Suggestion for Sharpening and Adjusting Images

Recently Adobe has revealed that they are working with Bruce Fraser of Photokit fame on advanced sharpening, probably as a "module" for LightRoom. Apple ought to take this opportunity to forge an alliance with nik Software and work out a way to use nik Sharpener Pro and nik Color Efex Pro either inside of, or as a plugin to, Aperture. With those two tools, at least 90% of the reason to do roundtrips to Photoshop for anything except complex layering would be eliminated. More sophisticated sharpening is something we use with almost every printed image, and the filters available in Color Efex Pro are truly amazing.
Any thoughts?

Right on! I also think it would be very cool for Apple to forge another alliance with high end book maker AsukaBook. They use PDF templates, but they are very hard to do. You basically have to use Photoshop to lay out the pages and then save them as a PDF. If Apples templates corresponded to the approved AsukaBook format, we could automatically layout the books and order from a high end vendor with much better quality than whoever Apple uses as a vendor.
(Cost of the books, if you can prove you are a working professional, since they only sell wholesale, is a little more than double the Apple price.)

Like I said, Im relatively new to PhotoShop and PS forum. I have researched the PS manual, PS help topics and this forum. I am not an individual that would ask a question of hard-working volunteers about a subject that I have not already researched. And yes, I know and understand what FAQs are and how they are generally presented on the web.
Huh? The FAQ section is for administrators to add things to, not users. If you have a question, you ask in the main forum. If many people ask the same question, then the administrators add an entry to the FAQ.
Okay if this is true, how was I able to post a message? I wasnt aware that I couldnt post a FAQ suggestion to the FAQ suggestion Forum? Hmm, maybe I missed the
small print on that one.

How to create a single action for adding a border and signature for portrait AND landscape images???

i would love to be able to create a single photoshop action for adding a border, plus a signature in the bottom right corner, that works for both portrait and landscape images.
need i say more?!
i already have an action that adds a signature in the centre of the border at the bottom of the image e.g. the image below. what i want though is for that signature to be on the RHS and for the same action to work for portrait images as well.
supplementary info: reason for this is that I want to be able to export 300 wedding images (mix of landscape and portrait images) from lightroom in my pre-selected order (meaning the files are labelled from 001 to 300, ordered according to how the wedding day unfolded) and then use PS to add the border and the signature, in the same place, and for it to work for both orientations.
i need this to work for full sized exported jpeg images, i.e. i want the files that i give on CD to my clients to include my signature in this manner. so I don't want to copy the initial layer and then reduce the second layer size to leave a border around the second layer.
i hope i've been clear and that someone can help me here. I think that this sort of presentation makes such a difference to final printed image, and I DONT want to have to go to all 300 images picking out the landscape from portrait ones (although this may be what I have to do and wouldn't really take that long but surely there's a better way!!!!).

It is actually quite easy to do if you have a good understanding of how Photoshop works. To be able to handle any size Landscape and Portrait you need to scale the document to a known width or height. Once the document is resized to the width or height it easy. When yot resize the document you use Image size with resample NOT checked. Not a single image pixels is changed all the happens is the documents DPI is set to the proper DPI resolution to print that size. This lets you add a border sized for and document. You can use Canvas Size check relative and leatve the anchor point centered and set width and height to 2" this will add 1"on all sides. Use Canvas size a second time move the anchor point to the top center check relative and set height 1" the will add an additional 1" border on the bottom. You then record a text layer with your Name title or what ever to the top left of the image. Select all ant the align the text layer to the selection to move it to the bottom right.
Adding a couple of scripts to the action you can make sure there is a background layer so the added canvas will be filled with pixels. You can restore the document to its original DPI resolution to retain the images print size. Down load my crafting actions package it contains a dozen scripts to be used within actions. There are text file with tips and guidelines additionaly there is one on dealing with document size and includes a sample action set with a watermarking action the can watermark and size image. I agree with PhHein, it's best to learn one technology and then the other. (Just my two cents, but start with JDBC from a simple standalone application, then when that is working, try to tackle Servlets, since you will need to also learn how to get them working in a container like Tomcat).

External HD suggestion for Lion and Snow Leopard

I have a new Mac Mini running OS X Lion, plus a MB Pro running Snow Leopard. I am looking to buy a new external hard drive to be able to back up both. Any suggestions? Any particular pitfalls with Lion and external HDs?

Get an external drive at least equal in size to the internal hard drive and make (and maintain) a bootable clone/backup. You can make a bootable clone using the Restore option of Disk Utility. All you need do is remove a case cover, mount the hard drive in the enclosure and connect the cables, then re-attach the case cover. Usually the only tool required is a small or medium Phillips screwdriver.

