Suggestion for people with Ethernet connection problems

I had problems getting my P965 Platinum to connect to my D-Link router and stay connected. It would connect once then on the next boot it wouldn't. I tried everything and finally, I'm not even sure what made me think of it   , I went into the Realtek properties and set it to 100Mbps/Full Duplex instead of 1000Mbps/Full Duplex and that did the trick. I thought I would share this because I know I wasn't the only having problems with it.

65MB/s vs 15MB/s ? hmm... can you try from a very clean OS for the transffer rate? This sounds like some Windows issue...
It is kind of clean OS install (+ windows xp service pack 2) as I just bought the mobo.
I kicked in my old A64 rig, and used same cables I have in my room. (I actually have 2 cables coming from my 1gb switch). Amd rig kicks like 45-50mb/s, while my msi 965p gives only 15-18mb/s for maximum transfer rate.
I quess my fileserver is bottlenecking to 50mb/s as the hdd's arent very fast, and they are quite full. Didint bother to build ramdrive for tesing as this clearly shows my msi's 1gb lan is just slow.
What I found out is that my amd board is able to use both cables on my room @ 1000mbit rate with same performance, where my MSI does connect 1000mbit with other cable, but autonegotiates to 100mbit with another. Also cant force it to use 1000mbit with the cable it is autonegotiating to 100mbit.  Strange.
Cables are cat6 speck. Cant try another cables as these are like 20 meters long, so Im not going to get new cable just for fun of testing.
Cables are so called "home made" I bought something like 80 meters of this cable and some connectors and borrowed the rj45 tool from friend.
I have constructed 1gb "intranet" to my apartmet, where every room has 1 cable, exept my own has 2. (got also 3x100mbit outbound connections (one/room), gotta love student apartments ).
quote from w.p.o: "The D-Links meant for home users are not the best quality possible. We were able to break 3 D-links gigabit home switches in a week just with load we got from couple of servers when we did some testing at work."
Actually this D-Link is one of the first 8-port 1GB home switches that can really achieve 8Gbit/s switching speed, where very many switches cant handle such loads and bottlenect to about 2-4gbit. (My student friends had this same box tested in some project @ university network lab).
Cannot ping the box, as it does not have any dedicated IP address for its self, as it is not router, but switch. Pinging trought router doesnt seem to drop packets, maybe i should get some network analyzer tool so I could make bit more traffic on the lines and see if it starts dropping packets then.
Tho might be also some bios problem or sumthing. Seems the p965 neo-f is atleast having lot of problems with all kinds of areas. Like:
PCI cards
Memory compatibility
Lan

Absolutely sure.. There is no connection at all.. reset is only the router side of the TC.
For the hard disk to be erased you need to access the airport utility disk page.. request erase and confirm the operation.
    2) I can access to time capsule by ethernet but I am not able to input the corret setting by myself
    Thank you again
I am uncertain why if you have access you cannot change settings.. but that is why you reset things so any of those problems should be fixed.
Here is the Apple info on reset.

And here is the quote from the horse's mouth so to speak.
Factory default reset: Perform this reset if you wish to repurpose the AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule and want to remove all personal profiles and settings first. This reset resets the device to its state when you first purchased it. Data stored on internal or external hard drives connected to the device will not be erased. If you choose, you may manually erase the hard drive using AirPort Utility.

  • Are there any amazing features for people with disabilities not available in Windows?

