Suggestion for using Itunes

I have solved my lack of space problem from too much music on hd. presently I'm have moved everything to my external hd and use the music from this site. But I just realize I will not have copies if HD fail. I'm curious to hear others techniques/method of storing and using their music. If their is a better way, I would like to see it.

Austin:
You really should consider backing up ALL of your music, and doing an incremental backup regularly onto DVDs and keep a set in a fireproof safe or off-site.
Even though you have the original CDs, you've probably spent some time adding album art, lyrics, cleaning up the ID3 tags, which you'd have to do all over again if you lost your music files. Since iTunes has the nifty data disc feature, why not take advantage of it and back up ALL of your music.
First, you will need to create a new playlist and put all of the files you want to back up (this should be your entire iTunes library - at least for the first time) into that playlist. Ideally, you should name the playlist with the date of the back up (more on this later). After making certain that you changed the burning format to Data CD/DVD, select this Playlist and click on the Burn button. After inserting the DVD media, you will get a warning screen that you are about to burn a DVD in data format, which will not may not be readable by DVD player (i.e., the type connected to your TV). Click on OK, since you want this for backup, and not playing purposes. In fact, you will get this annoying warning each time you insert a new disk to burn. Also, you may see an initial screen saying that it can take up to an hour to burn the DVD. Don't worry - at 4x, it takes about 15 minutes per DVD. Also, don't worry if you see a message at the end of a disk burn about finalizing taking up to an hour - this is also pretty meaningless. It takes about 3 mins or less.
Keep inserting media until done. Keep these disks safe, if possible, in a secure location separate from your computer (like all good backups).
Now, as for the reason why you should name the playlist with the date. You do want to keep backing up, but you don't really want to keep backing up the same files (a waste of time and media). After you've completed the backup, create a new SMART playlist. It should have a few conditions:
Date Added IS AFTER (Date of Last Backup in MM/DD/YYYY format, i.e., 03/27/2005)
And if you listen to Internet radio or sample streams:
Kind IS NOT Stream
LIVE UPDATING should be checked.
If you do a lot of work with the ID3 tags, you may want to consider setting up a second Smart Playlist:
Date Modified IS AFTER (Date of Last Backup in MM/DD/YYYY format, i.e., 03/27/2005)
Kind IS NOT Stream
LIVE UPDATING should be checked.
Which will capture tracks you have modified.
Unfortunatly, you can't use both conditions in the same smart playlist, but you can create a third Smart Playlist that references both the New and Modified ones, so you only have to burn one playlist to maintain your incremental backup. Once a month, you can burn these playlist (as a Data CD or DVD, depending on the size) and after the burn is finished, you will need to change the dates to the date that you burned the backup.
Even if you chose to go the Finder route for the initial backup, you should use Smart Playlists and iTunes' Data Disc option to back up the incremental changes.
Also, you need to back up the metadata stored in the iTunes Library file, which is found in the ~/Music/iTunes folder. This can be done by duplicating the file and moving the copy to your documents folder, or if space is an issue, you can make an archive of it. I like to make an archive, then email a copy to my Gmail address - this way I know I have a copy of the file in offsite storage.

  • What is the best product for using itunes only?

I am considering buying a laptop / notebook / ipad or whatever for using itunes only.  The goal would be to add all cd's to the product and then increase my collection via downloads only going forward.
Can anyone recommend the best product for this please?  I have an ipod nano and I'm new to the iphone, so I'm an Apple convert, although I'd consider a non-Apple product too (sorry Apple!).
    Budget is tight!
    Thanks in advance

Without a bit more info, it's hard to answer your question.
How many CD's do you intend to keep on the PC/Mac/iPad as an iPad has a maximum storage of aprox 55Gb's for the top model, whereas even a basic PC laptop is likely to have 150Gb plus of space. Plus you are going to need a PC/Mac to copy the CD's in the first place, unless you intend to buy all your music from the iTunes store.
For me I would look at either a MacBook if you can go to the £1000 price bracket, or look at a MacMini and cheap screen then transfer the music to your iPod/iPhone or sadly from a price point of view you may have to go the Windows route as a basic laptop will start at £400

  • Monthly payments for using itunes?

