Suggestion for SSD / RAM (W530)

I just ordered my W530 , I got a pretty much stock config expect the resolution, which I upgraded.
I wanted to get some after market stuff and want some opinions/ suggestions.
For ram:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233242
I think 8GBs should be sufficient. I am going to university for engineering in the fall and I can't imagine the software demanding too much memory. I'm assuming the W530 can support 4 dimms, so if I need more memory, I could just buy another one of these kits.  The reason I want these over the 1x 8GBs is because of the timings.
For an SSD:
http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820233208
Should be enough storage for me. I still have my desktop for movies and games etc. I might get the ultrabay enclosure if need be, but as of now it doesn't seem to important to me. Is this drive decent, or does someone want to suggest something else.
I've been made aware, I need special rails to fit this drive in the laptop?
Would something like this work?
http://www.ebay.ca/itm/300604030583#ht_1117wt_1163
Also, does the computer come with Win 7 disc for when I install the O.S. on the SSD?
I'm open to any suggestions. What do you guys have? What works? Thanks for any replies.

You won't need different rails if you get a 7mm high SSD. I got the 256GB Samsung 830, which I would recommend over all of the Sandforce drives except the ones made by Intel. And it was around the same price as the one you chose, which makes it a much better deal than anything by Intel.
The computer does not come with an OS disk, but you can make recovery discs without to much difficulty.

Bit confused what to look for as products have keywords like DDR3 / PCI slots / 1333MHz, 1.5V .. not sure what to get.. can someone suggest what should I be getting ? If possible can you share a link ..
    Thanks.

    This is from Toms Hardware;
"2x4GB allows to run in dual channel, but no, not 2 times faster, a single stick operates as a 64bit device in dual channel the two sticks operate together as a 128bit device which in reality provides for up to an appr 15% gain in performance vs single channel - the lower the latency at a given freq the better performance, however have to take into account the freq also a 1333/CL7 set can't touch a 2133/9 set in sheer performance + the higher the freq the higher the bandwidth so the more data can be dealt with in a single clock cycle"
However, the best choice for you now, since you're upgrading your RAM is to go Full Monty on it and get 2x 8GB paired, because if you only decide on getting one, then you might have a hard time finding a matching 2nd module later. But there would not be a significant performance hit you'd take from getting a different module, not anything you'd notice at least. It's just good practice to get them paired. My 2 cents.

I strongly recommend OWC. Not only do they have excellent prices, but their parts are high quality and all guaranteed to work with mac products. Also, they have excellent videos to install any component.
I've ordered from them dozens of times in the past and they are simply the best in all aspects of the sale:

  • Any suggestions on what RAM to get??

Any advice on what is the best brad to get? I've heard stories of peoples laptops going bad after installing bad RAM
    I have a mid 2012 macbook pro

Around here you'll get two suggestions for RAM - Crucial and OWC.
If you visit the Crucial website and click on the System Scanner tab, you can download a free little app that you can unzip and run and your model and suggestions for upgrades will launch in your browser window. It's a nifty little tool.
OWC is also good, although a bit more expensive than Crucial.
    Good luck,

If more information is needed, please ask, I am unsure if I have supplied enough. This computer is mostly base specs without upgrades. The upgrade options I have posted below the questions are some examples of what I'm interested in. This computer is used mostly for word processesing, web browsing, music storage/playback, and some gaming. Nothing too intense, but I can tell the computer is much slower now and I'd like to get it back up to speed.
My current hard drive is begining to run very slow, even after a full wipe and reinstall of only necessary files. Should I just update to a new HDD? Is it worth upgrading to a SSD for added speed? Also, can a SSD @ 6GB/s speed have any compatibility issues with my computers 3GB/s limit? Any recommendations for hard drives? Further, is my RAM selection compatible and are there other companies / options in general you would suggest when it comes to RAM? Can I exceed my 1067MHz speed without issues?
The products I have looked into include the following:

    Hey Dana,
Yes, I ended up going with a Crucial M500 240GB. In the end, I was between the M500 and the Samsung Evo 840 250GB. The Evo has higher read/write speeds and is an overall praised peice of hardware! I personally chose the M500 because they were pretty cheap on amazon at the time (about $90 during after holiday sales.)
    http://www.crucial.com/usa/en/storage-ssd-m500
    http://www.amazon.com/Crucial-240GB-2-5-Inch-Internal-CT240M500SSD1/dp/B00BQ8RM1 A/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1402909537&sr=8-1&keywords=m500
The 250GB Evo comes in at around $135 with barely higher read speeds, but double the write speeds. What swayed me away from the Samung was the fact that a few Evos had encountered issues with particular Mac models and wouldn't work, also some Evos had a hard time performing at advertised rates when in Macs. Knowing little, I went with the safe (and cheaper) bet, Crucial. I wouldn't doubt most of the time the Evos would be fine though.
Seagate drives have good advertising specs and great price points, but every longevity test I could find was terrible for them! Avoid Seagate if you can!
1 Seagate example posted back in January when I was looking around:
    http://www.neowin.net/news/seagate-hard-drives-exhibit-surprisingly-high-failure s-rates-in-reliability-test-hitachi-leads-the-pack
I like the M500 and have had no problems or issues, and the computer is noticably faster! In addition to the SSD I upgraded to 8GB of Crucial RAM. The RAM was cheap and SUPER easy to install, although the HD/SSD swap was very easy as well. Youtube has very clear, easy to follow instructional videos, some posted by the manufacturers of the drives! The SSD + RAM made me certain that this 2009 computer will last as a mobile compainon for the next 2-5+ years for all my on-the-go computing needs! Definitely worth the money for my situation!
If just starting your search, I would recommend looking up your comp model on everymac.com and see what compatible parts they suggest as a starting point, they also have great info such as the following max RAM cap chart:
    http://www.everymac.com/systems/by_capability/actual-maximum-ram-capacity-of-mac s.html
Please feel free to ask any questions, I'll help if I can, or point you to the right place for information, but as user clitonfrombirmingham pointed out, if you start your own thread with your specific computer specs, I'm sure you'll get detailed info on what is best for your rig!  Hope this helped! Have a good one,
    Zach

  • Any suggestion for a damaged logic board rather than buy a new computer

Any suggestions for a damaged logic board rather than buying a new computer

The most frequent RAM vendor recommendations are Crucial.com and MacSales.com (OWC).
With respect the logic board, you could ask Apple about a "Fixed Price Repair" which will generally repair everything that is wrong with a Mac.

My Mac book Pro is running very slow and the rainbow ball is appearing all the time. Any suggestions for clean up?? I have the OS X Lion system.

As well as what a brody asked :
    - do you need more RAM? (run Activity Monitor and see how much free RAM - green - is available)
    - do you Restart fairly regularly, e.g. at least once a week, to clear out any swap or temporary files?
    - do  you need to do maintenance, e.g. clearing out caches and unused logs, etc?

  • Oracle VM suggestions for small firm.

We're a small IT services firm that's looking to expand it's virtual farm.  While we're VMware certified, it's price point is pushing us out in favor of something else.  For the last year, we have standarized on Oracle Linux so naturally Oracle VM is the next logical choice.  We want to create a VM farm using Solaris as our SAN and Oracle VM as the hypervisor.  Any suggestions to get our feet wet on a minimum budget?
    Joe

Joe, I would suggest to start by reviewing the documentation, the requirments and design options are well documented. As well as a SAN you will need a NFS service. Also, if you are going with OVM x86, will not be able to use Solaris as the OVM server or OVM Manager, but guest support for Solaris is there.  Try setting up a lab with two physical hosts running OVM server to create a pool and a third small machine to run the OVM Manger server (the OVM manager can be on in a VMware VM), I suggest 8 GB RAM for the OVM Manager. You may want to roll out the OEM plug in for OVM to get support for roles and other advance features.

  • Suggestions for organizing folders?

I have way too many folders with subfolders, and my problem is I like to keep folders on my desktop with files I need to attend to in the near future. If I do not, then I will likely forget about it.
1.) Can anyone recommend a way to organize my folders so they always stay in the same spot in fixed places somewhere near the top of the screen, though I can still move other folders around on other parts of the screen? Almost like a dock for folders?
2.) Can anyone provide any other general suggestions for organizing folders for something like this?
    Thanks!

I don't know of a way to 'pin' certain folders to specific locations in the desktop grid without pinning all of the other folders as well. You could try [DragThing|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/633] or you could do what I do. I put my storage volumes in the dock and navigate them hierarchically and only put the folders that I need at the moment (projects) in the dock. It is not a good idea to have 'tons' of stuff on your desktop, especially if they are files (not necessarily folders.) The system has to store all of that info in RAM. At one point I thought I had a memory leak but it turned out to be a video file on the desktop that was using about a gig of RAM. Moved it into a folder and memory usage went back to normal.
According to you sig, you are running Tiger, but you are posting this on a Leopard forum. If you are using Leopard, you should also look into [Path Finder version 5|http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/6371/path-finder]. I would be very hard for me to live without it. There is +a lot+ of things you can do with it. (Including Smart Sorting, ie. list folders before files.) In my opinion, it is well worth the money.
    Hope this helps,
    D.

You'll need a cheap SATA external hard drive case. Put the new drive in the case then format and partition the new drive and clone your old drive to the new one. • G-Speed Q noisy? Suggestions for quiet raid?

I just received a G-Speed Q external raid (8 TB) from the Apple Store, and though it was advertised as "whisper quiet" the fan is quite noisy and always on high speed. When I turn it on besides my Mac Pro (4 internal HDs + big graphics card) it sounds like a hairdryer. G-Technology support told me that this sounds like a defective unit, but I saw some other complaints about G-Speeds beeing noisy. So should I send it back and look for another solution?
Any advice or suggestions for a quiet raid (5) solution would be very appreciated.