I do volunteer work at a group in Tokyo which provides English conversation and light computer lessons for people with various kinds of disabilities on Sundays at a community center.
They want me to come in on Sundays for a few months and teach people - such as their other teachers - how to use Apple computers. And they bought all the teachers, including me, new MacBook Airs or MacBook Pros.
The thing is, these people are basically all Windows users, and they seem, somehow, to use their Windows machines just fine with varying disabilities. In particular, some portion of the group are blind. There is a Mac enthusiast who has gotten it into his mind that he wants more of his fellow members using Macs, rather than Windows, so he is behind this new project.
I know there are "accessibility features" for the Mac, though I've not really made use of them myself except for some light testing so far to see that they work.
My question is "why Mac?" I am a Mac user myself, and I enjoy using a Mac. But I think it is probably a matter of what you are used to. If these people are happy using their Windows machines I don't know of anything I can say to make them want to switch. So I'm not sure how practical or productive the entire plan is, though I'm happy to try to help out, and I enjoy working with the group.
I can certainly teach these people, who are not familiar with Macs, how to use them. I've been using Macs for years and years.
But is there anything I can say about why Mac features for people with disabilities are better than Windows features? Any examples anybody can point me to?
Like I said, I'm happy to go over there on Sundays and help out and bring my new MacBook Pro over and hook it up to the projector and point out interesting things you can do on the Mac and answer questions.
But the big question that I can't answer is, "Are there benefits to using a Mac over Windows for people with disabilities?" If anybody knows of any, please let me know! I don't want the person promoting this project to feel it was a waste at all. I think basically he feels left out being basically the only Mac user there and wants to generate more of a circle of supportive people around him who are Mac users since he himself is losing his sight. So if there are factual, practical reasons for "Why Mac for people with disabilities" I would like to explain them.
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Hi Doug
It sounds like you are doing a good job with your technology students. I've been an Apple Mac user for well over 30 years and occasionally had to use Windows when using MS Access.  To my mind, the Mac is much easier to use from the "Starting Grid" than Windows.  And having worked in a University with both platforms, the cult is fairly evenly balanced.  However, the current generations of Apple Tablets are infinately easier to understand than OSX or Win7/8.    I think there is an old saying here which has many merits "If it ain't broke" don't try and fix it".   If your students are learning to understand Windows and are coping with it, the confusion of teaching them Mac, might actually give yourself a potential nightmare scenario.  Certainly Microsoft with Windows 8, is trying to bring the latest operating system into the 21st Century, and whilst it wouldn't suit me, why create a dilemma for yourself when they seem to be happy with what they've got.
In terms of your final paragraph, and reaching for the proverbial glass ball, I can see a future of tablets gaining even more popularity, and with the likes of Siri, which is in part available now on the iPhone.  Surely this is the path of the future where one can talk to the device and gain an immediate response.  Even Steve Wozniak hinted at this in a television interview on BBC's Click television programme.  I'm sorry there's no definitive answer to your question, but hats off to Gene Roddenberry whose imagination has given inspiration to the makers of our devices that has created a communications world and is infinately getting closer to the audience you are trying to reach out to.

You might try contacting the local school district's special needs people - this is something they will be familiar with. Also if you have a local cerebral palsy organization they might be able to point you in the right direction. Assistive software and devices do exist but I am too far out of that loop these days to give any specific help.

  • Ethernet connectivity problem appleTV 3rd gen to airport extreme 5th gen

I have an airport extreme connected with Tivo via a Trendnet ethernet plugin adapter via electrical outlet, and it works fine.  When trying to connect my AppleTV 3rd gen to another ethernet port of airport extreme with another faster (85mbps) Trendnet ethernet adapter via a different electrical outlet, my extreme goes from green light to flashing amber light and my wifi stops working.  Only when I disconnect the ethernet and start using wifi for my appleTV, will the airport extreme start working again.  It's driving me nuts.
My setup is ethernet (no cable modem or DSL modem) with the ethernet cable that supplies internet to my house coming through a router device (I think it is?) that is plugged into my airport extreme.  However, I do have a double NAT setup as my ethernet service has its own NAT too.  I tried switching from DHCP and NAT on the airport extreme to bridging mode as recommended, but then my internet doesn't work and I get a flashing amber light.  So I went back to DHCP and NAT on my extreme and am ignoring the double NAT, and so the wifi works fine now.
I have done multiple hard resets of all devices involved including the appleTV, airport extreme (I have set up my network at least 10 times) and have unplugged my router device and disconnected the ethernet cable supplying internet to the house as well.  Nothing seems to work.  I called tech support, and originally thought that my 3rd ethernet port wasn't working, so they mailed me another unit, which doesn't work as well (in fact, I keep getting a message to unplug my cable or DSL modem or disconnect the battery pack to cycle it no matter what I do but that is for another time).
Would greatly appreciate any help.  Thanks.