I'm getting these payments size of a like 2€ (euros) and I don't understand the reason. I got the first payment when I registrated my credit card and second when I downloaded first (it said it's free) thing from the itunes shop on my ipod touch, and third one when I actually bought something, and the thing what I bought was 2€ + 2€ (for what, if I may ask?)
And I talked with my friend, and he said, he too gets this kinda every monthly payments, just for.. useing the software?
If it's so, then I understand, but there's no information about the taxes?! And apple store account purchase history shows no sign about it, what so ever.. so what the f. is going on?
(and I can't change the credit card data, 'cuz every time I click on the button "edit payment information" it just displays error, that the service is temp. unavailable) and the helpline.. It directs me to another countrys helpline.. I mean what? I have to make international phone call to get info for that? You know how much it will cost me?

There is no monthly fee for the iTunes Store. You pay only for what you purchase. However, when you open a new account, or enter in a new credit card (and possibly when you update your credit card, for instance with a new expiration date), the iTune Store will put a small hold on your account to verify that the credit card is valid. That hold should be removed by your bank within a few days.
Check your Purchase History and see if is shows any record of these charges. If it does and it's not something you expected to be charged for, ontact the iTunes Store Customer Service department using the form on their Support page (select the category and subcategory closest to the issue you're reporting and you'll find an "Email Us" button) and explain your situation to them.
If you see purchases made that you did not make yourself, immediately change your password to your account, then contact your credit card company and report the charges as possibly fraudulent. Do the same if you are being charged but you see no matching purchases in your Purchase History.
    Regards.
P.S. The iTunes Store has no telephone support. You use the contact form I linked above.

  • Suggestions for use of EQ Cymbols, hi-hats, shakers PLEASE

One consistent mistake I'm making in my my mixes is trying to achieve a balance between "bright enough" sound at the high end (pianos, Cymbols - hi-hats - shakers, etc). It seems if you don't add EQ and sometimes compression to these tracks at all you can barely hear them and I hate that muffled sound. Then, however, at the back end of my projects, I'm constantly faced with having to elliminate clipping or distortion with these instruments. Please share some techniques without getting to technical if possible. I know this is a subjective call.
But For Example, maybe someone migght suggest for EQ on hi-hats on Frequency Gain/Slope:
    99.0Hz, +8.0dB 1.10Q
    500Hz, +0.0dB 0.71Q
    1080Hz, +2.0dB, 0.71Q
    7000Hz, +12.0dB, 0.6Q
I also could use help knowing where to set the volume for individual tracks at the BEGINNING of the project. That's the other problem - setting my individual track volumes too high then having to "dig them out" of the mix at the back end and not having enough volume "head room" to do it. - TOTAL REWORK.
Lastly, is it generally NOT a good idea to have "yellow" notes (val:80)?

Due to lack of assistance, we were unable to pursue this requirement - the users were not happy, but what can you do, huh!

  • Do I get charged for using Itunes player or just for downloads?

    Hi,
I never used Itunes before.  I've downloaded the player, completed all my details - user name, email etc.  But the question I have am I charged for using the Itunes player or just for the download originally?

Neither.  The iTunes player is a free download, and there is no charge for using it.
You will only incur a charge if you make a purchase at the iTunes Store.