    Scott
Interesting regarding your comment on SSD, I had bought one a Kingston 128GB entirely for pagefile and caching, which it is being used for presently.
Not having done any testing as to any possible speed improvement my gut feeling has always been that it doesn't do much in tha arena, but I got talked into it with the feeble hope I'm wrong and those who persauaded me are right.  Blind Faith
On that note, my initial comments to change the system drive to a SSD was based more on heat distribution, inasmuch there being one spinning drive that doesn't get enough cooling once the RAID configuration consists of five internal drives.
Perhaps it would be best to eliminate drive "D" and put all of those folders on a "Super RAID" drive and leave the system drive as is.
I would appreciate any thoughts on this you'd like to share?
    Cheers,
    Michael

  • Internal Optical for DVD-RAM read/write

I want to buy an internal DVD multidrive to install in my MacPro. I have old Type 1 DVD-RAM media from my trusty Sawtooth G4 that I want to keep using and I want to continue archiving my freelance jobs, photos and video to DVD-RAM, using more current cartridge type disks.
Though I've searched quite a bit on the Internet for something I'm having trouble determining whether drives I'm finding accept the Type 1 cartridge and whether the drive will be compatible with my MacPro.
Does anyone have personal experience with installing a DVD-RAM drive on a MacPro? Any suggestions for selecting a drive or for installation?

My old Type 1 disks are double-sided and I also want to use Type 2 and 4 double-sided cartridges if I buy a DVD-RAM drive. I like having archival data on disks inside the cartridges. These are like glorified ZIP disks. For my intended use, I think they're much superior to a non-cartridge disk.
I found some Panasonic drives that are billed as capable of playing cartridge disks, the one directly below even specifying Type 1.
    http://www.usb-ware.com/panasonic-lf-m821-oem.htm
    http://www.cwol.com/dvd-burners/panasonic-lf-m821-oem.htm
The above sites feature almost identical product pages, along with a few other sites I landed on. That fact made me a little wary, since I don't understand the reason to have multiple sites with the same pages but a different name in the site header. I also don't find this drive on any sites other than these with the identical product pages. I wondered if it is a non-U.S. market drive. When I wrote the company they responded affirmatively about the drive working on my Mac and playing the Type 1 disks, but they didn't respond to an inquiry about it being a U.S. vs. non-U.S. drive and whether that mattered for my hardware. The Panasonic USA web site also didn't feature this drive, so that concerned me.
The Panasonic drives below show cartridge capability but don't specifically say that they're Type 1-compatible:
    http://logicalplus.stores.yahoo.net/padvddlsumud1.html
    http://logicalplus.stores.yahoo.net/answ5xdvdram.html
    http://logicalplus.stores.yahoo.net/pasw8xdufodv.html
It seems that Panasonic is the company making drives that may be suitable for my particular needs. I'm just a little wary and am hoping someone else has had some experience with these drives on G4s/G5s and/or Intel MacPro computer.

  • Set up virtual memory for 6gb ram

    hi ,
can any one please tell me how to set the virtual memory custom size for 6GB ram?

    Frederic,
Those rules of thumb stem from the era when is was common to have 2 or 4 GB of memory, but with memory in the range of 12, 16 or 24 GB, I think we can forget about that rule of thumb. I would use a rule of thumb that the sum of installed memory and pagefile need not exceed 32 GB. With disk space being so cheap there is no reason to skimp on pagefile size, but with increasing amounts of installed memory, the pagefile will be used less and less. The general rule that Windows applies would result in a pagefile of 36 GB on a 24 GB system and that is overdone IMO. On a 48 GB system, Windows suggests a whopping 72 GB pagefile! That makes no sense. So, on a 48 GB system even a 4 GB pagefile would likely not be used at all, but Windows requires one to be present, otherwise it will create one for you on C, which is dynamically allocated and that is worse than a fixed, static pagefile as the first file on another disk.
Of course, if you make it a habit to switch between AE, PR, Maya and other applications a lot and work on files with large pixel dimensions, the sum total can easily be increased to 48 GB.
My suggestion is to use common sense.

  • HP 8730w Elitebook SSD & RAM

    Hi,
i've got an HP 8730w Elitebook and i recently installed Windows 8. I'm thinkin of upgrading the RAM (from 4GB to 8GB) and the hard disk  (into SSD). Which SSD & RAM are compatible with my system?
    As i saw the supported RAM should be DDR2 PC2-6400 • CL=6 • Unbuffered • NON-ECC • DDR2-800 • 1.8V.
As for the SSD, SATA II is supported but what if i install a SATA III SSD? Will this be supported by my system? Is there any advice for any brand name which will be more compatible with problems free?
    This question was solved.
    View Solution.

    Hi,
This is a very good source and they guaranty:
       http://www.crucial.com/upgrade/HP+-+Compaq-memory/EliteBook/EliteBook+8730w+Mobile+Workstation-upgra...
Since SATA III is backward compatible, very safe to you SATA III. You have to pay a little bit more and may only get SATA II speed. You can run a small program called PCwizard to get the right information on your machine.
    Regards.