Producer loop and 2 consumer loop for acquisition and process images

Hello everybody,
I'm quite a newbie in Labview 2011 on Windows 7.
Those are what I want to do :
Step 1: When the objects fall with velocity around 2 to 5 m/s, images of these objects will be acquired continuously from PCIe 1433 with Basler spL4096-39kc.
Step 2: The processing of the images continuously in the same time with step 1 will find the datas of the objects in images as colors, patterns and locations. If the patterns and colors at location are as the same sample, the elements in Boolean data array are true.
Step 3: Every 01 millisecond, values from Boolean data array will be read, the valves of nozzle will be opened if the values are true.
My question is what is the best way to do my tasks ? I couldn't find any example of program in Labview and I think I use producer/consumer architecture for step 1 and 2 but I don't know how can I set up producer loop for step 3 and transfer Boolean data array from step 2 to step 3 ?

Thanks for your reply. I want sort the pellets that have 6mm diameter. The pellets were fed in a single layer by a vibratory feeder with a flat-bottom trough, 400mm wide that was supplied with the feeder . The pellets dropped off the end of the feeder onto a chute with 40 parallel U-shaped grooves. Images of these pellets will be acquired continuously. I make the sample from image that was acquired. I use NI Vision for processing of the images. If the patterns and colors of pellets are as the same sample, the elements in boolean data array are true. As you thought, I would like to interpret data every millisecond and open/close a valve based on the boolean array. The air valve sends a burst of air for 2 - 3 milliseconds to an air nozzle that diverts the pellets into the appropriate channel.
What are your ideas for this task ? Could you explain more clearly about "a real time system" and "determinism" for this task ?

Interface suggestion for Collections and Presets windows

Hi,
I would like to suggest you an improving of the left part of the main screen. I wish - maybe one day - that you can modify the management of collections, presets, etc...
When you have a lot of Presets and Collections, and we need to switch between them asap, it's very difficult to scroll all of the list (...the scrollbar is also on the left ! Strange idea...)
The best idea will be to redraw the actual design : in that case, the title bar and their "contextual menu" still always visible.
A simple mouse clic would allow to uncollapse Collection or Presets lists very quickly on the top. All titles won't be never hidden.

The thing is, I need all the data if the user wants to see Details, then I will need to display all rows. On the other hand, Sybase doesnt have the stdev function, I wrote a query that calculates stdev, but I will need to run the query once for each person, because it looks like this:

Multiple style sheets 1 for background and adjustable content and 1 for layout

H guys , I have 1 css that is attacthed to everypage of the site, this is the basic layout of the site , what I want and trying to do , is have another css for "each" page that has a different body back ground and the unique divs to that particular page !
I've attached both css to the page but the only the layout css shows , so there's no bg or unique divs showing , what do I have to do to get both to show on the page ? .. I've tried linking the 2 css togther but only the layout shows , so I'm pretty stuck . many thanks in advance if you can help

Yeah, it can be edited... but only by you!
So CSS in the <head> and CSS in a style sheet can both work... but if you have 10 pages, each with it's own CSS in the <head>... and you have to go in and adjust some stuff... that means you must open 10 pages.. do the edits.. separately... then test each of the 10 pages..... separately..
OR have a master CSS page... do all the edits at once, upload just one edited CSS page and then test the entire site... all at one time.
That's the heart of CSS... Cascading Style Sheets... changes/edits you make will propagate/cascade down over your entire site...
My advice... keep all your CSS in one (easily editable) file.

Using Aperture for collecting and adjusting scans?

I am in the process of digitizing a few thousand LPs, DATs and even CDs. I scan all the covers and use them in a FileMaker database as well as iTunes.
Does it make any sense to get and use Aperture as the holding place for these? I know about Bridge and QPict and GraphicConverter has a nice browser too. But I'm thinking about the organizational abilities of Aperture as well as the nice image adjustment corrections it provides.
Is this overkill? Does anyone here use Aperture for managing images other than RAW photos?

Bridge I personally do not think much of.
Since you own Photoshop and Filemaker I would just use those two apps, scanning into PSCS2 for editing then copying into FMP. Build your keywords in FMP and have each image have a unique I.D. number. The full resolution scans live elsewhere, identified by the I.D. number.
Put each image into a FMP container field, but before copying into FMP first reduce the image size as much as possible for your needs to keep the DB as small as possible. Do note that once you start the process you cannot make the images larger; you need to go find the original for that.
FMP 8 has a way to reference images without importing them but I have not used it yet. That may be appropriate for your purposes so you should check it out.

For black and white images in technical manuals, which format do you prefer?

So, I'm new at this company, and the person who is training me uses the EMF format for the images on the manuals.

On what type of press?
You probably want the images optimized for on-line viewing.
In the case of line art, this means staying in vector form, so that it scales cleanly, and using a stroke weight that is optimized for typical resolutions and convenience printing.
In the case of raster art, this means having enough resolution to maintain detail at reasonable zoom, and on convenience printers.
For vector, we normalize stroke weights to about 0.2 point, save as EPS and import the EPS. On Frame versions later than 7.x, PDF import might also be stable, and preserves vector as vector. SVG I haven't tested.
For raster contone (grayscale or color), avoid JPEG in the workflow. It is lossy and introduces artifacts. Never use it for screen shots or scans. Even if your camera image is JPG, convert it to an uncompressed form during edit and post-processing, such as PSD. Our target delivery resolution for contone is 200 dpi. This is slightly more than our press can resolve, but provides a bit of zoom for PDF viewing. We save the final images as EPS, and import those. TIF is also OK for this application (uncompressed). We select the compression level during PDF generation.
For bitmap images, again avoid JPG. We optimize these for 600 dpi (our press resolution), save and import them as TIF (EPS is really clumsy for bitmap).
EPS is a bit annoying to work with in Frame, as what you see during edit is a thumbnail or preview (72 dpi), but what renders to Ps or PDF is original vector or full raster. But EPS is fast, rock solid, and (if you need it) can preserve original CMYK color into the Ps or PDF.