  • Product suggestion for future iTunes

I can't find where to send a product suggestion to Apple.
When listening to "live" albums (i.e. Oscar Peterson's "A Night in Vienna" or Eric Clapton's "Unplugged" etc...any album that's been recorded with applause between tracks)...the applause is often annoyingly loud. It would be great to be able to designate tracks as "recorded live" and have iTunes automatically reduce the playback volume for the applause. I realize this might be a challenge to get iTunes to recognize the applause vs. the music, but...that's my suggestion. This would be different than 'Sound Check' in that it would fade out (reduce volume/levels) for the applause only...not the entire track.
    G5, iBook G4, G4, and a trusty old 7200/90   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

I don't know how this would be done either, but I would imagine...
    • it wouldn't be fool-proof (what is?)
    • I think that most applause has some common audio attributes. If a song is checked by the user to make use of a "live applause filter", for example, it would 'listen' to the beginning/end of a track and match the audio against a filter of common applause audio attributes, and appropriately fade/reduce volume if there's a good filter match.
    • program it to only allow the fade at the beginning/end of tracks--mid-song applause would remain as-is. I would think that should be easy enough.
    • perhaps the program could 'learn' intuitively or be 'taught' by the user the applause attributes of each song ... for example: such-and-such song has an applause fade 0:06 into the beginning and 3:50 - 4:15 at the end. iTunes attempts automatic detection, then allows the user to 'tweak' what it came up with.
Just ideas. I have no idea about what I'm talking about...I know nothing about audio, programming, or much else...just a user with an idea for this.

  • I have Apple ID for using iTunes, but haven't signed in. Now my Ipad stolen, how can I use Find My Phone for finding my Ipad?

Who can help me, to add my Ipad to Deviecs in Find My Phone. I was usually using my Ipad sign in iTunes for download music, but haven't signed in iCloud yet. Now my I Ipad stolen, how can I use Find My Phone?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
You can only locate your device when it is logged into iCloud and 'Find My Phone' is enabled, additionally the device will need to be switched on and connected to a wifi or cellular network.
Unfortunately, you cannot activate iCloud or 'Find My Phone' remotely.
If the device is wiped by you or another, you may not be able to locate the device (although some have reported they can)

  • I have a suggestion for Windows iTunes. Make a Widget for it.

Make a Widget that displays the lyrics to songs in a streaming fashion.
    Build it into iTunes.
It you want to get fancy, you can have a aero effect in the background of the streaming lyrics.
Where there can be video clips, or slideshows as a transparent background on the widget that's streaming the lyrics.
If you want to get fancier than that.
You can make it screen size,
If you want to get fancier that that.
Make it so that other people can create transparent backgrounds that can be added to a library, and upload them so iTunes users can access them easily using advanced search options.

The best way to submit a suggestion to Apple is through the iTunes feedback page. It'll be more likely to get to the appropriate people within Apple that way.

  • Suggestions for using .folios in a classroom

    Hi all,
We would like to use Indesign to create interactive .folio files in a classroom atmosphere.  My hope was that students can work on their files and export as a .folio and just pass them around to each other on for viewing/review/testing.
The free acrobat account will only allow for one Folio that is not down-loadable. In other words you must log on to your adobe account via the Adobe Content Viewer App each to view your Folio. My hope is that each student will be able to actually download the final app onto their hand-held and have it work like any other app.
Can anyone provide any good suggestions on how they would go about using these tools in a classroom of about 30 students without paying for the 5000 folio package (it looks like that is the smallest version that they have), as our budget is not anywhere near enough to cover that expense.
    Thanks for any input.

The only free solution I can think of is to get each student to create their own unique Acrobat.com account. Then they can share their folios whith each other by using the Share dialogue box on the folio builder fly-out menu. Although you may have to invite each one into each workspace on Acrobat.com first though, I'm not sure.

  • Dv cam suggestions for use w/Rode video mic...

A friend ordered a Panasonic PV-GS500 from J&R which was delivered DOA. He sent it back and was then told they had none to replace it as it was discontinued.
He needs a decent consumer DV cam ( up to or around a 1K ) with a hot shoe attachment to use in conjunction with the Rode video mic to record solo music performances.
    Suggestion...?
    Thanks