When trying to connect my AppleTV 3rd gen to another ethernet port of airport extreme with another faster (85mbps) Trendnet ethernet adapter via a different electrical outlet, my extreme goes from green light to flashing amber light and my wifi stops working.
If the Apple TV was originally setup for WiFi, I suggest that you reset the device back to default settings and then configure it again with Ethernet plugged in. Settings > General > Reset > Reset Settings
As a test,  connect a spare Ethernet cable of any length (that you know is working) from the LAN <-> port on the AirPort Extreme to the Apple TV for the setup.
Setup the ATV again and double check to make sure that it is operating correctly
Change the location of the ATV back to the desired location on the network behind the powerline adapters
If you have a problem now, the first thing to check is the powerline adapter and or wiring

  • Mac mini will lock up with ethernet connection

    Hi,
I've bought a mac mini intel intel 1.83GHz dual core with 2GB of RAM (RAM from apple, the mac mini came with the 2GB installed)
If I don't connect the ethernet port, everything seems ok.
I have connected the ethernet port to get internet, but while I was downloading the software updates, some of the downloads failed. Then if I go to the system preferences/network and double click on the ethernet configuration, the system will lock up (I cannot launch any more new application, I cannot even shutdown, Finder will display empty hard drives and so on) and if I run the Terminal before and do a "top" I can see that the kernel tasks reach 100%. But no kernel panics.
I've tried a different ethernet cable (actually the one on my mac mini ppc) and it will still fail. Both mac mini ppc & mac mini intel are in the same kind of network configuration.
There was 2 times where the computer locked up at around 10.7 MB of download of 10.4.8, and one time I was able to download it all, but I'm still not able to manage to download every other updates. That to say that it may lock up at some random time.
I did a complete 10.4 reinstall (erasing hard drive), and managed to update the EFI firmware, but this didn't solve the problem. I also tried to let it of 15 seconds with no power cable, and put everything back, but it is still the same.
So what I see at the first glance would be :
    - internal ethernet card problem
    - some weird memory problem
I would like to test the memory, and I remember there was a "apple hardware test" CD before on its own. As far I've seen I only have the 2 CDs for MacOS 10.4.7 reinstallation.
Please give me some advice before I go to an apple center.
    Thanks
mac mini   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

You can run the hardware diagnostics from the Installation disc.
Insert the disc, restart the Mini, and hold down the D key while the Mini starts up again. This will allow you to run the diagnostics.
The hardware diagnostics will detect only the most obvious memory problems. It may miss subtle problems.
I think you probably have a defective Mini. But before I took it back to Apple, I would try it in a different building with a different internet connection and different electrical power. It is possible that the electrical power in your building is the source of the problem, or it is possible that your router or modem that connects to the internet is not compatible.
I would also try turning off all the equipment. Then turn on the internet router/modem and then the Mini about 3 minutes later.

  • Help with Ethernet connection

My daughter has upgraded to a G4 Powerbook, so I've got her previous laptop, an iBook G3 dual USB. I'm basically a PC user, so am new to Apple and OSX. I've been trying to connect to my DSL service, have created a New Location in Network settings, selected Built-in Ethernet, and Using DCHP. When I Apply Now, a new window opens and it's trying to dial an old ISP with the internal modem. I have gone through the process many times. Any suggestions as to fixing this will be greatly appreciated!

  • Weird ethernet connection problem

    Hello
I have a really weird connection problem. I am not a complete beginner but I just don't see what's going on.
I just had BT infinity 4 installed with the modem placed in a closet. I then had cat6 cables installed by an electrician between the closet and the different rooms, all wall sockets on each end.
Test1: If I connect to the BT Home Hub wirelessly it works.
Test2: If I connect to the BT Home Hub via ethernet directly to the device it works.
Test3: If I connect to the BT Home Hub via ethernet through the wall sockets directly it works.
Test4: If I connect a switch (a DLink DGS-1210) to the wall sockets and I connect through the switch I do not get connectivity. I can however access the switch's web interface or other computers connected to the switch. But I cannot connect to 192.168.1.254 for instance.
Test5: if I connect one switch to each end of the wall socket, I can access the web interface of the other switch through one switch.
Test6: if I connect a switch directly to the BT Home Hub, and I connect through the switch it doesn't work.
The switch test the cables which are fine, I see no collision in the switch port monitoring, and I have the same problem with all sockets. So I do not think that the wiring of the electrician itself is a problem (otherwise Test3 & Test5 would fail).
This gives me the feeling that the BT Home Hub (BT Home Hub 5) is the cause of my worries but I can't think of a logical explaination of why the Home Hub would behave differently whether it's connected directly rather than through a switch. Also these are rather high-end switches, which have always worked very well and I do not believe that both would fail simultaneously.
    Has anyone experienced anything similar?
    thanks
    Charles

The switch by any chance has not got some form of dhcp set up. Maybe allocating ip addresses to devices on your network as well as the home hub. I had similar issue when I had connected a linksys ata onto my network, rather than use the socket labeled network I used the one labeled ethernet.