Any suggestions for choir and Gregorian voice samples for EXS24?

I need good choir and Gregorian voice samples for the EXS24 and have not found much to choose from on the internet. Spectrasonics' Symphony of Voices is $500 and is not EXS24 format although they claim because it is Akai format, EXS24 should read it. Still, it's a lot of cash to drop on a sample set without it being in EXS24 format. I need choir and Gregorian voices that will work well for a gothic sound. Can anyone suggest anything? Thanks.

The Spectrasonics set is very, very good, and it converts into the EXS (from the Akai, at least) quite nicely.
Whether or not it's worth that kind of doe is only something you can decide. I never regretted buying that library though. The Pop stacks are worth it alone if you ever need "Enya" type vocal pads. I still haven't found anything better.
And the specialized stuff, like the Gregorian chants, is all extremely well done.

Css code for hover and replace image

on my page i would like my visitors to hover over a div that contains text and have an image appear, would need to work in most browsers and not disrupt any other div tags on my page. is there some simple css code to do this?

Initially set the display for the <img> to none, then set it to block/inline in the parent <div> :hover rule.

If you mean you want the image to occupy its space even when it's not shown, you can use visibility: visible/hidden instead.

New laptop spec suggestions for Photoshop and Illustrator

Hi Everyone!
As I am sifting through the posts regarding laptops - I figured I'd post my own as my requirements are a little different. I am looking to buy a new windows laptop. I work with Photoshop and Illustrator and basic office programs like outlook, word and excel. I have CS2 but will upgrade with the new laptop purchase - so running CS5.5 (or better) Photoshop and Illustrator is required. I may or may not buy the whole Creative Suite as I only use these and Acrobat. I want to spend what is required to get the job done well - not more - but I don't want to be cheap either – my laptop needs to work well & not hamper my workflow. This will be my only computer. Being efficient is key. I use Adobe to do graphics for apparel: (embroideries, prints, logos, etc.) and small business (logos, print media, etc.). I work in actual size – so a lot of what I do is on a 20 x 30 art board. I do not work on videos – just print media and static artwork. Suggestions on the specs I will need and/or actual laptop models would be great. Thanks so much for your help - it is all so confusing!

If after clearing history, I am still getting filled in suggestions in Firefox 3.6 user names using Mac OS 10.6, how can I eliminate the suggestions for users and searches?

I made an error when I was filling in a user name. Firefox is continuing to offer this as a suggestion in a drop down menu after using Clear Recent History. I used Clear Recent History, tried restarting Firefox after clearing history, and reinstalled Firefox. I did a search on Google, Firefox and Apple to see if someone else has reported this problem. All gave the same information that I have already tried.

In my case it seems that Firefox just doesn't "see" (or can't find?) the coupon printer application anymore after the FF update. (and yes, my add-ons are enabled - to answer the tech support people's first question).
For me, the coupon printer doesn't even show up in my Firefox "Add-Ons" list anymore. Is that what people typically see when they're saying the coupon printer "doesn't work" with FF? The coupon printer was visible on the add-ons list before my FF update, and now it's totally Gone! It seems that Firefox just doesn't "see" (or can't find?) the coupon printer application anymore since the FF update.
When I'm on the coupons.com site and I click "print coupons", it tells me I haven't installed the application. But it Is installed on my computer, I can see it in my folders, and it works on IE, so it's definitely there.
BTW - I have uninstalled/reinstalled the coupon printer application. I have tried all the suggestions on the Mozilla help/forum sites, as well as the Coupons.com web site. I have closed and re-started Firefox after the installation. I have also shut down and restarted my pc after installation. I tried installing the application with Firefox open, and tried it again with Firefox closed. I've even cleared out all my cookies/history associated with Coupons.com.
... I can't think of anything else to try, except for the "solution" of using IE for coupons.
If it Really is a problem on the Coupon.com end of things, do you think it's worth it if we bombard the coupons.com support team with messages saying they need to fix the problem? (or just a waste of time?) ;(

Suggestions for NAS and How to Connect

I'm looking at buying a 1.5TB+ NAS. A few questions:
1) Any product recommendations?
2) I have a 500GB Time Capsule. Should the NAS be connected to my router or the Time Capsule (or does this matter)? Looking for the best speed.
My current 500GB Seagate Free Agent freezes and disconnects during file transfers. I understand this is an issue with the drive. Hence the search for an NAS.

For best bandwidth performance, you want to connect the NAS by Gigabit Ethernet.