  • AU filters, and some suggestions for use

I have just discovered the powerfull AU filters for the tracks, and would like some overall suggestions on their use. I have read on many forums and posts on what each one is, but my question is more on the line of when is enough enough, and can you degrade a file, like an image file, by too many filters?
Example one: Podcasts. Plain recording of vocal track with no efffect. After the recording, my thought is too apply the AUlowpass to take out the highend and clean up the sound. Then, maybe the AUMatrixReverb to fill it out.
Then, on the MasterTrack, apply the AUMultiband Compressor to balance the output. Is this something that would be ok?
Example two: Vocal recording project. Apply AUfilter to the backing instramental track to make it the way you want...
Record vocals again plain, vanilla, no effects. After the recording, add AUlowpass if needed, maybe AUGraphicEQ to shape the vocals, then do the MasterTrack effect as above.
I guess I would just like some more suggestions from people in the know on some use of the AU filters and how to do it best.
    Thanks,
    Cory

First, yes, you can degrade output, because a filter (by definition) changes the signal. However, if you use them carefully, they will enhance the sound. You don't have to worry about signal processing artefacts of too many filters in a row, since the design of the AU filters seems to be quite good. But in the end, your ears have to be the judge: why should you worry about degradation if you like the result?
About the low pass filter: normally, parametric EQ is used to cut specific frequency bands. E.g., if you have some trouble in the higher frequencies, it is unlikely you need to cut all of it, which is what a low pass filter does. This will make your mix sound dull. A parametric EQ can apply a much more precise and subtle edit, and at different places (most mixes also benefit from cutting the higher bass a little bit). EQ can also be used to boost. E.g., a slight increase around 12kHz can give some "air" to the mix.

  • HD monitor suggestion for use with Mac Mini.

    Hello Group,
Can anyone suggest the best (or good, compatible) HD monitor to use with my new mac mini just purchased (late 2009 model). Can't afford the apple cinema's so I'm looking for a cheaper option to still have HD using HDMI inputs, looking to spend around $200-$300..also do I need to purchase an adapter of some kind?. Thanks so much for any suggestions!

Although I have no specifics, from various articles I have read
about the condition, a few things stand out.
What seems the most prevelant and makes a lot of sense is
to use a monitor that has a matte finish screen.  Glossy screens
regardless how you tweek lighting and viewing positions will always
have some amount background reflection.  It can be so low as to
not be conciously perceptible, but the eye is still detecting it and
is trying to correct for it and what is viewed on the screen.
On the subject of lighting, with the wider spread use of CFL
lights could be adding more people to the list with this problem.
The "cycle times" of these can conflict with display refresh times
causing the susceptable persons eyes to get confused.  The old
incandescent bulbs had much less of this effect.
Screen refresh rate can also be an issue.  With the iMacs and
the Thunderbolt displays as well, these are fixed and cannot be
tweeked, atleast not without third party intervention.  With a
Mini and some other third party monitor, adjusting refresh rates
    can help.
Environment in general is a major contributor as well.
So, resolving the issue may not be as simple as just getting
a different monitor, although matte screens seem to be a
    major help.

  • Help!!! Legal advice for using iTunes music as a DJ in the UK

Hi. I work as a DJ and would like to use music I have purchased from iTunes in a club where all licences (PPL & MCPS) are paid. Can I get permission or pay a fee that allows me to do this legally? And if so how do I go about this?
    Please help!!!
    Silv

DJ in the UK, Typically the way that it works here in the United States clubs pay royalties to ASCAP, BMI etc.... and the Governing body is the RIAA, The Club usually purchases or Pays the DJ in which the Licensing fees are paid. To the best of my understanding Apple abides by domestic and international laws that prevail with regard to copyright and royalties ie. RIAA and other governing agencies internationally.
To the best of my understanding after reading Apples TOA you are in no way prohibited from playing that music you legally purchased for a Public Audience as long as local applicable Laws and Licensing fees which by the way are not dictated by Apple, are paid. Apple is a retailer not a governing body. The terms of the sale, TOS or TOA terms of agreement from the Apple store are intended to protect Apple from any unwarranted legal actions. However, since Apple is a private for profit company and not a Governing Institution. For the laws in your area I would contact a Barrister familiar with Copyright and Royalties similar to the RIAA, Ascap and BMI here in the U.S.A.