  • Ethernet connection problems

I am trying to set up ethernet connections between my Beige G3, my son's G3 iBoook, and a NEC SilentWriter 95 printer (using a Farallon EtherMac adapter). Both Macs are using Jaguar version 10.2.8. Up until recently, I had a crossover cable between the Beige G3 and the printer adapter, and was able to print just fine. I am now trying to connect all three nodes using an ethernet switch. Neither Mac can find the printer at all, and things are hit-and-miss trying to get the Macs to see each other on the network. The Beige G3 can usually see the iBook in the Connect to Server dialog, but when I try to connect, I get a -36 error code (sometimes a -5000 error code). The cables test out fine, and the link lights for both ports are lit on the switch. I have tried several iterations of rebooting, power-cycling, and manual address setting--all for naught.
Any advice on what to check, or how to diagnose the root cause?
    Thanks,
    Pete

The 169.254.xxx.yyy addresses should work as long as the subnet mask it assigned is 255.255.0.0. The subnet mask has a 1-bit for every binary bit that should be looked at to decide whether two IP addresses are on the same subnet. To communicate, the Macs must appear to be on the same subnet. If it does not do this automatically, you will need to set manual IP addresses.
The EtherMac adapter is an AppleTalk device. It does not have an IP address. It uses the Ethernet cable to talk AppleTalk protocol, just as the other devices use the Ethernet cable to talk IP protocol. They do not disrupt each other, but cannot be directly translated back and forth. Your Macs are also talking AppleTalk protocol onto the Ethernet cable when they go to print.
If you can get file sharing working and stable, then you should try power off the EtherMac adapter and the Printer, power up the printer and wait a minute after the lights stop flashing, and then power up the Ethermac. Although this device is a little better than the AsanteTalk at re-acquiring devices that drop out, it occasionally has the same problem and must be powered up last.

  • Database Design for use with XSQL-connected Clients

    Hi all,
this might seem a little off-topic at first, but I suppose we are not the only ones reading this group designing an architechture using XSQL servlet as the only connection to the database, with clients connecting over the internet.
So far our approach works well, but of course any database round trip is much more expensive in this environment than with clients that hold an open connection to the database.
That led us to the idea of generating primary keys on the client instead of the database (e.g. with CoCreateGuid on Win32). Do those GUIDs have to be stored in the Oracle database in a RAW column or does a NUMBER field do the job?
I found a hint in the Oracle 8i Replication manual to use SYS_GUID values in a RAW(32) column as a primary key to avoid conflicts between sequences on multiple machines. But I didn't find any statement concerning the performance issues of this.
Our database will not store huge amounts of data (most tables < 100.000 rows, just a handful more than a million in huge environments, which will be able to afford huge machines...), so this should not be
    a problem, I guess.
Does anyone of you have experience with this?
And another question: Can I safely assume that keys generated with SYS_GUID on the Oracle server will not likely be the same as those that are generated using CoCreateGuid on the Win32 client?
    Thanks for your input.
    Olaf Lewitz
    ohltec SOFTWERFT, Hamburg

Don't GUID's have hyphens in them? If so, you'd have to use a VARCHAR2(xx) of appropriate length. If not, then you can likely use HEX_TO_RAW() and RAW_TO_HEX() to store then in a RAW as you've noted.
Note that the XSQL Servlet's default connection manager does to connection pooling, so the roundtrip to the database may not be as expensive as you're thinking. :-)

  • Possible fix for car unit Bluetooth connectivity problems (it fixed mine)

