part of the calendar entries - but you can on the BBerry itself.
Think that's it after 2 days of using.  Needless to say, am disappointed as the PlayBook doesn't increase productivity and is lacking in key areas that are part of what makes BBerry a strong product.  I wouldn't buy with my personal funds and think the corporate will not roll out as aggressively as it could the cost/benefit is currently not there.
Let's see what future software/hardware upgrades bring.
    Cheers to all.

Hi 8400Help, I had compiled a list of suggestions in an earlier thread please check it out here: http://supportforums.blackberry.com/t5/BlackBerry-PlayBook/Future-Things-We-Want-Rim-To-Fix-On-The-P...

  • Release date for next version of Forms?

Has anyone heard of a release date for the next version of Forms (10.1.2.0.2 or whatever it will be)? I may be starting a major Forms project shortly and I'd like to use the most current version of Forms with the current Application Server.

We are looking at mid summer this year. Depending on your start times it may be as well starting on 10g (9.0.4) as there is a long support cycle for it.

  • Document versions making time machine have huge backups?

Time machine was working fine until i recently restored a backup last week. Afterwards i backed up everything but now i have noticed that every backup is over 800mb, for no reason. To test this, I backed up my mac, it was a 1.5GB backup, then 1 min later backed it up again and the backup was 1.3gb. So i downloaded time tracker, and found on several recent backups that there was this folder named .DocumentRevisions-V100 and it was in red. So i went to Time machine preferences and clicked options> exclude and went to Macintosh HD with show invisible folders ticked and excluded .Document Revisions folder. Just then i backed up my mac 7 times and all backups were 45 mb or less and everything now seems ok, but can you tell me any possible consequences of excluding this file form backup and why it was creating such huge files anyway? and what should i do about it?

It's possible the document revisions is corrupt. The way it is organized, it should only backup what changed. Sounds like it was backing up the whole folder.
If you exclude it, you won't be able to use Time Machine to restore previous internal revisions. You could still go back and grab previous saved versions. You just wouldn't be able to use the Versions feature to grab portions of a previous revision and insert it into the current version.

  • "Latest Backup" time/date is incorrect for OS X Server Time Machine backups

I administer a OS X Server that provides Time Machine backups for clients across our small business network. I'm running Server on a Mac Mini (2.3 GHz i7 with 8GB RAM), and after going from Mavericks to Yosemite (and from Server 3 to Server 4) the other day, the TM backups are still running hourly, but the "Latest Backup" times are incorrect.  Has anyone noticed this behavior?  In case it matters, none of the clients currently being backed up are Yosemite clients.  I mentioned this because for our older clients (10.6), the "Latest Backup" times/dates were always listed as "Unknown" in Server 3, and continue to be in Server 4.  Thanks!

I also had to restart the server and client after applying the "fix" I described above. Basically, no user should have multiple, simultaneous file sharing sessions on the server. But even clearing the user sessions does not resolve the problem beyond the next Time Machine backup, so I also tried disabling and enabling file sharing, but the problem also returns after doing this. Only restarting both the client and server after clearing the sessions has worked for me when I have this problem. The problem may return much later, but this work aroudn definitely works as a temporary solution.
Next time I encounter this problem I will try restarting just the server or just the client, because it is unlikely that the problem exists due to something on both systems. Server 3.x is definitely not as stable as it should be, but for my use, it is getting the job done.

  • How do i determine system version on time machine backups

I want to restore Leopard to 10.5.5 as I am having a lot of problems with Mail with 10.5.6. I did the Mail update but that didn't work and I had to reimport all my mailboxes and now I have a mess. I don't remember the date I upgraded to 10.5.6 so I would have to reinstall December 14th backup which is the first I have and I know that Apple released 10.5.6 on the 15th of December. but I may have installed it much later--is there any way to read the system version number off the time machine backups?

when you are using full system restore utility on the leopard install DVD it will display the OS version next to every restore point.