Ok, I understand this only fixed my particular problem, so it may not work with every Bluetooth head unit.
I have a Pioneer deh-p7000bt and it worked beautifully with my iPhone 3GS.
Once I got my iPhone 4 I restored it from a backup of my 3GS. I had continual problems. I synced it and it would disconnect within minutes. This would happen everyday so I just gave up.
Yesterday I was playing around with my head unit. I DELETED any previously synced phones from my head unit. I also told my iPhone to forget my head unit. After deleting any traces of my older iPhone and new iPhone, I resynced my iPhone 4.
This time it stayed connected and reconnected automatically even after rebooting and restarting my car. Problem solved.
It may have something to do with the head unit being confused about the iPhone hardware.... Possibly from restoring it from a backup of the previous phone you had already synced to the unit.
Try this, it worked for me. Maybe it won't work for you.
    Thanks,
    John

I too have had problems with Bluetooth connectivity, with my wife's IPhone 5C, since updating to IOS 8 and now 8.02.  I have a 2013 Honda Accord with factory updated firmware.  Everything worked flawlessly before the IPhone update, but now the phone will connect to the car but I get error messages saying the contact list cannot be imported. I deleted everything, started over, still does not work.  I also have a Motorola Moto X with the latest Android build and Bluetooth connects automatically, works flawlessly and the contact list always imports when I enter the car, so it is definitely not a problem with the car's system.  I thought Apple products were superior to all else... I will be switching my wife to an Android phone if Apple continues to ignore the problem.  She needs this to work for safety reasons, since she works out of the car.

  • Can someone help with a connection problem?

I have a DroidX2 and have noticed that the phone routinely switches from 3G to 1X, especially in certain rooms in the house..
This is consistant and usually the signal is only two bars.
Whenever I try to watch a Youtube video it will play for maybe 12 seconds and then I will have to play with the settings in Youtube to download more of the video. Maybe 1 out of 50 times the video plays straight through without stopping. Most of the time the screen will show 1X instead of 3G. Could it be my phone settings, phone coverage or Youtube causing the problem? I sometimes have dropped calls as well. I have the most current software and Youtube was recently updated. I am also receiving "cannot establish a connection" messages on Youtube. Can someone please help? Thank you.

Lorenzo1950, thanks for posting! Are you still having issues with your connections? What is your zip code? How long has this been an issue? Does this issue with streaming video only happen at home or everywhere?^SP

  • Configure AX for iTunes through ethernet connection

I'm trying to do two things with my AX. I have a LAN wired in my house (with wireless access as well) and I'd like to connect the AX with Ethernet and use it strictly for playing iTunes through my stereo. In this configuration, I don't need it to see my wireless network.
Now, if I can get that to work, it would be helpful to use the AX to increase the range of my wireless network, but it would be connected by ethernet.
Can this work? I'll settle for just the iTunes connection. How do I config? I feel like such a noob! Thanks!

Welcome to the discussion area, Robert!
You will be able to to do what you want by configuring the AX to "create a wireless network" with the same network name (SSID), same security setting and same password as your current wireless network. But, you should configure the wireless channel on your router and the AX to be as far apart as possible to minimize the chances of interference between them.
First, reset the AX back to factory default settings as follows:
Pull the AX from power for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 8-10 seconds
It's a bit easier to configure the AX using AirPort Utility if you temporarily connect an ethernet cable between the AX and your computer. Once you have it configured, you can remove the ethernet cable and move the AX to the desired location.
You will use AirPort Utility to configure the AX. AirPort Utility is located as follows: Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities
Open AirPort Utility, click Manual Setup.
Click the Internet icon in the row of icons at the top of the setup page
Look for the Connection Sharing setting at the bottom of the next page and set this to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
Click the AirPort icon in the row of icons
Click the Wireless tab below the icons
Wireless Mode - Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name - Enter the exact same name as your current wireless network
Radio Mode - Same setting as your current wireless network
Channel - Set this as far away as possible from the channel that the other router is using
Wireless Security - Same setting as your current wireless network
Password - Same setting as your current wireless network
Click the Airport icon in the row of icons
Click the Music icon and enable AirTunes
Update to save settings and connect the AX using ethernet to one of the LAN ports on your router. You should be good to go.
Please post back on your progress. You have what is known as a "roaming" wireless network. Your computer will automatically connect to the device with the strongest signal as it changes location.
